Monique Slater ON THE COVER

Running your own business requires dedication, discipline and passion. Which is most important to you?

It is definitely discipline! Discipline is the inner commitment to stick to what you’ve set out to do, even when it’s difficult or you don’t feel like it. Discipline keeps me consistent and moving forward even when motivation fades and it’s what turns dedication and passion into real results.

How did you get started in this business?

I’m in real estate because I believe homeownership is still one of the clearest paths to the American dream—and everybody deserves a real shot at it.

I don’t just help people buy or sell houses. I help them break generational curses and make a life move with confidence. I love helping families understand how real estate can be a tool—not just a transaction.

This work is about leaving and inheritance and building generational wealth. It’s about showing people how to use homeownership to build stability, create options, and change what’s possible for their children’s children. I’m in this business to educate, advocate, and open doors—especially for people who’ve been told “not yet” or “you can’t.”

Why are you in this type of business?

I currently own 17 properties to include one in the city of Porta Plata in the Dominican Republic and building a penthouse in Punta Cana, DR. I’m also part owner of Qulture nightclub here in San Antonio.

What is your background, Education, Work Experience?

I have a very rich but unique background. I was raised in Compton, CA when my mother and sister experienced being homeless twice. I hustled my way out of that situation and became part of the California Forestry Dept, fighting wildland fires in the hills of San Bernardino, CA. I eventually joined the Air Force to escape the fast-paced life of Los Angeles and to get an education. I built an impressive 28-year career in the Air Force, reaching the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and earning a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and an Associate’s degree in Fire Science. After retiring in 2018,

I transitioned into real estate full-time, becoming a top producer in San Antonio. Now, I own the Black Label Realty Group and part owner of a nightclub but my passion is on serving and educating other on financial literacy and building wealth through real estate. How long have you been in business?

I started investing in real estate at the age of 23 years old but became a licensed agent in 2018 after retiring from the military.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with?, if so, How do you overcome these ethical problems?

Unfortunately, yes, there are systemic biases...like appraisals undervaluing blackowned properties or unequal access to networks. I overcome these by leading with integrity, educating myself and others, and championing fair treatment. By excelling at my work, mentoring others, and insisting on fairness in every transaction, I contribute to the solution.

What is your management style?

I have a very strong management style blending structure with care. I believe in setting clear expectations, whether through standard operating procedures or defined goals but with a personal touch. My background as a mentor, veteran and community leader means I foster trust, empowerment, and growth in my team. I’m hands on when

needed, but I aim to equip others to suc ceed independently, always grounded in values like integrity and excellence.

Why is it important to you personally to succeed?

I’m the first in my family in a lot of areas. Success isn’t just about achievement, it’s about living out my values and ensuring my entire family is taken care of. I’ve dedicated myself to helping others, both in service and in business, and my personal success allows me to give freely when people are in need. My success allots me the ability to support my family and church, uplift my community, and inspire others to do the same. It’s a reflecting of the legacy I want to leave behind.

What do you see the future holds for your type of business?

I think my future is likely to be filled with continued growth and impact. With my drive, I hope to keep expanding my reach into the financial literacy arena, educating more families and pursuing new ventures that align with my values. I’ll keep trying to find new ways to blend my entrepreneurial spirit with my passion for service. In regard to real estate, it will always evolve with the times. Tech and AI will play huge roles in my virtual experience and streamlined processes.

At the same time, local expertise and personal connections will remain invaluable so I’m not worried about being replaced by AI, just enhanced.

Is there anything in particular your looking to accomplish with your career?

Right now, I’m loving what I’m doing and enjoying the ride. Being a top producer no longer feeds my soul, I now measure success by the families I empower, the agents I mentor and the communities I make a difference in. I’m striving to educate more people on wealth-building and leaving a legacy fo helping others break barriers.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

Do you know who your competitors are?

Definitely through trial and error. I read many books on investing but the true knowledge comes from applied principles, and sometimes that cost me dearly. Failures are just lessons of life that I’ve learned to embrace but not dwell on too long. Learn the lesson and then move on. How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

The impact of these environments on real estate is broad but interconnected. We’re currently seeing the impact in all these areas especially political, technological and economic environments. All these factors intertwine to shape the real estate landscape, making it dynamic and responsive to change across multiple domains.

I honestly think my greatest competitor is myself. I can’t get out of my own mind sometimes. I’m always striving to outdo my own previous achievement, pushing myself to grow and improve every day.....but why? I would have never thought I would be where I am now and I’m so grateful.

How are people aware of your business?

This is an area where I really need to improve. I need to hire a content creator but right now, I get all of my business from word of mouth, past clients’ testimonials, and amazing referral partners.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

I actually see my brand expanding, expanding my client base and definitely refining my systems. In the next 5 years, I see myself as the agent for all Veterans because of my VA loan expertise but I also she myself extremely successful in the luxury market. I also want to mentor new agents and creating impactful educational programs. In 10 years, I definitely envision myself as a well-established industry leader, known for excellence and commitment. I’ll have a robust and reputable brand, expanded into multiple markets, and creating a legacy of empowering clients and agents.

Whom do you seek advice from for your type of business?

I seek advice from mega agents in my office, business owners in my community, my peers, and amazing referral partners across the nation. I love being in the room like a fly on the wall—listening, learning, and gathering wisdom from people who’ve done it before me. Because if I’m the smartest person in the room, it’s time to change my environment.

Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason that this business exists?

Yes, here’s the mission statement: Black Label Realty’s mission is to prioritize people over profits, deliver exceptional service over commissions and foster meaningful relationships. “ Our reputation proceeds us!”

Customers often choose me over competitors because of my unique blend of experience, commitment, and personalized service. My military background and understanding of VA loans provide a specialized level of expertise that resonates deeply with service members and their families. Additionally, my dedication to putting people first, maintaining integrity, and building lasting relationships ensures that clients feel valued and supported throughout their real estate journey.

What are your greatest achievements and significant milestones to date (please provide a timeline if possible)?

When I reflect on my greatest accomplishment, it’s the blessing of giving life to my boys, London and Miles. And it’s also the gift of life I was able to extend two years ago by donating a kidney to my Bishop (David Michael Copeland).

Both are a testament to who I am at my core—service, compassion, and a heart to give. Those values have led me my entire life, and they still guide everything I do today.

Right now the greatest challenge is working

Dr. Shwanda Ifeoma Onwuachi

Running your own business requires dedication, discipline and passion. Which is most important to you?

Dedication. I am in the business of bettering the lives of children, and that work requires more than skill; it requires a calling. It takes a heart rooted in love, patience, and purpose. This is not simply a profession; it is a God-given assignment.

How did you get started in this business?

I started this business with my daughter, who is autistic and began playing the piano at just five years old. One day, I watched her naturally teach a student during a lesson, and in that moment, I knew this was bigger than music. I believe the Lord placed this calling on both of our hearts to serve children who are neurodivergent and whose parents desire an inclusive, patient, and affirming approach to piano instruction.

This business was born out of love, faith, and a deep belief that every child deserves access to music in a way that honors how they learn and express themselves.

Why are you in this type of business?

I circle back to the calling behind Precious Piano. My daughter, the CEO and founder, and I the Curriculum Designer and Writer, started this business because of her lived experience. We remember the moments when she would stim during piano lessons,

and her private instructor did not understand why that process was necessary for her learning.

Instead of seeing difference as a barrier, we saw purpose. We asked ourselves: Why not offer piano lessons to children who see the world differently every day?

Precious Piano was born from that calling to create a space where neurodivergent children are not asked to suppress who they are, but are supported as they learn, grow, and express themselves through music.

What is your background, Education, Work Experience?

I have nearly 30 years of experience in education, 28 years to be exact. I earned my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University and my Doctoral degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment from Walden University.

Throughout my career, I have served as a classroom teacher, curriculum lead, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Director of Curriculum. My experience spans the full continuum of learners, from typically developing children to students with diverse learning differences.

My proudest professional and personal accomplishment is the 11 years my husband and I spent homeschooling our daughter, the CEO of Precious Piano Music School. That experience deepened my understanding of individualized instruction, neurodivergent learning, and the power of honoring a child’s unique process.

How long have you been in business?

This is our first year in business.

How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business?

Technology plays a significant role in how we conduct business. We use technology to advertise our services, provide mini piano lessons through our YouTube channel, and maintain consistent communication with parents through digital platforms. These tools allow us to extend learning beyond in-person instruction, strengthen family engagement, and ensure accessibility for the families we serve.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with?, if so, How do you overcome these ethical problems?

Equitable services are an ethical priority for us. We are committed to ensuring that all of our clients receive the equitable support they deserve. There is a clear distinction between equality and equity.

Providing piano lessons to all students represents equality. Ensuring equity, however, requires a deeper level of intentionality. At Precious Piano Music School, parents complete a questionnaire that allows us to better understand each child’s specific learning style and learning differences. This information guides our instructional approach so that lessons are tailored to meet the unique needs of every child.

What is your management style?

My management style is collaborative. From the beginning to the end of any process, decisions are made together with shared input and mutual buy-in. I believe collaboration fosters trust, accountability, and a strong sense of ownership among all stakeholders.

Why is it important to you personally to succeed?

This may sound bold, but I truly believe that with the Lord guiding this work, failure is not an option. Our success is not rooted in personal gain, but in the belief that the cause is greater than the means.

What do you see the future holds for your type of business?

The future of Precious Piano Music School is rooted in purpose and possibility. We aim to reach more neurodivergent children with lessons that honor their unique learning styles, blending in-person and virtual instruction. Our inclusive, sensory-aware curriculum will grow, while parents remain active partners in their child’s musical journey. With technology, community connections, and the guidance of our young CEO, we strive to inspire, empower, and redefine music education for children who experience the world differently.

Is there anything in particular your looking to accomplish with your career?

Help as many children as possible. What type of business form do you have, sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation?

LLC

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

I earned my doctoral degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and worked in education for for 28 years.

The success of Precious Piano Music School is shaped by many external factors. Social

awareness of neurodiversity drives demand for inclusive lessons, while economic conditions affect families’ ability to invest in music education. Safe, sensory-friendly spaces and virtual learning options address environmental needs. Technology allows us to expand reach, enhance instruction, and stay connected with parents. Legal requirements around education, child safety, and privacy ensure ethical practice, and political policies on special education and homeschooling influence how we operate. By understanding these factors, we can adapt and continue serving children who learn differently.

Do you know who your competitors are?

Precious Piano Music School faces competition from traditional music schools, private instructors, homeschool co-ops, community programs, and online platforms like Simply Piano or Yousician. Most offer standard lessons but few specialize in neurodivergent learners or provide equity-focused, individualized instruction.

How are people aware of your business?

Through word of mouth and referrals as well as those who share our posts on social media.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

Growing and expanding to as many children as possible.

Anjanette Allwood

We can change the world by first changing our view.

How did you get started in this business?

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with people from many different walks of life, and those experiences opened my eyes to just how great the need for mental health support truly is. I saw individuals carrying stress, grief, and trauma silently, often without the tools or support they deserved. That awareness stayed with me and ultimately led me to pursue clinical mental health counseling. This work allows me to walk alongside people as they find clarity, strength, and healing.

How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business?

Technology has made mental health care more accessible and flexible than ever before. Telehealth has allowed clients to receive support in ways that fit their lives, especially those facing health, transportation, or scheduling barriers. Digital tools also help with organization, documentation, and staying connected with current research and training. When used responsibly, technology enhances care while still preserving the personal connection that counseling requires.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with? If so, how do you overcome these ethical problems?

