Prosecutors Won't Charge Trump Supporter Who Threatened Don Lemon's Life A threat on a man's life isn't a pressing issue, according to the District Attorney's office in Manhattan.

(Hugo C. Valdez, Victor Valley News) Lajuana Evadne’ Louise Phillips Victorville—On Tuesday October 2, 2018 in the city of Victorville, Ca., at 14856 7th street, an unarmed African American female Lajuana Evadne Louise Phillips was shot and killed by a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Miss Phillips had gone to the used car lot repeatedly after purchasing the vehicle about a month earlier. Due to the check engine light coming on while driving she kept going back often to have them repair the problem. On one of her visits she was told by an unknown male employee, according to family members to “suck his penis and he would fix the car properly.” Miss Phillips told her brother and a cousin about the disturbing incident. She was very upset and it is unknown if a police report was made regarding the lewd behavior at the place of business.

On the date of her death she went to the dealership to have the problem fixed and some kind of dispute ensued according to witnesses. American News has not been able to verify the official account of the story. Miss Phillips younger brother tells American news that he was speaking with his sister on the phone as she was sitting in her car crying and saying “all I want is for them to fix the engine light problem.” He said he was in Los Angeles at the time so he told her to drive out and head to the school and get her kids. Jerry Phillips her brother, says his sister said, “I am leaving to go get my kids,” and she hung the phone up, and that was the last time he spoke to her. He said he kept calling her back but she never answered.

It is alleged that there was an assault taking place at the dealership and miss Phillips was the suspect. It is also alleged in the official press release that she, miss Phillips had a misdemeanor arrest warrant for driving on a suspended drivers license. The sheriff’s department press release says the officer told miss Phillips about the warrant and she was not cooperative. Miss Phillips got into her car. The release says that the deputy sprayed her with OC spray (commonly known as pepper spray). How did the deputy get in front of the car in order for miss Phillips to drive toward him after being sprayed with OC spray? How was she able to get to her car, get in and start to drive?

Did this deputy place himself in the path way of the car and claim she was driving toward him?

There are serious training issues with this deputy and his chain of command when you start killing unarmed citizens.

If either is true above, what does

this say about the treatment of people of color or any citizen if a deputy sheriff feels that he must use deadly force to do his job.

Miss Phillips was shot in the left side of her head by an unknown number of shots. An unknown number of shots hit her vehicle.

All shots are on the left side of her vehicle. How do you get shot in the left side if the person is driving toward you?

The family members say that after miss Phillips was killed, members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department decided to travel to miss Phillips home almost 20 miles away to search her residence. For what?

They searched her storage locker, for what? Her three children were in school and were turned over to child protective services.

Mrs. Betty Phillips, the mother of Lajuana says that she wanted to personally see where her daughter was shot. She said she was advised not to look at her daughter’s remains in the condition she was after being shot in the head. Betty says that “she saw that the deputy shot her daughter through the left ear lobe and the bullet exited her forehead”. At that moment Betty went silent and said, “all I can think about is my daughters three children ages 11, 7, and 5 years. She went on to explain that her daughter’s husband passed away in 2013 from a massive heart attack and a brain aneurism. Betty explained that Lajuana moved to the desert to have a fresh start for her and the kids.

Other Shootings by The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Nathaniel Harris Pickett Jr

I am reminded of the lies that were told about Nathaniel Harris Pickett Jr. He was shot and killed in November 2015 in Barstow by Deputy Kyle Woods. Nathaniel had not committed any crimes, he was not armed. He was walking across main street in Barstow, in the cross walk as the light was green for him to do so.

Deputy Woods thought it was suspicious for Nathaniel to keep looking at him. Deputy Woods took it upon himself as a deputy sheriff in the city of Barstow where there is a police department to go after Nathaniel. Woods and his citizen ride along made a Uturn and went to contact and question Nathaniel. The press release stated that Nathaniel jumped the fence in front of the

El Rancho Motel. He did not he walked through the open gate.

After the two caught up with Nathaniel he was compliant and cooperated with Deputy Woods.

Yet he was shot twice in the upper torso and accused of attacking Woods. All contact was on video surveillance. The DA refused to file charges on deputy Woods for Nathaniel’s death. In the civil trial in March of 2018 the jury awarded the parents of Nathaniel 33.5-million-dollar judgment against the county of San Bernardino and deputy Kyle Woods for the civil rights violations of Nathaniel Harris Pickett Jr.

Keivon Young was shot 6 times in the back lower extremities by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies in Adelanto, Ca. His lawyer said this was a case of mistaken identity during a manhunt for a murder suspect. The 18year-old survived, but he was arrested for resisting arrest and possessing knives. He went through a trial that was politically motivated.

Deputies say they spotted Young “sneaking through people’s front yards and hiding behind bushes,” in their press release. Deputies fired their weapons after they said Young reached into his waistband and “withdrew two large knives. “But in court transcripts, the department’s own case agent says the knives came out after the shooting.

“The subject fell down to the ground,” said Edward Bachman.

“They moved in toward(s) him.

At that point, he removed 2 large knives from his waistband.

“Young didn’t know the men in plainclothes were deputies, he testified according to audio testimony released by his attorney. He said he didn’t hear them identify themselves as law enforcement.

A review of the audio found a garbled yell, a deputy says, “Let me see your (expletive) hands! “ and then immediate gunfire, but no clear sheriff’s department identification. He said he had the knives as protection against people who threatened him earlier that night.

“I didn’t even know who you guys were, you ride up on me with flashlights,” he said. “I didn’t know nothing.” After the shooting, Young is heard crying for help. Young asked the deputies if he was going to jail. “Probably not. I don’t know, dude. You

didn’t assault us, right?” said one of the deputies at the scene. “But you have to understand when we are cops and we are coming up on you…”Four months after the shooting, Young remains in jail.

His family is devastated. “It’s really, really hard,” said his mother, Mia Carter. “I just don’t know what to do. And then I hear my son crying to them, asking them, ‘Why did you shoot me?’” Young was arrested on two counts of assaulting a peace officer. Those charges were changed to two felony counts of resisting arrest and one felony count for possession of dirk or dagger. Young’s father, Claiborne, says he’s hoping his son gets a fair trial.” Somebody gonna have a heart, and understand and realize, ‘Hey, we messed up,’” he said.

In the end Keivon Young was kept in custody for 6 months as an innocent man. Inmates began to pressure him to take the deal offered to him by the DA. Keivon kept refusing until it just got to be to much to take. He finally plead guilty to 1 felony and a stiff 5 year probationary period.

Shot and killed by Barstow Police Department

A police spokesman in Barstow, California, confirmed that officer Jimmie Alfred Walker was one of the officers involved in the 5 April shooting. The death of the 26year-old father of three sparked national backlash after it was revealed that officers had fired a barrage of rounds into a car, injuring a young woman and killing Yarber, who was believed to be unarmed.

Blurry witness footage suggested that police may have fired more than 30 bullets into Yarber’s car. Police have claimed officers were responding to a call of a “suspicious vehicle” and that Yarber was “wanted for questioning” in a stolen vehicle case. Officials further alleged that he “accelerated” the car towards officers when they tried to stop him, “almost hitting one officer”.

A white nationalist sent CNN host Don Lemon death threats in the fall of 2017 via Twitter. Lemon tried to pursue legal action, but was recently informed that the District Attorney's office would not be pursuing charges.

He called police after receiving several threats from the anonymous man — a self-proclaimed white nationalist and Trump supporter. He also described himself as a "conservative pro-gun antiIslam anti-terrorist anti-leftist" via his Twitter bio.

The man sent Lemon messages including, "F**k you ni**** can't wait to stab your neck" and "U r a pile of rotting Dog s**t, racist, communist, socialist, Liberal moron asshole, I will find U, U will pay. I'll see u real soon…"

The New York Police Department did investigate the threats and determined them to be "ag-

grieved harassment." A police spokesperson even confirmed that Lemon was sent "numerous threatening and anti-Black messages to his Twitter inbox from an unknown individual."

However, no arrests were made.

The Manhattan D.A.'s office advised that they wouldn't be pressing charges against the man because they felt the incident outweighed the potential punishment, which would have been less than one-year served in jail.Last week, in an on-air conversation with Chris Cuomo, during a segment about the killing of two Black people outside a Kroger grocery store in Kentucky, Lemon said, "The biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right, and we have to start doing something about them."

I can now see this vision and validity of this statement. Your quote by Fredrick Douglass and your Mission statements amplifies my feeling. However I am confused after reading a recent commentary. If given attention front and center, a rebuttal should have been made to reject the contents which are basic lies! This is in reference to your recent front page commentary by Harry C. Alford.

The headline read “So Much Hate; So Little Tolerance” In these terrible time it is a topic that catches attention. However upon reading, it embraces the very subject it visibly condones. Did anyone read this article before it became the front and center material?

