Legacy League Seeks to “Remember, Rejoice, Renew” as We Celebrate 100 Years!
by Kathryn Woodruff
If you could celebrate a loved one’s 100th birthday, would you? Of course you would! Who would miss such a momentous occasion? Well, if you like a good celebration, then this is the year to participate in as many Legacy League “happenings” as possible. Why? Because every meeting and event will include something to help us celebrate our 100th anniversary!
DID YOU KNOW?
• Our scholarship endowment was started in 1988.
• Our first gala (now Scholarship Celebration) was held in April 2009.
• Our current name, Legacy League, and our crest were unveiled in Fall 2011.
• Two annual events began in 2011: Christmas Home Tour and Scholarship Luncheon
• The junior board was launched in Fall 2016.
• Over 225 students’ lives have been changed through our scholarships.
• Scholarships awarded to date are over $2.1 million.
Our theme this year is “ Remember, Rejoice, Renew.” Accordingly, President Jan Cobb has selected Psalm 100 as our scripture. It’s not a coincidence that Psalm 100 is appropriate for our 100 years. “One hundred years deserves joyful praise,” Jan said, “and that’s what this psalm is all about. God has been faithful in the past, and He promises to be faithful in the future. … Our only response is gratitude.”

This photo includes 15 Samford University Auxiliary leaders from 1954-55.

Legacy League’s roots can be traced to pre-Civil War efforts of Baptist women that led to the 1902 formation of the Howard College Cooperative Association. Successful projects carried out by this group eventually led to the formal founding of the Howard College Auxiliary in 1925 by 16 women. This group supported Howard College, and later Samford University, by providing landscaping and furnishings and meeting student needs as they arose. The auxiliary later began offering scholarships, then focused on scholarships for students with significant financial need and challenging circumstances, which is now our primary mission.
In preparation for this celebratory year, our leadership team and others have been looking through boxes of memorabilia, discovering numerous treasures from the past. These keepsakes will help us remember what and who have gone before us. A 100-year heritage is surely cause for us to rejoice in gratitude.
From Howard College Auxiliary to Samford University Auxiliary to Legacy League, we have come a long way. Some things have remained the same; many things have changed. We have sought to do God’s will in serving both our university and our scholarship recipients. Let us therefore remember and honor the past so that we can rejoice all year long and renew our commitment for the next 100 years!
Sophie Hudson Promises Joy and Inspiration as Fall Luncheon Speaker
by Frances King Abrams
Legacy League members and guests will not want to miss the first event of our centennial year – the Fall Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Vestavia Country Club. The event promises a plethora of laughter, spiritual insight, joy and hope from speaker Sophie “BooMama” Hudson. The author of seven books, a popular blogger and co-host of The Big Boo Cast, Sophie enjoys “laughing until she cries, cheering like crazy during college football games and hanging out with her people (preferably while wearing pajama pants).” Though she may not wear pajama pants to the luncheon, she is sure to bring her enthusiasm.
The luncheon, which launches Legacy League’s 100th anniversary celebration, will include a student testimonial as well
as several pop-up shoppes, recognition of 2024-25 volunteers and board members and the presentation of the 2025 Lolla Wright Award to Kimeran Stevens. The student testimonial will remind attendees of our mission as we celebrate 100 years and anticipate what the Lord has in store for the next 100 years. There will be opportunities to learn more about the history, mission and impact of Legacy League as well.

Sophie hopes her stories will share encouragement through the everyday, joy-filled moments of life. She speaks regularly to groups across the country and has co-hosted a podcast with Melanie Shankle since 2007. Authors and speakers have acclaimed her books. Kelly Minter said, “Sophie’s writing is that warm, worn blanket that reminds us of what’s still right in the world.” Kelly Stamps shares, “Sophie Hudson has a way of writing that brings you to tears from laughing out loud as well as putting tears in your eyes from the nostalgia of it all.” Sophie’s most recent book is A Fine Sight to See: Leading Because You Were Made for It
A graduate of Mississippi State University, Sophie loves any live sporting event and any chance to travel. She lives with her husband in Birmingham, Alabama, where their son is a Samford senior. Make reservations online at samford.edu/ legacyleague or return your completed reply

card by Sept. 18. Please reserve your spot early, as reservations will be accepted in the order received and limited capacity is available. On Sept. 25, doors will open at 10:45 a.m. to a carefully curated selection of pop-up shoppes. The program begins at 11:30 a.m.