Ethics is at the heart of mental health counseling, particularly when it comes to confidentiality, boundaries, and client trust. Counselors must also be mindful of cultural sensitivity and the ethical use of technology. These concerns are addressed through clear communication, informed consent, and strict adherence to professional ethical standards. Ongoing supervision and consultation help ensure that ethical decisions are thoughtful and client centered.

personally. I continue to learn through training, reflection, and experience.

How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

The work of mental health counseling is closely tied to what’s happening in the world around us. Social and economic pressures, changes in healthcare access, and community stressors often shape what clients bring into sessions. Technology continues to influence how care is delivered, while laws and policies guide ethical and professional practice. Being aware of these factors helps me respond with compassion, flexibility, and responsibility.

What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

The most rewarding part of my work is seeing people grow into healthier, more confident versions of themselves. It’s an honor to be trusted with someone’s story and to support them during vulnerable moments. Even small steps forward can make a lasting difference. Knowing that I can help create space for healing and hope makes this work deeply meaningful.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

My foundation was built through graduate education, hands-on clinical training, and supervised field experiences. Classroom learning gave me the theory and structure, while practicum and internship placements taught me how to truly connect with people in real situations. Supervision played a key role in helping me grow professionally and

Who has been your greatest inspiration? (Please use my previous response) What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career?

The most rewarding part of my work is seeing people grow into healthier, more confident versions of themselves. It’s an honor to be trusted with someone’s story and to support them during vulnerable moments. Even small steps forward can make a lasting difference. Knowing that I can help create space for healing and hope makes this work deeply meaningful.

How do you define success?

I define success by the desire to obtain knowledge that surpasses any academic degree. In addition to that it would be the ability to walk in emotional/mental freedom, without being bound by what the majority of the world deems “successful.” There comes a sense of peace, knowing that my success is not defined by martial things I own. What’s important is how I feel on the inside... and honestly, I feel GREAT!

In your line of business, what motivates you?

“ I’m deeply motivated by other women in media spaces. Their drive, achievement (s), and will to carry such responsibilities in their capacities is truly inspiring. I’m motivated by the desire to be innovative in any environment. Knowing that I can achieve the most daring and bold investment in myself, gives me more fuel to execute the unthinkable.”

What would you say are the top three skills anyone should have in business?

“I believe it’s critical for a person to possess Communication, Critical-Thinking Skills, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, and Adaptability. Communication is used as a conduit where decisions are made and relationships and forged. It’s critical for internal team collaboration as well as external stakeholder engagement. Critical Thinking is

important for making sound decisions based on logic and evidence, rather on intuition alone. While numerous skill sets are valid, these skills are transferable across roles and industries, making them invaluable investments for long-term career growth and organizational prosperity. Which will allow anyone to thrive!

What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

“As a woman in the media space. (voice over artist/podcaster) It makes me happy that I am able to bring a client’s vision to life with my voice. Whether it’s a commercial ad, or narration for audio books. My gift has a way of drawing in the community. Knowing that I can help tell a story, makes me proud.”

How did you get started in this business?

“I got my first initial start in radio broadcasting at 15yrs old while volunteering my time on a local radio station’s “Street Team” (Carson Communication Station 104.5FM; 2003). The team and I promoted concerts, and other community events. It was clear

to say that I was “bit” by the radio bug. After just a few months of dedication, I was offered an opportunity that would change any teenager’s life and that was to host my very own radio show! I continued radio all throughout high school, then pursued my Communication Degree at Fayetteville State University, in Fayetteville, NC. I even hosted a radio segment on my college campus, then continued my journey on-air as the Midday Host, which is prime time in that industry.

Radio taught me the skill of smooth transition, how to think quickly on my feet, which allowed me to be creative on air. I feel in love.”

What three pieces of advice would you give others in your line of business today?

“Myles Monroe Jr. Once said. “All you have in all you need.” Believe in what you carry. Learn the art of communication and put yourself in the rooms that you never thought were possible. Because there is always an opportunity that awaits you.”

What would you like your business legacy to be?

To be known as a trusted Black-owned business that built financial stability, safety, and opportunity for the community.

David Anderson Jr

Running your own business requires dedication, discipline and passion. Which is most important to you?

Running your own business requires dedication, discipline, and passion, but the most important of the three is dedication. Passion may spark the idea, and discipline helps maintain daily consistency, but dedication is what keeps you going when challenges arise, motivation fades, or progress feels slow. It’s the long-term commitment to the vision and mission that pushes an entrepreneur to persevere through setbacks, adapt to obstacles, and continue showing up even when quitting feels easier.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with? if so, How do you overcome these ethical problems?

Yes, a community focused health and wellness organization must address several ethical concerns, including transparency in funding, equitable access to services, data privacy, and avoiding the exploitation of vulnerable populations. These concerns are overcome by operating with full transparency in finances and partnerships, ensuring services and events are accessible to all regardless of income or background, protecting personal and health information, and making decisions that prioritize community well-being over profit or recognition. Establishing clear ethical guidelines, maintaining

accountability, and actively listening to community feedback help ensure the organization stays aligned with its mission and operates with integrity.

Is there anything in particular your looking to accomplish with your career?

With my career, I am focused on creating long-term, meaningful impact by building organizations and initiatives that improve health, wellness, and economic opportunity in underserved communities. I aim to grow sustainable programs, create jobs, and develop strong community partnerships while serving as a leader and connector who helps others access resources, support, and opportunities. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a lasting legacy of empowerment, equity, and positive change.

How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

The social, economic, environmental, technological, legal, and political environments all play a significant role in shaping how my business operates and grows. Social factors influence community needs, participation, and trust, which directly affect engagement and program success. Economic conditions impact funding, sponsorships, and the ability of community members to access services. Environmental considerations affect event planning, outdoor activities, and sustainability practices. Technological factors support communication, marketing, data management, and virtual outreach, making operations more efficient and accessible. Legal requirements guide compliance related to nonprofit operations, insurance, safety, and data protection. Political environments influence public health priorities, grant availability, and partnerships with local agencies, all of which can either create opportunities or present challenges for the organization.

Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason that this business exists?

Yes, the business has a clear mission statement that explains why it exists. The mission is to promote health, wellness, and equity by creating inclusive programs, events, and partnerships that empower individuals and strengthen communities. The organization exists to reduce barriers to resources, education, and opportunities while fostering a culture of support, connection, and longterm positive impact.

What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

The greatest challenges in my job include securing consistent funding and resources, balancing multiple responsibilities, and meeting the diverse needs of the community. Managing time and avoiding burnout while coordinating events, partnerships, and operations can be demanding. Additionally, navigating administrative requirements, maintaining accountability, and ensuring long-term sustainability while staying true to the organization’s mission are ongoing challenges.

How do you define success?

I define success as creating meaningful, lasting impact while staying true to my values and purpose. Success is measured by the positive changes made in people’s lives, the strength of the community built, and the sustainability of the work overtime not just financial growth. It also means personal growth, integrity in leadership, and leaving a legacy that continues to uplift and empower others.

What would you like your business legacy to be?

I would like my business legacy to be one of empowerment, equity, and lasting community impact. I want it to be remembered for breaking down barriers to health, wellness, and opportunity, creating safe and inclusive spaces, and building strong partnerships that uplift underserved communities. Most importantly, I hope the legacy reflects a model of leadership rooted in integrity, service, and sustainable change that continues to benefit future generations.

Dr. Laverne Witherspoon

Running your own business requires dedication, discipline and passion. Which is most important to you?

For me, discipline is the most important. Passion may light the fire , and dedication keeps you showing up—but discipline is what carries you on the days when passion is quiet and motivation is tired. Discipline builds consistency, systems, and follow-through… and consistency is what turns vision into revenue.

That said, they work like a trio:

•Passion gives you purpose and vision

•Dedication keeps you committed to the long game

•Discipline turns ideas into results, daily

If I had to rank them:

1-Discipline

2-Dedication

3-Passion

But honestly? The magic happens when discipline protects your passion and dedication guards your vision.

Why are you in this type of business?

Because fashion is language—and I love helping people speak it boldly.

I’m in the fashion space because what you wear can say who you are, what you’ve survived, and where you’re going before you

ever open your mouth. It’s confidence. It’s storytelling. It’s identity in motion.

Fashion lets me:

•Turn vision into visibility

•Help people own the room without asking permission

•Blend purpose, power, and presence into one look

And honestly? Fashion is where faith, leadership, and self-worth get to show up out loud. When someone puts on an outfit and stands taller—that’s transformation, not just style.

What is your background, Education, Work Experience?

I am a retired Military Officer with 28 years of distinguished service, bringing extensive leadership experience across organizational, operational, and humanitarian environments.

•Three Doctorates, with a concentration in:

- Organizational Leadership

- Leadership Studies

Professional Expertise:

•Strategic & Organizational Leadership

•Executive & Ethical Leadership Development

•Humanitarian Service & Community Impact

•Mentorship and Transformation Leadership

My career reflects a lifelong commitment to service, leadership excellence, and empowering people and organizations to thrive.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with?, if so, How do you overcome these ethical problems?

An ethical fashion business overcomes challenges by choosing values over shortcuts:

-People before profit

-Quality over quantity

-Transparency over hype

-Respect over exploitation

Ethical fashion isn’t about being perfect— it’s about being intentional, accountable, and willing to do better. Overcoming ethical problems takes

•Collaborating with designers and artisans from those cultures

•Credit and compensate communities properly

•Learn the history before using symbols or styles

•Ask: Who benefits from this design?

Respect is always in style.

What do you see the future holds for your type of business?

The future of my kind of fashion business is

bold, personal, faith-infused, tech-enabled, and legacy-focused.

The future belongs to brands that serve:

•Leaders

•Creatives

•Women of faith

•Entrepreneurs

•Executives and “boss ladies” building legacy

Small, powerful audiences > chasing everyone.

What are your greatest achievements and significant milestones to date (please provide a timeline if possible)

Greatest Achievements & Significant Milestones (Timeline)

Early Foundation

Gift of Freehand Design (No Patterns)

From the beginning of my journey, I demonstrated a rare, God-given ability to design garments freehand—without the use of traditional patterns. This skill set me apart early on and allowed me to create original, intuitive designs driven by vision, structure, and movement rather than templates.

Growth as a Designer

International, Inclusive Design Philosophy

I established my design identity by creating for all body types, cultures, and people, with an intentional focus on inclusivity. My work reflects a global perspective, embracing diversity in form, function, and expression, and allowing individuals to see themselves represented through fashion.

Industry Recognition

Runway Appearances (Including Runway 7)

My designs have been showcased on recognized platforms such as Runway 7, marking a significant milestone in my professional career. These appearances validated my creative voice and positioned my work within respected fashion spaces alongside other emerging and established designers.

Professional Identity

Designer-After-Designer Recognition

I have earned recognition as a designer sought after by other designers—acknowledged not only for finished garments but for conceptual strength, craftsmanship, and the

ability to translate vision directly into wearable art.

How do you define success?

To me, success is alignment.

It’s when who you are, what you value, and what you’re doing all line up—and you’re at peace with the life you’re building.