In his article he denigrate the Democrats when it’s the Republicans that are creating problems for the people especially Black people. He also sling false dispersions of mental illness on Kavanagh’s accuser. I ask one question especially; this woman

is well educated would you not be able to identify the person that unzipped your trousers while holding you down then grabbing your Penis?? There are even dispergence on the number of past years this took place. As a woman or Black you should understand the years of silence. You would only suffer more.

To give this tainted version of America’s problem is problematic for me when the opposite political party is the culprit. The problem is the ELITE must have its way and a foot must be on a Black man’s neck and racism most certainly leads the pack! Which is eliminated from the conversation.

New attacks on graphics processors endanger user privacy Hackers can use the graphics processing unit to spy on web activity, steal passwords, and break into cloud-based applications

By Holly Ober Computer scientists at the University of California, Riverside have revealed for the first time how easily attackers can use a computer’s graphics processing unit, or GPU, to spy on web activity, steal passwords, and break into cloud-based applications.

Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering computer science doctoral student Hoda Naghibijouybari and post-doctoral researcher Ajaya Neupane, along with Associate Professor Zhiyun Qian and Professor Nael Abu-Ghazaleh, reverse engineered a Nvidia GPU to demonstrate three attacks on both graphics and computational stacks, as well as across them.

The group believes these are the first reported general side channel attacks on GPUs. All three attacks require the victim to first acquire a malicious program embedded in a downloaded app. The program is designed to spy on the victim’s computer.

Web browsers use GPUs to render graphics on desktops, laptops, and smart phones. GPUs are also used to accelerate applications on the cloud and data cen-

ters. Web graphics can expose user information and activity.

Computational workloads enhanced by the GPU include applications with sensitive data or algorithms that might be exposed by the new attacks.

GPUs are usually programmed using application programming interfaces, or APIs, such as OpenGL. OpenGL is accessible by any application on a desktop with user-level privileges, making all attacks practical on a desktop.

Since desktop or laptop machines by default come with the graphics libraries and drivers installed, the attack can be implemented easily using graphics APIs. The first attack tracks user activity on the web. When the victim opens the malicious app, it uses OpenGL to create a spy to infer the behavior of the browser as it uses the GPU. Every website has a unique trace in terms of GPU memory utilization due to the different number of objects and different sizes of objects being rendered. This signal is consistent across loading the same website several times and is unaffected by caching.

ther GPU memory allocations over time or GPU performance counters and fed these features to a machine learning based classifier, achieving website fingerprinting with high accuracy. The spy can reliably obtain all allocation events to see what the user has been doing on the web.

In the second attack, the authors extracted user passwords.

Each time the user types a character, the whole password textbox is uploaded to GPU as a texture to be rendered. Monitoring the interval time of consecutive memory allocation events leaked the number of password characters and inter-keystroke timing, well-established techniques for learning passwords.

The third attack targets a computational application in the cloud. The attacker launches a malicious computational workload on the GPU which operates alongside the victim’s application. Depending on neural network parameters, the intensity and pattern of contention on the cache, memory and functional units differ over time, creating measurable leakage. The attacker

uses machine learning-based classification on performance counter traces to extract the victim’s secret neural network structure, such as number of neurons in a specific layer of a deep neural network.

The researchers reported their findings to Nvidia, who responded that they intend to publish a patch that offers system administrators the option to disable access to performance counters from user-level processes. They also shared a draft of the paper with the AMD and Intel security teams to enable them to evaluate their GPUs with respect to such vulnerabilities.

In the future the group plans to test the feasibility of GPU side channel attacks on Android phones.

The paper, “Rendered Insecure: GPU Side Channel Attacks are Practical,” was presented at the ACM SIGSAC Conference on Computer and Communications Security October 15–19, 2018, in Toronto, Canada. The research was supported by National Science Foundation Grant CNS1619450.

San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) parents whose children will attend middle school next school year have several options. They may decide to let their children attend their home school, or they may apply to have their children attend the very successful Richardson PREP HI Middle School or Rodriguez PREP Academy Middle School or the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Middle Years Program at Chavez Middle School.

Students must be eligible to apply. All applications to participate in these programs for the 2019– 2020 school year must be completed and post-marked on or before November 27, 2018. Applications may also be dropped off at the SBCUSD Secondary Educa-

tion Department, 4030 Georgia Boulevard in San Bernardino, before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27.

Richardson has the distinction of being a Gold Ribbon School Award winner and a two-time National Blue Ribbon school.

Students attending this school are not placed according to attendance boundaries. Eligible students must apply to attend Richardson PREP HI, and only students who meet the criteria will be entered into a lottery.

Rodriguez PREP Academy serves students in grades four through eight with a rigorous curriculum and educational philosophy. Rodriguez was named a California Distinguished School in (continued in next 2 columns)

2011 and its students have consistently scored above state targets on standardized tests.

Rodriguez also offers the School of Engineering and Design, which prepares students for college programs and careers in science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) fields. Fourth- and fifth-grade students attend Rodriguez based on the school’s attendance boundaries.

The I.B. Middle Years Program at Chavez offers students a world-renowned education which can lead to earning the internationally recognized I.B. Diploma.

In addition to all of the required I.B. middle years classes, Chavez also offers the I.B. Design Class, which exposes students to coding, robotics, and the application of 3D printing. Students who successfully complete the I.B. Middle Years Program at Chavez will be better prepared to enroll in the I.B. Diploma Program at Cajon High School or Arroyo Valley High School.

Parents of eligible students may submit applications for their child

to attend one or all of these programs. Admission will be determined by a random lottery drawing of all qualified applicants.

Even if a child’s name is drawn for multiple programs, each child will only be accepted into one school.

To qualify for admission in any of the programs, students must live within the San Bernardino City Unified School District attendance boundaries. They must also have earned Standard Nearly Met or better in both English-language arts and math on the most current California standardized test, have no more than 15 unexcused absences during the prior and current school year, maintained acceptable behavior during the prior and current school year, and been promoted to the next grade without consideration.

The random drawing will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at the SBCUSD Professional Development Center, located at 4030 Georgia Blvd. in San Bernardino. The drawing times will be at 4 p.m. for Chavez I.B. Middle Years Program, 5 p.m. for Rodriguez PREP Academy, and 6 p.m. for Richardson PREP HI. Students and parents need not be present at the drawing. Parents will receive official letters with their child’s lottery number.

Idaho teachers placed on leave after MAGA border wall Halloween costume Educational News

Superintendent Josh Middleton called the costumes “clearly insensitive and inappropriate” in an apology video. The teachers have been placed on paid leave, according to the StarTribune.

“We are better than this, we embrace all students who have a responsibility to teach and reach all students,” Middleton said.

There was probably no malicious intent, he added, just poor judgment. Middleton said the district would be conducting an investigation.

“We now have to own those decisions,” he said. “I’d just again want to share what’s going on and express my sincerest and deepest apologies to our families, to our patrons.”

rights advocate with the Idaho DACA Students group called the photos “extremely disheartening” and “heartbreaking,” according to CNN. “Imagine how some of the students felt when they walked into their classrooms on Halloween and saw their teachers (people they look up to) dressed like this?” she posted in a now-deleted Facebook post. “Students deserve better.”

In a Facebook post on Friday, the Idaho Education Association condemned the costumes.

“The messages conveyed are the antithesis of the beliefs and values of the Idaho Education Association and its dedicated members throughout the state,” the organization wrote.

Almost 13% of the school’s population is Hispanic, according to Idaho Education Trends.

Grambling State Approved to Offer Cybersecurity Degree

Grambling State University has been approved to offer the state’s first Bachelor of Science degree in cybersecurity. The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors provided their approval and support for the university’s program, according to a news release. The next step in the process is approval from the Louisiana Board of Regents.

Students will be eligible to begin enrolling in the program in fall 2019.

“With the vision of your team and the support of this Board, we are confident Grambling is prepared to educate cybersecurity professionals the market is demanding,” said Board Chair Al Perkins. “These graduates will be equipped with highly sought-after skills to protect us as technology becomes more prevalent in our daily lives.”

Grambling State faculty member, researcher and a member of the Louisiana Cybersecurity Commission Yenumula B. Reddy, Ph.D., has been spearheading the new program’s development.

“We are excited about the work of Dr. Reddy and his team,” said Grambling State President Rick Gallot. “Their continuous innovation in research and the classroom are paving the way for this program. We are excited for the impact their leadership and our system-level support will have on our state and economy.”

The news comes on the heels of an October report issued by the University of Louisiana System that said Grambling State University has doubled its fiscal health score since FY 2016, increasing from a 1.30 to a 2.60 as of the most recent report.

The fiscal health score, developed by the Louisiana Board of Regents, measures overall organizational health, factoring in important components including debt, revenue, and ability to operate.

