Top Vatican Official Visits the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts The Rev. Stefano M. Cecchin, OFM, vice postulator of the Friars Minor was given a tour of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts on August 9, 2017 by SAMFA staff members Shaydee Watson & Blanca Hernandez. He was given a special behind the scenes look at the Museum’s permanent collection as well as the extensive collection of Spanish Colonial and Mexican religious art, which he took a special interest in analyzing. Fr. Cecchin was visiting San Angelo to research the validity of the tale of the Lady in Blue, also known as Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda, who the vatican is considering for Sainthood. Legend says that an apparition of Sor Maria appeared and brought Christianity to the Jumano Indians in the 1600 through a phenomenon known as bilocation. The reverend arrived in San Angelo on Friday August 4th, and was in the area through Aug. 10.

Recorrio el museo con miembros del personal del Museo, Shaydee Watson y Blanca Hernández. Se le dio una mirada especial detrás de las escenas de la colección permanente del Museo, así como la extensa colección de arte colonial española y arte religiosa mexicana, que él tomó un interés especial en analizar. Fr. Cecchin visito San Angelo para investigar la validez de la Dama de Azul, también conocida como Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda, que el Vaticano está considerando para la Santidad. La leyenda dice que una aparición de Sor Maria apareció y trajo el cristianismo a los indios Jumano en el 1600 a través de un fenómeno conocido como bilocación. El reverendo llegó a San Angelo el viernes 4 de agosto y estuvo en la área hasta el 10 de agosto.

Museum of Fine Arts and Goodfellow Air Force Base Implement STARBASE On August 11, 2017, Goodfellow Air Force Base and the community teamed up at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts to implement STARBASE, a Department of Defense youth program. STARBASE focuses on motivating students to explore STEM: science, technology, engineering and math. The Museum facilitate the program, which gives all SAISD 5th graders an opportunity to learn about STEM through hands-on experiential activities including using computers to design space stations, constructing and programming Lego EV3 robots, and exploring nanotechnology. “STARBASE Goodfellow is an amazing opportunity that will provide classes for about 1,200 kids total this academic year, the goal of our program is to motivate kids to explore STEM as they continue their education.“ said Tiffany Ellwanger, Starbase’s office manager.

Boardmember Spotlight Rodney Mayberry

Rodney Mayberry, along with his wife Beverly Mayberry are long time San Angelo residents who have been members of the Museum since 2002. Rodney is owner of R M Electrical, better known as Mayberry Electric. Having served on the museum’s board for nearly two years, he was unanimously selected as the new president of the board this past February. Recently, The Mayberrys represented San Angelo and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts when they had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. “The desire to impact culture that is in the hearts of most men is best played out in institutions like the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. Fortune has favored me and I find my experiences at the SAMFA have allowed the fulfillment of such endeavors in my life.” - Rodney Mayberry