It’s Year 15 for the Christmas Home Tour!
by Sharon Smith
This centennial year for the Legacy League brings another significant milestone – the 15th year of the Christmas Home Tour. This beloved community event, once just an idea (thanks, Lisbeth Cease!), has become a Birmingham tradition. Thousands of guests from multiple states have enjoyed the yuletide tour, which has showcased nearly 60 homes since its inception. With three gorgeous homes in Mountain Brook and two in Vestavia, this year will be no exception!
From fi rst year proceeds under $3000, the Christmas Home Tour has cumulatively raised nearly $500,000 – an impact for scholarships none imagined in 2011. “Many deserving students are provided scholarships thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, guests and volunteers,” said Chair Sheila Smith. “It’s always our goal for our guests to experience the joy of Christmas while knowing they are sharing a gift of love with our students.”
Over the years, the home tour has undergone lots of changes to keep it fresh, enjoyable, manageable and effective in supporting our mission. This year guests will delight in visits to fi ve featured homes, each uniquely designed, beautifully

decorated and festively adorned inside and out. Rather than being included on the tour, the Samford President’s Home will host a celebratory new event honoring our generous sponsors and homeowners. Tour guests will enjoy holiday treats in the form of “party favors” at featured homes. Visit your favorite pop-up shoppes at our Fall Luncheon and Scholarship Luncheon!
As our largest annual fundraiser, the Christmas Home Tour is also our largest volunteer opportunity! Over 100 home hosts are needed, in addition to the helpers needed for publicity and food packaging. Be sure the date – Thursday, December 11 – is inked in your calendar and go ahead and invite a friend to serve with you! Those who commit early enjoy early access to ticket purchases. Keep an eye out for details in our weekly emails this fall. Online tickets will be available in early November at samford.edu/legacyleague. Advance purchase is required.

Where Are They Now?
April Robinson: Courage to Pursue My Calling
by Sheri H. Ransome
April
Robinson embraced a call to ministry at age 17. A campus visit to Samford during Step Sing weekend her senior year of high school affi rmed this would be the ideal place to pursue her purpose-driven preparation. “Samford had a place for me to explore and become who God was calling me to be.” Through the blessing of scholarships, including a Samford Auxiliary (now Legacy League) scholarship, April experienced the fullness of Samford, including study abroad in London, the sisterhood of a sorority, serving as an orientation leader and leading student ministries as president her senior year. She credits spiritual mentors at Samford, Dr. Paul Basden and Brenda Sanders, with giving her courage to pursue her calling and be who she was created to be.
After eight years of ministry in North Carolina, April received an invitation from Dr. Jim Barnette to apply for a campus minister position at Samford. She has since served Samford for 25 years, paying forward the spiritual and vocational encouragement she received as a student. Her fi rst 18 years were spent as a campus
Volunteer Spotlight

