Last week on the second anniversary of George Floyd's murder, President Joe Biden signed an executive order inspired by police reform legislation introduced in Congress called the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA37), who is running for Mayor of Los Angeles, introduced the legislation that passed in

the House of Representatives but has stalled in the Senate.

“When the Senate failed to act, [Sen. Cory Booker] and I went to the President and asked him to act,” Bass tweeted the day Biden signed the order.

“We worked closely with the White House and came up with an executive order that will help bring transparency and accountability to law enforcement,” she said.

Pres. Biden, V.P. Harris Praise Rep. Bass for Leadership on George Floyd Policing Act The executive order establishes a new database for federal law enforcement officers, such as FBI or DEA agents, who have been fired for misconduct.

While state and local law enforcement agencies are not required to contribute to this database, there will be an avenue for them to participate in this process if they decide to do so.

“It will enhance accountability, improve transparency, and raise policing standards in an effort to help end the horrific incidents of violence that we often witness, like the murder of George Floyd," Sen. Los Angeles-based activist Kelli Todd Griffin, Convener of the California Black Women's Collective, believes that this executive order is “a step in the right direction,” but that there is still more work to be done to reduce violent police encounters.

“The executive order cannot do what Congress can do, but it can still address some of the critical issues,” Griffin said. “There's got to be change in order to progress.”

Biden made a similar assertion during the signing event at the White House, where Bass was present.

SBCUSD Highlights Class Of 2022 Valedictorians Community/ Education News With 23 valedictorians from 7 comprehensive high schools, San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) has a lot to be proud of—two valedictorians are going to Stanford University, one to Princeton University, three are headed to the University of California, Berkeley, and two to California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB).

Our valedictorians have even more to be proud of, as they have shown that with hard work and dedication, you can rise to the top, even when life throws obstacles at you.

Wendy Aguilar has a 4.91 G.P.A. and a passion for politics and leadership, as evidenced by her participation in the Global Leadership Academy club and the Young Legislators club at Arroyo Valley High (AVHS) and her decision to major in Political Science at the University of Redlands. The teacher who had the greatest impact in her life was her high school art teacher, Robyn Holt. Holt’s kindness, positivity, and belief in her students made all the difference.

She plans to become a general physician or cardiothoracic surgeon.

Cardinal City Mayor and valedictorian Kimberlyn Chavez Quiroz is graduating from San Bernardino High School (SBHS) with a 4.785 weighted G.P.A. She is on her way to UC Berkeley to study psychology. She credits Arrowview Middle School science teacher Roice Bethel with teaching

her “the importance of keeping a balance between fun and school.”

Indian Springs High School (ISHS) valedictorian Sarai Conde is graduating with a 4.84 G.P.A. and college acceptance letters from California Baptist University, Creighton University, Xavier University, University of California, Santa Cruz, and UC San Diego. However, she has decided to attend University of Califor nia, R iverside (UCR) to study neuroscience and n e u r o p s y c h o l o g y.

Daniela De La Torre is a member of ASB (Associated Student Body), Key Club, the Class of 2022 Committee, and Peer Leaders, and maintains a 4.66 weighted G.P.A. This MCHS valedictorian plans to major in business administration at UC Berkeley with the goal of becoming a financial manager.

“Lily” Gracia is a musician at heart, so it’s no surprise that she was part of the San G Quintet and Symphonie Juenesse and the teacher who inspired her most was her high school orchestra teacher, John Brannon. When college starts in the fall, Lily will be studying music history and the music industry at either Berklee College of Music or the University of Southern California (USC).

AVHS valedictorian Frankie Grant credits her freshman English teacher Brian Mudd for much of her academic success by challenging her to develop the work ethic that would land her at the top of her class. Frankie would go on to participate in Academic Decathlon, Best Buddies, Students for Change and Calculus Club. Her goal is to attend UCLA and eventually become a clinical psychologist.

Michelle Le is graduating from AVHS with a 4.87 G.P.A. and plans to earn an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology degree from University of California, Irvine. Her ultimate goal is to become a marine biologist. She credits her ninth-grade biology teacher, Karen Swedlove, with sparking her love of biology.

SAN BERNARDINO – May 27, 2022 – Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and with that comes pools opening for water play across San Bernardino County. First 5 San Bernardino wants to remind families to be hyper-vigilant of children around water and make the ABC’s of Water Safety a priority.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional, injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4. It is an accident that doesn’t need to happen.

“Because drowning happens in seconds and is often silent, it’s imperative that parents keep The ABC’s of Water Safety top of mind especially as we enter the summer months,” shared First 5 San Bernardino Executive Director Karen Scott.

The ABC's of Water Safety are (A) Adult Supervision, (B) Barriers and (C) Classes. Adult Supervision means maintaining active supervision while children are around water. - It was a night of food, fun, and fundraising, as San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) celebrated 95 years of excellence at its Great Expectations Gala.

Held April 1st on the SBVC campus, this sold-out event brought in more than $175,000 through sponsorships, seats, a silent auction, an opportunity drawing and additional donations.

us so that they, too, can have opportunities for a better life,” Rodriguez said.

The gala was also a celebration of 95 Distinguished Alumni.

One of them, Dexter Thomas, performed onstage with a jazz band. SBVC Interim President Dr. Scott Thayer praised the college’s alumni during his remarks, saying that “for almost a century, SBVC has helped to build up and drive the many businesses that flourish in our region."