“It’s been a team-wide effort,” Gallot said. “As a part of our com-

mitment to innovation, we’ve engaged new talent and alumni from across the U.S. who not only understand our charge but offer us expert perspectives and thought leadership.”

Leading the University’s fiscal health initiatives team is Martin Lemelle, Jr. the University’s Chief Operating Officer and Interim Vice-President of Finance. The initiative also includes team members who offer experience from higher education, Silicon Valley, and public accountancy.

“We’re an example of what’s possible when we partner,” said Lemelle. “The key to our successes has been a university-wide combination of collaboration and commitment. We’ve seen innovative ideas from every area, from our controller’s office to our academic units.”

The outputs of these collaborative teams are having a direct impact on the institution’s bottom-line. Some of those outputs include: $1.2 million in annual savings through participating in the Department of Education’s Historically Black College and University Capital Financing Program; Overall expense reduction of more than $6 million; A 320 percent annual increase in grants from federal and state government initiatives; and Realizing new revenue opportunities that include an increase in third-party commissions and its “Look for the Label” program which focuses on increasing licensing royalties.

“Grambling State University is experiencing a renaissance. Its vastly improved fiscal health is yet another indication of the effective leadership and hard work occurring at all levels of the institution,” University of Louisiana System President Jim Henderson said. “From its enrollment numbers to its operations, it’s exciting to see the rapid and significant advancement of this historic institution.”

(AP Photo/John Bazemore) ATLANTA (AP) — Last-minute legal decisions, a racist robocall and a protester wearing a giant chicken suit holding a sign that reads "too chicken to debate."

These are the scenes playing out amid the final furious days of the hotly contested and historic race for Georgia governor between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp.

A robocall apparently from a white supremacist group is injecting racism directly into the race, which has already been fraught with a race-laden debate over ballot access and voter suppression.

Abrams would be the first black female governor in U.S. history.

Kemp, who oversees elections as Georgia's secretary of state, vehemently denies charges that he's used his office to make it harder for minorities to vote.

Racist and anti-Semitic robocall Abrams and Kemp are both condemning an automated telephone call filled with racist and antiSemitic statements.

The call, sent to an unknown number of Georgians, impersonates Oprah Winfrey, the billionaire media titan who came to Georgia on Thursday to support Abrams.

The robocall says it was paid for by The Road to Power, a group organized by Scott Rhodes of Idaho.

He has been linked to several other racist robocalls, including

a recent effort in Florida, where Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum would become the first black governor in his state's history.

Kemp issued a statement calling the tactic "vile" and "contrary to the highest ideals of our state and country," and condemning "any person or organization that peddles this type of unbridled hate and unapologetic bigotry."

The Abrams camp likewise blasted the move but took a shot at Kemp and his highest profile supporter, President Donald Trump, who is campaigning in Georgia Sunday.

A top Abrams aide said both Kemp and Trump have contributed to a poisonous atmosphere, and that Kemp has been silent on previous racially loaded attacks on Abrams.

"These automated calls are being sent into homes just days before President Trump arrives, reminding voters exactly who is promoting a political climate that celebrates this kind of vile, poisonous thinking," said Abrams' spokeswoman Abigail Collazo.

John Lewis campaigning with Abrams Abrams sidestepped the issue Saturday in brief public remarks as she greeted voters at an Atlanta shopping complex along with her local congressman, civil rights icon John Lewis.

"Georgia has long been on a path of change and evolution," Abrams said. But she also said the election is about issues like expanding Medicaid insurance and focusing state spending on public education, job training and small business startups.

"I'm the only candidate with a plan to get that done and to do that without vitriol, without vilifying people," she added.

Lewis, the 78-year-old congressman who as a young man was severely beaten by police as he fought for voting rights in the Jim Crow South, put Georgia's choice in the broadest context: "This young lady is playing a major role in helping liberate all of us, liberate the state of Georgia, liberate the South, liberate America."

Kemp leans on economy Kemp did not address the robocalls at his only scheduled campaign stop Saturday at a Cuban restaurant in a diverse northAtlanta suburb.

Kemp told the packed crowd of supporters that the race for governor was a simple choice: one between continued economic prosperity under Republican leadership, or a turn to "socialism" under Democrats.

Kemp said the election was about "this generation and generations to come and the kind of state that we leave them."

He then blasted Abrams' policy pitches on health care and education.

"Too chicken to debate" The Kemp event was also hit by a number of protesters.

Two men protesting Kemp's immigration policy while Kemp was onstage were forcibly removed from the restaurant.

As a TV crew from MSNBC tried to film the hecklers being removed, a Kemp supporter physically blocked their path and the view of their lens.

And someone out front was wearing a giant chicken suit hold-

ing a sign that reads "too chicken to debate," alluding to Kemp withdrawing from a debate scheduled Sunday in favor of appearing in Macon with President Donald Trump.

Voter suppression battle Much of the final stretch of the race was consumed by a bitter battle over race and access to the polls.

Tensions grew after an Associated Press report in early October that more than 53,000 voter applications — nearly 70 percent of them from black applicants — were on hold with Kemp's office ahead of the election.

Many of the applications were flagged for failing to pass the state's "exact match" verification process, which requires that identification information on voter registration applications precisely match information already on file.

Kemp's office says that eligible voters on the "pending" list can still vote if they bring a proper ID that substantially matches their registration information.

He called the controversy "manufactured."

This latest wave of rallies and demands are a consequence of years of deepening economic crisis, petition collections, hundreds of appearances at City Hall, and various resident groups, predating the formation of GTU, standing up against rising rents in Glendale.

But critics say county officials aren't always trained to make the proper determination and the system can be particularly hard to navigate for recently naturalized citizens.

In response to a lawsuit brought by civil rights groups, a judge on Friday ruled the state unfairly burdens about 3,100 possible voters whose registration was flagged for citizenship issues.

She ruled that Georgia must immediately start allowing poll managers — not just deputy registrars — to clear flagged voters who show proof of citizenship.

In a statement, Kemp said the lawsuit forced the state "to waste time and taxpayer dollars for the judge to tell us to do something that we already do."

A recent New York Times report that said Google gave millions of dollars to some executives, like Andy Rubin ($90 million) in secret exit packages after they were accused of sexual misconduct.

The report sparked outrage among employees who organized via social media and yesterday walked out of offices around the world by the thousands.

Zurich, Dublin, Singapore, London and Hyderabad, India, and multiple U.S offices participated in the Google Walkout For Real Change.

In New York, where 3,000 employees walked out, Demma Rodriguez, a leader of the ERG, Black Googler Network, said if Google doesn't have a culture of equality for women, minorities and people with disabilities, "that means the company is failing everyone."

"We will bring the consequences," she said.

Google's Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai, who heads an executive leadership team that is predominantly white and male, and Eileen Naughton, vice president of people operations, said in an email memo that they are taking an "increasingly hard line on inappropriate conduct by people in positions of authority."

They said that Google had fired 48 people, including 13 senior managers, without pay for sexual misconduct over the past two years.

But saying something and doing something, especially from the top down, are two different things.

In DiversityInc's analysis of Google, the efforts to help women and minorities feel supported in their workplace is surface level.

Their site is well crafted with diversity and inclusion messages, but the reflection in leadership and in workforce representation has been stagnant for years.

Black workforce representation, at 2 percent, has remained static for four years. Representation of Hispanics (4 percent) and women

(31 percent) each increased by 1 percentage point from 2014 to 2017. Over that timespan, representation of Asians (35 percent) increased by 5 percentage points.

Note that Black, Latino and Asian representation are U.S. only, and representation of women is global.

Representation in leadership went up by 1 percentage point over four years for Blacks (2 percent) and Latinos (2 percent), while representation of women (25 percent) and Asians (27 percent) went up by 4 percentage points each. We don't know how Google defines leadership, but the pool is much smaller than the workforce. So, a 4 percentagepoint increase may just be one person.

Not to mention the department of labor's accusations of discriminating against female employees, their lawyers saying investigating a gender pay gap was too expensive, and little and very late response to a misogynistic memo circulated by an employee who was fired a year after the incident.

You can't get diverse peoples in your door if your culture stench is hypocrisy. They have never participated in DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies for Diversity competition.

Employees chastised the company slogan "Don't Be Evil" and held signs saying things like: "Time's Up", "Don't be evil, protect victims, not harassers," and "What do I do at Google? I work hard every day so the company can afford $90,000,000 payouts to execs who sexually harass my coworkers."

Some changes the employee movement is calling for include: end forced arbitration in cases of harassment and discrimination; a "transparent and inclusive process" for reporting sexual misconduct "safely and anonymously;" the chief diversity officer should answer directly to the CEO and make recommendations to the board; a commitment to end pay and opportunity inequity.

COMMENTARY: Let Your Voice Be Heard

Morgan Owens I was in my early twenties, he was a guy I was casually dating.

He wanted me to engage in activity that I wasn’t comfortable with.