Not just the trophies, titles, or bank account (those can be part of it), but things like:

•Waking up without dread

•Using your gifts instead of burying them

•Impacting people in a way that outlives applause

•Growing, even after setbacks

•Having joy and purpose, not one at the expense of the other

Success looks different in different seasons. Sometimes it’s winning loudly. Sometimes it’s surviving quietly. Both count.

And honestly?

If you can look at your life and say, “I’m becoming who I was meant to be”—that’s success.

What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career?

Watching my children NeCole , Romeshia, Lakisha Royal, Jerome , Damien, Ciera and Eric run the business and I call that legacy passed down.

Prior to teaching in higher education, Dr. Scott served over 16 years in the K-12 sector as a secondary teacher, coach, school counselor, district-level curriculum specialist for the Social Studies Department, and administrator in San Antonio ISD, a district in which he is an alumnus.

Dr. Scott is also the Executive Director of the Community for Life Foundation, which has provided close to a million dollars in scholarships to eligible college students nationally. Due to his passion to create and sustain optimal educational opportunities for all students, Dr. Scott founded S.E.N.D. Consulting, which specializes in training educators, counselors, administrators, parents, community leaders and stakeholders on “best practices” to reach all students, at various levels. He has provided leadership and community outreach trainings for many universities, school districts, churches and even organizations such as Educational Testing Services (ETS), Teach for America, SA Youth, Catholic Charities, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the NBA Team San Antonio Spurs Sports and Enter-

tainment staff. He also led a nationwide advisory team of experts that advised the Texas State Board of Education in the passage and implementation of the African American Studies Course curriculum for high school credit in Texas. He has also served on the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee for the City of San Antonio. He was also a member of the Community Resource Group (CRG) that advised some of the fortune 500 CEOs of San Antonio on equity in education, economic development, and safety and justice. Task force was created by Mr. R.C. Buford, the CEO of the San Antonio Spurs (2021). The initial investment of the CRG was 13 Million dollars to varying community and equity-based initiatives. He was awarded the San Antonio Spurs Black Heritage Award during a San Antonio Spurs game, which featured him and the other awardees on NBA.com.

He was recently featured on several Sinclair Broadcasting national townhalls regarding culturally responsive curricula, educational equity, as well as school leadership and safety, that involved state and national policymakers such as former U.S. HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson, former senior official in the U.S. Department of Justice,

Ian Prior, former Spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Education Angela Morbito, Armstrong Williams, and Texas State Senator Roland Martinez. He was also featured as an expert contributor on school safety on WAVY News 10 in Virginia, as well as Spectrum News Show, Capital Tonight.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree from St.

Mary’s University in Political Science, History, and Education. He has a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling from the University of Texas in San Antonio, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership with a focus in Educational Leadership from the University of the Incarnate Word. His research interest includes non-cognitive factors influencing academic success of

underrepresented populations, leadership development, and urban school and community relations. He lives in San Antonio, Texas with his wife Melissa, and their children Alexia, Gabriella, Christian, Alyssa, and Alessandra.

Why are you in the educational leadership business?

As a San Antonio native, I have learned the value of having a strong faith in Christ, working hard, and serve to impact those outside ourselves. It is my faith that propels me to think beyond the titles, accolades, positions, and financial comforts or trappings. I think in terms of how many people will be impacted by the time I’m given on this earth, so He can get the glory. I started college at St. Mary’s University to become an attorney but, after I taught a class in West Africa that spoke French (we communicated in broken Spanish) and some missionary work in Mexico, I knew that I could Impact others through education. What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

As an executive director of the Community for Life Foundation, every year I am able to see joy-filled faces of our scholarship recipients and their families. This year, for our

25th anniversary, we will have given over one million dollars in scholarships. This is due to our sponsors and private donors who want to help students like me. I remember having to work 3 jobs during my college years, and receiving this scholarship allowed me to focus on my academics and not carry the burden of having to pay several expenses out of pockets. As a educational leadership professor, I love seeing our students become school and district leaders, and applying many of the practices and principles they researched in class.

How do you define success?

Pastor Keith Graham says: “Success is measured in Succession!” I believe success will be measured by how did I create a better community, city, state, country, and world for our grandchildren’s grandchildren.

What would you like your business legacy to be?

That I used every position I was given to create other success stories. That my wife, children, and even grandchildren will say I was a true man of God that lived and served out of the abundance of HIS love.

What three pieces of advice would you give others in your line of business?

•Trust in Something Greater than Yourself

— Raising money is difficult, especially when you are leading volunteers and you will never be able to pay them commensurate to the work they do every day. We put our faith and trust in God, knowing He will provide the means to raise what we can to help others. In the moments you feel faint, remember you are helping students build families, and families build communities, and communities will build a better city.

•Embrace courage and innovation — don’t shy away from confronting inequities or reimagining systems.

•Invest in relationships and partnerships — Make sure your life partner is in alignment with your mission. God has blessed me with my wife, Melissa, an impactful community servant and leader, who came alongside me to expand our collective mission. My friends, colleagues, and even most of my acquaintances are in some way connected because we all were in Alignment with our Assignment. Impact is built in collaboration, not in isolation.

Jacqueline Smith

Why is it important to you personally to succeed?

Success is important to me personally because it allows me to fulfill my purpose of serving others, particularly veterans, individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and underserved communities. I’ve dedicated my life to making a meaningful impact, and success ensures that I can continue providing resources, education, and support to those in need.

Beyond that, my journey has been built on faith, resilience, and hard work. I’ve come too far to turn back now, and every step forward is a testament to the sacrifices, dedication, and passion I’ve poured into my mission. Success isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about creating lasting change, inspiring others, and leaving a legacy that uplifts future generations.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

My background and skills are built on a strong foundation of education, hands-on experience, and a deep passion for service. With over 27 years in the medical field, I specialize in geriatric and special needs pediatric care, gaining extensive expertise in patient care, dementia care, and healthcare administration. As a Registered Nurse, Online Training Professional, Project Manager, Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer, and Certified Dementia Care Specialist, I have further honed my skills

to provide exceptional care and training in these critical areas.

Beyond healthcare, my business acumen comes from earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration with a minor in Healthcare Administration, along with additional degrees in paralegal studies and applied sciences. Founding and leading multiple organizations, including Enchanted Hearts Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association and The Jacqueline Smith. Foundation, has given me hands-on experience in nonprofit management, event coordination, community outreach, and advocacy.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with?, if so, How do you overcome these ethical problems?

Yes, in the fields of dementia care, veteran support, and nonprofit work, several ethical concerns must be addressed, including:

1. Patient Autonomy & Dignity – Ensuring individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia are treated with respect, allowing them to make decisions as much as possible.

Our Solutions Include: Implementing person-centered care, continuous staff training, and family involvement in decision-making.

2. Quality of Care & Accountability – Providing high standards of care while preventing neglect, abuse, or exploitation.

Our Solutions Include: Strict adherence to industry best practices, staff certification, ongoing training, and internal audits to ensure compliance.

3. Equity & Accessibility – Addressing disparities in healthcare and support services for underserved communities, including veterans.

Our Solutions Include: Advocacy, community outreach programs, and partnerships to provide services to those in need regardless of financial status.

By maintaining strong ethical guidelines, continuous education, and accountability, I ensure that my businesses operate with integrity and truly serve those in need.

What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

Some of my greatest challenges in my work include:

1. Securing Funding & Resources – As a nonprofit leader, obtaining consistent funding to support Alzheimer’s care, veterans’ services, and community programs can be challenging.

Our Solutions Include: I actively seek grants,

corporate sponsorships, and community donations while ensuring financial transparency to build trust with donors.

2. Raising Awareness & Fighting Stigma –Many people still misunderstand Alzheimer’s disease, dementia care, and the struggles of veterans.

Our Solutions Include: I use media appearances, community events, and educational programs to increase awareness and advocate for those affected.

4. Meeting the Growing Demand for Services – As the need for dementia care and veteran support increases, keeping up with demand while maintaining high-quality care is a challenge.

Our Solutions Include: I focus on strategic planning, expanding partnerships, and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and outreach.

Despite these challenges, my passion for service and dedication to making a difference keep me motivated every day.

In your line of business, what motivates you?

My greatest motivation comes from making a real difference in people’s lives—whether it’s providing compassionate care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia, supporting veterans in need, or educating professionals to improve healthcare standards. Seeing the positive impact of my work, from a family finding comfort in quality dementia care to a veteran receiving stable housing, keeps me going.

I’m also driven by a deep sense of purpose and responsibility. I know that many vulnerable individuals rely on the services I provide, and that fuels my commitment to excellence. The stories of resilience, gratitude, and transformation inspire me to keep pushing forward, even when faced with challenges.

Lastly, the love for what I do and the belief

that every person deserves dignity, respect, and quality care motivate me to keep growing, learning, and advocating for those who need a voice.

What would you like your business legacy to be?

I aspire for my business legacy to be defined by compassionate care, empowerment through education, and lasting community impact.

Compassionate Care: I aim to set a standard in geriatric and special needs pediatric care, ensuring that every individual receives dignified and personalized attention. By implementing innovative care models and continuously improving service quality, I hope to inspire others in the healthcare field to prioritize empathy and excellence. Empowerment Through Education: By providing comprehensive training programs for healthcare professionals, I seek to enhance the skills and knowledge within the industry.

This commitment to education aims to improve patient outcomes and foster a culture of continuous learning and development. Lasting Community Impact: Through dedicated support for veterans and active involvement in community initiatives, I strive to address unmet needs and promote well-being. Building sustainable programs and partnerships is central to creating a positive and enduring influence on the communities we serve.

Ultimately, I hope my legacy reflects a profound dedication to service, innovation in care, and a meaningful contribution to society’s health and well-being. MAY THE WORK I’VE DONE SPEAK FOR ME!

How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

Success holds profound personal significance for me, as it honors the struggles and sacrifices of my ancestors who fought tirelessly to ensure I could have a seat at the table today. Each achievement I attain is not solely mine but represents a victory for all women, regardless of color, ethnicity, or background. By succeeding, I aim to pave the way for others, demonstrating that with perseverance and dedication, we can all rise together.

I firmly believe that the only force capable of driving out darkness is light, and it is our responsibility to embody that light. The talents bestowed upon us are not merely for personal gain; they are meant to inspire and uplift others. Someone, somewhere, is waiting to hear our stories. By courageously sharing our journeys and overcoming challenges, we offer hope, joy, and inspiration to those who may doubt their own potential. In doing so, we become the stars of our own show, illuminating the path for others to follow.

How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

These environments directly shape how my clients operate and, in turn, how I support them. Socially, relationships and trust are more important than ever. In a fast-moving, high-pressure industry, people want partners who are present, communicative, and human, not just transactional.

Economically, market shifts influence volume, strategy, and decision-making. Whether the market is strong or uncertain, my role is to remain steady, adaptable, and solutions-focused, helping clients navigate change with confidence and clarity.

Technological advancements have elevated expectations around speed, transparency, and accessibility. Embracing innovation allows me to better serve my clients while still maintaining the personal connection that differentiates my approach.

Legal and political environments are especially impactful in real estate and title, where regulation, compliance, and risk management are critical. Staying informed and proactive helps protect my clients’ interests and reinforces trust.

Together, these factors require agility, education, and strong communication. They challenge me to continuously evolve while staying grounded in the fundamentals, integrity, consistency, and relationships which ultimately drive long-term success.

Whom do you seek advice for your type of business?

I seek advice from people who have earned it through experience and results. That includes trusted mentors within the industry, senior leaders who understand the long game, and high-performing clients whose perspectives sharpen how I approach my work.