"Throughout that time, we have produced over 850,000 global alumni in every field imaginable, winning so many awards, recognitions and accolades they are difficult to count,” he continued.

The night was “a resounding success,” SBVC Foundation Director Mike Layne said, adding that his team is incredibly grateful

for all of the support from the community and stakeholders.

“The event allowed us to showcase the many positive impacts that San Bernardino Valley College and its students have brought to our local communities for the past 95 years,” said Layne.

Opinion: The Legislature Must Act Water Expert: Make Conservation a Now to Fix Schools Failing Black “Family Project” as Calif. Drought Gets Worse Children Aldon Thomas Stiles | California Black Media

I am a Los Angeles local who was educated in our public schools, Audubon Jr. High and Crenshaw High School. It’s been decades since I walked across the stage and received my diploma as a proud Cougar. One thing about then that remains true today is California’s Black students are falling behind in their academic performance. This poor academic performance is not limited to inequitable access to quality K-12 programs, inexperienced teachers, low expectations, racial bias, trauma and lack of services. Our youth deserve better, they deserve fairness and equity -- and they deserve it now.

There’s a proposed fix that’s making its way through the State Legislature in Sacramento, AB 2774 (Assemblymembers Weber and Holden), Education Equity Now. Before I tell you about the solution, here’s what the proposal will address.

In 2013, California attempted to create equality in school funding by developing the Local Control Funding Formula (LCCF) which was designed to provide more equitable funding, with the goal of adding additional funding to highest need students.

The subgroups identified then and who are currently receiving funding include English Language learners, low-income students, and foster/homeless youth. There is no denying students who are members of these groups deserve the additional financial support to ensure they are receiving the educational opportunities they deserve. However, the LCCF formula fails to include a subgroup of the lowest performing students to receive supplemental funds. For the past two decades that has been Black students.

The achievement gap for Black students is pervasive regardless of income. 2019 statewide testing data shows that Black students are the lowest performing subgroup with 67% not meeting English Language Standards and 79 % not meeting Math Standards. As a result of inadequate support and funding, Black students have the highest suspension rate of any subgroup at 8.8% and the lowest graduation rate at 76.8%.

This year marks 68 years since the Supreme Court ended school segregation with the decision in Brown v. Board of Education. That ruling was the first step in a long road to equality in our country’s educational system.

But we can’t stop there. Now, in California, a state known for its opportunity and innovation, we have the opportunity to continue pushing equality for our youth, our future and pass AB 2774.

This legislation will benefit Black students by creating a new supplemental grant for the lowest performing subgroup of students not receiving LCFF funds. It is estimated AB 2774 would help generate more than $400 million for public schools across the state to provide critically needed academic support for Black students.

When these funds are provided to historically under resourced, underserved communities, they will receive part of the resources needed to help give our schools what the need to achieve and meet a higher standard.

Education is the key to equity, equality, opportunity and advancement. We must provide the support and resources to our young people so that they can succeed.

When the bar is raised in our under-resourced communities, we can raise standards for all Golden State students, and we achieve together.

African American water experts are joining state officials calling on Californians to conserve as much water as possible in preparation for an abnormally dry summer ahead.

California is in year three of a drought that scientists have called the driest in the history of the state.

“Look at your usage. Make it a family project,” said Dale Hunter, respected African American water expert in Sacramento.

Last week, the State Water Resources Control Board voted to ban the watering of “nonfunctional” turf to combat California’s drought as state officials estimate that water supplies may decrease by 20% due to rising heat.

This statewide ban will apply to the commercial, industrial and institutional sectors.

“California is facing a drought crisis and every local water agency and Californian needs to step up on conservation efforts,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “I am hopeful the measures enacted by the State Water Board will lead to a reduction of water use across the state.”

Hunter says conservation is urgent.

“This is the state saying, ‘folks this is serious. We are encouraging all locals to come up with a conservation plan,’” he added.

Following state official calls for water use reduction last year, Californians’ water use increased by about 19% this year, according to the governor’s office.

“Californians made significant changes since the last drought, but we’ve seen an uptick in water use. We have to make every drop count,” Newsom said.

Some experts believe that one of the reasons for the increase in water usage was the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were in a pandemic where most people stayed home so naturally water use went up during that period,” Hunter explained.

The State Water Resources Control Board's vote to restrict water usage includes requirements for local agencies to implement their own conservation measures.

Hunter said because some communities have different water needs than others, they may be affected by the drought differently.

According to him people living in mostly Black neighborhoods should be aware of what their local conservation plans are -- as well as what the ramifications are for not following them.

“Stay informed because water conservation, in order to be effective, is a local issue,” he said.

“Local agencies all have different ways to cut back. You can reduce watering your grass, you can reduce the washing machine and dish washing.”

“What they do in Riverside they may not do in San Jose,” Hunter added.

In San Jose, for example, the Santa Clara Valley Water District will implement water use fines that can go as high as $10,000 for people who go over their water use limit.

“Some may not do that," Hunter said. "Some agencies may keep encouraging people before they go down the more drastic route, which would include fines.”

Hunter believes that individual solutions for water use reduction will become clearer in the coming weeks.

“I believe that we're going to see the local agencies, over the next couple of weeks, really ramp up their promotion and advertising about what individual homeowners can do.”

Hunter compared the current drought to the dry conditions the state has been experiencing over the last two years.

“The drought the last couple of years wasn't even, meaning some parts of our state were dryer than others. I think this round it's dry up and down the state,” Hunter said.