I pulled away and he grabbed me by the wrist. I wasn’t sure if he was joking or not when he mentioned he could, “break my wrist if he wanted to.” I did nothing.

I was in my early twenties, he was my superior. He made sexually suggestive comments to me on the job. I laughed it off because I thought maybe he was just flirting with me. I did not flirt back but felt obliged to let it continue.

I didn’t want it to. I thought maybe I brought it on for being attractive. If I told anyone they would just say, “He’s just being a man.” I accepted it.

I was in middle school, he was my crush. A friend and myself decided to three-way call him and ask if he ‘liked’ me. He told my friend he thought I was cute, but I would be more attractive if I wasn’t “fat.” She asked me if I was okay, I said I was. I wasn’t okay, I said nothing about it for decades.

Why did I accept these things?

In my mind now, I am angered that I did not have the courage, selfrespect, or self-love to let my voice be heard. We are in crucial times where even as a young black millennial woman, our voices are often stifled or unheard simply because others think we shouldn’t have a voice, so why try?

At an early age, my crush made me aware of my body. If my body didn’t look how it was, I would be more desirable. When really my body type shouldn’t define my worth. I was worried the man I was dating wouldn’t want to date me anymore and I would be alone.

What’s so wrong with standing on your own two feet until you find someone who values and respects you as a partner.

I was worried I might lose my job if I rocked the boat and complained about my superior making me uncomfortable. I didn’t want to be viewed as, “that girl” who complained. She shouldn’t wear all that makeup to work or her dress shouldn’t have been that short. Just because of how I looked or what I wore made it acceptable for me to feel uncomfortable in a working environment? I should just accept the fact that I had it coming to me? No. But this

is the common thought trending in America today. “Why would someone just now report this or speak out?” Most likely because they didn’t want to feel judged, ridiculed and told they had it coming to them.

We are often our own worst barriers. Is it due to societal conceptions or our own thoughts? Either way we need to learn it’s not a ‘right’ or ‘privileged’ to speak up, it’s a given. We see our counterparts, even our men, speak up and tell their truths only to be applauded and praised. When we as women do it, we are being ‘emotional’ or ‘overreacting’ or even lying.

I spent over a decade being in relationships that took a toll on my self-esteem. Toxic relationships that suppressed my growth not only as a woman, but in my career and business. I often cancelled my own self-care plans in order to please who ever I was dating, such as working out or spending time with my friends and family. I was willing to compromise my feelings and priorities for another person. When you do that it allows others to walk over you. I use the word, “allow” because ultimately you are giving them permission to. I had to learn it was perfectly okay to say no, and if someone didn’t respect that no – then that was their problem and not mine.

Even now I contemplated about sharing parts of my story. In the back of my mind I told myself, “Who would listen to me?” “Who would believe me?” Then I remembered my why: Why I decided to tell my story, so that others would have the courage and self-love to tell theirs.

You never know who you may save by telling your truth. Is it scary? Yes. Is it necessary? Definitely.

I spent most of my life hiding my voice, afraid of being seen. I urge you all, to stand up and be heard. Even if it seems that no one is listening, they are. Never be afraid to speak your truth, no matter how painful or embarrassing. Your truth could be someone else’s truth who is too apprehensive to speak out. It could be what they need to speak out too.

A Short Documentary Examines Why Pregnancy is Killing Black Women Health/Fitness News

Screenshot Nationwide — The statistics are grim: Black women and black babies are losing their lives at a rate that’s 3-4x higher than any other ethnicity during pregnancy and childbirth in the United States.

After coming across news reports exposing this dire issue, Roman Debotch from BlackExcellence.com went looking for black women who had difficult pregnancies, lost babies, experienced dangerous births, dealt with racist medical providers and more. The result is a short documentary titled Pregnancy is Killing Black Women.

“I was shocked, really shocked when I came across multiple reports highlighting this issue in the black community. I had no

idea the numbers were the worst racial disparities when it comes to health care,” said Roman, the director and host of the 20 minute documentary. “I knew I had to make a film about this and share the stories of these women.”

A Short Documentary Examines Why Pregnancy is Killing Black Women...continued when she delivered her daughter.

She had to advocate for herself in the middle of the delivery to save her life. So, when she came across reports about the high maternal mortality rates in Texas, she knew she had to introduce legislation to look into this matter.

The number of organizations working to combat this national health crisis is growing. Among them are Great Beginning for Black Babies, Inc , located in Inglewood, CA, and Healing Hands Community Doula Project , located in Austin, TX. The representatives for both organizations spoke about the importance of a strong support

system a black woman needs when going through pregnancy, especially when it comes to dealing with medical professionals.

“My personal mantra is no black woman should go to a hospital on her own,” said Darline Turner, Executive Director of Healing Hands Community Doula Project. “I can’t tell you the number of times I have gone in and a woman is labouring and they’re asking her questions that had nothing to do with her her labour.”

Chicago Twin Sisters Clear Hurdles to Become Top Doctors

CDC confirms 80 cases of polio-like disease ByTauren Dyson Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday confirmed eight more cases of acute flaccid myelitis, a polio-like disease, bringing the total to 80 confirmed cases across 25 states this year.

The eight new cases were detected last week.

In addition, the CDC is investigating 215 suspected cases of AFM. It is unknown how many states are currently investigating cases of the disease.

The rare disease attacks the nervous system, particularly along the gray matter in the spinal cord. It can lead to muscle weakness and sudden paralysis, the CDC said.

About 90 percent of the 404 patients diagnosed with the AFM since 2014 have been children, though adults can develop the disease as well.

AFM symptoms include a drooping face or eyelids, difficulty swallowing or slurred speech.

CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told CBS This Morning,"It doesn't appear to be transmissible from human to human. We don't see clustering in families."

While experts have yet to pinpoint a geographic correlation for AFM, six children affected by the disease were reported to Minnesota health officials over a threeweek period in early October.

The CDC said AFM peaks in between years, normally during late summer and fall.

"Even with an increase in cases since 2014, AFM remains a very rare condition. Less than one in a million people in the United States get AFM each year," the CDC says.

Both say they’ve always been drawn to science and excelled academically which led to each being in Advanced Placement and Honors courses in school.

Frequently the only African Americans in their classrooms, the twins endured their share of racism. There’s a pressure to perform and be on when you’re the only person of color in a space, lest you inadvertently perpetuate stereotypes about your race to non-people of color, they said.

But, none of that prevented them from succeeding.

Both would go on to become elected as chief residents in their respective residency programs at the University of Illinois and today they are practicing physicians whose primary patients include many in underserved populations in Chicago – Brandi in the Department of Psychiatry and Brittani in the College of Medicine-Family Medicine.

In an effort to give back, the twins have co-founded Medlikeme.com, a resource for high school, pre-med and others to submit questions that will be answered by medical students, physicians and other professionals.

The website is scheduled to launch Nov. 5.

In a Q&A with NNPA Newswire, they spoke about their lives and profession.

NNPA: At what point did you decide you were going to be a doctor?

Brittani: I was not the kid that knew from an early age that I wanted to be a doctor. It was a slow realization. I do think the lack of societal images of black doctors made it hard for me to visualize myself in that role. I’ve always loved science and found enjoyment helping others, but being a doctor wasn’t something that honestly clicked as a viable option until the second half of college, after I saw a black female doctor, in person, for the first time in my life.

Brandi: I also decided in college.

I had the opportunity to study abroad in East Africa (my first time leaving the country!). As part of my program, I visited a hospital in Uganda. I remember that all of the doctors and the nurses looked like me. I was mesmerized as I watched them do their work.

After that semester, I knew for sure that I wanted to be one of them. I had considered being a doctor long before that but being in a hospital full of black doctors somehow made it feel more attainable.

NNPA: When you look at the numbers, the stats, obviously there are very few African American doctors and even fewer African American women doctors.

Was that a factor in your decision to be a doctor?

Brittani: The fact that there are very few African American doctors wasn’t a huge factor in my original decision to become a doctor. It is, however, something that both made the journey more challenging and ultimately more rewarding. It’s hard to envision yourself as something you don’t see. But as I got further into medicine, I realized that maybe I could be a visual reminder to someone who looks like me, that they can be anything. At least that’s my hope.

Brandi: When I decided to become a doctor, I did think about the fact there are few African Americans in the field. Knowing that didn’t exactly motivate me.

In fact, intimidated me. For much of my training, I felt like medicine was not meant for a person like me. It took years for me to feel like I was just as smart and capable as my classmates. Now, I know that I bring a unique perspective to medicine that the field desperately needs. When most people think of a doctor, they don’t picture an African American woman. My sister and I want to change that.

NNPA: When did you realize or find out that your sister would also become a doctor?

