ear Friends,

This past year has tested us all. It has tested our day-to-day lives; it has tested our businesses, communities, academic institutions, and the nation as a whole. I am by nature an optimist and that, too, has been tested. Yet, my natural inclination is to find silver linings and to feel gratitude. I believe there is something about working in the field of outdoor education, whether with children or adults, that engenders curiosity, possibility and hope. If it rains on a camping trip it makes the tent that much cozier and the fire that much warmer. If an individual feels afraid on the high ropes course, they can experience genuine support and validation from their colleagues on the ground.

This past year has provided COEC with the chance to discover myriad silver linings and to seek the path of possibility and optimism.

One of the most enjoyable silver linings has been our reinvigorated, cross-organizational collaboration. Prior to March 2020, The Nature Place, Sanborn, and High Trails Outdoor Education Center were all moving along successfully, yet siloed, within each of their own entities. The pandemic created an opportunity for directors and staff to create and host programming together. Those of us who normally find ourselves leading “repeat-after-me songs” during meals had the opportunity to serve meals and lead hikes for first responders. Others who typically

facilitate corporate groups enjoyed chatting with alums and future generations of campers during family camp. We have leaned on each other’s strengths and gained a deeper understanding of and respect for the big picture of COEC.

As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and like many businesses we have found ourselves innovating. Innovation at camp in a normal year looks like creating a fun new evening activity, developing a new Discovery Group curriculum, or bringing in a new client. While things change and shift, it is always within a familiar framework. Not this year.

With our school program and camps completely closed, and The Nature Place operating at a very limited capacity, we had to find new forms of revenue. We didn’t need to abandon our mission, vision or core values, but we had to expand our possibilities. From this work came a partnership with A Place Beyond and the Sanborn Gap Semester. APB offers college students the chance to take their classes online from the (now) High Trails College Campus, allowing them to connect with nature and find community during a time of social distancing and isolation. The Gap Semester gave another group of college students time and space to learn technical outdoor skills, explorer career opportunities and lead a life of discovery. This process of recognizing and actualizing organizational innovation was exciting,

motivating, inspiring and rewarding...a true silver lining.

Though we continue to seek and see the silver linings of this experience, the one that stands out most for me is the reconnection with simplicity. Throughout the pandemic, as many people were unable to leave their homes, travel, or engage in non-stop activities, it felt like the world found simplicity and beauty in slowing down. Throughout the summer we offered camping, hiking, and horseback riding on the property. Alums and their families enjoyed the slower pace that nature offers, the simplicity of having what you need on your back, and the connections and moments you can create with others in the outdoors. As we look ahead to the summer, we know there will be much to overcome. Yet we also know the campers and adults we work with will find profound growth and wonder in the simple moments of connection with the natural world and with each other.

These silver linings have provided community and connection. They have provided innovation and opportunity. Most of all, they have provided focus and clarity, much like our Colorado bluebird skies after the clouds and rain clear.

Sincerely,

Greetings:,

On behalf of my fellow Trustees, I hope this finds you and your family healthy and safe. This note is longer than usual; then again, what is usual in this environment? Fortunately, I can tell you that COEC is doing well and everyone is busy running current programs and preparing for Summer 2021. Isn’t the mere thought of camp a great feeling in this environment?

Our ability to open successfully and operate safely is due to a senior leadership team that has adapted the organization and has worked tirelessly to ensure that we are prepared for almost any scenario. This staff has put in hundreds of hours developing plans, contingencies, systems and protocols that allow us to operate. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude

In the 40+ years that I have been involved at COEC as a camper, staff member, alum, parent and Trustee, 2020 was, without a doubt, the most difficult year we have faced. As the pandemic hit, we made the decision to cancel the spring programs at the High Trails Outdoor Education Center. This was just a sign of things to come. Little did we know, what we thought was our most significant decision was just a false summit.

In late spring the Trustees had to make the most consequential decision in our history when, at the recommendation of the senior leadership team, we cancelled all summer programs at Big Spring and High Trails and the fall HTOEC program. In many ways, that is when the story began to turn and the uniqueness of COEC began to shine.

Almost immediately, over 70% of the families enrolled for summer 2020 simply left money on deposit for enrollment in 2021. In some cases, those families generously donated their deposits to COEC and waited to send a new deposit for 2021. A group of dedicated alums raised over $250,000 in the early summer to help maintain our year-round staff. Senior staff members took voluntary cuts in compensation. These actions sustained COEC and demonstrated what a unique place it holds in all of our hearts.

As the summer progressed, the Trustees and the senior leadership team worked to manage costs and keep the organization moving

forward. We still had calves to be cared for and horses to be fed. Our large physical plant needed to be maintained. Most importantly, we had to plan for organizational next steps in the midst of the pandemic. It would be impossible to detail all of the scenarios that have been prepared for all of our programs. All of this was done with efficiency and care and a dedication to the understanding that children and adults need time in the outdoors while building a community and learning and growing as individuals.

