Somehow, white nationalists and Republicans missed, or ignored, the message that Taylor Swift has been promoting for the past 10 years — it's the opposite of their propaganda. Yet, she's even been referred to by white nationalists as their Aryan queen. This week Swift tweeted her support for Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee, clearing the air and sending the alt-right into shock, anger, and condemnation mode. President Trump said Monday that he likes Swift's music "about 25 percent less now, OK?" National Republican Senate

Committee's statement said "multimillionaire pop star Taylor Swift came down from her ivory tower to tell hardworking Tennesseans to vote for Phil Bredesen." Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative group, said, "I don't want to accuse her of this, but I don't think she's the only one who wrote that post on Instagram," Kirk said. "She probably got some very bad information." The white nationalist web community, 4chan, that called her their Aryan queen, contained user remarks that also questioned the authenticity of Swift's tweet, claimed

she just didn't want to be labeled a white nationalist, and blamed liberals for turning her into their "brain dead zombies." In the last decade, Swift has alluded to her political philosophies, but has never announce her political affiliation, until now. Rolling Stone reports Swift commenting on the country "so happy" about the election of Barack Obama in 2008. In 2013, when a teen put Adolph Hitler quotes over Swift images on Pinterest, her lawyer went after Pinterest citing the images as being "harmful, abusive, ethnically offensive, humiliating to other

people, libelous, and otherwise objectionable." In 2016, she publicly supported gun control, in 2017, she was a "silence breaker" for fighting sexual harassment on TIME's Person of the Year cover. In her Instagram post this week, she criticized the Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn for her objection to equal pay, the Violence Against Women Act, and equal business services and rights to marry for gay couples. She stated in part, "I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent." Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee tweeted, "So @taylorswift13 has every right to be political but it won't impact election unless we allow 13-yearold girls to vote. Still with #MarshaBlackburn." And, conservative personality Candace Owens wrote that Swift was using "Black people and minorities as pawns to brainwash people into doing their bidding." Many reactions were fired up on both sides of the aisle, and some had humor, but others called attention to the power of her decision: "She has over 100 million followers on Instagram and many of them are, I'd guess, first-time voters," said Lynnette Hull, president of the Nevada Young Democrats and a student at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Nashville political analyst Kent Syler said of Swift's massive following on Instagram, "Compare that to Donald Trump who has 55 million Twitter followers." Several celebrities "liked" her tweet, including Chrissy Teigen and Katy Perry, and Alyssa Milano, a leading #MeToo voice, thanked Swift for speaking out.

Survey Shows Black Voters Support Newsom, But Not All Democratic Policies By Manny Otiko | California Black Media

African Americans usually vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic Party, but that doesn't mean they are always in line with Democratic state issues. Findings from a recent poll of 1,200 African American voters conducted by Evitarus, a public opinion research firm released new data that shares insight into black voters in California. The California African American Policy Priorities Survey (CAPPS) poll was commissioned by the African American Voter Registration, Education and Participation (AAVREP) Project. The group's mission is to increase Af-

rican American and urban voter registration, education, and civic participation. The survey questioned people via cell phone, landline, and the Internet. However, 82 percent of the responders completed their answers online. According to the survey, 65 percent of African Americans are in favor of Proposition 10, a measure that supports affordable housing. However, almost a third of black voters were in favor of repealing the gas tax. This law was passed by Gov. Jerry Brown and opposed by Republicans. Republicans also support Proposition 6, which would repeal the gas tax. In the gubernatorial race, African Americans favored Democrat Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom has made affordable housing one of the central issues of his campaign. "We're experiencing a housing

affordability crisis, driven by a simple economic argument," said Newsom, according to his campaign website. "California is leading the national recovery, but it's producing far more jobs than homes. Providing adequate housing is fundamental to growing the state's economy." The survey showed that 34 percent of black voters had a very favorable view of Newsom, while only 5 percent of them had a very favorable view of Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox. Cox is in favor of repealing the gas tax. He also says that California's many taxes make the state unaffordable for working families. "California's sky-high sales taxes, vehicle license fees, and the highest gasoline taxes in the nation are a major reason so many families just can't make ends meet anymore. These high fees are a major reason California now has