Brittani: I had done a pre-med summer program in New York City, and I remember telling Brandi about it. It was through that program that I got my first taste of what it was like to be a doctor and I was hooked. I was in the OR and saw a beating human heart. That changes you. I started thinking about medicine seriously then and talked to Brandi about it. I told her about seeing a black female doctor and how amazing that was. I started to believe I could do it and I think that rubbed off on her.

Brandi: It did rub off on me. By the time I studied abroad in Uganda during college, the seed had already been planted. Knowing that my sister and I would be going on the journey together made the decision much less nerve-wracking. We were each other’s biggest supporters throughout our journeys. I don’t know if I would have had the courage to pursue medicine if I did not have my sister by my side. We were each other’s inspiration.

NNPA: What has been your biggest challenge in pursuing and (continued on page 6)

Admit it: Sometimes you go out of your way to avoid a homeless person.

So do I. I’m not proud to say it, but it’s true. If I can’t cross the street to evade them, I search my brain for my pre-programmed “no” response to their inevitable request for a dollar.

“I ain’t got it, bruh,” is my goto line, which, too often, is simply the truth. It’s not danger that I feel. If you’re like me, the problem with having even a brief conversation with a homeless person is that you come away feeling conflicted.

Clearly, this person needs more than a dollar’s worth of help, but the problems they face are often so complicated, it breaks your brain. It’s easier to pretend not to see the problem than it is to fix it.

When I learned that the Community Alliance for The Homeless Inc. was hosting Project Homeless Connect-Memphis at the Cook Convention Center last week, I made a point to go. It’s an annual event that connects the homeless with organizations and resources to help them get stabilized – housing and job placement services; mental health and addiction counselors. The wait for eye exams and hair stylists were among the longest. It’s a feelgood story, no doubt.

More than that, though, I wanted to listen. What has to happen for one to find themselves sleeping under a bridge? Why is it so hard to stay off the streets?

What is it about being homeless that everyone should know?

Darrell Thomas, 54 Darrell Thomas is a double amputee. By trade, he’s a carpenter, a fix-it guy. He lost his right leg in 2003, while he was working on a car on the side of the road. His left leg?

“It was just a spider in my shoe,” he said.

Thomas said he found himself on the street earlier this year, after he reported unsafe living conditions in his apartment building.

He said his landlord retaliated by refusing his rent and evicting him for nonpayment.

“It’s a slick way of doing slum lord evictions,” Thomas said.

I mentioned that everyday people don’t really get to hear from people living on the streets.

Thomas took over from there.

“That’s because most people that got a home don’t want to be bothered with the people without a home,” he said. “They feel like the person living out here in these

streets, that’s currently homeless, that they’re here because that’s something they want to do.

“But that person isn’t homeless because they want to be. They’re there because certain life circumstances put them in that situation,” he continued.

“But the person in the home needs to realize,” he warned.

“They’re just one mistake from being homeless themselves.”

I asked if that was true for most people. Thomas chuckled.

“That’s true for the president,” he replied.

“There used to be a time when I felt like I could never sleep in a shelter . . . or even ask somebody for help,” he added. “But sometimes God puts you in a situation where you have to ask for help or you have to receive it whether you want it or not.”

He believes that if more people had the experience of homelessness, it would help them understand the difficult circumstances that force people onto the street – and the depths of despair that can come with it.

“If they were living through those exact same circumstances, the question they would have to ask themselves is this,” he said.

“Do I want to fight through this?

Or do I want to die?”

Open, candid and thoughtful, Thomas said, “A lot of people think I take my situation as a big joke, because I try to laugh all the time. But they don’t realize: I try to laugh all the time to keep from crying all the time.”

A few seconds after our interview, Thomas was approached by an acquaintance. They cracked jokes – the way black men do – before Thomas wheeled away.

Given what he’d just told me, I wondered if he was crying inside.

Felicia Jordan, 26 Felicia Jordan was getting her hair done when I spoke with her.

She and her two children – a sixyear old and an 11-month old – have been staying in shelters for about a year. Joblessness and sporadic child support made it impossible to pay her bills or keep a roof over her head.

I asked her what most of us – including me – take for granted that she doesn’t. In hindsight, it’s a stupid question. Jordan’s answer was obvious but poignant.

“Just waking up and knowing you have somewhere to sleep,” she sighed. “That you’re going to eat breakfast. That you don’t have to leave the house if you don’t want to.” (continued on page 8)

What you should know about Dsuvia, the new opioid drug 10 times stronger than fentanyl ABC News

An average of 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet, even as the nation experiences an opioid crisis and opioid drugs flood the market — including fentanyl, a major cause of recent overdose deaths — a

Food and Drug Administration advisory committee voted in favor of approving a new opioid, called Dsuvia, in early October.

It’s worth noting that the advisory panel’s vote does not mean that the drug has been FDA-approved. The FDA is expected to make its final recommendation on the drug by Nov. 3. However, people on the front lines of the epidemic have been weighing in to oppose the drug, including at least one senator and one member of the advisory board.

If you haven't heard of Dsuvia before, here are some things you should know. (continued in next 2 columns)

What you should know about Dsuvia, the new opioid drug 10 times stronger than fentanyl...continued What is Dsuvia?

Dsuvia is a tablet form of sufentanil that’s meant to dissolve under the tongue. It's 10 times stronger than fentanyl, an opioid drug already on that market that is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine. Fentanyl is also produced illicitly and is associated with many overdose deaths, often by those who are unaware that the opioids they're using contain fentanyl.

Dsuvia is intended for use with patients experiencing acute pain only in medically supervised settings, according to its makers.

Why was this drug developed?

The drug was developed to fulfill an unmet need, according to Dr. Pamela Palmer, anesthesiologist and chief medical officer at AcelRx, the maker of the drug.

“For acute pain management in a hospital, there hasn’t been a new opioid developed in many, many years,” she told ABC News.

Right now, if you broke your femur and went into an emergency room, you would either have to be stuck with a needle or they would just give you an oral pill that you would swallow and kind of wait for it to kick in, which could take up to an hour.”

Palmer said there weren’t any opioids available that could dissolve under the tongue for patients who aren’t specifically diagnosed with cancer, experiencing pain, and tolerant to other opioids. “Dsuvia is indicated for… the management of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate,” she said.

Palmer also said that Dsuvia could help health care providers prevent dosing errors that can occur when administering liquid formulations of opioid medications.

What about concerns of abusing Dsuvia?

In addition to making the drug available only in medically supervised settings, AcelRx has other plans for preventing abuse of the drug, Palmer said.

“We have much stricter audits and monitoring and controls where we will have oversight from our manufacturers, from our dis-

tributors, wholesalers, all the way to the medically supervised setting,” she said.

The company also has a contract with Denver Health, which runs the RADARS system — a group of programs that are used to monitor prescription drug abuse, misuse and diversion.

But Dr. Raeford Brown, chair of the FDA advisory committee on analgesics and anesthetic drug products, told ABC News that he has significant concerns about the drug being approved.

“It doesn’t seem reasonable to place another potent opioid on the market at this time, especially when we’re currently still writing 200 million prescriptions for opioids a year,” said Brown, who was not present for the FDA vote.

“The need to put a drug like this on the market is not demonstrated. The ability to manage that drug once it gets past the FDA is not demonstrated.”

“We know from looking at other potent opioids that have been put on the market in the last four years that once these drugs get past the FDA, there’s very little, if any, control over them, no matter what the sponsor says prior to the time they come on the market,” he added.

In a press release, Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts also expressed concerns about Dsuvia’s potential impact on the opioid epidemic. Massachusetts has some of the highest opioid overdose rates in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health.

“An opioid that is a thousand times more powerful than morphine is a thousand times more likely to be abused and a thousand times more likely to kill,” Markey said. “Even in the midst of the worst drug crisis our nation has ever seen, the FDA once again is going out of its way to approve a new supercharged painkiller that would only worsen the opioid epidemic. It makes no sense to approve an opioid painkiller that has no benefits over similar medications and against the advice of experts.”

He added: "I call on the FDA to reject the vote of the advisory

Electronic Frontier Foundation sues San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for cellphone tracking device records

By SCOTT SCHWEBKE | sschwebke@scng.com | Orange County Register PUBLISHED: November 5, 2018 at 12:43 pm | UPDATED: November 5, 2018 at 4:08 pm A nonprofit organization is suing the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to obtain search warrant records related to the agency’s use of a controversial cellphone tracking device.

San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, which aims to guard civil liberties in the digital age, states in the 30-page suit filed on Oct. 23 in San Bernardino Superior Court that it is seeking records involving the Sheriff Department’s use of cell-site simulators, also known as StingRays. The simulators masquerade as cell-phone towers and can scoop up the location of all cellphones in a targeted area, including those from individuals not suspected of committing any crime, according to EFF. The California Electronic Communications Privacy Act enacted in 2016 prevents any state law enforcement agency from obtaining electronic communication information without first obtaining a search warrant. The act also requires agencies to provide the California Department of Justice with information about warrants that don’t identify specific targets or if they want to delay notifying the target. The Department of Justice then is required to publish on its website information it receives from the agencies.