There has been a continued acceleration of the good news as we ended 2020 and entered 2021:

• We launched our first new program in over 30 years: The Sanborn Gap Semester.

- This program filled with in a month of our announce ment and those students are currently enjoying a 65-day experiential learning program designed by our staff.

• We partnered with an exciting new group, A Place Beyond.

- They have 48 college students living at High Trails while attending their respective colleges remotely – not a bad place to have a remote learning experience.

- They get wonderful camp meals, and study breaks can mean a climb of A-bluff or sitting in an aspen grove.

• The staff put together wonderful “socially distanced” family camps last summer utilizing our facilities and peoples desire to be outdoors and in a community.

• Elizabeth Marable, at the request of the Trustees, became our interim executive director.

- It would be impossible to overstate what a fantastic job she has done. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for agreeing to take the position and for the amazing effort she has put into filling the role.

• The Nature Place has remained open and we have clients that have demonstrated the value of the programs we provide by continuing to come and book more visits.

• It is important to give three loud cheers to Rob Jolly for his over 30 years of service to COEC. He guided The Nature Place to great success.

- As of December 31, Rob is enjoying a very deserved retirement but remains a consultant to TNP and Elizabeth.

- Rob’s contributions are amazing. He was Sandy’s partner as they developed TNP into the world class conference and retreat center that it is today.

THANK YOU, ROB!

While we are not able to operate the spring season of our 2021 High Trails Outdoor Education program, we are preparing for Summer 2021 at SWC. Enrollment is incredibly strong and there are waiting lists at many age levels at both HT and BS.

Thanks to prudent financial management over the last two decades COEC has been able to weather the COVID storm. None of our planning ever considered “a lost year” but, the Trustees and the senior leadership team worked together to ensure that the organization remains on stable footing. With the exception of funds from the Payroll Protection Plan, COEC remains debt free. Our ability to emerge from this crisis in a sustainable position results from good management and, importantly, from the generosity of

people like you.

I will close this letter with two key thoughts. First, there may be some necessary accommodations to COVID, but rest assured that the SWC experience and spirit will thrive this summer. Chippy dippy bars will be made in the bakery. 14ers will be summitted. Horseback trips will venture to 39 Mile Mountain. And, friendships will be made that will last a life time. Second, I would not be able to write this letter without the significant support from our alums, parents and friends. Your generosity has been amazing and your concern for the organization expressed in notes, calls and meetings has been overwhelming.

Looking forward to a great Summer 2021,

Thank You Thank You Thank You

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of our alums, camp families, and friends during what has certainly been the most challenging time in the history of the camps. Together you donated more than $900,000 to COEC/Sanborn Camps in 2020. You allowed us to keep paying our outstanding professional staff, and they all helped out by taking salary cuts. You made it possible for us to keep feeding our horses, paying utility and insurance bills, and performing basic maintenance on our facility. You inspired us to innovate, to look for silver linings, and to meet each challenge we faced with confidence and optimism. You gave us hope.

Thank-you to our many camp families who instead of asking us to send back their 2020 deposits, either allowed us to keep them for 2021 or donated them. Thank-you to the many alums who, in response to Chris Shear’s heartfelt letter in May, sent checks for the COVID Bridge Fund. These timely gifts were incredibly important to help us through those first few difficult months.

And thank-you to our alums and camp families who had made generous 5-year pledges to our Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign in 2018 or 2019. Despite the economic turmoil in the country, everyone honored those pledges in 2020, and we even received a few new donations to the Capital Campaign. Some of those funds were directed to our scholarship endowment which continues to grow while currently providing much needed tuition assistance for campers in 2021. Gifts designated for “Greatest

Need” are currently safely invested and provide immense security for our future.

When we sent our traditional annual appeal letter in November, we anticipated that the response would be less than normal because so many of you had already contributed. You surprised us again! More of you donated than ever before and the total amount of gifts surpassed our wildest expectations. These funds are being used to provide scholarships for 2021 and to support some of our urgent program needs as we move into the summer.

One of Sandy’s favorite quotes was this one by Margaret Mead “Never doubt that a small group of committed humans can change the world. It’s the only thing that ever has.”

We know that the mental health of young people has been sadly impacted during this pandemic. They have more anxiety and more depression. They have suffered from loneliness and feelings of isolation. The camp experience of community, fun, and social and emotional growth is more important than ever. You have allowed us to continue this important work and we are so very grateful. You have made a difference.

Sincerely,

SANBORN TOMORROW

2020 was a challenging year financially for COEC. Though we reduced expenses dramatically, expenses exceeded revenue by a factor of four. Through the generosity of our donors, a PPP loan to help support staff salaries, deposits for our 2021 camp season, and cash reserves in our operational accounts, we made it through 2020 without accruing debt.

• The rebuild of the Ponderosa cabin at High Trails was almost complete when COVID-19 began in March 2020.

• In addition, $142,000 has been committed for scholarships in 2021.
