Through the Chakra’s:

An Eight Week Exploration of Your Chakra Energy Chakras are said to be invisible wheel like forces of energy permeating the physical body and extending beyond it. The most common system consists of seven focal points for the reception and transmission of energies and the free flow of that energy is vital to health and well being. When we tune into the flow of energy in our body we can create ease and flow in our lives.

Join us at Attune Coaching as we undertake our personal development and healing through the lens of the chakras. Each week for seven weeks we will focus on one chakra by increasing our understanding of the chakras and exploring the psychological meanings associated with each. We will be implementing techniques of sound energy and essential oils and you will receive a crystal a week reflecting that chakra. The eighth week will be a final healing session that focuses on all the chakras.

Time:

Thursday evenings beginning September 22, 2011

The Andean Despacho:

Giving Back to the Universe, Giving Back to Ourselves

11/11/11

On November 11, 2011 in many places all over the world, people will be taking part in sacred ceremonies, connecting their hearts and souls to come into greater alignment with the Earth and Heavens. It is also a day to honor those who have defended freedom in the world and to set our sights toward peace. It is said that a new portal of awareness will open to us on this day. In honor of this, we invite you to join us as we take you through the beautiful process of creating an Andean Despacho, a gift of gratitude to the Universe and an opportunity to create peace, wellbeing, and harmony in our lives. Please join Marcia Goodman-Blair, M.A. of Soul Spirit Journey, a Shamanic Practitioner and Donna Ricci, Psy.D. of Attune Coaching as we demonstrate the process, and then, aided by guided imagery and sound healing, work together to create our despacho offering. Annual Report – Por Cristo

Por Cristo Project Report 2010 Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends of Por Cristo, We look back upon 2010 with a deep sense of gratitude for the commitment of all who contribute to our work in Ecuador. While the worldwide economic upheaval continues to have a negative impact on the ability of many nonprofit organizations to survive, our supporters have remained steadfast in their generosity. It is this generosity, and for this we thank you, that allows us to fulfill our mission: to live the Gospel by caring for the poor and healing the sick. From the skills of our staff and medical volunteers, to the expert advice of our board, to the financial strength provided by our donors, our gifts are many. In this report, we reflect upon how these gifts, the resources offered to us in service to the poor, drive our work. We review the efforts of the Por Cristo Nutrition and Health Center, which, while increasing the overall number of people served by 20 percent, also created an outreach strategy to reach an increased number of high-risk patients in the poorest areas. We highlight the 2010 trip of the Por Cristo Cardiac Team and how the team’s work contributed to improved quality of care at the Baca Ortiz Hospital for Children. And we update you on our work with the Santa Hildegarda Health Center in Jaime Roldos. The year 2010 brought with it some significant changes. We completed our four-year collaboration with the UNIVIDA (Spanish acronym for United Against HIV/AIDS) Project, designed to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS, particularly from mother to child. We were honored to be

network of community hospitals. While Steward Health Care is a for-profit organization, Por Cristo has always been—and remains—a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. The Por Cristo Board of Trustees provided great leadership in guiding Por Cristo through this important transition. We still have a home here at what was Caritas and is now Steward Health Care, benefitting from the same administrative support we have always enjoyed. As before, we raise and manage our own funds. And I am pleased to say the response of our donors has been completely positive. What has not changed is our commitment to our mission. With your help, we will continue to live the Gospel message, to seek out those most in need and to help improve the lives of our brothers and sisters in Ecuador.

recognized by the Archdiocese of Guayaquil for our work in that area and have incorporated most of the program’s components into our day-to-day activities. With our best wishes for a happy retirement, we said goodbye to Three generations who benefit from services Fr. Frank Smith, who, at the Por Cristo Nutrition and Health Center after many years of missionary work in Ecuador, returned to his native England. Fr. Frank was the person who asked Por Cristo to establish a yearround clinic. He is an inspiration, a selfless servant of the people. His positive impact on Isla Trinitaria will always be felt. We began a new chapter in Por Cristo’s history when Caritas Christi Health Care announced in March that it would be acquired by Cerberus Capital Management, a private equity firm. Through the acquisition, a new company, Steward Health Care, was created to provide world-class health care through its

Our Patients

Patients at the Por Cristo Nutrition and Health Center eive more than health-care services; they receive the help y need to balance many aspects of their lives. In addition to receiving medical care m the center, Rubi has had help from our social worker and chologist to manage the significant challenges of her life. staff provided guidance on labor laws to help Rubi cope h being exploited by her employers and, with the help of Frank Smith, arranged to have Rubi’s teenage son attend a dential treatment center to help prevent him from joining an an gang. extraordinary experience in international medical work. She oversees a talented and committed group of colleagues in Ecuador. Rounding out the Boston team, Orlando Vargas, Project Coordinator, is responsible for our efforts to acquire and ship donated equipment as well as for other administrative duties. Our staff of 16 working in Ecuador at the Nutrition and Health Center face tremendous challenges, dealing not only with the poverty around them but also with physical danger as they reach out to the poorest communities. Working among the poor is not for everyone. The poor often have complex social problems that go beyond basic health care. We are blessed to have people committed to making life better for those in need. Mother and baby boy at the Nutrition and Health Center