I also value insight from peers who are growth-minded and honest people who challenge my thinking, hold me accountable, and push me to operate at a higher level. I believe the best advice comes from those who understand both the business and the importance of relationships, reputation, and consistency.

Ultimately, I surround myself with people who are thoughtful, disciplined, and forward-looking, because their perspective helps me make better decisions and continue to grow with intention.

Can you describe your customers?

My customers are high-performing real estate professionals and organizations who value precision, partnership, and trust. They include residential and luxury agents, builders, developers, and commercial professionals who manage complex transactions and operate at a high level.

They are relationship-driven and growth-focused, with a strong understanding that exceptional outcomes require reliable execution and proactive communication. These clients expect more than a service provider; they seek a strategic partner who understands the nuances of their business, protects their interests, and helps elevate the experience for everyone involved.

At the core, my customers care deeply about their reputation, their clients, and the long-term success of their business. They value consistency, integrity, and collabora

tion, and they choose partners who reflect those same standards.

Why do your customers select you over your competitors?

My customers choose to work with me because I show up as my full self, because I am Michael Anthony. I am a Black, educated gay man taking up space in San Antonio, Texas, in the title industry, and I do so unapologetically. In a space where representation is still limited, I am an anomaly and I embrace that distinction with confidence, purpose, and pride.

I am God-fearing, grounded, and led by strong values. My faith shapes how I move

through business with integrity, humility, and accountability. I believe in doing what is right, not what’s easy, and my clients feel that in the way I show up for them. I lead with a pure heart, clear intentions, and a deep respect for people and relationships. I stand out because I am direct, transparent, and present. I don’t overpromise, posture, or blend into the background. I listen closely, communicate clearly, and advocate fiercely for my clients. Whether I’m working with luxury agents, builders, developers, or commercial professionals, I approach every relationship with the same level of care, precision, and commitment.

My customers value that I am consistent and deeply invested in their success. They trust that I will protect their reputation, elevate their client experience, and handle their business with the same pride and urgency as if it were my own. I am accessible, hands-on, and dependable especially when the stakes are high.

At the core, my clients choose me not simply because of a company name or a product, but because of the relationship we build. They chose me because my word carries weight, my presence brings value, and my leadership is rooted in purpose. I am Michael Anthony—an anomaly in the industry and I lead with faith, integrity, and intention.

What three pieces of advice would you give others in your line of business today?

1. Build relationships, not transactions. This business will always be about people before paperwork. Take the time to genuinely understand your clients—their goals, pressures, and priorities. When you lead with service, consistency, and care, trust follows. Transactions may come and go, but strong relationships are what sustain a long, successful career.

2. Be visible, be authentic, and take up

space.

Don’t shrink yourself to fit the room. Your background, perspective, and personality are not obstacles, they are assets. When you show up as your full self, you attract the right clients and partners. Authenticity creates connection, and connection creates opportunity. Stand out by being real, not by trying to blend in.

3. Lead with integrity and intention. Your reputation is everything. Do what you say you’re going to do, communicate clearly, and handle every situation, especially the difficult ones—with professionalism and honesty. Let your values guide your decisions, even when no one is watching. Longterm success is built on trust, accountability, and how you show up when it matters most.

What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

One of my greatest challenges is understanding that I cannot be everything to everyone and learning where my time, energy, and strengths are best invested. In a relationship-driven role, there is a natural desire to support everyone at a high level, but true impact comes from being intentional and focused.

The challenge has been balancing accessibility with prioritization, while maintaining the level of service and consistency my clients expect. Over time, I have learned that setting clear boundaries and aligning with the right partners allows me to serve more effectively, deliver better results, and build stronger, long-term relationships.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

My greatest inspiration has always been my mom. She taught me the value of hard work, integrity, and showing up for people with consistency and grace. Watching her navigate life with strength, resilience, and heart shaped how I approach both business and

relationships. She instilled in me the importance of treating people with respect, keeping my word, and leading with character principles that guide me in how I work every day. Her example reminds me that success is not just measured by accomplishments, but by the impact you have on others and the legacy you leave behind.

What would you like your business legacy to be?

I want my business legacy to be rooted in trust, relationships, and impact. I want to be known as someone who elevated the people and businesses around me, someone who did not just bring deals to the table, but brought value, consistency, and integrity to every relationship.

I aim to be remembered as a connector and a catalyst: the person agents, partners, and leadership could count on to show up, follow through, and help them grow—not just in transactions, but in confidence and opportunity. My goal is to build long-term partnerships, not short-term wins, and to leave every room, team, and market stronger than I found it.

Ultimately, I want my legacy to reflect that I built a business on genuine relationships, professionalism, and heart—and that people felt supported (seen), respected (heard), and better (loved) for having worked with me.

Velma has devoted herself to nonprofit and community service since 1999. In 2010, she transitioned from working as an employee

within nonprofit organizations to serving as a full-time servant leader in the community. Guided by her faith, she felt called to freely give her time, talents, and leadership where God directed her to serve.

She has been honored to hold leadership positions with numerous civic and social organizations, including the San Antonio Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; the Alpha Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; SA100; and the Oakes Club of San Antonio.

What Drives Her to Serve the Community

Velma’s commitment to service is rooted in her love for God and her desire to live out His commandment to love and serve others. Raised in a home grounded in compassion and concern for others, service has always been a natural part of her life. In 2009, Velma embraced the role of First Lady of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church—not merely as a title, but as a calling and an unpaid position of service and influence, undertaken by choice. In this role,

she has worked intentionally to strengthen and expand the Antioch Erna Baker Food Bank and clothing ministry, which provides groceries to hundreds of residents each month and clothing to those in need. Through her leadership on the Meals on Wheels San Antonio Board of Trustees, Velma helped facilitate a partnership establishing Antioch Missionary Baptist Church as a Meals on Wheels distribution site on San Antonio’s Eastside—addressing a critical need for area seniors. This partnership continues to support the expansion of food access and stability for vulnerable populations.

Velma has also led and supported ministries such as the Sisterhood Ministry and the Ministers’, Deacons’ Wives, and Widows Ministry, empowering women to pursue personal growth, self-development, and positive change. She is deeply committed to uplifting women and girls, using her voice, platform, and resources to guide and enhance lives throughout the church and the broader community.

Personal Reflection

Velma believes that God is her sustainer and that all she is comes from Him. Her ultimate desire is to please Him in everything she does. She believes that if she can help someone along the way—by encouraging them or sharing the love of Jesus Christ— then her life’s work has purpose and meaning.

Velma Willoughby Kemp is, above all, a servant leader of her Heavenly Father.

How did you get started in this business?

I began in 2010 and only sold shoes and a limited amount of clothing, I started because I loved to shop, still do and my spouse said, “you are spending too much money shopping.” After telling this to my sister Dawna, she suggested I shop for others since it wasn’t shopping for me, I just loved the shopping experience.

What is your background, Education, Work Experience?

Wow- it multi-faceted. I have a BBA in Business but my work experience has been cashier to Project Manager to now Sales Broker in Medicare insurance plans along with individual dental and vision plans. I was once a bank teller. Yea, I have done a lot of things, career wise.

How long have you been in business?

My business has been going since May 25, 2010, that is the day I received my license and was official.

How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business?

A lot! When the business began there wasn’t much that was done on social media, had I known then what I know now that would have been top priority. The business

was invited to participate in New York Fashion Week as a result of a social media post. Being online only now has a tremendous impact on my business.

Why is it important to you personally to succeed?

For the giveback, my business hosted, for 7 years, a fundraiser that was a giveback to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s and Dementia and those who are caregivers for those patients. It’s important to succeed to be a beacon and to be able to bring awareness and to giveback to others.

What do you see the future holds for your type of business?

Not quite sure now as a little setback has occurred with my health after my pancreatic cancer diagnosis but I hope more giveback, more awareness type fashion events, mentorship for new business, so quite a bit I anticipate.

What type of business form do you have, sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation?

Sole proprietor

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

It was in my blood. My father worked for Carbide Chemical plant while running a successful business in the 60’s and 70’s, my mother made hats and catered events, I watched them my entire life so it was just meant to be.

Do you know who your competitors are?

Nope.

How are people aware of your business?

Social media, pop up shops, word of mouth and articles like this.

Why are you in this type of business?

I turn pain into purpose. This work exists because healing saved my life and I knew my voice could help others reclaim theirs.

How did you get started in this business? I started by writing to survive. What began as personal healing grew into poetry, ministry, and community when others connected to my truth.

What is your background, education, and work experience?

I am a poet, author, casting director, actress, mentor, and nonprofit founder. My greatest education came through lived experience, leadership, and learning by doing.

How long have you been in business?

I have been in business since 2016, with a foundation formed through years of growth, obedience, and refinement.

Why is success important to you personally?

Success means impact. It is about creating spaces where people heal, rediscover purpose, and realize their story still matters.

What does the future hold for your business?

The future holds expansion with integrity, greater reach, creative healing platforms, and sustainable impact rooted in authenticity.

What are your greatest achievements so far?

Publishing Healing Souls, releasing two albums titled Beautifully Flawed and Back To Me, starring in the film Don’t Hate Celebrate, serving as Assistant Director for the play Broken Glass, winning Inspirational Poet of the Year, founding HerStory Outreach, hosting conferences, and helping others choose healing.

What legacy do you want to leave?

I want to leave a legacy of courage, healing, and truth that shows broken places can birth powerful purpose.

RED HAD SOCIETY

Red Hat Society – Dazzling Damas Chapter

The poem Warning by Jenny Joseph inspired two women in Fullerton, California to create the Red Hat Society in 1998. Its famous opening line—“When I am old, I shall wear a red hat and a purple dress that doesn’t go…”—sparked a joyful movement celebrating women over 50. Red and purple became the signature colors, symbolizing freedom, fun, and embracing life with spirit.

The Dazzling Damas were chartered as an official RHS chapter in June 2018. Chapter leaders are known as Queens, and Frances Garza-Alvarado proudly serves as Queen of the Dazzlings.

From the start, the chapter embraced the Red Hat philosophy of fun, friendship, and living boldly. They held a formal coronation for their Queen and began enjoying monthly gatherings—never “meetings”—because Red Hatters don’t do rules. Members attend special events, take day trips, and even travel together. They’ve already cruised to the Caribbean and Alaska, with another Caribbean adventure in the works.

Most recently, the Damas traveled to Washington, D.C., where they visited a Smithsonian Museum of American History exhibit honoring Dama Martha Tijerina, one of the first Hispanic women to serve as a Spanish-language TV news anchor in the United States.

Many Dazzling Damas are deeply involved in the community, and the chapter quickly committed to supporting San Antonio nonprofits. They have sponsored tables at fundraisers for the Salvation Army, Pan American League, Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, Ma Hila’s Heart Children’s Cancer Organization, GED Fabulous Holiday Scholarship Brunch, San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, Angie Angels, and more. Their Christmas projects have supported children’s shelters, homeless shelters, nursing

homes, and food pantries. Their service has earned them recognition on Pride of San Antonio and Catholic Television of San Antonio. The Damas are known as community leaders, and the chapter is proud to have five members inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame.

I became a Dazzling Dama in 2022 and am honored to be part of this remarkable sisterhood. Their vibrant red attire feels especially fitting for the month of February—bold, joyful, and full of heart.

