EnPleinAirTEXAS has for over a decade been a staple art event that has enriched San Angelo and its art community. Through this event the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts has brought many artists to see and paint the beautiful landscapes of West Texas. Their visit, their paintings and the sale of their artworks made San Angelo a name to be recognized among plein air painters and collectors nationwide.

When event organizers Barbar Rallo and Treva Boyd decided to retire, they formulated a path different from the traditional painting competition. They envisioned a groundbreaking ranch fellowship.

This year, thanks to the hospitality and support of Malinda and Jamie Huffman, owners of the Coralina Ranch, Jennifer and Tim Crutchfield of the Field Ranch, and Libby and Joe Mims of the Bar Y Bar Ranch, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts presented four past EnPleinAirTEXAS winners the opportunity to participate in a three-week residency at a ranch. Two of the four selected artists, Liz Bonham and Katie Dobson Cundiff were here in June, and Carla Bosch and Suzie Baker will be here in September, capturing the essence of West Texas ranch life with their own distinct vision, style, and palette.

SAMFA’s Gallery Verde exhibitions of the fellowship artists’ studio work has given the opportunity for collectors to see the artists’ whole oeuvre. The next Painted Ranches exhibition will open on September 6th at 417 S. Oakes St.

Workshops by the artists have accompanied their residencies. A workshop by Carla Bosch will be held on September 7th and Compos Strategies for Painting Success by Suzie Baker on September 14. Both workshops will take place at SAMFA’s Grand Hall.

The artists will have the opportunity to give back to the San Angelo community by teaching at local schools. They will participate in a day of art engagement and teaching with local school children.

In October, the traditional EnPleinAirTEXAS event time, the well-known EPAT Art Sale at The Stables in Fort Concho will take pl SAMFA will host a preview and sale event on October 25th, before it opens to the public the following afternoon.

On October 26th, SAMFA will hold a paint-out with our partners at the Chicken Farm Art Center. Families and artists of all ages are welcome. Participants can win $100 prizes for the top selection of each of our fellowship artists.

To culminate this year’s EnPleinAirTEXAS and after a full day of family, art painting and buying, the public is invited to dinner and dancing with country music Three Man Band. Advance tickets can be purchased at SAMFA or at the door, at The Stables.

This new EnPleinAirTEXAS format was described, by a participant artist, as a time afforded them to observe, without the pressure from competition, which in turn allowed them to grow as artists.

Come join us this fall at the Painted Ranches Fellowship. For more information contact SAMFA at 325-653-3333 or https://samfa.org

Being An Awesome Long Distance Grandparent

Just because you live far away from your grandkids doesn’t mean that you can’t do things with them. We live in a fabulous world of technology where interacting with those Littles that live too far to just drive over can be a breeze! If you want to spend the afternoon with them. . .Do it!

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #1 – Become Penpals

Participate in two-way activities like becoming penpals, sending a continuous story back and forth, journaling, or just a series of questions you answer. They will love to get in on the fun. Maybe you can start sending pictures with a few words on them.

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #2 – Include Them Any Way You Can

Try to include your long-distance Littles in some of the big activities. One way is to Skype or Facetime during any activities. Grandparents and the kids will love this!

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #3 – Watch TV “Together”

You can watch a TV show “together” and then talk about it. That opens the door to share some excitement for upcoming episodes. . .more reasons to talk to each other! (This is a fun one especially as they get older).

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #4 – Play Puzzles & Word Games

Little ones love puzzles and word games. As long distance grandparents, you can play just like we do with the Littles that are close by. Ask for certain types of words and then read the silly story to them. Then we change roles. You could mail e other puzzles and then share in the joy of completing it. You will love to get mail from them as much as they will love to get you!!

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #5 – Read to Each Other

You can read to each other. You can show them picture books if you are on a video chat of some kind. Or you can read chapter books together. That gives you a reason to talk to each other often as you will both probably be excited to read the next chapter. A fun favorite book series – Kingdom Keepers. (If you’re Disney fans, you will LOVE this series. It’s a fictional series set in the Disney parks. Check it out and see for yourself!)

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #6 – Play the Story Game

The Story Game is where you start a story with 3-5 words. Then, your grandchild needs to continue the story with just 3-5 words. Then you continue the story with the next 3-5 words. This game can get hilarious when your grandchildren run it completely off the rails in a direction that you just didn’t anticipate. . .especially with the little ones!

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #7 – Cook & Eat a Meal Together

Agree ahead of time what they are cooking and get all the ingredients needed to make the meal. At the designated day and time, they gather on Skype or Facetime or Zoom. You each fix the meal and talk while you cook. Just because you are long distance grandparents doesn’t mean that you can’t have a meal together! This is a great way for parents or grandparents to hand down family recipes to those who don’t live close.