Eight Black Media Outlets Among 46 News Orgs Win Over $5 Million in Grants California Black Media Staff Eight Black-owned media organizations serving African American audiences across California are among 46 ethnic media news outlets awarded over $5 million in grants by the state.

The grant program is a collaboration between the California State Library and the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs. It was created to support media outlets serving communities where hate crimes are likely to happen.

The funding will also help raise awareness about a related program: the Stop the Hate campaign that the California Department of Social Services has been spearheading with an initial investment of $20 million over the last year. The

campaign funds communitybased organizations working to reduce hate crimes and promote intercultural and interracial cooperation and understanding.

“Crimes targeting victims because of their race or ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender or a disability have no place in the state of California,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom.

T he si x Bla ck- ow ned media organizations targeting predominantly Black audiences that received grants are: California Black Media ($400,000); The Black Voice News in Riverside County ($100,000); L.A. Focus ($96,000) in Los Angeles County; Pace News in Los Angeles County ($95,150); The Precinct Reporter in Los Angeles, San Bernardino

and Orange counties ($88,000); The San Francisco Bay View ($85,000); The Sac Cultural Hub in Sacramento County ($80,000); and Indian Voices in San Diego County ($59,741).

According to the California State Library the grants will allow ethnic media outlets to hire or contract with “specialized reporters, fellowships, and internships at ethnic media outlets, news briefings and roundtables, digital and social media content, community gatherings and partnerships with grassroots organizations and Community B a s e d O r g a n i z a t i o n s .”

“We live in the state with the most racial, ethnic and cultural diversity in the United States. Yet, the deep tensions and misconceptions among us

can trigger violence and rip our communities apart,” said Regina Brown Wilson, Executive Director of California Black Media (CBM).

“This funding is necessary because it equips media organizations with resources we need to educate, inform and connect the communities we serve, encouraging honest conversations, which are believe are opportunities to teach each other and learn from each other,” Wilson continued.

The grant program is a part of the Asian and Pacific Islander Equity Budget, a three-year investment of $166.5 million allocated to address the sharp increase in hate incidents.

Joe Bowers, a Los Angeles County-based researcher, will be working on identifying multicultural communities vulnerable to hate crimes that Black-owned newspapers in the state serve. He says he looks forward to providing data that will be key to helping CBM’s partner publications target their audiences with information

that elevates and promotes interracial and cross-cultural relationships in their communities.

“There have been a number of demographic shifts in the state. It is critical for media to understand who their audiences are, where those people live, who they live next to, and what the potential challenges and opportunities may be,” Bowers continued.

Several supporters and news publications said they are pleased with the intention of the program and support the scaling up of it over the next few years.

Most publications are expected to kick off their programs over the next month.

Gun Safety & Public Safety: We Should Not Tolerate Continued Inaction

Ben Jealous The mass killings at the elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, 10 days after the white supremacist killings in Buffalo, New York, are further evidence of how deeply our society is broken, and how urgently we need to figure out how to begin fixing it.

The slaughter of so many young children and two of their teachers is shocking at a human level. It is absolutely gutting to me as a parent of school-aged

children. Millions of us send our kids off to school every day, trying to set aside the knowledge gnawing at our insides that our school and our kids could be next.

It should be unimaginable, and in most countries it is.

But it is not unimaginable in our country. It is so not unimaginable that we subject our young children to the trauma of live shooter drills. We make teachers responsible for preparing students to deal with what too many of our policymakers have decided is not worth trying to prevent.

On the day of the signing, Booker took to Twitter to share a message of remembrance for George Floyd.

“He was a son, a father, a brother,” Booker said. “We all bear responsibility for a system that has allowed what happened to George Floyd to happen with such frequency. Changes are coming at the local, state, and national level. But more change is needed.”

Renowned for presenting worldclass music, the Marin County Fair will have a stellar lineup of bands every night June 30 through July 4, all free with the price of general admission.

The 2022 fair will focus on outdoor entertainment including the headline concerts, performers roaming the grounds such as jugglers, unicyclists, and stilt walkers, and interactive art experiences for fans of all ages.

Returning fair favorites will include traditional carnival rides, the Global Marketplace, the Barnyard, food and drinks, and fireworks every night over the Civic Center’s Lagoon Park.

The always-popular competitive exhibits program will take place online as it did in 2021.

In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. In 1977, the album A Place in the Sun was the turning point in the band’s career as they finally entered the mainstream music scene. With hit single “Whatcha Gonna Do?” and the title track “A Place in the Sun,” the album peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard charts. Fighting The Good Fight CalHFA and Home Free-USA Working Together to Improve Homeownership...

By Robert Daniels According to most people, the housing and mortgage industry works on three major assumptions. First, houses appreciate in value, which means housing prices almost always rise. Second, demand outpaces supply, which also drives prices up, as more people are looking than homes are available. This phenomenon creates the bidding wars that drive many people to pay more money than they want to for their dream house. Third, location often dictates prices. For instance, you want to live near the beach? Be prepared to pay a premium for living within two miles of a coastline. You want to live in the city so you don’t have to fight traffic on the freeways?

That is going to push the price for that loft or condo to hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars extra every month over a same sized place in the suburbs.

With those assumptions firmly in place, many Americans set out in the current market knowing that it will be an uphill battle. Homeownership is the most consistent way to build generational wealth for the majority of people in this country.

But with inflation rising above 8%, the American dream of buying a house and owning your own strip of land is starting to feel more like a nightmare. A nightmare that is likely to continue to perpetuate a wealth gap that has widened every generation since the Civil War. There are, however, good people in the fight to get more families into homes.