Rey Feo 77 in the Neighborhood: Celebrating Education, Service, and Togetherness

A beautiful evening of purpose brought together attorneys, judges, members of the Rey Feo Royal Court Consejos, family, friends, and media. United in community, guests gathered to honor Rey Feo LXXVII, Dr. Damaso Andres Oliva Jr., and his unwavering commitment to education and service. Hosted by Mr. Carlo Garcia and Dr. Kim Ross, the night embodied the true spirit of neighborhood fellowship, generosity, and shared pride.

Proceeds supported the Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation, helping pass the torch of knowledge and expand opportunities for students across all grade levels.

A heartfelt thank-you to the gracious hosts for creating such a warm and welcoming evening of breaking bread and building connections. This casual gathering offered a meaningful opportunity to learn more about the organization’s mission and its dedication to strengthening education throughout our community.

NET WORTH VS. NETWORK:

Networking for People Who Hate Networking (And the People Who Do It)

For many, the word “networking” conjures images of stiff suits, forced small talk, and high-pressure sales pitches. It’s no wonder so many talented professionals avoid it. However, the most successful leaders understand a simple secret: Networking isn’t about selling—it’s about connection.

When you shift your perspective from “What can I get?” to “Who can I meet?” the anxiety begins to vanish. Here is how to navigate your next event with confidence:

1. Lead with Curiosity, Not a Pitch The biggest source of networking fear is the pressure to be “impressive.” Instead of rehearsing a perfect elevator pitch, focus on being a “Bridge Builder.” Ask people about their journey and their “why.” When you show genuine interest in others, the conversation flows naturally, and the pressure to perform disappears.

2. Focus on Service over Sales. The marketplace is

ultimately a community. When you enter a room with the goal of seeing how you can help someone else—whether through a resource, a piece of advice, or a strategic referral—you are no longer a salesperson; you are a problem-solver. Approaching a room with a servant’s heart makes you an asset rather than a solicitor.

3. Embrace Your Authentic Brand. Authenticity is the most effective branding tool available. Whether it is a signature style, a unique background, or a specific area of expertise, lean into what makes you unique. People do business with people they like and remember. Being memorable is far easier when you are unapologetically yourself.

Networking is simply the art of building community. San Antonio is a large city, but it is a small town at heart. Take a breath, leave the rigid scripts at home, and focus on building one meaningful relationship at a time. You are always just one conversation away from your next great opportunity.

Running your own business requires dedication, discipline and passion. Which is most important to you?

I think dedication is the most important aspect, because you have to be all in when working on your own business so that you don’t give up every time a challenge presents itself.

Have you run your own business before?

This is my first business on my own, although I have helped several start-ups, businesses, and political campaigns throughout my career.

How did you get started in your career?

In my communications career, I started out by pursuing my education at St. Mary’s University, interning at a local news station, and working with an agent to secure as many on-camera jobs as possible for experience. I learned early on the value of hard work, and began acting in commercials, independent films, modeling, and later graduated to working as a press secretary and spokesperson for large state agencies in Texas. While being a life-long runner, and avid health enthusiast, I was inspired to start my own spa. Over the years, I learned from my sister and registered dietitian about the importance of creating my own meal preps and spent years working with person trainers to find the ideal balance with exercise and nutrition.

improve their health.

What woman in history or your own family has been your greatest inspiration?

My aunt Diane has been one of my greatest inspirations. She was the Chief Agriculture Specialist with Customs & Border Protections, she attained three college degrees and served as a role model who was always cool, calm, and collected. As a little girl, I used to think she was secretly Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman! She has always taken the best, intelligent approach to all of life’s obstacles, while maintaining a close family with faith and perseverance. She truly is wonderful!

How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way?

What three pieces of advice would you give other women in business today?

Do extensive research on the business you are choosing to go into and review proven strategies that have worked for others in similar business as yours. Make sure to create a detailed business plan with realistic costs and have an expert review your plan.

What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

Getting to see the happiness in our client’s faces when they drop sizes, see results and

I worked really hard, studied, took no short cuts, and placed my faith in God and in my abilities. Some people have advantages in life, I just created goals for myself, and refused to allow laziness, or defeat overwhelm me. Resilience is what it really takes to be the best version of yourself. What would you like your ‘Women in Business’ legacy to be?

I would like my legacy to be one of resilience, education, compassion, and enduring strength in the face of adversity. I hope to inspire other women to pursue their dreams without bringing other women down. We live in a society that puts a lot of pressure on women to “have it all,” but its ok if what I do is different from someone else. We can all do well and still cheer each other on. There is enough hate and division in this world, we should help empower one another and most importantly, have faith in ourselves.

Love at First Design: The 1967 Thomassima II

Love has many forms. On Valentine’s Day, it’s often symbolized by roses, passion, and the color red—but in the world of automotive history, love can also take the shape of a rare red Ferrari, born from obsession, heartbreak, and unwavering belief in a dream. Few cars embody this kind of romance better than the 1967 Thomassima II, a machine as rare and emotional as the story behind it.

A young Tom Meade always dreamed of

owning an exotic car. That dream became crystal clear the moment he saw his first Ferrari Testarossa, igniting a lifelong love affair with Italian performance and design. While living in Modena, Italy, the very heart of Ferrari, Meade took a bold step. In 1964, driven purely by passion, he built the first automobile of his own design. Tragedy soon followed—catastrophic floods destroyed the car. For many, that loss would have ended the story. For Meade, it only deepened his resolve. True love doesn’t quit.

From that heartbreak something extraordinary emerged. The Thomassima II, finished in unforgettable Ferrari red and infused with authentic Italian soul, became a rolling declaration of devotion—to craftsmanship, creativity, and a dream that refused to fade. Today, its sibling, Thomassima III, resides in the Ferrari Museum in Modena, a testament to Meade’s legacy and vision. The Thomassima II you see here is far more than a rare automobile—it is proof that perseverance can transform heartbreak into beauty.

That story of love continued decades later. In 2015, the Thomassima II briefly called VAULT its home, where it was meticulous-

ly cared for inside a climate-controlled car storage facility, protected and preserved with the respect a one-of-one masterpiece deserves. The VAULT team went further, carefully detailing the car and proudly displaying it at the San Antonio Auto and Truck Show, allowing enthusiasts to witness firsthand a piece of automotive romance and history.

Tom Meade would eventually earn the title “The Famous American Ferrari Designer,” but his true legacy is written in red paint and timeless curves. This Valentine’s Day, the 1967 Thomassima II reminds us that the greatest love stories aren’t just told—they’re built, protected, and shared with the world.

Luxurious icy platinum blonde

The look is centered around a clean, icy blonde that feels modern and natural rather than overdone. The color is bright yet soft, with a cool, creamy tone that keeps the blonde looking fresh and healthy, not flat, or harsh. A subtle shadow at the root adds depth and makes the color feel livedin and effortless. The hair is styled in loose, brushed waves with natural movement, parted slightly off-center so it falls easily around the face. It feels glamorous without trying too hard. The makeup stays understated and balanced, with smooth, natural skin, softly defined eyes, and a classic red lip that adds just enough strength to the look without stealing focus. Altogether, the hair and makeup come together in a way that feels confident, timeless, and polished enough for a magazine, but still very wearable and true to the model.

ELIZABETH

VICTORIA

For years, I didn’t know what my future held, or if I would have one at all. Growing up, I faced significant health challenges that prevented me from living a normal life. A few years ago, everything changed when I underwent a life-changing surgery that allowed me to stop simply surviving and start truly living. With this transformation, I began taking risks and trying things far outside my comfort zone, never imagining that doing so would become the best decision of my life.

Today, I feel my future is now filled with purpose and driven by the dreams of my younger self. My future goals include earning a degree in kinesiology, completing my master herbalist certification to become a holistic health practitioner, and expanding my modeling career into overseas markets.

Some of the most meaningful experiences so far include attending Model and Talent Expo with my incredible agent, Lari Nelson, and receiving multiple opportunities to sign with agencies across the country. However, my favorite part of this journey has been sharing it with my younger sister, Katherine, and having the unwavering support of our phenomenal mother, Kara.

From an early age, I have loved entertainment. Whether it was putting on plays and fashion shows in my living room or performing dances and singing for my family. I never expected my passion to grow into a career, but I am incredibly grateful it has. I have also always wanted to go to law school to become a lawyer or study marine biology. Protecting the innocent is especially important to me, whether that means defending clients in court or protecting ocean wildlife.

In November 2025, I attended the Model and Talent Expo in Dallas with Nelson Fashion Group. It was an incredible experience that opened many doors, including contract offers from Japan, Milan, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York.

I am excited to see where this industry will take me and thankful to have the right people supporting me along the way.

The Cheesecake Factory at La Cantera

Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and so are you!

February is the month for Love and appreciation. Valentine’s Day is one of America’s favorite holidays to celebrate with that special someone in your life. As Food and Wine editors, Bryan and I enjoy having dinner at unique, and welcoming ambiance restaurants. While San Antonio has many palatable restaurants, it is impossible to have a favorite restaurant.

The Shops are La Cantera offer many dining options. One beautiful restaurant that came to mind was The Cheesecake Factory. The restaurant offers a wide range of items on the menu. Bryan and I enjoyed a Filet Mignon dinner. The steak was very tender

served with red mashed potatoes, buttered string green beans, and sour dough bread. We also enjoyed two glasses of sauvignon wine. For dessert, we enjoyed a slice of their famous cheesecakes, the original with fresh strawberries drizzled on top.

The Cheesecake Factory – La Cantera was a warm and memorable experience with pleasant staff and a manager that made sure his patrons were happy. We highly recommend visiting the restaurant for your upcoming celebrations.

Spring Awakens Hill Country

Awakens in the Texas Country

Spring in the Texas Hill Country is one of the best times to explore the region’s wineries and vineyards. Days stretch a little longer, the air softens, and the landscape comes alive—vineyards returning to green and highways framed by wildflowers. Just a short drive from San Antonio, the Hill Country offers an easy escape that feels worlds away, especially this time of year.

The scale and diversity of the region may surprise you if you haven’t visited recently. Texas Hill Country tasting rooms welcome more than one million visitors each year, drawing wine-trail regulars and road-trippers alike. Local wineries work with over 70 grape varieties, including fan favorites such as Tempranillo, Tannat, Mourvedre, Viognier and Picpoul Blanc. The Texas Hill Country AVA is the third-largest AVA in the United States and one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the country—an impressive distinction for a destination just outside San Antonio’s doorstep.

February marks a particularly sweet spot in the region, as Texas Hill Country Wineries’ beloved Wine Lovers Celebration Passport is in full swing. Running from January 26 through February 27, the self-guided event invites couples, friends, and solo explorers alike to discover the Hill Country one tasting at a time. Passport holders can visit up to four wineries per day, enjoying a full complimentary tasting at each stop, plus 10% off the purchase of three or more bottles.

With more than 55 participating wineries, the experience is as relaxed or adventurous as you want it to be—linger over a leisurely afternoon close to Fredericksburg, or turn it into a long weekend of scenic drives and spontaneous discoveries. Tickets are $100 per pair or $65 for an individual, and there’s an added feel-good bonus: $5 from every

ticket sold supports the Texas Hill Country Wine Industry Scholarship Fund, which has awarded $123,000 to 64 students pursuing careers in viticulture, enology, and hospitality. It’s a reminder that every glass poured helps shape the future of Texas wine.