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #8 – Do Jigsaw Puzzles Online

Did you know you can do jigsaw puzzles together online? You can invite groups of people to join and do the puzzle. This might take

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #9 – Share Your Personal History

Share your personal history with your grandchildren one story at a time. This will be invaluable someday. As a matter of fact, it might be fun to put these stories into a video and put it on a private YouTube channel or burn onto a CD that you can share with your family. Let the kids ask you questions about your life growing up or when you were dating.

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #10 – Plant Something Together

Send your grandkids a small planting set – pot, seeds, soil, maybe some small tools, watering can, gloves, etc. You keep some of the same seeds. When they get the package, plan a time to video chat and plant the seeds while they do the same. Every week compare your plant’s growth and see how they are doing.

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #11 – Send “Open When” Letters

You can send your grandkids “open when” letters. Mark some milestones during the coming weeks or months and write a letter to your grandchild for each of those times. Send them all at once and have a specific open date (and/or time). You can call them after they open each letter and tell them how much you love them.

Long Distance Grandparent Activity #12 - Make time for the older kids too

Older kids are harder because they are so busy, but plan ways to stay in touch - even if its just texting with them. Or be brave and learn a new app or software! Or maybe ask them questions that are more technical - they might love to be able to teach YOU something.

Scouting: A Path to Success and Adventure for Youth

In today's fast-paced digital world, parents are constantly seeking opportunities to provide their children with experiences that foster growth, resilience, and valuable life skills. One such avenue that has stood the test of time and continues to be a beacon of development for youth is scouting. More than just knots and badges, scouting offers a plethora of benefits that shape young minds and prepare them for the challenges of the real world.

For parents, scouting is more than just a hobby for their children— it's an edge that sets them apart. It provides a safe environment where youth can be challenged, learn important skills, and forge lifelong friendships. In a world rife with anxiety and social pressures, scouting offers a sanctuary where children can explore, learn, and grow in a supportive community.

Scouting serves as a cure for anxiety by providing a structured yet adventurous outlet for children to channel their energy and focus. Through engaging activities and team-building exercises, scouts learn to step out of their comfort zones, confront challenges head-on, and develop the confidence to overcome obstacles both in and out of the scout troop.

The benefits to youth are many. In today’s environment, one of the most beneficial is offering an opportunity to be social without the crutch of social media. In an age where screen-time dominates interactions, scouting provides a refreshing avenue for unplugged socialization, where face-to-face communication, teamwork, and camaraderie take center stage.

Authentic fun and adventure are at the heart of scouting, as youth embark on exciting journeys, explore the great outdoors, and participate in activities that foster a sense of wonder and discovery. From camping under the stars to learning

survival skills, scouts are exposed to a world of possibilities that ignite their spirit of adventure and curiosity.

Scouting also empowers youth with autonomy and the opportunity to learn real-world skills that extend far beyond the confines of a classroom. From first aid training to leadership development, scouts are equipped with practical knowledge and experiences that prepare them for the challenges of adulthood.

Scouting offers the real experience of social problem-solving, where youth learn to navigate complex situations, communicate effectively, and collaborate with their peers to achieve common goals. Through hands-on projects, community service initiatives, and leadership opportunities, scouts develop invaluable problem-solving skills that serve them well in all areas of life.

Scouting remains a timeless institution that not only imparts practical skills and knowledge but also instills values of teamwork, leadership, and resilience in the youth of today. By providing a platform for authentic socialization, fun and adventure, and real-world skill development, scouting continues to be a transformative journey that shapes the minds and hearts of young scouts, preparing them for a future full of promise and opportunity.

The Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

Scout Law: A scout is “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”

The Texas Southwest Council of Scouting America invites your family to be a part of this growing organization, for all the reasons listed here. For more information, please visit www.tswcbsa.org or contact our Council office at 325-6557107 or Stacy McGuire at stacy.mcguire@scouting.org or call/text 325-374-5999

Need some ideas for kids, grandparents, neighbors, friends - yourself???? San Angleo has so much to offer...these are just a few of the great places to visit!

San Angelo State Park

San Angelo State Park offers a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities. The park offers camping sites, biking trails, and over 50 miles of trails for hiking or horseback riding. A small per-day entrance fee allows you to take advantage of all the park has to offer. You can fish at the park as well, even if you don’t have a license. If you’re fishing from the shore, you can enjoy a peaceful afternoon. The park even loans out the fishing gear if you’ve come unprepared. On your way out, make sure to stop by the Official Texas State Longhorn Herd, as well as paddocks full of bison. It’s a unique experience for any family!