Our Staff

In 2010, the Por Cristo Nutrition and Health Center saw its total number of patients rise to 6,319, a 20 percent increase over 2009. The number of patient visits rose to 19,500, a 3.5 percent increase. Of the new 2010 patients, 20 percent are categorized as high risk. There was also a six percent increase of patients from the poorest areas. This was the result of a community outreach strategy designed to connect with patients and introduce them to both our medical services as well as our array of preventive health services. The approach included running health fairs, conducting on-site screenings, partnering with community members to reach those from the poorest neighborhoods least likely to come to the center, and connecting through our school dental-health and girls self-esteem programs. We were thrilled to learn from our 2010 patientsatisfaction surveys that 98 percent of patients surveyed said that they would return, and refer others, to our nutrition and health center for services. Through local cost recovery (modest contributions patients make toward services), we generated $41,397.

Highlights of community outreach include:

Our staff, both in Boston and in Ecuador, are a seasoned up. Joe Reardon, Executive Director, has overseen the organization for the past 15 years. In 2010 we increased the number of schools from six to seven and the number of children to 2,086, a 12 percent rise over the previous year; • Girls Self-Esteem Initiative: Ninety-five girls in grades seven and eight participated. We also led two additional workshops outside of the formal school network, which are designed to reach adolescent girls who have dropped out of school; • UNIVIDA Project: Completed this fouryear HIV/AIDS program and incorporated the program components into the center’s daily activities. Conducted two health fairs, providing free HIV testing to 788 people. Conducted 116 home visits and reached more than 800 people with prevention messages.

Thank You, Fr. Frank

It is difficult to imagine Guayaquil without Fr. Frank Smith. After spending 50 years as a priest, 29 of them as a missionary in Ecuador, Fr. Frank has returned to his home Fr. Frank. country of England to retire at the Herbert House of the Mill Hill Missionaries. His presence, however, is still felt in Ecuador, and his heart remains there. “The Ecuadorians are very friendly and very grateful for what you do for them,” he said. “I am so grateful to God and to the Mill Hill Missionaries for my experience in Guayaquil.” Fr. Frank was assigned to Ecuador in 1975, where he worked with Jospice International, an organization founded by a Mill Hill Missionary that constructs clinics for the poor. Jospice built a clinic in Suburbio, a slum with a population of 400,000. Fr. Frank worked with Jospice in Ecuador until 1985, when he was assigned to the United States to help fundraise for the missions of the world. However, it wasn’t long before he was back in Ecuador. He returned in 1991 to continue his work with the poor of Guayaquil, specifically the Isla Trinitaria, and he remained until his retirement in 2010. From his previous time in Ecuador, Fr. Frank knew about Por Cristo and the medical teams that came each year, but he had another suggestion as to how the organization could make a difference. Having seen the impact malnutrition was having on the people in Guayaquil, Fr. Frank invited Por Cristo, to consider tackling the issue. The nutrition project evolved into what is now the Por Cristo Nutrition and Health Center, a full-fledged outpatient clinic in Isla Trinitaria. “It is the most successful nutrition project I have seen in South America,” Fr. Frank said. Fr. Frank recently spoke of his association with Por Cristo, saying that the work the organization does is important because it is the fulfillment of the Gospel message: love your neighbor as yourself. “I am very proud of being a friend of Por Cristo,” he said. We at Por Cristo want to express our greatest appreciation for the work Fr. Frank has done. We are all better for having worked with him.

About our Medical Volunteers

Por Cristo’s medical volunteers, who are experts in their clinical areas, choose to leave their own hospitals using vacation time and go to Ecuador to give of their time and expertise. Two of those volunteers are Dr. Robert Geggel, Pediatric Cardiologist at Children Hospital Boston, and Dot Beke, Clinical Nurse Specialis in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Children’s. “These days, for the vast majority of congenital cardiac conditions, we can provide significant help,” Dr. Geggel said. Together with their Ecuadorian counterparts, members of the team evaluate patients; perform echocardiograms, cardiac catheterizations, and cardiac surgery; and provide training to both physicians and nurses, including training in post-operative management in the newly created cardiac intensive-care unit. The team also brings a large supply of medical equipment annually for use in all aspects of this work. “The physicians in Ecuador are excellent,” Dr. Geggel said. “Their challeng is that the system doesn’t give them the resources they need, and so they haven’t had ready access to the equipment we have in the United States.” According to Dot Beke, the collegial relationships have played a significant role in the work through the years. “Central to our mission is the collaboration with o Ecuadorian colleagues,” she said. “Teamwork, mentoring and building sustaining relationships are critical factors i the long-term success of our work in Ecuador.” Ultimately, for Dr. Geggel, this is about social justice. “We travel to Ecuador to provide assistance to ou medical colleagues and to improve the care of children with congenital heart disease. This is our attempt to repair the world’s inequalities.” Por Cristo congratulates Dot Beke, RN, MS CPNP-PC/AC, who was honored with the national 2010 Nursing Spectrum Excellence Award for Clinical Care. Update Pediatric Cardiac Care Program, Baca Ortiz Hospital for Children