As February fades into March, the Hill Country shifts seamlessly into its most photogenic time of year, wildflower season. Texas Hill Country Wineries Wine & Wildflower Journey Passport takes place from March 23 through April 17, 2026. This springtime passport celebrates the region at its most vibrant—warm days, blooming fields, and award-winning wines enjoyed against postcard-worthy backdrops. Guests can join for a single day or savor the full journey over all twenty-six days, making it one of the most flexible and immersive ways to experience Texas Wine Country.

For those new to Texas wine—or even longtime fans looking to branch out—planning a Hill Country trip has never been easier. Head to texashillcountrywineries.org and visit the Plan A Trip section, which allows visitors to explore interactive maps, filter wineries by area, and design an itinerary that fits their pace—perfect for spontaneous day trips or carefully curated wine weekends. You can also purchase your wine passport on the site.

Protecting Your Peace During Uncertain Times

We are living in unprecedented times in our country today. Life Stressors such as the political climate, polarization amongst our friends and neighbors, in addition to high costs of daily living, accelerated technology, social media, and fast-paced lifestyles can take a toll on us all. These issues can be detrimental to our physical, mental, emotional health and relationships. As a Doctor of Clinical Counseling and mental health, I am not immune to the deleterious effects either. And, while I do not hold all the answers, this article will focus on ways to cope with the current situation in our society, in addition, to life stressors, such as work, family, finances, maintaining a home/ vehicle, and our own health.

First, we all know about stress, but I want to define life stressors. A life stressor is any event, experience, or condition that causes significant stress in an individual’s life. For example, in pre-historic times a life stressor was often associated with survival. In response to the stressor, the body will enter fight-or-flight syndrome, which prepares it to either fight or run, engaging the brain’s amygdala and hypothalamus, increasing the body’s adrenaline, cortisol, breathing rates, blood pressure, and muscle tension. In modern society, we do not generally face true threats or stressors, nonetheless the body still responds in the same way, leading to the biochemical and physical changes that occur. Because we do not expend that energy from fight-or-flight syndrome, those processes continue in the body, leading to insomnia, worry, irritability, muscle tension, and shallow breathing. The long-term effects of stress responses can lead to disruption to daily living, sleep/appetite, and other activities of daily living and the immune system.

Therefore, it is essential that we find ways to mitigate the effects of stress on our body, mind, and emotions. The following are ways to help:

Sighing is a sign of shallow breathing, so when you find yourself sighing it is your body’s way of getting more oxygen. Deep diaphragmatic breathing using the lower part of the stomach on the inhale, holding several seconds, and then releasing while contracting those muscles for five-minute periods can alleviate the problem, while decreasing blood pressure, pulse, and calming the mind.

Meditation, such as using guided imagery imagining a peaceful, happy place in your mind and sensing it using all five senses with your eyes closed can also rebalance the body and mind, bringing calm. Exercising if approved by a physician, can help release the fight-or-flight chemicals. Going for a walk outside, jogging, working out at the gym, weight training and yoga can help as well.

Mindfulness, which is being present in the moment and not thinking about the past or future but really being in that moment, finding gratitude, joy, and peace can ground you.

Gratitude is key as well. Often, we focus on the negative, so we must reframe to see the positive. Being grateful for the little things

we take for granted, such as loved ones, the beauty of nature, the breeze or warm sun, and our daily gifts can help us reframe towards a positive mindset. Using a gratitude journal is a daily practice for me, and it has helped me on the most challenging days to be thankful even in a difficult or challenging time.

Talking to a friend or family member and building a strong support system is important so you realize you are not alone and can process complex feelings. Finally, eating nutritious food, staying hydrated, limiting alcohol to cope, and doing a non-goal directed activity such as watching a favorite TV show, reading, listening to Audible books/podcasts, and enjoying some

time reading SA Monthly Magazine will also prove to be a great leisure activity! So, enjoy yourself a bit, you deserve some self-care! In certain circumstances, some individuals may need to seek professional therapy or be evaluated for psychotropic medication by a primary care provider or psychiatrist. Additionally, if you or a loved one finds that they are in crisis, please call or text 988 which is the suicide and crisis lifeline available 24/7. My final words are that we can do this together! We will adapt, cope, affect change, and live our best lives! I hope these tips and the psychoeducation helps you live your best life even when the world around us may be uncertain, challenging, unstable and stressful.

February is the start of the season of love. Flowers, chocolates, jewelry, cards, etc., all are tell-tale outward expressions of love and admiration. For many, Valentine’s Day is a day of recognizing the one you love. For others, Valentine’s Day can remind them of love lost, being alone, and have them questioning why they are not paired with anyone. Perhaps relationships in the past might lead to negative feelings and make it a bit of a challenge in navigating the ability to like the holiday itself.

In keeping with the idea of love, the best relationship one can invest in is the relationship with themselves. According to PRNewswire.com (2021):

“Approximately 36% of Americans report they ‘always’ like themselves, with another 47% saying they do so ‘most of the time’. However, a global study from The Body Shop survey indicates a ‘self-love crisis’ with nearly 1 in 2 women feeling more self-doubt than self-love, and 85% of people worldwide potentially struggling with low self-esteem.” To give more perspective, “A global report launched today by The Body Shop has identified a self-love* crisis for women around the world, with one in two women feeling more self-doubt than self-love, and 60% wishing they had more respect for themselves (PRNewswire.com, 2021).”

We often focus on the negative because it seems easier at times to dwell on the things we do not love about ourselves. But what if we took that focus on the things we do not like about ourselves, and focus on the things we do?

When meeting with clients, I often assign this simple assignment: an affirmation journal. Every day, it is a challenge to write about one thing that the person likes about themselves. It can be anything: their appear-

ance, their work ethic, their sense of humor, something they accomplished, etc. This might seem pointless to some, but the idea is that after a week, someone starts to see more positive things about themselves. In a month, a person starts to have to dig deeper and be more creative; in about a quarter of a year someone honestly believes it. Imagine what someone will feel about themselves in a year: they will realize that they truly are amazing.

This is actually rooted in science: according to Wellspringprevention.org,

“Research has shown that affirmations can activate the brain’s reward centers, leading to increased feelings of self-worth and motivation. A study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience found that self-affirmation activates the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, an area associated with self-related processing and valuation. This activation helps individuals focus on sources of positive value, thereby enhancing their self-worth and resilience. Additionally, affirmations have been linked to decreased stress levels and improved problem-solving abilities under pressure. Regular practice of self-affirmations has been shown to reduce health-deteriorating stress and improve academic performance by altering the brain’s response to threatening information.

Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that self-affirmations can modulate activity in the brain’s emotional centers, such as the amygdala, which processes fear and emotional responses. This modulation helps manage emotional reactions to stress, fostering greater emotional resilience and overall well-being.”

It is no secret that self-confidence leads to better moods, better energy and concentration, more ability to take risks for your betterment, less depression and anxiety,

and better health and lifestyle outcomes as one has an increased interest in their overall being.

So, what can one do? Using “I” statements to own the compliment and confidence, ensure daily affirmations are followed, and get creative with them, whether it be present or past tense (with greater emphasis on present tense, but also allowing for the

accomplishments of past tense to be acknowledged). It comes down to recognizing and honoring yourself for the amazing person you are.

Happy Valentines Day folks and love yourself.

To the working stay-athome mom this

Valentine’s Day

I see you. I hear you. I’m with you. We pour all our love into our families and our work, often leaving little room for ourselves. “Me time” gets pushed aside. Valentine’s Day might not look like dinner reservations and champagne — it might look like flowers and a balloon, and a quick kiss on the forehead as your husband heads out the door.

You’re home, juggling your career while your child sleeps in, squeezing in emails between

loads of laundry, maybe hoping for five minutes to shower. You’re keeping the house running, setting up Valentine’s playdates so your little one feels loved and included — all while sitting in the corner of a play place on valentine’s day with toddlers zipping around, thumbing through client messages on your phone.

You got this, mama. Even if it looks different this year, love still shines through you in a thousand small ways. Celebrate when you can, and remember — you are not alone. From one working stay-at-home mom to another,

The Biology of Love: How San Antonio’s Way of Life Shapes Our Health and Our Hearts

February in San Antonio has a distinct rhythm. Cooler air, full patios, and the steady pulse of the River Walk remind us that connection is central to life here. We are a city built on family, tradition, and shared meals—where love is lived daily, not just celebrated once a year.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s worth asking a deeper question: How does our health shape the way we love, and how does the San Antonio lifestyle either support—or quietly strain—those connections?

Love is not just emotional. It is biological. And the way we eat, move, rest, and manage stress directly affects how well we connect with the people who matter most.

Love Is Chemistry—and Lifestyle Shapes the Reaction

Love begins in the brain. Dopamine fuels desire, oxytocin strengthens bonding, serotonin stabilizes mood, and endorphins reduce stress. Together, these chemicals create attraction, trust, and emotional closeness.

But these systems are sensitive. Chronic stress, poor sleep, inflammation, and inactivity blunt the brain’s ability to experience connection. In a city known for rich food and long table gatherings, balance becomes essential.

The goal isn’t to abandon culture—it’s to support it. When nutrition is balanced, movement is consistent, and stress is managed, emotional connection deepens, and joy feels more accessible.

Heart Health Is Relationship Health

In San Antonio, where heart disease and metabolic conditions remain leading health concerns, cardiovascular wellness affects more than longevity—it affects intimacy, energy, and emotional presence. A healthy heart supports circulation, stamina, and mood regulation. When heart health declines, energy for connection and shared experiences often follows suit.

Fortunately, supporting heart health doesn’t require extreme measures. Walking the Mission Reach trails, enjoying early morning River Walk strolls, strength training at local gyms, and staying active through community events all contribute to better cardiovascular health. Movement doesn’t need to be intense. It needs to be consistent.

Stress: The Silent Strain on Love

San Antonio is a city of service—home to healthcare professionals, military families, caregivers, and small business owners. Many residents carry heavy responsibilities, often putting their own needs last.

Chronic stress elevates cortisol, disrupts hormones, interferes with sleep, and dulls emotional responsiveness. Over time, stress can masquerade as emotional distance or relationship dissatisfaction. Many people aren’t disconnected; they’re depleted.

Stress reduction starts small: evening walks, shared meals without screens, consistent sleep, time outdoors, and setting healthy boundaries. Calm bodies connect more deeply.

Self-Love in a Community-Oriented City

San Antonio values family and togetherness, but self-care is often sacrificed in the process. True self-love isn’t indulgent—it’s foundational. It means fueling the body properly, addressing health concerns early, and building strength and mobility to remain independent and engaged over time. When we neglect ourselves, we unintentionally ask our loved ones to compensate. Healthy self-care allows love to be

generous rather than exhausted.

Intimacy Reflects Overall Health

Sexual health is closely tied to overall wellness. Declining intimacy is often linked to hormonal imbalance, inflammation, fatigue, poor sleep, or declining physical confidence. Addressing these factors restores not only physical intimacy, but emotional closeness and self-assurance. Intimacy is not a luxury—it is a vital form of communication.

Age Well, Together

One of San Antonio’s strengths is its respect for generations. Families grow together here. Love evolves.

Strength training preserves independence. Nutrition supports cognition. Mobility maintains freedom. Preventive care protects quality of life. Investing in health allows relationships to deepen rather than diminish with age.

This Valentine’s Day, Redefine the Gift

Flowers fade. Chocolates disappear. Health compounds. This February, consider giving a different kind of gift: shared walks, nourishing meals, mutual wellness goals, better sleep, and preventive care. Love is not just something we feel—it’s something we practice.