Enter the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) and the HomeFree-USA network of

organizations. Through they are two very separate entities — one a self-supporting state agency and the other a Black-founded nonprofit — they are fighting for California families together.

Simone Griffin, Vice President of Affiliate Relations, for HomeFree-USA explains their partnership with CalHFA. “We’ve partnered with CalHFA to provide all manner of housing counseling assistance to California residents through local agencies across the state. These nonprofits provide pre-purchase, rental, homeless and foreclosure prevention counseling services, among others. The goal is to keep Californians housed in safe, affordable dwellings.”

Tiena Johnson Hall, Executive Director of the CalHFA concurs, “Our state’s amazing network of housing counselors provide a vital service to Californians that are struggling with housing-related issues. CalHFA’s partnership with housing counselors is also extremely helpful as we work to serve California’s low to moderate income homebuyers and provide assistance to help residents get caught up on missed housing payments.”

Many of the counselors that Hall speaks of come from the HomeFree-USA network of nonprofit affiliates. That network is made up of 53 collaborative organizations nationwide, including 11 in the state of California. The HomeFree-USA network combines resources between the organizations to stem rising financial concerns and push back against the struggles continued on page 7

After cutting his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area, San Francisco songwriter Matt Jaffe was discovered by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads. Together, they produced Matt’s first album when he was 16, cementing his dedication to music. Matt has written more songs than he can remember the words to, crisscrossed the country opening for Mavis Staples and Wilco, and co-written with Tom Higgenson of the Plain White T’s. Inspired by the great lineage of rock n’ roll, he marries literary lyrics with the undeniable urge to dance. Having suffered from seizures since 2015, Matt also uses his music to unite local and national epilepsy communities. Matt is currently rolling out his fourth and fifth albums, Undertoad and Kintsugi.

Friday, July 1, 7:30 p.m.: Sheila

She has since established herself as one of the most talented percussionist/ drummers and performers in the world. She became a top session and touring musician before the age of 20, performing and/ or recording with George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Con Funk Shun, Marvin Gaye (on his final world tour), Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Nicks among others.

Sheila E.’s producing, arranging, and performance talents have been showcased throughout the music and film industry. In 2014, Sheila released her literary biography titled The Beat of My Own Drum, and her solo album, ICON. Following Prince’s death, she released the single “Girl Meets Boy” in memory of the late, great, Prince. In 2018, Sheila E. released, ICONIC: Message for America, an album that displays her efforts in awareness to social issues and humanitarianism. Her current single, “No Line” with the legendary Snoop Dogg, is Sheila’s continued contribution to the music industry.

Cajon valedictorian Luis Luna is planning to dual enroll in New York’s Columbia University and France’s SciencesPo to study political science and eventually become a diplomat. With a 4.0 unweighted G.P.A. and extracurricular activities like Speech & Debate and Model United Nations and being the debate coach at Rodriguez Prep Academy, Luis is well on his way to accomplishing his dream.

Cajon valedictorian Eric Martinez is on his way to Stanford University to major in Anthropology and Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity.

The founder and president of the DREAMers Club credits his high school International Baccalaureate teacher John Anderson for teaching him “how to learn, how to question my learning, how to take control of my learning, and what it truly means to be human.”

With extracurricular activities like water polo, National Honor Society ( NHS)/Califor nia Scholarship Federation (CSF), and Jr. Public Relations and Communications Specialist for Tomorrow’s Talent, it’s no surprise that Cajon valedictorian Roxana Martinez will be attending Princeton. Her goal is to become an immigration lawyer.

Not only does Spencer “White Lightning” Nelson excel in academics, he is also part of the SBCUSD Teen Music Workshop and the cross country and track and field teams. Spencer credits Richardson PREP HI Middle School music teacher Peter

Llamas with helping him blossom into the type of hard-working student who becomes a Cajon valedictorian. Spencer’s next stop is UC Berkeley, where he will major in biology or business.

MCHS valedictorian, School Site Council member, and peer leader Julie Nguyen said her sophomore math teacher, Steven Wright, “instilled in me an appreciation and fascination of (math), which ultimately led me to deciding to pursue a career in computer science.”

Julie was accepted into UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara, but decided to attend UC San Diego.

She maintained a 4.69 G.P.A. while also playing on the basketball, tennis, and track and field teams, and playing in the band. This Keith Hubbs Award winner was accepted to UCLA, UCR, the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, and CSUSB. She has chosen to stay local and study geology at CSUSB. SBHS valedictorian Fernando Ramirez-Barragan was accepted to UCLA, CSUSB, Cal Poly Pomona, and UC Irvine, but he has decided to attend UCLA to become a civil engineer. He maintained an unweighted 4.0 G.P.A. while also participating in track and field, cross country, National Honor Societ y, and Spanish Honor Society.

Cajon valedictorian Vivianna “Vivi” Santos wants to open her own dermatology practice in the future, and she has a plan to get there. Her time with Best Buddies, Caremates, and the Latino Student Union have prepared her to lead her own company and care for patients.

Soon, she’ll be majoring in prebiology, with a minor in business, at UC Santa Barbara. Once she earns her bachelor’s degree, Vivi will be heading to medical school to complete her education.

Sahian Solares will go from a wolverine to a coyote when she graduates as a valedictorian from MCHS with a 4.80 weighted G.P.A. and then joins the CSUSB campus to major in kinesiology.