One of Por Cristo’s significant accomplishments of 2010 was the strengthening of the cardiac program at Baca Ortiz Hospital for Children. In December 2009, the hospital had opened a new cardiac unit with state-of-the-art equipment, incorporating some design recommendations and protocols provided by the Por Cristo Cardiac Team. The hospital hired new nurses and doctors for the unit. Marisa Mize, DNP, a long-time Por Cristo volunteer, spent two weeks on site mentoring new cardiothoracic intensive care unit registered nurses and residents. The Por Cristo Cardiac Team made its annual trip to the Baca Ortiz Hospital for Children October 1–9, 2010. In addition to working with the Ecuadorian team on echocardiograms, hybrid cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterizations, the Por Cristo volunteers provided five days of critical-care nursing lectures and skills workshops. One of the highlights of the trip was the undertaking of the first transesophageal echocardiogram ever performed there. This test allows the doctor to view the heart by sending a tube down the throat, thereby obtaining an image not obscured by the ribs or lungs. Contributions of the 2010 Cardiac Team visit included: • Training: Facilitated five days of critical-care nursing lectures and skills workshops; • Surgery: Performed hybrid cardiac surgery procedure with echocardiogram and catheterization; • Testing: Conducted 72 echocardiograms and six cardiac catheterizations; • Materials and supplies: Shared a significant amount of clinical reference materials and brought donated medical supplies valued at over $100,000; • Follow-up: Maintained ongoing contact among U.S. staff and volunteers and Baca Ortiz staff. A Relationship Steeped in Respect

All of our work in Ecuador is collaborative. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the relationship of mutual respect between Por Cristo and our Ecuadorian counterparts. Two of those counterparts are Sr. Concettina Lochi, Director of the Santa Hildegarda Health Center in Jaime Roldos, and Dr. Lucia Gordillo, Pediatric Cardiologist at the Baca Ortiz Hospital for Children in Quito.

Supporters at Home—

Why I’m Involved With Por Cristo

Without resources, our work in Ecuador would not be possible. Por Cristo is blessed with supporters who see the need we are trying to fill; who have committed themselves to our mission; and who give of their time, talent and treasure to make life for the poorest of the poor better. Our donors come from all walks of life, and they are critical to our success. Regardless of the size of the donation they make, their presence is felt in every area of our work. We have a talented board made up of leaders in the fields of medicine, business and education. Our board members not only advise us on policy, they also are invaluable ambassadors for Por Cristo. Why do our supporters give of themselves to help Por Cristo? There are as many different answers as there are donors. Here is a sampling:

Dear Friends and Family of Youk’s Kids, Thank you all for joining us for this spectacular event. It is great to have old friends back and to welcome new friends as we work together to support children and the organizations who are caring for them. Youk’s Kids had a successful year and we could not have done this without your generosity and we are grateful for your support as we work to “bridge the gap” for the children we serve. Our Athletes for Heroes program, the seed money for which was raised at last year’s Idol, is clearly defined and we have begun providing grants to the children of fallen or severely injured military personnel, firefighters and police officers. Through fundraising efforts in Kevin’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio we have been able to fund another year of a full-time Child Life Specialist. These surrogates fill the gap that is left when the parents of a critically-ill child cannot be at the hospital by providing therapeutic play and comfort. At the Italian Home for Children, our $100,000 grant continues the success of the C.R.I.S.S. program which bridges the gap by providing 3 months of outreach services to children as they leave the home and reintegrate into the community.

As the Board of Directors we are all very proud to be a part of this organization and its philanthropic endeavors. Our goal for the year ahead is to focus on “Bridging the Gap” for the children supported by Youk’s Kids. Currently, we are working on a Youk’s Kids Camp which we hope to open in the summer of 2013. This is an exciting concept for us, one that has the potential to bring members of each of our areas of support together and involve children nationwide. As we set our sights on another successful year, we ask you to look into your hearts and reach into your wallets. Together, we can “Bridge the Gap” for children nationwide….one hit at a time. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Youk’s Kids we thank all of you and hope that you have an enjoyable evening. Tina Cantu Co-VP/Board of Directors