And in a city built on connection and heart, the healthiest hearts don’t just beat stronger. They love longer

Keeping Love Alive in a Time-Starved World: A Physician’s Perspective on Relationships,

Valentine’s Day often arrives wrapped in images of roses, candlelight dinners, and grand romantic gestures. Yet for many couples, modern life rarely resembles these curated moments. Between demanding careers, family obligations, financial pressures, and the constant pace of digital connectivity, relationships today face unique stressors that can quietly erode connection if left unattended.

Love, however, is not sustained by occasional celebrations alone. It thrives through intentional daily care, thoughtful communication, and a willingness to address both emotional and physical health within a partnership.

The Modern Stress Burden on Relationships

Chronic stress is one of the most underestimated threats to relationship health. When individuals are overwhelmed, the body activates a prolonged stress response that can lead to fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and reduced emotional availability. Over time, this physiological and emotional strain can decrease patience, diminish empathy, and make communication more reactive than reflective. Couples often find themselves managing logistics rather than nurturing connection. Conversations become centered around schedules, responsibilities, and problem-solving rather than shared experiences, emotional support, or intimacy. While this shift is common, it can gradually create emotional distance if partners do not intentionally reconnect.

Managing Stress Together

Stress, and Intimacy

Healthy relationships do not require the elimination of stress but rather the development of shared strategies to navigate it. Couples can benefit from simple yet meaningful practices:

• Prioritizing time together intentionally. Even brief, consistent periods of uninterrupted connection can strengthen emotional bonds.

• Supporting individual stress management. Encouraging each partner to engage in restorative activities such as exercise, adequate sleep, and mindfulness benefits both individuals and the relationship.

• Practicing teamwork. Viewing challenges as shared obstacles rather than individual burdens fosters resilience and partnership.

Improving Communication and Emotional Connection

Effective communication remains one of the strongest predictors of long-term relationship satisfaction. Communication is not simply about resolving conflict; it is about fostering understanding and emotional safety.

Helpful communication strategies include:

• Listening to understand rather than to respond.

• Expressing needs clearly and respectfully.

• Validating a partner’s perspective, even when opinions differ.

• Scheduling intentional conversations about relationship health rather than waiting for conflict to arise.

When communication remains open and compassionate, couples often feel more secure discussing sensitive topics, including emotional vulnerability and physical intimacy.

The

Often-Unspoken Component of Relationship Health: Sexual Wellness

Physical intimacy is a vital component of many romantic relationships and contributes significantly to emotional closeness and overall partnership satisfaction. However, difficulties with libido, arousal, or sexual function are far more common than many individuals realize.

Both men and women frequently experience changes in sexual health related to stress, hormonal shifts, aging, medical conditions, medications, or psychological factors. Despite how common these challenges are, they are often accompanied by significant embarrassment, shame, or fear of judgment. As a result, many individuals delay or completely avoid discussing these concerns with their partner or healthcare provider. Unfortunately, silence can allow treatable medical or psychological conditions to persist and can create unnecessary strain within relationships

Encouraging Open Conversations with Healthcare Providers

It is important for individuals and couples to recognize that sexual health is a legitimate and essential aspect of overall wellness. Healthcare professionals are specifically trained to address these concerns in a confidential, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment.

For men, issues such as erectile dysfunction, changes in libido, or performance anxiety can sometimes signal underlying cardiovascular, hormonal, or metabolic concerns that benefit from medical evaluation.

For women, challenges including low libido, discomfort with intimacy, hormonal changes, or changes related to menopause, postpartum transitions, or medication use are both common and highly treatable.

Seeking medical guidance is not only about improving physical intimacy; it can significantly enhance emotional connection, confidence, and overall relationship satisfaction. Addressing sexual health proactively allows couples to maintain closeness and prevents small concerns from evolving into long-term barriers.

Removing Shame from the Conversation

One of the greatest barriers to care is the misconception that sexual health difficulties represent personal failure or relationship inadequacy. In reality, they are frequently rooted in physiologic or psychological processes that deserve thoughtful medical attention.

Healthcare providers approach these discussions with professionalism, discretion, and empathy. Their goal is to support patient well-being, strengthen relationships, and provide evidence-based treatment options tailored to individual needs.

Love as an Ongoing Commitment

Valentine’s Day serves as a meaningful reminder that relationships require consistent attention and care. Sustaining love is less about perfection and more about presence. It involves choosing connections despite busy schedules, prioritizing honest conversations, and recognizing that both emotional and physical intimacy are vital aspects of long-term partnership health.

By addressing stress, strengthening communication, and seeking medical support when needed, couples can build resilient, fulfilling relationships that endure beyond a single holiday and continue to grow through every stage of life.

Happiest Valentine’s Day!

A Temple Worth Restoring

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God?” (1 Corinthians 6:19)

At Aspire Regenerative Therapy, this Scripture is more than inspiration—it is a blueprint. The body was not designed to be discarded, ignored, or managed by symptoms alone. It was created to heal, restore, and function in alignment with God’s design. Biblically, we are spirit beings, who possess a soul, and live in a body. The body is our physical vessel—bones, joints, tissues, and systems that require proper support to regenerate and repair. The soul consists of the mind, will, and emotions—often carrying the weight of stress, trauma, and unresolved patterns that impact physical health. The spirit is the life-giving connection to God, where truth, identity, and purpose are anchored.

Regenerative therapy honors this design by working with the body’s natural healing processes—stimulating repair, reducing inflammation, restoring circulation, and improving function—while acknowledging that true healing is holistic.

Love, at its highest form, is stewardship. This February, we invite our community to see their health not as a burden, but as a calling. A temple worth restoring.

Founder, Aspire Regenerative Therapy www.AspireTherapy.Health www.AspireMinistries.net

Love That Restores

February is known as the month of love— but at Aspire Regenerative Therapy, we believe love is most powerfully expressed through restoration. True love cares for the whole person: spirit, soul and body. Scripture tells us, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 1:2). This verse reflects the foundation of regenerative wellness—supporting the body’s God-designed ability to repair, restore, and renew. Healing is not about masking symptoms; it is about addressing root causes and creating an environment where the body can do what it was created to do. Every day, we serve people who feel worn down by pain, inflammation, fatigue, and chronic conditions. Regenerative therapy works by activating the body’s natural healing responses—stimulating tissue repair, improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and restoring function. In biblical terms, this is restoration: “He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:3).

Love looks like stewardship of the body. Love listens, intervenes early, and chooses renewal over resignation. This February, we invite our community to redefine love—not as something sentimental, but as something intentional. Because when the body is restored, purpose can move forward.

Love, Friendship & Frequency: When Energy Becomes Healing

February is the month of love — but beyond flowers and chocolates, true love begins within the body itself: in our cells, in the energetic heart, and in the frequency we carry every day.

At MedNatura, we understand that human beings are not only physical bodies — we are energetic systems. Every emotion such as love, gratitude, joy, or stress emits a frequency that directly impacts the nervous system, hormones, and immune response.

Love Is Also Bioenergetic Medicine

Research on heart coherence has shown that when a person experiences elevated emotions like love, connection, and inner peace, the heart enters a harmonious rhythm that improves:

• Cellular oxygenation

• Blood circulation

• Hormonal balance

• Immune function

• Metabolic energy

Simply put — love heals.

Frequency Therapy and Emotional Balance

At MedNatura, frequency-based therapies support the body’s natural self-regulation process. These frequencies help:

• Reduce physical and emotional inflammation

• Release energetic blockages

• Activate cellular regeneration

• Improve fatigue, stress, and anxiety

• Restore mind-body alignment

When the body enters healthy resonance, our ability to connect, communicate, and love also improves.

Self-Love: The Highest Healing Frequency

There is no stable external love without internal self-care. Conscious nutrition, cellular hydration, energetic therapy, detox support, and deep rest all raise the body’s vibration.

At MedNatura, we promote self-love as preventive medicine. When people learn to care for themselves, their relationships, emotional health, and quality of life naturally improve.

Give the Gift of Wellness This Valentine’s Season

This February, go beyond material gifts. Offer health, vitality, balance, and renewal. A frequency session, regenerative therapy, or personalized wellness protocol can transform not only the body — but the emotional state as well.

Because when you elevate your frequency… You elevate your life.

Weighing the Evidence: What an Expert Has to Say

About GLP-1 Medications

The buzz around weight loss medications have been hard to ignore after gaining popularity the last few years. Drugs like Ozempic—part of a class called GLP-1 agonists— were first approved to treat diabetes, but their ability to help people lose weight has led to widespread use for weight management.

Nutrition experts urge for patients to be extremely cautious. GLP-1 drugs work by helping you feel full longer, but this appetite suppression can sometimes mean skipping meals or missing out on essential nutrients. “Patients on GLP-1 medications need to ensure they’re getting enough protein, based on their weight and activity level,” says Registered Dietitian Peggy Rosales. She recommends a balanced diet rich in lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains like quinoa and oats.

Many patients who take GLP-1 medication simply eat less of the same foods they were used to eating before, and with rapid weight loss typically experience loose or sagging skin, along with a loss of muscle mass that can be anywhere from 20%-50%. Rosales emphasizes that pairing exercise with adequate protein is key to preserving muscle while losing weight. Staying hydrated is also important, she advises at least six to eight glasses daily.

Although GLP-1 medications have several health benefits like lowering risks of heart attack and stroke, improving blood sugar control, reducing appetite, and substantial weight loss, healthy nutrition and regular follow-ups with a medical professional are still necessary. Working with a dietitian can also help tailor meal plans to individual needs and ensure overall health. While these medications may curb cravings, Rosales stresses that building healthy habits is crucial for lasting results.

Finding a gym haven you truly love

All gyms are not created equal. I know as I have gotten older, I want to feel the love in my fitness space. In my 50’s, I want different gym features and services. In my 20’s and 30’s, I was fine with a standalone boxing gym, a specialty Pilates/ yoga studio, or a gym with great group fitness classes, a treadmill, and some weights. Today, I want much more than that. My body needs it. I love going to a place that offers everything in one location. Recovery is a critical element to our well-being. Activities like hot yoga, or infrared sauna rooms for Pilates or stretching, massage chairs, cryotherapies, plunge pools, hot tubs, and lap pools are a plus. Now, some gyms even have skilled stretching and massage therapists available to help you stay flexible or work out an injury.

The truth is, “gyms have evolved from a room full of machines to comprehensive fitness and wellness studios.” According to MedicalResearch.com , “in the past few decades, gyms have transformed from rudimentary weight rooms into complex facilities offering holistic health and fitness solutions. The modern gym is no longer just

place for bodybuilding or aerobic workouts; it has become a multifaceted environment that supports strength training, cardiovascular health, mental wellness, and lifestyle improvement.”

That is why I still cannot help but hold on to a few gym memberships which I just cannot seem to let go of. I love all the activities offered at Lifetime Fitness. But it is pricey and they do not have infrared sauna workouts, so I am also a member at Hotworx. Lifetime also does not offer Hyrox type training, so I have a yearlong membership that I have not quite started at Soul Fitness. And, lastly, I just joined as a fitness trainer at District Flex gym. It is a locally owned gym with all the machines, but they offer a wide range of recovery-focused programs aimed at helping improve movement, reduce pain, and support whole-body wellness. Other services include corrective exercise, hot and cold therapies, compression, cupping, and massage therapy. And they are expanding to offer spaces for Hyrox specific training.