Her final goal is to become a doctor of physical therapy.

Sahian said Eva Tillman, her fifth-grade teacher from Jones Elementary School, had the greatest impact on her education.

With extracurricular activities like tennis, Academic Decathlon, Club de Español, Best Buddies, AP Spanish Club, and Calculus Club, it’s no surprise that AVHS valedictorian Alexa Tapia-Plazola was accepted into colleges including the University of Redlands, UC Berkeley, USC, UCLA, and Claremont McKenna College. She plans to major in linguistics at Pomona College.

With her involvement in Best Buddies, National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, and the girls’ basketball team, it’s impressive that Cajon valedictorian Mya Verrett maintained a 4.82 weighted G.P.A. In a few months, Mya will be at UC San Diego working toward a degree in bioengineering.

Emily Viramontes maintained a 4.0 unweighted G.P.A. while also participating in the National Honor Society, Key Club, the MedicaZone, track and field and cross country, and the BRAINterns Summer webinar.

Emily said, “My fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. (Julie) Ohrt, was the first teacher to truly encourage me to push myself to new limits, and expectations I wouldn’t have thought of reaching.”

Now she is reaching for new heights as she works towards a career as a neurosurgeon.

In order to qualify for the honor of valedictorian or salutatorian, a student must be among the top 10 to 20 students with the highest grade value based on the specific courses that every student at an SBCUSD high school campus has access to for seven semesters of high school. Additionally, the student must complete all SBCUSD graduation requirements and complete the eighth and final semester at the school from which they have been selected as valedictorian or salutatorian.

Unweighted G.P.A.s are based on the standard grade-point system of four points for every A grade, three points for every B, and two points for every C grade.

Weighted G.P.A.s are determined by adding a point to grades earned for Honors-level, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. For example, an A grade earned in a Chemistry AP class would be worth five points instead of four.

Headline Concerts Announced for 2022 Marin County Fair – So Happy Together!...continued of Champlin The Sons of Champlin started in Marin County in 1965 by Bill Champlin, Tim Cain, Terry Haggerty, and Geoff Palmer and has been one of Marin’s most beloved homegrown bands for over 50 years. He played for 28 years with the band Chicago and managed to fit in a handful of Sons’ gigs during that time. The current lineup is Bill Champlin on keys and guitar and lead vocals; Geoff Palmer on keys and vibes; Alan Hertz on drums; Dick Mithun on bass; Tal Morris on guitar; Tim Cain on sax; Jeff Lewis on trumpet; Doug Rowan on sax; and Tamara Champlin on lead and background vocals.

Sunday, July 3, 7:30 p.m.: Digable Planets Digable Planets burst onto the music scene in 1993 with their Grammy-winning single, “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat).” Made up of Ishmael Butler (Butterfly), Craig (C Know/ Doodlebug) Irving, and Mary Ann (Ladybug Mecca) Vieira, the trio carved out a unique style of jazz-informed hip hop.

In 2017, they released Digable Planets Live, a live album that showcases many gems from the group’s catalog as well as the trio’s skill at rocking the crowd with a live band.. Nearly 20 years after their debut, their music still shines,

and the group continues to bring their celebrated stage show to excited crowds around the world.

Monday, July 4, 7:30 p.m.: George Porter Jr. and Dumpstaphunk perform The Meters Dumpstaphunk stands out among New Orleans’ best, cementing themselves as one of the funkiest bands to ever arise from the Crescent City. Born on the Jazz & Heritage Festival stage, and descended from Neville and Meters family bloodlines, these soldiers of funk ignite a deep, gritty groove that dares listeners not to move. Today, the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.

COMMENTARY: Media Fasts are a Necessity for Black Mental Health

Media fasts give African Americans a break from the stress of being Black in America and the constant mediation of Black trauma. Many are still traumatized by the targeted mass shooting of African American shoppers at Tops grocery store in Buffalo, NY that left 10 people dead and three injured. Eleven of the 13 victims were African American. The alleged suspect Payton Gendron, an 18-year-old self-described White Supremacist, was taken into custody without incident, after driving 3.5 hours to “take out all Blacks.” The man obsessed with “Replacement Theory” which has been debunked and cited as a conspiracy theory based on paranoia and fear and not fact, planned for five months how to kill blacks, sharing this information online. He live streamed the killings on Twitch, which authorities have called

a hate crime. Gendron pled not guilty at his arraignment.

Gendron’s violent act brought back memories of other antiblack mass shootings like the 2015 white supremacist murders of nine church members at Emanuel African Episcopal Church affectionately referred to as Mother Emanuel in Charleston, South Carolina. Coupled with the continued police shootings of unarmed Black people, many of whom are in the midst of a mental health crisis, violent attacks on African Americans by non-Blacks captured and circulated on mobile phones, the televised failure of the justice system to convict or punish those who commit crimes against unarmed African Americans, and the school shootings like continued in next 2 columns

Honoring Sacred Souls: The Shooting in Buffalo and the Image and Likeness of God Velda Love Aaron Salter, 55, was a retired Buffalo police officer and the security guard at Tops Supermarket. Made in the image and likeness of God. Ruth Whitfield, 86, was a wife and mother. Her son was a former Buffalo fire commissioner. Her husband resides in a nursing home.

Ruth left the nursing home after a visit with him and went to the Tops Supermarket. Made in the image and likeness of God. Pearly Young was a 77-yearold mother, grandmother, and missionary who ran a local neighborhood food pantry for 25 years. Made in the image and likeness of God. Katherine Massey, according to her sister, “was a beautiful soul.”

