The district can’t buy or accept any new books until it hires someone to make sure they comply with the state’s draconian censorship regulations. So, the dictionaries sit on the shelf.

According to Education Week, College Board collaborated with academic and cultural institutions along with Black communities on the local and national levels to launch the first-ever AP Program in African American Studies.

OCR examined whether non-discriminatory reasons, such as the students’ prior discipline histories, or higher poverty rates (as measured by student participation in free or reduced-price lunch programs), explained the disparities in the district’s discipline of African American students. OCR determined that these reasons did not explain these disparities.

Based on their personal knowledge and professional experience with the district, these witnesses credibly told OCR that they believed the district was discriminating against African American students in discipline, particularly at certain schools and in multiple areas such as suspensions, expulsions, truancy, and law enforcement citations. During the period OCR reviewed, law enforcement citations were issued to students through a program called “Clean Sweep,” which authorized school administrators to issue citations to students for disciplinary infractions that required them to appear in juvenile court. Several witnesses described how Clean Sweep and District expulsion practices that departed from its policies and state law discriminated against African American students. Administrator and employee witnesses provided examples of such discrimination at various schools to OCR based on their personal knowledge and observations of discipline decisions and data during the scope of their District employment. The evidence also included witness statements from administrators and employees who observed what they perceived to be racial bias in the discipline process, and other employees whose statements reflected racial generalizations and negative racial stereotypes about African American students and families.OCR’s conclusion that the district engaged in disparate treatment also relied on substantial circumstantial evidence of racial discrimination that was consistent with and supported the witness statements about the district’s harsher discipline of African American students than white students across multiple areas of discipline and schools. Such circumstantial evidence included statistical evidence that African American students were

Racially Disparate Issuance of Clean Sweep Citations

The director of the nonprofit EveryLibrary warns that the current wave of book bans amounts to “the silencing of stories and the suppressing of information” that will make “the next generation less able to function in society.”
The legislation, Assembly Bill (AB) 179, authored by Assemblymember Phillip Ting (D-San Francisco), paves the way for establishing a policy institute that will focus on improving structures and practices that impact the lives of Black women and girls across the state.

Jessica Isom is a Boston-based psychiatrist and an advocate for equity and justice for BIPOC patients. She has been an outspoken resource and advisor in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs through her company Vision for Equality, which has worked with several major brands and medical institutions. She sees part of the issue as a flaw in the culture of medicine which makes changing it difficult.
Scores of studies show that health outcomes for African Americans have historically been among the lowest, according to various metrics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported African Americans have the highest rate of infant mortality of any ethnic group. The number of Black doctors is also disproportionately low, at just 5 %, according to a 2019 survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Khoury and Grubbs say that issues with Kaiser are a small part of a bigger problem in the medical community and are hoping that their stories can be the jumping-off point for “Kaiseraction.iswhere we are today, but this is everywhere, not just there,” said Khoury. “This is why we need the whole village.”

For this analysis, the incometo-poverty ratio represents how much an individual or resourcesharing unit received after taxes and transfer income in relation to the poverty threshold.
For instance, including the CTC increased the share of individuals in the second-highest income-topoverty ratio category (200% to 399% of the poverty threshold) by 5.8 percentage points to 44.1%.

While not captured in the SPM rate, the CTC also reduced the share of individuals slightly above poverty. The percentage of children in near poverty (100% to 149% of the poverty threshold) declined 6.0 percentage points from 18.1% without the CTC to 12.1% with the CTC.
ARPA greatly expanded both eligibility and the value of the CTC. While the previous analysis looked at the full impact of the CTC, which lifted 2.9 million children out of poverty, Table 2 shows how much of that was due to expansion of the CTC. It shows the expansion prevented 2.1 million of those children from falling into poverty.

Sheriff Suspends Clean SWEEP Program as a Result of DOJ Investigation
NOTICE: Suspension of Clean SWEEP SUMMARY:ProgramThe Sheriff’s Department has suspended the Clean SWEEP program, because of an investigation being conducted by the Department of Justice (DOJ). Clean SWEEP is a disciplinary program designed to address minor offences in the school setting through noncriminal procedures, with a focus to keep kids in school and out of suspension/expulsion procedures. The Sheriff sent a letter to all participating school districts this week, informing them of the suspension. The letter contained the following information: Effective immediately, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is suspending the Clean SWEEP program and asks you to also immediately cease all Clean SWEEP activities at your campus(es). I feel compelled to take this step out of an abundance of caution, and to better focus our ongoing response to DOJ requests and Recently,inquiries. the California Department of Justice (DOJ) informed us that it was investigating
Clean SWEEP considering some concerns expressed to the DOJ about the program. While we have repeatedly asked what those concerns are, the DOJ has unfortunately refused to tell us.