The lawsuit follows a Desert Sun analysis of Department of Justice records that found San Bernardino County law enforcement agencies were granted the most electronic search warrant digital records per capita in the state.

Specifically, the newspaper reported the San Bernardino

County Sheriff’s Department executed 168 electronic search warrants in 2016, 211 in 2017 and more than 330 so far this year.

The county has used cell-site simulators at least 231 times in the past year, according to EFF. In August, EFF filed a public records request with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to obtain search warrant information for a half-dozen cellsite simulator searches made public by the Department of Justice.

The request sought specific case numbers associated with the warrants so EFF could determine through court records, such as affidavits, whether the warrants were justified.

“We are seeking search warrant records to explore first whether CalECPA is working and, second, whether law enforcement agencies are complying with the laws’ warrant and transparency requirements,” EFF Senior Investigative Researcher Dave Maass said in a statement.

“The law is only as good as counties like San Bernardino’s compliance with its rules, which are intended to protect the highly personal and intensely private information contained on Californians’ digital devices. CalECPA was meant to provide the public with a check on law enforcement’s use of this highly intrusive tool.”

San Bernardino County has denied EFF’s public records request, saying it is vague and overly broad. The records, they say, are investigative in nature and thus exempt from disclosure.

Cindy Bachman, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, declined to comment on the EFF suit because it involves “pending litigation.”

Brittani: My biggest challenge came in the first few years of medical school. I had a very difficult transition. Brandi and I decided to go to different medical schools, in an experiment in a way, since we had always been with each other our entire lives. We wanted to learn who we were apart from each other. What I didn’t realize how much support I was losing by being away from her. I struggled to adjust. I felt like an imposter in those days; like I wasn’t smart or capable enough to be where I was. It took years to figure out that that was not true.

It was a lie I believed for a long time about myself, until I realized that I was bringing something valuable and unique to medicine that isn’t common. The academics actually came easier after that, and everything else fell into place.

Brandi: I think Brittani said it best. Those years that we were separated in medical school were really tough! I took a lot of train rides to visit Brittani during those years. I went through a similar “imposter syndrome” during medical school. I didn’t realize how much I had internalized the belief that I was not “supposed” to be a doctor. Overcoming that false belief was the most important things I did in my life.

NNPA: How can academic institutions and even families help improve the number of Black doctors in the country? Why do you believe African Americans shy away or at least fail to consider the medical profession?

Brittani: That’s a big question with a complicated answer. One reason I think African Americans shy away from the medical profession is because they don’t see representations growing up of black physicians. Most of us do not have doctors in the family or have friends who are doctors.

On top of that, there are very few media representations of Af-

rican Americans being doctors or holding other science-related careers. Again, it’s hard to imagine yourself being something you don’t see. So, I think those of us in medicine who are African Americans do have a responsibility to be as visible when we can manage, as a means of showing the next generation what’s possible.

There is also a very large barrier to entry to the medical field.

It’s a confusing thing to navigate if you do not have someone showing you the way. There’s also the extreme financial burden it places on applicants. That financial burden hits the African American community to a disproportionate extent as we are more likely than our peers to be from socioeconomically-disadvantaged backgrounds. There is institutional racism and sexism which are seamlessly built into our higher education and healthcare system to contend with as well. Those systems exert their damage in both overt and subtle ways over time. Those forces hurt you in material ways.

They undermine your confidence and hinder your ability to perform at your peak. With that in mind, a lot of us, especially African Americans, are starting off with additional barriers.

Brandi: As far as institutions go, I think too many operate under the premise that their work is done once they get a handful of African American or other minority students through their doors.

That shouldn’t be the case.

There are so many unique challenges that students of color face in higher education, that if institutions are serious about supporting diversity, they really have to be intentional about putting support systems in place. It’s not just about getting African Americans through the door but helping them thrive in an environment that was not designed with them in mind, as higher education was not.

NNPA: What’s your primary message to other black women who might aspire to be a doctor?

Brittani: I want them to know that although the road is long, it is worth it. At the end of the day, on the other side of the struggle, there are real people who need someone like you in their corner, fighting the good fight alongside them. Medicine needs you. Your future patients need you. You got this!

Brandi: You are smart. You are powerful. And you belong in medicine. Quiet the voices (inside and outside) that tell you differently. Your future patients will benefit from the perspective you bring, and your unique identity is your greatest asset. Remember that you are not alone.

NNPA: Which one of you are older and is there any pride being the older twin?

Brittani: I’m older (by two whole minutes!) and I like to think wiser as well! After all, I learned a lot about the world in those two minutes.

Brandi: Older does not necessarily mean wiser…clearly.

NNPA: Are you at all surprised at yours and your sister’s success?

Brittani: It’s surreal to have made it through medical school and residency and to be a practicing physician. It has been my “impossible” dream for so long. I think before I always thought of doctors as these superhuman beings that were just unreachable. Now I know that we doctors struggle and make mistakes just like everyone else. We are painfully human.

On the other hand, I believe a lot of success is a mental game. A lot of my strength came from my family and other loved ones, who always lovingly reminded me who I was. They overwhelmed me with positivity and support whenever I stumbled on this journey. Over time, I came to believe in myself the way they did. Once I started

truly believing in myself and my abilities, I got to the point where no negativity I encountered could keep me down for long. I just kept getting back up. When you have that attitude, I believe success is inevitable.

Brandi: Brittani put it beautifully, and I agree. I feel humbled by all that we have achieved. I’m looking forward to helping other achieve the same success.

NNPA: Can you describe MedLikeMe? Brittani: MedLikeMe is a free online community dedicated to minorities and non-traditional students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. In essence, we wanted to create the resource we wish we’d had when we were trying to figure out how to be doctors. High schoolers, pre-med and other pre-health students submit questions on the site, and real medical students, physicians and other professionals answer their questions. It is our attempt to bridge the gap between minorities and non-traditional students who are interested in medicine but don’t know where to start and those who have lived it. We also hope to highlight and share the stories of practicing professionals who have overcome struggle to succeed so that those in the community can have a source of inspiration. It’s definitely a work of passion.

Brandi: For us, it’s not enough to say, “we made it”. We want to help others do it too. It’s our way of giving back for the hundreds of people who have helped us on our journey through medicine.

We want to pay it forward. We’re hoping to change the face of medicine, together.

FILM REVIEW: A Private War

By Dwight Brown, NNPA News Wire Film Critic Sometimes real people are even more brave and courageous than fictional characters. That’s the case with war correspondent Marie Colvin. She was an American journalist who wrote for the British newspaper The Sunday Times, often risking her life to report from the frontlines and embattled areas where she felt it paramount to “Give voice to the voiceless.”

Colvin’s career at The Times started in 1985. This biographical film picks up in 1986 as she (Rosamund Pike, Oscar nominee for Gone Girl) careens from one dangerous location to the next.

Following Tamil Tigers rebels in Sri Lanka, she gets caught in a crossfire when Sinhalese troops attack and shrapnel strikes her causing the loss of sight in her left eye. There’s the mass grave she uncovers, by sheer will and determination, outside of Fallujah, Iraq. Chronicling attacks by the Taliban on civilians and US aid convoys in Afghanistan puts her in the middle of another humanitarian crisis. And, she’s there in Libya to interview dictator Muammar Gaddafi shortly before his downfall.

For every step she takes, military Humvee she rides in and corner she hides in, you are by her side. Bullets wiz by. Exploding bits and pieces fill the air. Bombs rain down. And as that happens, Colvin flinches for a second, then heads back to where the story is.

Back to investigating and sharing the truth about innocent people whose lives are being torn apart by war, rebellions and invasions. How does she do it? Colvin says, “You’re never going to get to where you’re going if you acknowledge fear.”

The source material for the thoroughly compelling script by Arash Amel is Marie Brenner’s 2012 Vanity Fair article “Marie Colvin’s Private War.” The film’s engaging narrative weaves Colvin’s harrowing experiences together with her personal life: She’s separated from her husband

Rosamund Pike in “A Private War” and dating a very rich man (Stanley Tucci). Her testy relationship with her ambitious editor (Tom Hollander), who spins her articles into attention-grabbing journalism that nets Colvin Foreign Reporter of the Year awards, can be confrontational.

There’s also the friendship she builds with freelance photojournalist Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan, Fifty Shades of Gray), whom she hires in Bagdad.

With the fact-based storyline, historic incidents and vibrant relationships in place, it is up to a very perceptive and grassrootstype filmmaker to execute from the blueprint. The searing 2017 documentary City of Ghosts chronicled the exploits of Syrian activists, a group called “Raqq Is Being Slaughtered Silently;” it followed the resistance movement as its country was being invaded and coming under the rule of ISIS. That raw, BAFTA Awardwinning documentary was shot in the middle of the assault. Matthew Heineman was the doc’s bold director/producer/cinematographer. He marks his feature film narrative debut at the helm of this ferociously authentic bio/ drama.