Katherine was 77 and a writer for the Buffalo News. Made in the image and likeness of God. Haywood Patterson, 67, served a local congregation as a deacon.

Haywood welcomed those who needed transportation to the grocery store. Made in the image and likeness of God. Celestine Chaney was a grandmother of six and had one great grandchild. Celestine was 65 and a cancer survivor. Made in the image and likeness of God. Roberta A. Drury, 32, was described by her friends as caring, happy, and full of life. She would often shop for groceries for her adoptive brother who was recovering from leukemia and lived just down the street from the store. Made in the image and likeness of God. Margus D. Morrison was 52.

His companion describes Margus as someone who loved his kids and his job as a bus aid for First Student. Made in the image and likeness of God. A nd re Ma n K neil was originally from Auburn, NY. He

was murdered on his son’s third birthday. Andre was 53. Made in the image and likeness of God. Geraldine Talley was engaged to be married and anticipating the birth of a grandchild. Geraldine was 62 and one of nine siblings.

Made in the image and likeness of God. Ten beautiful souls were violently murdered by an 18-yearold white supremacist Saturday, May 14, 2022. Hearing the news and learning that the victims were of African descent was heartbreaking—again. Seeing their names, photos, and reading brief descriptions of their lives gave rise to both emotional connection and feelings of profound grief.

Another intentional act of violence was enacted on innocent, valuable, and beloved people created in the image and likeness of God. These were mothers, grandmothers, aunts, siblings, brothers, fathers, uncles, sons, daughters, and members of a larger community beyond Buffalo, NY. Stolen by racist hate.

In these murders, we cannot help but hear echoes. Historical memories of terror lynching, beatings, and murders in Birmingham, AL, Wilmington, NC, and Tulsa, OK. Saying the names of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.

Remembering another domestic terrorist act that took place on June 17, 2015, when Dylann Roof, a white supremacist, murdered nine members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. All acts of violence enacted on beloved people created in the image and likeness of God. Horrific acts of violence in African-American communities are too numerous to count. Honoring Sacred Souls: The Shooting in Buffalo and the Image and Likeness of God...continued moment, many African-American communities are feeling unsafe, anxious, and fearful. Going to buy groceries is a ritual and a necessity. The grocery store is often a place where you see neighbors, exchange hugs, and share stories of daily life and family events. It should not be a place to take your last breath.

Saying “Stop the Hate” will not stop white supremacists from purchasing guns, army gear, and artillery-style weapons. Not only will they continue to believe they are being replaced, but they will also target schools, playgrounds, family gatherings, malls, and venues where African Americans normally feel safe and secure from outsiders disrupting peaceful gatherings and community celebrations.

White Americans cannot respond with shock and awe at the killing of African Americans.

White Americans can no longer ignore the face of domestic terrorists and white supremacists because the reality is the shooters belong to white America.

Christians claiming to love all people can no longer believe their skin color is superior to Black and Brown people; it is not! And Christians with good intentions can no longer quote Habakkuk 1:2 and ask, “How long, O Lord, how long?” waiting on God to address acts of violence enacted on beloved people created in the image and likeness of God. Enough is enough. Now is the time.

Now is the time to protect and honor Black Lives! See Black Lives! Affirm, protect, and stand with African-American communities before the next white supremacist attack.

Now is the time to prioritize legislation advocating for bans on assault weapons and implement stricter gun laws across all ages.

Now is the time to organize and engage in voting rights advocacy in federal, state, and local municipalities.

Now is the time for white Christians to dismantle racism and eradicate the white savior mentality.

Now is the time to learn, understand, and teach others about systemic racism.

Now is the time to provide culturally responsive approaches to education.

Now is the time to decolonize Christianity.

Now is the time center lectionaries written by Black women Bible scholars and theologians.

Now is the time to dismantle systems of hierarchy, beliefs in superiority, and ideologies of dominance.

Now is the time to embrace, celebrate, and learn about the historical and contemporary value of God’s beloved people of African descent.

No more excuses. No more waiting. No more hiding. No more performing. No more empty prayers. No more ignorance. No more silence. The beautiful souls of these beloved people made in the image and likeness of God demand it.

Griffin explains, “This really is a joint effort. It’s not just one organization affecting change and that’s the reason we are coming together and have created this network of non-profit organizations — 53 agencies nationwide, who are doing similar work to close the racial wealth gap.”

Linda Jackson, Executive Director of the one of those agencies, the Inland Empire Resource Center, spoke of the benefits of being part of the HomeFree-USA network.

“HomeFree-USA allows our organization to maintain its own unique identity, therefore allowing us to be agile enough to meet the unique and changing needs of our local market. HomeFree-USA also provides a platform of support and training and most importantly serves as a facilitator in bridging national policy solutions to our local communities. This relationship gives us greater access to information, resources, partners and programs which may otherwise be out of our reach.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once famously said, “There is power in numbers and there is power in unity.” That is the idea. Individually, they are 53 smaller agencies with 53 voices that may struggle to make change, but together they are 53 agencies with one huge voice and the power to create change.

So, armed with this multitude of entities and the breadth of the ideas, experiences and knowledge that come with it, the HomeFree-USA network sets out to help people reach their goal of becoming a homeowner.

B u t t h e jo u r n e y t o homeownership can be a long, arduous road filled with confusing and often aggravating processes, especially if you are a first generation buyer or have special circumstances that need to be taken into consideration.

