Design Matters explores fashion and the sustainable aspects of it, mainly design consciousness where designers know consumers expect and want their products to have a longer life cycle. Less-is-more is the point of this trend where craftmanship and quality are key with the use of premium fabrics and tailored silhouettes. The trend shows how “workwear becomes premium (WGSN, 2016) where classic silhouettes for work are remade using premium fabrics. With sustainability being a key aspect of the trend, the fabric will be durable and of high quality so that the garments have a longer life span. Aspects of the 1950s also play a role in this trend where it influences details such as trims and fastenings as well as using fabrics with a retro appeal but are actually modern (WGSN, 2016). Fabrics such as tweed, clean leathers, rubberised fabrics are contrasted against the tailored wools, cottons and corduroys (WGSN, 2016). The colour palette has a range of colours with hints of retro 1950s such as blues, pinks and lime greens with browns, greys and deep teal showing the tradiotional workwear aspect of the trend.

Nature is the main focal point of the trend Earthed where it is a “desire to connect with it in a more direct way” (WGSN, 2016). In this trend outdoor clothing is seen with urban streetwear as well as tailoring which creates a very versatile collection. Layering is featured a lot in the trend as each garment is lightweight so allows different tectires and a “rugged mix-and-match sensibility”. This is created by the fabrics being very contrasting in , with richer pile fabrics, brushed and blurred checks. Furthermore Earthed is also inspired by the military with details consisting of bellows pockets, heavy zips and woven patches. Wool, faux furs and heavy knits are a common aspect of the trend as well as light shell-type parka jackets and cotton canvas used for military styled clothes.

Nocturn focuses on the positive perspective of darkness, where “night becomes a time of increased energy” (WGSN, 2016). The apparel has many forms in this trend where day clothing is changed to be more apporpriate for the nighttime in terms of “functional casualwear bleanding into darkness” (WGSN, 2016) and nigthwear such as pyjamas are tailored to daywear silhouettes. The trend focuses on the younger market with the sense of a street style look with a contrast of the tailored, sophisticated textured aspects of the garments (WGSN, 2016). The materials used for the collection include luxe fabrics like silks and jacquards for the nightwear clothing and velvets supple suedes and leathers are also included in the trend. The colour palette is consists of mainly dark with dark blues, violets and green which are contrasted with “vivid blue, traffic light red and citrine green” (WGSN, 2016).

POST-FAITH Designers and creaters are making strong references to ‘taboos and religios iconography in relation to this trend, (Szymanska, 2015). Post-faith explores the symbolism of spiritual items to create new aesthetics that is ’humble but dramatic’ (Szymanska, 2015). The silhouettes of this trend is oversized loose withof tight tops explore the richand symbolism spiritual against fabric shaoes that are iconography to create a new aesthetic oversized, where a main decorative that is unorthodox and stitching subversive. technique is thick (Szymanska, 2015). The colour palette for post-faith focuses mainly on pale shades of greys and blues as well as hints of red, white and black (Szymanska, 2015), which were colours worn by the clergy to show the ‘different stages of the liturgical year’ (Szymanska, 2015).

inspiration

Rivers and lakes are the main aspect of this trend where inspiration has come from the movement of the water as well as the calming effect that they have. The trend will have a very relaxed feel due to the peaceful feel it envoques. To contrast this peaceful look, certain aspects of the designs will be more harsh with the idea of heavy flowing water and waterfalls. The silhouettes to represent this will be loose and not structured with some details having heavy drapes, such as using a waterfall effect on jackets. Layering will play a large part of this trend to represent the depth of rivers and lakes which helps to meet the required needs of Autumn/Winter garments. Colours will be quite neutral with hints of green and browns making an appearance and blue being a key colour.

Colour palette

The colour palette for this trend will be mainly neutral with creams and beiges to portray the calming effect of the lakes and rivers. The darker colours of greens, browns and blue will give the Autumn feel to the trend. Blue and cream will be the key colours for the trend with sky blue bringing a brighter look to the designs.

SILHOUETTES

The silhouettes for the trend are loose and relaxed which include a mixture of heavy and soft drapes. Waterfall draping will play a key part in the designs, mainly in the jackets to portray the waterfalls and loose aspects of the trend. Trousers will be cropped with raw hems as well as rolled up hems to give the relaxed look. They will be loose fitting and not tailored which will ensure comfort and elastic will be used at the waist. Collars for jackets and jumpers will be loose and overdramatic, with a lack of interfacing to keep them in place.