In the photo I included for this article, you can see District Flex Co-owner, Marcos Hernandez, using a Graston metal tool technique to find the knots in my tight shoulder. He applies pressure to release them, promote circulation and healing so I can stay active. His background is in physical therapy, strength, and conditioning. What do you look for in a gym? District Flex is an exciting new fitness space for me that my clients love. It is not just a gym, it is an all-around holistic wellness hub with comprehensive fitness programs that cater to diverse fitness goals, personalized user experiences, and community engagement. If you are curious about District Flex, reach out to me and maybe it can become your new lifestyle destination to connect, share, and grow with like-minded people. You can find me on Instagram at sarahlucerofitness and District Flex at districtflex.

SELF LOVE

Self-Love – a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. It’s having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. It means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others and not settling for less than you deserve. Self-Love is self-respect and discipline. When you respect yourself you respect your body and you take care of it through exercise, proper nutrition and supplementation. After all, you have one body for one lifetime and it has to carry you through the entire journey called life.

I’ve had people say, “Oh well I’m going to die anyway.” My response is always this: Do you want to life a high-quality life, maintaining mobility as you age, or a low quality life filled with joint pain and immobility? Yes we are all going to die, but why rush to get there?

I constantly remind my patients and clients that health is wealth. Without health, there is no wealth. A body in motion stays in motion. You are your greatest investment. Investing in your health is not an expense but an investment. Investing in your health is not an expense, it’s an investment. You will pay either through movement and healthy habits, or later through pharmaceuticals and medical bills. So why not invest in your health now?

Working in the medical field and witnessing so much illness and disease has kept me humble and grateful, never taking my health for granted. I’ve learned that patients who were active in their younger years recover faster and tolerate pain better in their later years than those who were sedentary. Being athlete since my teenage years has

allowed me to maintain a healthy lifestyle well into my sixties. I continue to prioritize proper nutrition, supplementation, resistance training, and Pilates because staying strong and health allows me to keep serving others through my business and my work as a therapist – Physical Therapy.

Are you ready to change your lifestyle and invest in yourself, but don’t know where to start? I’m here to guide your every step of the way.

For a limited time, I’m offering two services for the price of one on all programs, unless you have a specific condition or require a customized plan.

Let’s get you started on your journey to better health.

It is no secret that distracted driving is a major concern while on the road. It goes without saying that the main culprit of distracted driving is —phones. People are constantly looking at their phones, even while driving. Even if they are using them for legitimate purposes, like directions, people often take their eyes off the road to view them. While driving, the slightest distraction from the road in front of you can result in a major collision, with property or other vehicles. Some studies indicate that, due to longer reaction times, distracted driving is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. As a result, we are seeing more and more rear end accidents. Many can have minimal impact, but some can be catastrophic. Unfortunately, people tend to underestimate common low impact auto collisions. Here are five reasons they are underestimated:

Low Property Damage

As you can expect, with a minimal impact collision, the property damage can be relatively low. Sometimes, due to the durability

of many modern cars, there may not even be visible damage. People tend to think that if there is little or no damage, then the impact must not have risen to the level that they suffered any significant injury. This is the wrong position to take. Even minimal impact collisions can result in serious, sometimes permanent, injuries to the neck, back, and head. Often the property damage to the vehicles lies underneath the bumper cover, masking the seriousness of the impact. The best practice is to visit a medical facility as soon as practicable or call an ambulance. Sure, it can be an inconvenience that you were not planning on, but when it comes to your health, you are better off being safe than sorry.

No Visible Injuries

In addition to no visible property damage, there are often no visible injuries. No blood, no broken bones. By no means, does that mean you are not injured. More often than not, injuries are not immediately apparent. Serious neck, back and head injuries are not visible. Do not use it as your standard as to whether you are injured, whether there is visible blood or a broken bone.

Delayed Symptoms

The type of injuries common to these types of crashes are often delayed. Meaning, it may take days before you realize you have a severe injury. Everyone expects a certain level of soreness after an accident, but many times that soreness is a sign of a more severe injury. You could have a herniated or slipped disc in your spine, or a traumatic brain injury whose symptoms were are immediately apparent.

Insurance Minimization

Many people want to get the incident behind them as quickly as possible and move on. They want their car fixed or replaced, and they want to be back to their normal routine. Insurance companies know this and immediately want to push the case to a resolution. They often minimize the collision, get plaintiffs to accept some responsibility even if they were not at fault, and minimize their injuries. Oftentimes they convince plaintiffs to minimize injuries they do not even know they have. Do not succumb to the pressure to get the insurance part over with and move on. There are plenty of quality car crash attorneys to contact. Most, if not all, work on a contingency basis. Meaning you do not have to pay attorney’s fees if they do not recover.

Pressure to “Walk it Off”

This author thinks the biggest reason rear end accidents are underestimated is because people feel pressure to “walk it off.” Many people do not want to admit that they are in pain or have symptoms of something more serious. For some, they just do not like going to hospitals, for others they may want to feel like they are tough and can handle anything. This is no time to be a tough guy or gal who wants to show everyone their threshold for pain. Accept the fact that you really do not know how injured you are until you visit a medical professional.

If you have hands free Bluetooth in your car, like most modern cars have, use it. Do anything you can to reduce the temptation to take your eyes off the road, even if for a second. And if you find yourself the victim of a rear end collision, do not make the mistake that many people do in this situation and underestimate the impact of the crash.

Counting Crows - A Look

Back at August and Everything After

It may not seem like it, but Counting Crows have been playing and making music for over 30 years. They are not for everyone, but those with whom their music connects tend to be lifelong fans.

Their first album, August and Everything After, was released in September of 1993. It was their most popular album (8 million in sales) and most critically acclaimed. The entire album has many great songs that even today seem to have only gotten better. Songs like Round Here, Omaha, Perfect Blue Buildings, Anna Begins, Raining in Baltimore, and A Murder of One come to mind. Interestingly, Counting Crows seem to be most known for their single from this album— Mr. Jones. Not only because it is a catchy song, but also from the music video which seemed to be shown non-stop during the MTV days of the 90s. Their success is notable because it came at the height of the grunge movement, with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam commanding the attention of youth across the country.

Ironically Mr. Jones is a song about becoming a rock star, before Adam Duritz, the lead

singer, became someone of a rock (or pop) star himself, and the mentality that doing so will make you happy. With references to Picasso and a grey guitar, Duritz famously sings “when everybody loves me, I will never be lonely.” In the video, Duritz is dancing around on the tv with his signature dreadlocks, sarcastically singing this song about the absurdity of the drive to become a rock star.

It is unfortunate that this single is how most people have come to know Counting Crows. Mr. Jones was probably my least favorite Crows song. In fact, it has a significant contrast from the rest of the album. I cannot help but think some executives pushed it as the single just because they felt that it would have the widest appeal and generate the highest revenue. The rest of August is in my opinion, one of the best albums to come out of the 90s. Duritz, the artistic driver of the band, is an excellent songwriter, with a voice particularly suitable for the type of music the band created. Music that they themselves would admit is somewhat depressing and melancholy. Duitz, who has openly discussed his difficult mental illness (dissociative disorder), is poetic in his depiction of loneliness, heartbreak, and hope. His voice, like many great artists and musicians, seems to give a personal account of his own life.

I had a chance to see them perform at City Coliseum in Austin back in 1997, just under 30 years ago. I was not really into the band, but a friend of mine asked me if I would come along. I remember being impressed with their ability to pull you into the emotion of each song. I did not want to like them but quickly respected and appreciated their music. It turns out, over the years, Duritz developed a strong connection to the city of Austin, co-producing the Outlaw Roadshow music festival, and developing both music and personal relationships there. He frequently visited the annual South by Southwest Music Festival. I remember seeing him at a show at South by Southwest in 2012 somewhere near the old La Zona Rosa music venue.

When I saw Counting Crows at the Majestic back in August, it was somewhat of a reality check on how much time has passed. It really does seem like yesterday that I saw them at City Coliseum. In reality it

has been almost 30 years. Duritz, who had gained a reputation for dating celebrities over the years, still sounded great, although it appeared he couldn’t hit some of the high notes he once could. Regardless, the emotional connection, and the passion for the music was still very much there. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them perform, not only for the music but also to be taken back to that period in time when I first came to appreciate their music. Although they have released several albums since that first one in 1993, August will always be one of their great ones in my opinion. Highlight songs for me were Mr. Jones, Omaha, Round Here (which segued into Raining in Baltimore), A Long December, and Holiday in Spain (their last song).

DISNEY IS THE MAGICAL PLACE ON EARTH

Visiting Disneyworld for the 50th Anniversary was truly a dream come true. From the moment I stepped onto Main Street, the air was filled with excitement and anticipation. Children and adults alike were swept up in the magic—smiles everywhere, laughter echoing, and the iconic Cinderella Castle shimmering in the distance. Weather Surprises and Adaptation

I arrived in Orlando expecting the usual Florida warmth, packing only shorts, flip flops, and tank tops. To my surprise, a cold front swept through, bringing rain and chilly winds. I found myself shivering as I walked through the parks, and had to dash into a gift shop for emergency warm-ups—a cozy Disney sweatshirt, a raincoat emblazoned with Mickey Mouse, and some fluffy socks. Despite the unexpected weather, the experience felt even more magical; the misty air gave the castle a fairytale glow, and the rain made the colors of the parade floats pop.

Park Adventures and Favorite Moments

During my eight days in Orlando, I explored Epcot Center, Magic Kingdom Park, and Universal Studio. At Epcot, I marveled at the futuristic architecture and sampled international cuisine at the World Showcase. Magic Kingdom was pure enchantment—meeting beloved characters, watching fireworks light up the night sky, and riding classics like Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean. Universal Studio offered a different thrill, with adrenaline-pumping rides and immersive attractions like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I found myself drawn to the more adult-oriented experiences there, enjoying gourmet meals and browsing unique shops. Food, Accommodations, and Relaxation

Every day was a culinary adventure. From Mickey-shaped waffles at breakfast to gourmet dinners at themed restaurants, I indulged in delicious treats. My stay at Marriott’s Grande Vista was equally memorable—the room overlooked a lush golf course, and each morning I enjoyed coffee on the balcony, watching the sunrise over the fairways. Even on the coldest

days, the view was breathtaking, and the hotel’s amenities made it easy to unwind after long hours in the parks.

Special Celebrations and Reflections

This year, Disneyworld’s festivities coincided with the 250th Anniversary of the United States, adding a sense of history and celebration to the trip. Parades and shows featured patriotic themes, and the parks were adorned with special decorations. I felt a sense of unity and joy, surrounded by families from all over the country, all sharing in the magic.

Travel Tips and Recommendations

If you’re planning a Disney adventure, I highly recommend booking through a travel agency like SiLis Travel, (silistravel.com)They offer personalized service, installment plans, and access to exclusive discounts. Using a travel agent made my trip stress-free—their expertise ensured I got the best deals and experiences, and their commission was covered by the supplier,

not YOU.

Final Thoughts

Disneyworld truly is a place where dreams come alive, no matter your age. Whether you’re braving unexpected weather, indulging in fantastic food, or reliving childhood memories, every moment is filled with wonder. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “ALWAYS DO WHAT YOU ARE AFRAID TO DO.” My trip reminded me to embrace adventure, step out of my comfort zone, and savor the magic in every experience.