Circumstances that could include not having a W-2 job because you work in the gig economy, or being part of a military family that may not be able to work and live in one area for a long period of time. What do you do if you don’t technically have “a job” or an employer because you are an Uber or Lyft driver?

Or maybe you write blogs for a living, or earn a livable wage from a social media platform? There are currently 59 million people working in the “gig economy.”

Another 1.5 million are service members in the armed forces. That means more than 60 million or 1 out of every 6 people in the US falls into one of these two categories.

Griffin says the HomeFreeUSA network attacks these issues in various ways. “We’re doing (several) things. Number one, assessing exactly where they are and seeing how we can craft a financial portfolio for them that

a lender would feel comfortable with. Number two, speaking to the lending industry about the fact that (they) are about to miss out on a whole market of entrepreneurs because (they) are used to seeing W-2 employees.

And three, finding the products that have already said ‘I hear you gig economy, entrepreneurs.’ We can take the products that exist and educate our buyers on small things that they can do to be in alignment with what the mortgage industry is looking for, while also trying to bring the mortgage industry along. Then that’s the way to create a win win win.”

But in 2022 with the struggles of a COVID reality, supply chain issues and rising inflation, it is not only about buying homes but also staying housed as the costs for goods and services skyrocket around us. And there again is Cal HFA and the HomeFreeUSA network to the rescue.

There are several programs that are helping those who are struggling with their mortgages and even rent. One of those programs is the National Mortgage Settlement (NMS) program.

CalHFA has allocated $300 million to the program for counseling and mortgage and rental assistance.

Lee is not alone in this assessment.

Jackson of the Inland Empire Resource Center agrees, “The California Mortgage Relief Program is the program we are most proud to participate in. This program allowed us to provide meaningful financial relief solution options. This program specifically addressed the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on communities of color.

Many in our community worked in impacted service industries and either lost their jobs or had their income substantially reduced, and many experienced illness related to COVID-19. The Mortgage Relief Program helped to bring encouragement and support in bleak times, while allowing clients to gain a foothold in negotiating their new financial situation.”

Amy Holter of the Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa chimed in with this, “We are exceptionally proud of our homelessness prevention and housing stability programming aimed at supporting individuals and families who are precariously housed. In Sonoma County alone, there are upwards of 21,000 people who are precariously housed and at risk of homelessness. Our bilingual and bicultural case managers serve anyone seeking resources to improve their lives or address a current financial shock, with a special focus on the Latinx community, which has been disproportionately

impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in northern California.”

There are extra forces making the uphill climb even more mountainous, and that is the falling amount of disposable income for the majority of Americans.

Less disposable money leads to fewer donations to nonprofit organizations and a smaller tax base. Then smaller tax bases lead to fewer grants available to the public. When you put those obstacles together with increasing numbers of families in need, it is a lot of struggle to overcome.

Nora Penaflor, Director of Housing and Compliance for the National Asian American Coalition (NAAC) explains, “One of the biggest problems created by the rising inflation and coronavirus for nonprofits is a drop in grants from major banks.

Despite the lesser grants from the banks, NAAC increased demand for housing counseling services.

The increasing number of people struggling with depression, due to loss of job, causing nonpayment of mortgages increases the demand for housing counseling services.”

Pedro Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition (CVHC) looks at the problems from a builder’s perspective. “Although CVHC’s construction team is very proactive in reviewing pricing, contracts, processes, and other potential cost saving measures rising inflation is greatly impacting the cost of materials and services on our housing projects, making it even more challenging to keep housing costs affordable for low and very-lowincome families and individuals.

We anticipate an even greater need for additional First Time Homebuyer subsidy and other grant funding in 2022 and 2023.”

However, don’t believe all is lost, there is still plenty of money

out there. It is just a smaller pot and more people standing around it, but there are still a variety of helpful sources out there.

So how does HomeFree-USA deal with this swirl of differing perspectives and ideas to create protocols and policies that will help bring it all together. One way is to get the leaders of the mortgage industry to understand that the different ethnic groups are not monolithic. All Black people are not the same, nor are all Asians, or Latinos.

Griffin says, “We’re working with the mortgage industry to let them know that approaching diverse communities with an everyone in one box concept is not working. If it was, we would not have the (homeownership) gaps we continue to have. The industry cannot work with and speak to everyone the same way. And it’s not just marketing. It’s about products, services and other financial tools.”

The network also teaches communities of color how to use credit and become mortgage ready.

“What can we do to understand the nuances of where we are as minority Americans? How can we bridge the gap, so that Black, Latino and Asian Americans are very clear on what they need to do with what they already have, in order to meet the requirements of the mortgage industry to get a loan? We do this while also speaking to the mortgage industry about what they can do to amend their requirements so that they can bring in more Black and Asian families.”

The passion of Griffin, is palpable and inspiring. In the midst of this latest housing crisis, there is one thing that you can count on - the HomeFreeUSA network, their affiliates, and CalHFA will be there, fighting for marginalized people.

San Bernardino County Democrats Comment On 1500 Re-Issued Primary Election Ballots County/ Political News SAN BERNARDINO -MAY 31, 2022 -- Following reports that the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters had re-issued more than 1500 Primary Election ballots after realizing the original ballots had incorrect information due to a clerical error, the San Bernardino County Democratic Party releases the following comment: “The San Bernardino County Democratic Party firmly believes that every citizen deserves to vote and to have their vote counted," said Kristin Washington, SBCDP Chair. "We were disappointed to learn through the press that districts with such high-profile races had ballot distribution errors.