Heineman’s keen ability to shoot disturbing battle scenes and guerilla fighting and capture the dangers of warfare is expected. His knack for making this film so personal, and delving into Colvin’s private life (marital strife, drinking and sexual dalliances)

with equal dexterity is a pleasant surprise.

Heineman is aided by a brilliant cinematographer (Robert Richardson, JFK, Salvador, Natural Born Killers) and relatively judicious editor (Nick Fenton) who intertwines the past, present and Colvin’s haunting visions together into a cohesive montage, marred by too many hallucinations.

The production design (Sophie Becher), art direction (Matthew Hywel-Davies) and costume design (Michael O’Connor) are impeccable. While the musical score (H. Scott Salinas, Cartel Land) whips emotions. like fear and grief, into a frenzy and an entrancing theme song, “Requiem For a Private War,” which is written and sung by Annie Lennox, leaves a somber impression.

Rosamund Pike has the difficult task of making a stalwart toughas-nails writer an empathetic character. She does so gracefully by displaying an underlying sense of vulnerability that hides under a callous surface that protects Colvin from an onslaught of the kind of grave danger that would scare a hardened war vet. Yet, she is just a writer and her only weapons are a pencil, a cell phone and a newspaper. As a war correspondent, who is constantly under siege, physically and emotionally, she wrestles with the toll it’s taken on her. Pike says: “The chatter in my head won’t go quiet until a quart of vodka is in me.”

Supporting actors raise Pike’s performance up. Colvin’s best friend Rita, played by Nikki Amuka-Bird (The Children Act), suggests her PTSD-suffering pal seek treatment. Tucci’s character Tony Shaw lets the rough-riding journalist relax in her off hours, soothed by love-making. Hollander as the editor Sean Ryan spars with Colvin, taking her abuse and supporting her, too: Says the writer to her boss, “I see it, so you won’t have to.”

The most intimate friendship on view is that between the veteran reporter and her photographer Paul Conroy, who is played in the most understated way by Jamie Dornan. In this one performance, Dornan wipes away the dubious memories of his performances in the Fifty Shades of Grey series.

Periodically as the footage progresses and noted incidents occur, words appear on the screen indicating that the event happened in a specific amount of time before Homs, e.g. “Two years before Homs.” It’s an ominous way to lead viewers to the year 2012 in Homs, Syria.

Twenty-eight thousand civilians were trapped, and the Syrian government claimed that innocent people were not being bombed. Colvin knew otherwise and charged into the middle of the carnage seeking the truth.

There is a part of Colvin’s behavior that parallels that of extreme sports junkies. Something is propelling her way beyond the scope of a dedicated journalist looking for the next big story. Her compulsive behavior lacks a basic survival skill that stops most people from entering life-threatening situations. It’s a fascinating, complicated and addictive psyche; the kind that often shapes central characters in pageturner novels. Only in this case, this story is far from fiction.

Lou Yeboah Please do not let that be your portion. “Could’ve, would’ve, Should’ve!” I am writing to warn you against the very real danger of procrastination, meaning deciding later on to accept Christ as your Savior. In the Bible, Paul writes, For God says, “… Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” [2 Corinthians 6:2].

Don’t be like Lot. Lot lingered…When it was Time for Decisive Action.

Lot lingered…When Heavenly Messengers Were Urging Him to Go. Lot lingered…When Judgment was Imminent. Stop Lingering. Neither time, nor death, nor judgment linger.

Decide for Christ before it is too late. For [Isaiah 55:6] says, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” Procrastination can cost you your soul in the end [2 Corinthians 5:20–6:2].

Listen, none of us can say with certainty, when it is our time. In [James 4:14] the Scripture says, “…What is your life? It is even a vapour that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” Again, in [Proverbs 27:1] “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” Those two scriptures alone should motivate you to seek God. I tell you, time is of essence. The time to act is now!

You know when Paul reasoned with Felix “of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee” [Acts 24:25.] So far as the Bible records and early history go, Felix never called for Paul. Felix is suffering the torments of Hell, not because he wanted to go there, but because he waited for “a convenient season.” I want you to know that the Bible says

that when it comes to some things, we should never delay.

Delay in making a response. This is the most dangerous type of procrastination. Life is short, and we do not know what will happen tomorrow [James 4:1314]. The Bible urges us to get right with God today. Jesus could return at any time; we do not know when [Luke 12:40]. But Jesus illustrated the importance of being prepared for His coming in [Matthew 25:1-13]. In this parable, ten virgins await the arrival of the bridegroom and the commencement of the wedding feast. Five of the virgins were prepared for his arrival; five did not attempt to prepare until it was too late, and they were left behind. Jesus calls the unprepared virgins “foolish.” I tell you in the matter of our spiritual life, we dare not procrastinate.

Then he said to me, “These words are faithful and true.”

And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place. Behold, I am coming quickly…

For the time is at hand. He who is unjust, let him be unjust still, he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.” [Revelation 22] Jesus told the Sardians to do five things to overcome. “Wake up!” Jesus says. “Wake up! Be alert! Open your eyes wide! Slap yourself awake!” If you are to survive you must get out today.

Tomorrow may be too late. Wake up and do it now! Jesus says and strengthen the things which remain which were about to die.

Remember what you have received and determine to keep it! Repent while there is still time to overcome. If you do not, Jesus says, “If therefore you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.

“Now is the Appointed Time!” He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Witness For Justice #917

Living While Black Trayce Potter Minister for Youth & Young Adult Engagement Scripture teaches us that we were each made in the image of our divine creator and therefore we all carry a bit of the holy within us. The Church has taught us to love one another as ourselves, and society implores the golden rule—do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Life is filled with these simple lessons for communal living, and yet our society has lost the ability to be neighborly or at least decent to one another. In the last week there have been four incidents of African-Americans being singled out for seemingly innocent acts of everyday living that somehow threatened the existence of those who didn’t look like them.

In Brooklyn a nine-year-old child was accused of sexually assaulting a white woman. The woman claimed the boy grabbed her inappropriately, and she demanded action be taken by the police after calling 911. In the video the child is visibly shaken and terrified by what is taking place as onlookers gather around.

While this particular scenario was resolved with a simple surveillance camera video, there are countless other incidents that are not. Too often the unchecked power and privilege of some has led to black bodies lying in the street covered in a white sheet, or brown bodies left in prison cells, or minorities standing in courtrooms without representation or a chance. No one wins, not our society as a whole or the individuals caught up in the latest social media frenzy. The only thing that is accomplished is racism receives a new name and a

short cycle in the media.

As a mother, I can’t help but feel for the little boy. While he escaped punishment today, what emotional damage was inflicted on him by having an elder yell at him, threaten him, and unjustly call the police on him? What lessons has he learned about society, power, and his own existence?

The time has come for us to have honest and transformative dialogue about racism and privilege.

It can’t be a one-time round table discussion, nor can it be a conversation that we come to kicking and dragging our feet. If we are going to live out the call to love our neighbor, or at least do justice, then it starts with honoring the personhood of all regardless of the color of their skin. No one can sit by idly as another is verbally assaulted or threatened.

We all have a voice and can use it to amplify the cries of those who are unable to, or simply too tired to. We can’t just record a cell phone video and think that’s enough because our children matter and should never be in a situation where they are powerless and fearful.

We cannot grow weary of fighting against racism and its injustices because we can never be free until we are all free to enjoy the pursuit of happiness and daily living without worrying who has a phone to call the police today.

Rihanna and Axl Rose to Donald Trump: Stop Playing Our Music at Your Rallies

When she sends the message less than 72 hours before a crucial midterm election they notice even more.

President Trump’s constant use of popular music from artists who do not support him continues. Artists from Paul McCartney to Bruce Springsteen to Steven Tyler have publicly asked for Trump to stop playing their music during the 2016 campaign. Prince’s estate has done the same. In likely violation of the public performance rights rules, Trump and his staff continued to play the music and disregard requests.

Impressively, even for Donald Trump, he managed to win the negative attention of Rihanna and Guns n’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose in the same 24-hour period. Both expressed an-

noyance that Trump has recently played their music at his rallies.

Forty-eight hours before Election Day, Washington Post political reporter and Washington Bureau chief, Phil Rucker tweeted, “It’s been said a million times, but here’s a million and one — Trump’s rallies are unlike anything else in politics. Currently, Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music” is blaring in Chattanooga as aides toss free Trump T-shirts into the crowd, like a ball game.

Everyone’s loving it.”

Less than a day later Rihanna tweeted in response.

“Not for much longer…me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up philip!”

Trump also managed to win the negative attention of Axl Rose, the lead singer of Guns n’ Roses. Rose, 56,

has 1.4 million followers on Twitter.