the highest poverty rate in the nation. The most urgent need right now is to repeal the new vehicle license and gas tax increases," said Cox, according to his campaign website. According to the poll, African Americans followed a familiar pattern on national issues. The survey showed that about 84 percent of black voters had an unfavorable view of President Donald Trump. This is not surprising since he criticized former NFL player Colin Kaepernick and other players who knelt in protest of police violence. Trump also called African nations "sh*thole countries." The survey showed that 53 percent of black voters said opposing the Trump administration's agenda was a high priority. African-American voters listed public education, eliminating racial (continued on page 3)

Apparently, killing a 12-year-old Black holding a toy gun doesn't disqualify Timothy Loehmann from getting another police badge. The former Cleveland cop is again on a police force. Loehmann is now a part-time officer with the Bellaire Police Department in rural Ohio, according to The Intelligencer. The Police Chief Richard "Dick" Flanagan said he believed Loehmann deserved a second chance. "He was cleared of any and all wrongdoing," said Flanagan. "He was never charged. It's over and done with." The Rice family attorney, Subodh Chandra, said in a statement: "Ms. Rice believes that Timothy Loehmann does not belong on any police force, anywhere, period. Someone with his record should not be subjected upon the citizenry. But she does hope that this means that he will not ever return to Cleveland." On Monday, Rice's mother, Samaria, told The Daily Beast she fell to her knees when she received the news of Loehmann's hiring.

"It put me in a state of shock," she said. "It was just a feeling of numbness through my whole body." Rice said she is launching a callin and letter-writing campaign, asking people to contact the town of Bellaire to get Loehmann's job offer taken away. In November of 2014, Loehmann was one of the responding officers to a 911 call about a boy with a gun at a rec center. The caller identified that the gun was "probably a fake." But when the officers arrived on the scene, Loehmann, who was a rookie at the time, waited less than four seconds before exiting his police cruiser and gunning Rice down. Neither Loehmann nor his partner, Officer Frank Garmback, attempted to give Rice any medical assistance for four minutes following the shooting. Rice died the following day. Loehmann was not indicted for the shooting. A Cuyahoga County grand jury and Cleveland's Critical Incident Review Commission cleared him. In 2016, the city of Cleveland was ordered to pay the Rice family $6 million in a wrongful death suit. Loehmann was fired from the force in 2017 for lying about his previous job history

San Bernardino County Grand Jury Receives Excellence in Reporting Award for its 2016-2017 SB County News The California Grand Jurors’ Association has presented the Grand Jury Reporting Award to the San Bernardino County Grand Jury for its 2016-2017 report titled “Apple Valley Unified School District Police Department.” The California Grand Jurors’ Association is a statewide nonprofit organization of former grand jurors with the mission “to promote, preserve and support the grand jury system through training, education and outreach.” The annual Grand Jury Reporting Award recognizes reports of high quality, have had a positive impact on the community, and increased awareness of the California grand jury system. From January 2014 through December 2016, the Apple Valley Unified School District Police Department (AVUSD-PD) ordered an inordinate number of vehicles towed from public roadways during a 2-year period of time. In most cases the violations were outside of the department’s au-

thority. All were towed by a single tow company. During the same period, there was a decline in student-related interactions and oncampus activity by the police. The investigation led to corrections in policy. The award was presented on October 1st at the association’s 37th annual conference held in South Lake Tahoe. Norma Grosjean, San Bernardino County Grand Jury Assistant, Sharon Bragg, San Bernardino Superior Court Administrative Services Supervisor, and Ron Zurek, member of the 2016-2017 Grand Jury, attended the conference and accepted the award on behalf of the San Bernardino County Grand Jury.