San Angelo Riverwalk

The Riverwalk is a decidedly more urban outdoor environment. Here, you can shop downtown while strolling along the river. There are plenty of free gardens and parks for the whole family, as well as community fishing areas, an outdoor sculpture gallery, and an outdoor stage. It’s a great place to spend the afternoon. If you like to play golf, the Santa Fe Park golf course is an inexpensive way to get a few holes in. There’s also some great dining in the area, making it the perfect place to enjoy a spring or summer day.

Angelo State University Planetarium

Angelo State University (ASU) is home to a large Planetarium, complete with a large, tilted dome theatre and Sci-Dome HD projector. Here, you can see over 500 million stars and other celestial objects. The projection of these bodies is fascinating, and it’s sure to be a great trip for parents and children. Tickets are available when school is in session, and they are inexpensive. Look out for activities held by the Planetarium, as special shows sell out quickly. You can take your kids to the Planetarium as well, as it presents a great educational experience!

The Bosque Park

The Bosque Park is one of the largest parks in San Angelo. It’s more than just a public park. There are several games and activities here that require entry fees. During the summer season, you can expect to find volleyball, paddle boats, and all types of miniature golf. There are free activities as well – The Bosque is still a public park, and offers lots of shade, walking trails, and even giant chess. It’s a great place to hang out with the family.

Fort Concho

Fort Concho used to be a military fort – now, it’s a National Monument and interactive museum. Many of the older buildings have been renovated, and some have been furnished to look like they did in the 1800s, when the fort was active. There’s plenty for your kids to do, especially if they are bored of the other museums. It’s a fun, interactive history experience that the whole family will enjoy. The tours are self-guided, so you are free to tour at your own pace.

Kid’s Kingdom Park

San Angelo has a lot of great parks, and Kid’s Kingdom is one of the best! It’s completely free to the public. Here, you’ll find all the traditional park amenities, including large wooden playground equipment. There’s also a scenic river drive through the park, fishing areas, and walking trails. Located right across from the Visitor’s Center, it’s a great place for parents to relax while the kids play.

International Waterlily Collection

San Angelo, TX is home to the largest and most exclusive collection of water lilies in the world. Each year, the collection of waterlilies changes – which is necessary, because only a very small percentage of the collection can be displayed in the available space. The International Waterlily Collection is located at the Civic League Park in San Angelo, and it’s free to the public. You can tour ponds full of flowering lilies. It’s best to go between April and October. The waterlilies here flower during that time, creating multiple beautiful pools that the whole family can enjoy.

San Angelo Visitor’s Center

The San Angelo Visitor’s Center is a great place to learn about what you can do in San Angelo. It’s a beautiful building, complete with painted sheep, Riverwalk access, and a nearby art display. While inside, you can check out brochures for every other event and attraction in the surrounding area. They also offer complimentary coffee. If you aren’t local to the San Angelo area, the receptionist can help you get acquainted with what is available to you. They’re sure to have extensive knowledge of all types of events and activities, so make sure to ask them about the types of things you want to do.

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts

San Angelo’s museums are amazing, but the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is a jewel in the crown of this desert oasis. The museum houses a collection of ceramics, paintings, and sculptures from around the state. There is always an amazing exhibit or two happening. In addition to standard art, they have outdoor sculpture galleries and galleries specifically for glass art. It’s a great place to take the family. The National Award for Museum Service is one of the highest honors that a museum can receive. San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts received this award in 2003, along with numerous other awards from the state. It’s a great place to look at some art, educate your children, and look at dozens of unique pieces.

Railway and Heritage Museum of San Angelo

The Railway and Heritage Museum of San Angelo isn’t quite like any other Railway Museum in the US. It hosts a variety of events for different seasons, including Halloween and Christmas. It’s a great place to take the kids to these events, as it’s something they won’t see anywhere else. It’s the perfect place to take your kids who like trains. The museum is a solid experience for all ages, and it’s extremely educational for all. If you can, stop by when there’s a car show or a ‘Railway Day’ to get the most out of your visit.

Paintbrush Alley

Downtown San Angelo, Inc. and Art in Uncommon Places partner for an incredible new project- the revitalization of Paintbrush Alley. Nestled in the alleyway behind Firestone on W. Concho Ave. and Texas Theater on W. Twohig Ave., the outdoor gallery stretches along the back of several businesses. Bright murals and symbols of Texas culture encompass the alley’s theme of 1956 motion picture “Giant.”

Please stay hydrated while you are out enjoying San Angelo!
