As I write it is 24th October and the 24th day of the new computer system. If you are a regular reader of Sammie’s News you will be well aware that we have been planning the installation of a new computer system for many months and 1st October was the moment of truth.

On Sunday 30th September or was it Monday 1st October I left work at 15 minutes past midnight going home for a few hours’ sleep. Keen to avoid disaster when we opened next morning we left the computers on. On arriving at work just after 7am I was horrified to learn that for some reason the computers were not working and no-one could get logged onto the system!!! Panic took hold as we desperately tried to find out what the problem was and resolve It before the big moment. Come 8am our new EPOS tills were up and running but behind the scenes it would be another 30 minutes before all was well, the issue of a full back up server having being resolved, why it chose the day before we went live to develop an issue I will never know, sometimes fate just plays things that way.

everyone else that works at Sammie’s quickly found that whilst we knew what we had to do we no longer knew how to do it on the computers. Once we did discover how to do a normal task we found that it would take us at least three times as long as usual because the process has changed. My Grandfather Eric used to talk a lot about "improving things worse" whenever a new idea came along that made a simple process more complicated and I found myself repeating that phrase from time-to-time!

Now we are in week four things have settled down in the main and everyone is getting more comfortable with what they have to do, how they have to do it and we are starting to be able to see what some of the benefits of the new system will be in the future. One small improvement is that whilst we sell nails for example in kilos or a half-kilo we are now able to be a little more flexible in that we can sell in grams, so when someone asks for two handfuls of nails we can literally now do that and charge accordingly without having to make the weight up or down or get the calculator out and make a manual adjustment to the price. This does represent some kind of progress' it does not justify the sum

invested but it is a start.

In conclusion, installing a new computer system is a project I hope never to be involved with again, it was and still is very challenging and it will be some months before everything has settled down. I would like to say thank you to the small Sammie’s Team behind the scenes that made this project possible, they all work tremendously hard and did what was necessary to meet the deadline. I would also like to thank everyone that works at Sammie’s. On the whole everyone has embraced the new system or is doing their best to make it work and there has been very little complaining. One of the things that amazes me the most is how some of our more experienced members of staff have taken on the challenge of learning something new, I am impressed and inspired by their energy to tackle something new! Lastly, thank you so much to all our customers that have bared with us through this process and have put up with confusion and delay at the tills or on the phone. We are working hard to get ourselves organised and are sure that in the end the quality of our customer service will improve and in the meantime we thank you all for your patience.

'A real stunner, with its vividlycoloured violet'

The aptly-named beauty berry is a real stunner, with its vividlycoloured violet berries. From the lamiaceae family, which means it’s related to lavender and mint, it’s a beautiful plant all year round. Callicarpa ‘Profusion’ is a popular choice, as it fruits well on its own, whereas with some varieties, you really need several plants together to ensure good pollination and therefore plenty of berries. It also has striking bronzy-purple young leaves in spring, turning purple again in the autumn, as the berries ripen.

The berries will last well into winter, and wildlife will eat them, as they’re not poisonous.

However, they are very bitter, so beauty berry doesn’t become the plat du jour until all other options have been picked bare.

Prepare for snow and icy weather As much as I hate to say it, the cold weather is coming. Even at the end of October some of us up on higher ground woke up to a dusting of snow. Basically you never really know when it might arrive. That's why it is always useful to be prepared, even if its a only a 10 minute drive down the road. So here are some useful tips to help you through the winter weather challenges on the road.

First and foremost, prepare yourself. I know it can be hard to get out of bed on a dark morning but allow extra time. Try to get up earlier to allow time to de-ice the car and allow much longer for journeys.

Don't forget your coat, hat, gloves, sturdy boots and a blanket to keep you warm in case you do get stuck or have to leave your car. Always carry some food and a drink if you can, you don't want to be going hungry! A

shovel will always come in handy, take it from experience picking up rock salt with your bare hands is not great, especially when its frozen solid.

Prepare your car.

Although it can be an added cost, consider buying winter tyres, which offer extra grip, especially if you live in an area which regularly expriences snow.

Winter tyres can make a big difference, it could be the difference between leaving the driveway and not leaving the drive way.

However in very bad snow conditions avoid driving unless essential. Keep screenwash topped up and use a proper anti-freeze at the right concentration to prevent ice forming. Although this is probabaly an obvious one, always keep your fuel tank topped up - that way if you are caught out in the cold weather, you'll have enough fuel to make it home or run the engine to keep warm.

Remember to clear all snow and ice from the windscreen, windows and the roof of the car before driving off. Pieces

of ice ying from your car on the way to work can be very dangerous for other road users, they are even known to crack and break windscreens. Avoid using water to de-ice windscreens as hot water can crack the glass and cold water will only freeze again. De-icer sprays are brilliant, they remove frost from all types of glass effciently, with ultimate protection down to -15 degrees.

Ultimatelty just remember to keep safe on the roads, its better late than never! I can't speak for everyone, but it is nice to have a little bit of snow over Christmas. However ďŹ ngers crossed that the beast from the east doesn't make another appearance.

It’s that time of year once again where the days are getting wetter and colder and that can only mean that it’s time to get your winter boots out.

Perhaps last year's won’t last another winter or maybe you just deserve a treat, either way we have one of our best ranges of Ariat footwear to date. So, feel free to come and have a peruse of what we have to offer and get entered into our competition for trying any on!

Another new addition to the Ariat range this season is the Sutton (left) which we keep in Chocolate. A beautiful boot made from premium suede with dual stretch gore panels which allow for a wonderful fit to the leg.

A favourite from last year has returned – the Wythburn (right) in Java is back in stock.

This mid-height laced boot was a great seller last year and it’s not hard to see why!

With its faux fur lining, 200g thinsulate insulation, Waterproof Pro membrane and Ariat’s 4LR technology this boot will keep your feet warm, dry and comfy all day long.

Our competition prize, a pair of Wexfords, are a wonderful ankle boot that comes in either Java or Cordovan for women or Java for men. They combine style with practicality, with Ariat’s ATS technology for stability and comfort whilst being made from high quality leathers.

New to this season is the Alora Boot which we have stocked in Olive (right) and Cordovan (left).

This boot is simply stunning with a braided strap detail, a curved zip and a tassel at the back. Along with its stunning appearance it is also technically appealing featuring Ariat’s ATS technology for stability and allday comfort.

Another returner from last season is the Coniston in Chocolate (right).

This boot is wonderfully tall and the laced front allows for a perfect adjustment of fit to the leg and a rear zip means that the laces only have to be adjusted once. These boots also feature a Waterproof Pro membrane, thinsulate insulation, a stirrup friendly outsole and Ariat’s ATS technology for comfort and stability.

September Answer This wooden mallet is a saddlers leatherworking ‘Lignum Vitae Collar Mallet’ which was used to pack straw tightly into a horse collar before stitching over the leather. The saddler made sure the neck harness was comfortable for the working horse, as the harness distributed the load around a horse’s neck and shoulders when pulling a wagon or plough.