“Just so ya know… GNR, like a lot of artists opposed to the unauthorized use of their music at political events, has formally requested r music not be used at Trump rallies or Trump associated events,” Rose tweeted.

“Unfortunately, the Trump campaign is using loopholes in the various venues’ blanket performance licenses which were not intended for such craven political purposes, without the songwriters’ consent,” Rose added.

Rose also tweeted a message that read “vote blue bitches,” during his Twitter tirade on performance rights.

“We have an individual in the WH that will say n’ do anything w/no regard for truth, ethics, morals or empathy of any kind, who says what’s real is fake n’ what’s fake is real,” Rose continued.

Rihanna has made her efforts on Twitter pointedly political. She tweeted support of Florida ballot initiative “FLORIDA: You have the opportunity to make history this election. Let’s #bringithome. Vote @andrewgillum.

And VOTE YES on Amendment 4 to restore voting rights to folks who have already paid their debt to society.

VOTE on November 6th!” she posted on Twitter on November 4.

If Amendment 4 passes in Florida over a million more registered voters could be added to the rolls.

Adelanto City Manager Gabriel Elliott denies allegations of sexual harassment by former employees. He says the allegations are made up, and that Mayor Rich Kerr may have had something to do with it.

Former Adelanto City Manager Gabriel Elliott filed a lawsuit Wednesday alleging he was wrongfully fired for speaking out against illegal activity and trying to expose corrupt practices.

The suit, filed in San Bernardino Superior Court, names the city, Mayor Rich Kerr, and City Manager Jessie Flores as defendants. Elliott, 58, a Rancho Cucamonga resident, served less than a year as city manager before he was fired in July. He filed a claim against the city in August as a precursor to his lawsuit.

In September 2017, according to the lawsuit, Kerr and Flores conspired to sell the city’s public works yard and emergency operations center — below market value — to a man who planned to sell the property to marijuana cultivators at a “substantially higher price.” Kerr and Flores, the suit alleges, were expected to receive financial kickbacks from that sale.

Adelanto Mayor Rich Kerr Elliott, who has been cooperating in an FBI investigation into alleged corrupt practices in Adelanto, also alleged Kerr and Flores were receiving bribes from the marijuana growing industry and ordering code enforcement officers in the High Desert community to “stand down,” preventing them from enforcing violations against several marijuana businesses.

On Nov. 15, 2017, Elliott and thenCity Attorney Ruben Duran, according to the suit, met with the FBI and

Elliott told special agents that Kerr received a $200,000 bribe from the sale of the city yard. It resulted in further attacks by Kerr and Flores against Elliott. They would bypass his authority and continued to humiliate him and undermine his authority in front of his subordinates, the lawsuit states.

On numerous occasions, Kerr ordered Elliott to fire certain employees who were not loyal to Kerr. When he refused, the suit claims, Kerr became “enraged and threatened (Elliott) with his own termination.”

“It kills (Kerr and Flores) not to be able to get a cut of the action. So they resort to corruption,” Elliott’s attorney, Tristan Pelayes of the Riverside firm Wagner & Pelayes, said in a statement Thursday. “Now they are ruining people’s lives and careers who discovered and reported their schemes.”

Elliott also alleges Duran was complacent about the conduct of Kerr and Flores and was a “tacit co-conspirator in allowing the illegal conduct to occur without protest or resignation.”

In a statement Thursday, Duran said: “The allegations in the complaint related to my alleged conduct, action or inaction are utterly without merit, completely untrue and outrageous.

“Moreover, I am bound by the attorney-client privilege not to disclose the details or content of any communications with or on behalf of my client, and (continued in next 2 columns)

I would never discuss any meetings or interactions with federal law enforcement unless authorized to do so.”

Elliott also informed the FBI that Kerr allegedly solicited donations from businesses for his wife’s nonprofit, which made the donors feel forced to give in exchange for Kerr “getting things done.”

When Kerr and Flores were unable to gain support from other City Council members to fire Elliott, they solicited three employees or contract employees to file sexual harassment complaints against the then-city manager, according to the suit. It led to his suspension on Dec. 20, 2017.

Elliott maintained from the beginning

that the allegations were trumped up, that Kerr was behind it, and, as stated in the lawsuit, it was a “sham investigation.”

Still, the investigation, completed in December 2017, led to Elliot’s termination in July 2018. “The investigation was a sham, had no factual basis, and calls into question whatever the investigator did to reach a predetermined conclusion while claiming an attorneywork-protected privilege to justify keeping the investigation confidential,” according to the lawsuit.

Adelanto spokesman Michael Stevens said in an email Thursday that the city does not comment on pending litigation.

Though she’s grateful to stay in a shelter, the rules stipulate that each day she and her children must leave by a certain time each day, “even if we don’t have gas or a bus to catch,” she said. “ As for work, Jordan would like to work in a warehouse. “They usually pay every week,” she said.

“When you have kids, you can’t wait two weeks to get paid. You have to make sacrifices.”

And like any parent, she puts on a brave face for her children.

“You know, you have to keep a smile in place for your kids,” she said. “You don’t want them to see you down because you don’t want them to get down.

“My oldest questions me,” she continued. “Like ‘Ma, when are we going home? When are we going to have a place?’ She’s very advanced.”

And like many parents, she fibs to keep hope alive.

From the limited conversations I had, I realized that there were dozens, if not hundreds, of similar stories wandering around that convention hall. I thought back through the lean times in my own life, when I was living hand-tomouth. In hindsight, I was probably closer to homelessness than I even realize now – just one more bad break.

I’m not about to say that I now have a dollar for every panhandler who asks. Alcoholism, addiction and mental health problems are still persistent among Memphis’ homeless population, and a dollar won’t fix that.

But I’m grateful that the Community Alliance for the Homeless hosts this event each year, and I’m grateful for the volunteers who help with it. It gave me a chance to see beyond my own biases, to see that underneath the torn clothes, the odors and the unkempt hair, there’s another human.

Teaching today's generation comes with its own challenges but being susceptible to verbal or physical abuse by a student is outrageous. Marston Riley, who is Black, is said to be a dedicated and beloved music teacher. But he reached his boiling point on Nov. 1 when a student called him the n-word, and threw a basketball at him during class.

According to students who witnessed the fight, the altercation began when Riley, age 64, advised the student that he was in violation of the school's uniform policy. Riley, repeatedly, told the 14-year-old student to leave his class. The student got in the teacher's face and continued shooting off a barrage of racist slurs, including the N-word. It was also reported that he threw a basketball at the celebrated teacher.

Apparently the insults and disrespect proved to be too much, Riley punched the student in the face sending him reeling and continued to pummel the teen as other students watch. Eventually, school staff members arrived and separated the two.

The incident was caught on cellphone video.

"It was just back and forth, back and forth, and then the teacher just decided to throw a punch and that's when everything happened," a student said.

The fight resulted in Riley's arrest. The student was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries and released. Riley is facing termination, and a possible jail time.

The Los Angeles Unified School District said in a statement: "We take this matter very seriously and do not condone violence or intolerance of any kind.

Los Angeles Unified is cooperating with law enforcement in investigating this incident."

Ironically, many students, parents and colleagues came to the teacher's defense as stories about the incident began to circulate.

As of Monday afternoon, it had raised just over $37,000.

"Be mindful that the school district is looking at dismissing him and I would not doubt if the student's parents are looking into pressing criminal charges," Jimenez wrote. "I am sure Mr. Riley will need money to pay any fines, fees and lawyers. For those who continue to donate, Thank you!"

Although Riley certainly acted inappropriately, the student had no problems calling a Black man the N-word. What kind of people are raising him? He was given a directive to leave the class for being disrespectful but instead he jumped in the face of an educator at least 35 years his senior.

That is, if this had been two adults, out on the street, who got into a physical altercation, it's possible that being called the N-Word -- not to mention the other provocations - might have resulted in Mr. Riley's response being, legally, deemed justified. Unfortunately, because it's an adult vs. young teen, educator vs. student situation, some sanctions are in order.

6 arrested in 'imprecise' plot to attack French leader Macron

Judicial officials said the suspects were identified in an "imprecise and loosely-form" scheme that involved "violent action" against Macron.

French intelligence agency DGSI said the six suspects were arrested at three locations -- Isère, southeast of Lyon; Moselle, on the border with Germany and Luxembourg; and Ille-et-Vilaine, in the northwest near the city of Rennes.

France's BFM-TV reported they

ranged in age from 20 to 60 and belonged to the far-right movement. The right-leaning National Rally, led by former Macron foe Marine Le Pen, has gained more popularity than Macron's centrist La Republique En Marche Party in recent opinion polls.

Macron was participating in World War I ceremonies in Verdun, about 160 miles away from Paris, when the arrests were made.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are expected to visit France with other world leaders this weekend to recognize the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I.