minister, and now she serves as assistant vice president for student development and support, leading the work of both Samford CARES and the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement. Her passion for helping students fi nd their place at Samford to belong, to grow, to heal and to shine is rooted in gratitude for her own Samford experience and the difference it made in her life.
“I have spent over half of my life at Samford and have grown up here—personally and professionally. It’s a gift to come to campus day after day and reinvest what’s been given to me into others so they, too, might have the courage to pursue their callings and be who they are created to be.”
Ashley Seligson: Giving Back to Samford
by Laura Promer
Ashley Seligson is a proud Samford alumna with deep affection for the university and its Christcentered mission. She majored in business administration and serves as executive director of Little Hands Serving Hearts, a nonprofit that empowers children and families to make a difference through hands-on service projects.
Q:
How did you first get involved with the Legacy League?
A: I got involved some years back after learning about the transformational impact LL has on students through scholarships and support. Attending an event reminded me why I fell in love with Samford in the fi rst place—the sense of community, purpose and genuine care. It was a natural fit to plug in and give back to a place that has meant so much to me.
Q:
How have you been impacted by volunteering with the Legacy League?
A: Volunteering has been such a gift. It’s an opportunity not only to support current students but also to walk alongside them, encourage them and show them they’re surrounded by a community that believes in their potential. I especially love the student dinners—those moments of connection and fellowship are

truly special. Hearing their stories and dreams reaffi rms why this work matters. It’s incredibly fulfi lling to give back to these students and the university that helped shape me.
Q:
What highlights can you share from your recent areas of involvement with the Legacy League?
A: Some of the most meaningful highlights for me have been the student dinners. Sharing a meal, hearing their hearts and offering encouragement have created such rich and lasting connections. I've also loved being involved in events that bring people together who are passionate about service and faith. It's a blessing to link arms with others who want to make a generational difference in students’ lives—and I'm grateful to be a small part of that legacy.

Membership Meetings to Feature Samford “Family”
by Cynthia Watts-Barrineau
Our 2025-26 membership meetings will feature special program guests who are part of the Samford family. The November and January meetings (yes, January!) will be held at the Samford President’s Home. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for refreshments with the program
Eric Ross
THURSDAY, NOV. 13

Just in time for holiday decorating, on Thursday, Nov. 13, Eric Ross, parent of a current Samford student, will share his passion for traditional design with a Southern flair. During his 25+ years of experience, his work has been published in Traditional Home, Southern Lady, The Cottage Journal and elsewhere. Although he and his wife and business partner, Ruthann, live in Nashville, their work has taken them across the country. Eric draws from classic traditions while listening to the contemporary wishes of today’s homeowners. He believes a home should be a place where the residents feel their best. He pays close attention to detail while focusing on beauty, functionality and value. His new book, Embracing Southern Homes, will be available at the meeting.
beginning at 11:15 a.m. In March we’ll have an afternoon meeting (yes, afternoon!) in beautiful Brock Recital Hall on campus. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. with the program beginning at 1:45 p.m. Refreshments and fellowship will follow.
Kay DeKalb Smith
THURSDAY, JAN. 22

Beginning 2026 with a smile, Samford alumna Kay DeKalb Smith will bring laughter, music and inspiration to our Jan. 22 meeting. Billy Graham Crusade guest, Miss Birmingham 1973, recording artist, writer and mother of a Samford alumna, Kay has been dubbed the “Carol Burnett of Christian Entertainment.” Raised in Hartselle, Alabama, she began speaking at age 16 and has never stopped. We may learn about her chasing her daughter with a fly swatter or the smoke alarm sounding to let her family know supper is ready. She is known as “Auntie Kay” to Christian recording artists Rebecca St. James and siblings (For King + Country) for ministering to their family. Kay was portrayed by Candace Cameron Bure in the 2024 movie Unsung Hero
We have three membership meetings planned this year. Be sure to note these schedule changes!
• We will have a membership meeting in January instead of April.
• Our March meeting will be in the afternoon, not morning, on campus.
Joel Davis & Samford Arts Faculty
THURSDAY, MAR. 5