While we don't expect further problems, we encourage the ROV to provide more transparency to the public if there are. In this

era of misinformation around voting, it's important to have clear, reliable and timely information from our Registrar of Voters.”

The SBCDP is comprised of a mix of elected officials and rankand-file Democrats from around the County. The organization represents the 469,725 registered Democrats in the County.

Gun Safety & Public Safety: We Should Not Tolerate Continued Inaction...continued from page 3 of a bill to require background checks for all gun purchases.

That is about the least we could do to try to limit gun violence. It is supported by huge majorities of Americans, including most gun owners. We see similarly misplaced priorities at the state level. According to news reports, the killings in Uvalde were the fifth major mass shooting in the state during Gov. Greg Abbott’s tenure. After previous mass killings, Texas Republicans have weakened gun regulations. In 2015, Abbott urged Texans to buy more guns, tweeting that he was “embarrassed” that the state was falling behind California in gun purchases. Just last year, Abbott signed legislation to loosen gun

restrictions, making it possible for Texans to carry handguns without any license or training.

This is a virtual invitation to increased gun violence.

These recent shootings come at a time when violence is increasingly being normalized and justified by irresponsible leaders.

This column was written one day after the murders in Uvalde, on the two-year anniversary of the police killing of George Floyd, a reminder that Black Americans are all too familiar with the threat that “routine” interactions with police can turn deadly.

Far right-wing activists also insist that the Second Amendment allows private ownership of even the most powerful military weapons, so that they can be turned against a “tyrannical” government.

We are also just days away from congressional hearings on the violent Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. We will hear about extremists in the so-called Stop the Steal movement who threatened civil war if Trump did not stay in power. In spite of Republican efforts to sabotage the investigation, we will learn more about the crimes that led to that day’s deadly violence. And the violent rhetoric goes on: Trump himself recently used his own social media platform to amplify a self-identified MAGA activist’s prediction of – or call for – civil

war. That is utterly irresponsible.

Scholars have identified the kind of polarization taking place in our country, and the kind of diminished commitment to democracy we have seen among Trump Republicans, as predictors of a country’s vulnerability to civil war.

For families who lost loved ones in Buffalo and Uvalde, and for the many communities that have been scarred by mass murder, it may feel like that war has already arrived. That suffering would be multiplied beyond measure if the extremists calling for civil war in our country get their wish.

We should not tolerate the slightest encouragement for that kind of catastrophe from political leaders, including the former commander in chief. And we should not tolerate continued inaction on the violence that stalks our streets and schools.

One only has to think of the viral video of the former football player assailed and assaulted by a United Airlines baggage handler. The football player defended himself and was arrested, which is often the case when we defend ourselves.

Thus, it is often necessary to take a “break” from the media and to engage in what media scholars call a “Media Fast.” A media fast is when you thoughtfully and intentionally disengage from forms of media for a fixed amount of time in order to give your psyche a break from the onslaught

of often violent, stressful images, and stories found on traditional and digital media platforms.

According to media scholar Dr. Racquel Gates, media fasts serve a purpose because of the volume of images African Americans are exposed to in a given day. “It’s not just the violent anti-black content of the media; it’s the omnipresence of it on every platform, coupled with a society where every interaction is increasingly happening in mediated spaces,” says the Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies at Columbia University. “You watch the news and have to hear about police continued in next 2 columns

COMMENTARY: Media Fasts are a Necessity for Black Mental Health...continued brutality. You go online to look at social media and an associate shares a disturbing video. You pull up a funny clip from YouTube but the ads traffic in subtle or notso-subtle problematic messages.

Sometimes the only way to avoid the constant onslaught is just to remove yourself altogether,” says the author of Double Negative: The Black Image and Popular Culture.

Media fasts give African Americans a break from the stress of being Black in America and the constant mediation of Black trauma.

According to a 2021 study entitled, “Highly Public AntiBlack Violence is Associated with Poor Mental Health Days for Black Americans” (David S. Curtis, Tessa Washburn, Hedwig Lee, and David H. Chae), Blacks reported poorer mental health in weeks when two incidents of anti-Black violence occurred when national interest was higher. This study identified 49 incidents of racial violence in the U.S. occurring between 2013 and 2017 and received widely varying levels of search interest (Google Trends and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System [BRFSS]). The reality is that exposure to anti-Black violence has real consequences for Black Mental Health, so it is imperative that Af r ican A mer icans consider taking a break from traditional and online media.

What can African Americans do during a media fast? African Americans can take walks, do yoga, meditate, read books on uplifting or inspirational topics, play board games, knit, and listen to music that makes you feel good. Form a group of non-toxic individuals and have coffee or tea

and conversation about fun topics.

Don’t feel compelled to give up everything all at once and for long periods of time, which can also cause stress. Start out slow and choose one media platform to give up for a few days and see how you feel. Then continue or add another or do what feels best for you.

Once you break your media fast, don’t jump back in and pick up the same media habits.

Maybe you learned to live without a social media platform during your fast that previously caused you great stress? Say goodbye to that platform permanently.

Instead of watching news shows that are opinion heavy, focus on traditional news programs that offer information with no editorializing. If watching the news causes you to lose sleep at night, then try reading it instead. If you read online news, frequent sites that offer “trigger warnings” to help you decide whether or not to watch that video or listen to that audio file.

Whatever you do, make sure you take an occasional time-out from media in order to support your mental health because being Black in America is more than a notion.