Perfect for the Lenten season, our March 5 on-campus afternoon meeting will feature a worshipful music program by School of the Arts faculty and staff members. In a “full circle moment,” the program will be led by former Samford Auxiliary (now Legacy League) scholarship recipient Dr. Joel Davis ’05, who now serves as the Division of Music chair. The talented members of the division, which includes eight departments, are known across the U.S. for their musical performance and teaching abilities. A composer, arranger, instrumentalist and conductor, Joel has performed with many artists including David Phelps and Yolanda Adams. He received Samford’s John H. Buchanan Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching in 2019.
Carrying the Mission Forward: Junior Board Update
by Lane Henderson
Meg Donovan ’19 serves as president of the Legacy League junior board, the leadership group for members under age 40. While Meg joined the Legacy League in 2019, her connection began during her time as a student and Samford Ambassador. “The Legacy League’s mission resonated with me, and upon graduation, I became involved to stay connected to Samford, serve others and give back to the university that impacted me in life-changing ways.”
Under Meg’s leadership, the junior board has strengthened the Legacy League’s junior member community, furthered the mission and positively impacted scholarship recipients. Last year they hosted several restaurant fundraiser nights, the annual Holiday Fundraiser and a new spring event, “Tips for Tiles: An Introduction to Mahjong”, their largest fundraiser yet.
When Meg isn’t volunteering with the Legacy League, she is likely spending quality time with her husband, Robert ’19, and their twin daughters, Annie and
Hallie, born in January. The Donovan girls, along with several other recent additions to junior board families, have already made their first appearance at a restaurant night. The unique life season of junior members, marked by early adulthood, marriage and growing families, brings fresh energy that helps plant seeds of lasting service in the next generation.
The junior board values its connection to the larger Legacy League community, encouraging members of all ages to attend events and invite others to join the mission.
“The LLJB is a special community. I am a firm believer that as you invest in this group and organization, you not only see the fruits in helping students, but you also see it impacting your life in positive ways,” Meg shared.
As the junior board steps into the Legacy League’s centennial year, they remain focused on deepening impact and carrying the mission forward with purpose. Support their efforts by attending LL nights at local restaurants and ordering from the Holiday Fundraiser.

Legacy League Celebrates Great Things God Has Done
by Barbara Patton
Asold-outcrowd of nearly 250 gathered the evening of April 24 at Covenant Presbyterian Church for a spectacular occasion. The 16th annual Scholarship Celebration began with pre-dinner fellowship, followed by an amazing meal presented by Samford Dining by Aramark. President Karen Carlisle kicked off the evening welcoming members and guests and opening with prayer. The celebration continued with recognition of those who helped make the evening possible:
· sponsors, whose donations totaled over $86,000, the highest ever for this event (see photos on page 15)
· the Scholarship Celebration Committee, co-chaired by Paula and Kerry Gossett
· over 35 other Legacy League volunteers and 16 Samford Ambassadors
Executive Director Julie Taylor reminded us that while it is good to gather for a delicious dinner, warm fellowship and delightful entertainment, our greater purpose is to live out the instructions of Isaiah 12:4-5. That is, “give thanks to the Lord and make His name known… because He has done great things” and do so with hearts that acknowledge all good gifts come from God, not from ourselves.
The Lord has indeed done great things – evidenced by Julie’s announcement that the LL awarded over $330,000 in scholarships for the year and raised $451,267.33 for future scholarships, a number excitedly unveiled by the event committee. Thanks to generous donors, that figure continued to grow through June.
Graduating seniors Brizza, Cedric, Ellie, Grant and Praise were recognized. A touching video shared Cedric’s testimony of God providing a way, through the Legacy League, for him to overcome hardships and become the fi rst college graduate in his family.
Managing Director Sharon Smith announced the new Wings for Shelter Scholarship and the new Brandon Booker Fund for Legacy League Student Support. Julie Taylor unveiled “Remember, Rejoice, Renew” as the theme for the Legacy
League’s centennial celebration launching this fall.
The festive evening continued as attendees moved to the sanctuary to enjoy medleys from the 1980s, 1970s and 1960s by gifted pianist and Samford alum Jon Michael Ogletree. This journey along memory lane, commemorating the music of yesteryear, concluded with a medley of hymns and worship songs.

Not only was Jon Michael’s music delightful and entertaining, his comments were impactful as well. Laced with humor and faith, he shared his Samford story highlighting the influence the university has been in his life. Leaving the audience inspired to serve and give, Jon Michael explained how Samford affi rms the Christian mission while nurturing students with a robust education that ultimately cultivates a gospel-centered life.
We are so grateful to all involved in making this event a success. Its impact will be felt for years to come through lifechanging scholarships, allowing students to follow their hearts to Samford and receive practical support from a caring community while here.

Stroke Survivor Katherine Wolf ’04 to Speak at Scholarship Luncheon
by Rhonda Cantelow
As we celebrate 100 years of the Legacy League, we are excited to have former scholarship recipient Katherine (Arnold) Wolf as our 2026 Scholarship Luncheon speaker. After graduating from Samford in 2004, Katherine and her husband, Jay, also a Samford grad, moved to Los Angeles where Jay attended law school and Katherine pursued her dreams of acting and modeling. Their lives, however, took a drastic turn as Katherine, at just 26 years old, suffered a catastrophic stroke, one that doctors did not believe she would survive.
After 16 hours of brain surgery, 40 days in intensive care and years of therapy to help her re-learn how to talk, walk and swallow, Katherine began to navigate a life much different than the one she imagined. Yet it has become a life that has made a profound difference to so many people.
Along with her husband, Katherine has taken seemingly insurmountable circumstances and birthed a
ministry that both inspires and advocates. Their ministry, Hope Heals, encourages and supports people experiencing disabilities by creating sacred spaces through camps, retreats and their MEND Coffee and Goods shop in Atlanta. Katherine says, “We’ve all got burdens. We can’t heal alone. God made us to need each other.”
Through speaking engagements, her podcast (The Good Hard Story) and her books, Katherine ministers to those who are suffering from “broken bodies, broken brains and broken hearts.” Pastor and author Louie Giglio put it this way: “Not only is Katherine Wolf an incredible communicator, but she is a picture of what it looks like to use the most difficult moments of your life to glorify God.”
PREMIUM SPONSORS

The Scholarship Luncheon will take place on Thursday, Feb.19, 2026, at The Club. Doors and pop-up shoppes will open at 10:45 a.m. and the luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Largest Gift in LL History Takes Us Halfway to Our Goal for Student Support Funds
by Sharon Smith
Brandon David Booker’s family describes him as “a 6’6” gentle giant – a teddy bear of a fellow who had deep compassion for the needs of others and an insatiable appetite for learning.” His unexpected death at age 35 left them heartbroken yet committed to caring for others in ways that would honor Brandon’s life and continue his legacy of benevolence. In 2022 they created a Legacy League scholarship in his memory. Encouraged by the impact of our mission, his family then gave the largest gift in our history to establish the Brandon Booker Fund for Legacy League Student Support last August. “We wanted to take folks who could not go to college and offer them a hand in pursuing their dreams of college,” explained Brandon’s uncle, Taylor Beattie.
The new Brandon Booker Fund has taken us halfway to our goal of raising $1 million in endowed funds for student support. The purpose of these designated funds is to provide resources for our students that go beyond their generous scholarships, helping ensure they have what they need to get through, not just to Samford. An important part of this commitment is the addition of a part-time staff member focused on student support. This role, filled by Brandy Beaumont, has enhanced and expanded our support of our scholarship recipients, helping them thrive and
succeed at Samford.
To commemorate our centennial, we’re raising funds for the 100th Anniversary Student Care Fund to give “hands and feet” to the university’s Christian commitment and help meet tangible needs of our students. This new fund, in tandem with the Brandon Booker Fund, will provide practical support including:

• generous book stipends for our cohort students
• a new dorm fridge and microwave to each incoming freshmen in our cohort
• fees for our first-year students to attend the Freshmen Retreat with their class
• catered entrees for monthly Fellowship Suppers
• “Bulldog Bucks” for on-campus purchases
• grocery items
Your contribution to this important new fund, along with our 100th Anniversary Scholarship Fund, will undergird our mission for the next century of service!
Legacy League Annual Giving Societies
The names of Legacy League’s four giving societies are drawn from elements of the organization’s crest and represent its core purposes.
Legacy defines the purpose of the organization—to plant the financial seeds that will provide scholarships for Samford students today and for years to come.
The oak recalls the tradition of the Sherman Oak, named in honor of the college’s first president, and it represents the unbroken chain of teaching and learning that began in 1841.
The banner proclaims Deuteronomy 6:10–12, which reminds us that we are building on a strong foundation built by those before us.
The lamp represents the lighting of the lamp of knowledge through education.

A Century of Impact: Celebrating the Legacy
League's 100th Anniversary
by Julie Taylor
In1925, with the blessing of Howard College President Dr. John Dawson, 16 determined women gathered at Birmingham’s historic Tutwiler Hotel with a shared vision: to support the college through service and generous giving. Their commitment strengthened a vision that began with the college’s inception in 1841. Baptist women of Marion, AL played a vital role in the life and mission of the new college. Their efforts funded projects including replacing the science lab after a devastating fire and fencing and beautifying the campus grounds.
In the years that followed, their unwavering support responded to the college’s changing needs: caring for wounded soldiers when the college served as a Civil War hospital, outfitting the new East Lake campus in 1887, funding dormitory furniture and leading efforts to endow the college presidency in 1893. In 1902, they created the Howard College Cooperative, paving the way for the 1925 defining movement — the founding of the Howard College Auxiliary.
With the auxiliary’s first constitution stating “The membership of this organization shall consist of women interested in Howard College, patrons, teachers, alumnae, friends from the city and from the state at large. The dues shall be $1.00 a year,” they planted seeds of commitment and care that have grown into one of Samford University’s most cherished organizations — Legacy League. The organization has flourished for a century, transforming countless lives through dedicated service and generous giving.
Our 100th anniversary theme, “Remember, Rejoice, Renew,” and scripture, Psalm 100, call us to reflect with gratitude and look ahead with purpose. The psalm begins with an invitation: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:1–2, ESV). This spirit of glad-hearted service has shaped our mission from the very beginning.
Remember: Honoring a Legacy of Faithful Service
As we “remember,” we honor the faithfulness of the Lord and those who first believed in the power of community, faith and education. The auxiliary’s founding members didn’t just organize events or raise funds—they embodied a culture of compassion and stewardship that has defined the organization for generations. Their work reminds us that legacies are built on bold visions followed by faithful acts of service offered consistently over time.
Rejoice: Celebrating Transformed Lives
As we “rejoice,” we recognize the many lives touched through a century of generous outreach. Over the years, Legacy League scholarships have offered more than academic opportunity—they affirm dignity, hope and the sustaining love of God. As we rejoice in this centennial milestone, we celebrate the organization’s exponential impact on Samford, individuals, families, communities and the kingdom of God.
Renew: Carrying the Vision Forward

As we “renew,” we look forward with intentionality and faith. The next chapter of the Legacy League’s story will require that we demonstrate the same attributes as the women of Marion, the Howard College Cooperative, the Howard College Auxiliary and the Samford Auxiliary: innovation, fresh leadership and deeper engagement with the evolving needs of students. The foundation has been established; the stage has been set. We are being invited to serve with the same spirit as those 16 women at the Tutwiler Hotel—committed to supporting Christcentered education, building community and honoring God in all things. By renewing our commitment, we proclaim the promise “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100:5, ESV)
The 100th anniversary of the Legacy League is far more than a celebration of the past. It is a year to give thanks and recommit to a mission deeply rooted in faith and service. The Legacy League’s story is a testimony of God’s enduring goodness expressed through those who have served and given financially and those who have been blessed by that service and generosity. May this centennial year inspire us all to remember the past, rejoice in the present, and renew our dedication to a future filled with promise.
