Homemade by Helen Food Truck Thrives in Front of Museum

Education Jumps for Joy with Junior Mentor Program SAMFA’s Jr. Mentor Program was kickstarted last summer. The idea was to have long-time SAMFA Kids continue as volunteers and mentors at the museum after they became too old to attend summer camps. The mentors spent the summers creating and leading gallery tours, making videos and activities for SAMFA’s Mommy and Me Blog, and even interviewed artists on film to create interpretation for July’s Exhibit Opening. In return SAMFA’s Education Staff trained them in speaking etiquette, docent training, and communication techniques that will help the mentors on many different levels. Jr. Mentors volunteered over 100 hours of their time last summer, and will donate an estimated 150 hours this summer.

Important New York Collection Donated to SAMFA

Assistant Director/Collections Manager Laura Huckaby recently traveled to New York to oversee the packing of a collection of ceramics donated to the museum by collector Edith Ehrlich. The collection includes the works of British and American ceramic “superstars” such as Dame Lucie Rie, David Leach, Peter Voulkos, and Robert Arneson. It also includes works by Canadian and Asian artists, and some historical Chinese pieces. Edith and her late husband, Dan, began collecting ceramics in the 1970’s, beginning with artists that they knew personally or encountered at craft fairs. Edith, who is a painter and ceramicist herself, says that she collects works that “have a soul,” that speak to her about the person who made it. When Edith and Dan began Laura visits with Edith Ehrlich in her home on Park Avenue Laura platica con Edith Ehrlich en su casa en Park Avenue looking for a home for their collection, they consulted noted ceramic scholar and author Ron Kuchta, who recommended 2 American museums, one of them being SAMFA! They visited both museums and chose ours. They wanted their collection to go somewhere it would be seen and appreciated, and they picked the right place.

The Ehrlich Collection will be exhibited at SAMFA October 5 through December 3 of this year, and selections will be permanently displayed in our McDevitt Visible Collections Storage Gallery. We are thrilled to bring this important collection here to San Angelo!

With ASU, Art of Nature Camp Combines Art & Science

Timothy, one of our educators, teaching our campers at ASU.

Art of Nature camp inspires kids to think of art in a new way. The camps combine science and nature with art techniques to give campers a unique and creative camp experience. Camp this year was centered around the Concho river and the natural history of local plants and animals. Local scientists, historians, naturalists, and artists have been invited to speak and give demonstrations. Dr. Zehnder, a chemistry professor from ASU, demonstrated how liquid nitrogen worked and Dr. Osborne, also from ASU, taught campers about the pH scale. In addition to guest speakers, campers learn to draw inspiration from nature and experiment with different mediums such as clay, oil pastel, and water color in order to complete art projects. The campers also spent time visiting Fort Concho, fishing and canoeing at the Concho River, and doing morning yoga by the Museum.

SAMFA’s Art of Nature campers spend their days doing Yoga, canoeing, and perfecting the art of fishing.

Progress on Oakes Street Project

Galleries on Oakes Street before renovation Galleries on Oakes Street after renovation Gallerías en calle Oakes antes de las renovaciones Gallerías en calle Oakes despues de las renovaciones

More than a decade ago, the Art Museum-led by former board president Angela Williams-began acquiring a block of old and derelict buildings, on the west side of the street in front of the Museum beginning with the former Sinclair Gas Station and ending at the foot of the Oakes Street bridge. At that time, most of the structures had nearly collapsed and were in a virtual state of ruin.

Today, all the roofs have been rebuilt, the facades have been restored and there is a beautifully landscaped streetscape. Two of the buildings are now vibrant community galleries: The Coop and Gallery Verde. Recently, because of a Cultural District grant from the Texas Commision on the Arts, we have moved a step closer to our broader vision. We have added air conditioning, new windows, and emergency egress areas to The Coop Gallery. The adjacent studio building has been largely rebuilt with a balcony area at the rear, and we are adding a wonderful office and graphic design area for the Cultural District and Museum. The general contractor for the project is Cross Country Construction. The museum also has been using its own crew for aspects of the project, led by Brandon Mansell, our facilities manager. Brandon is an artist who has specialized in glass blowing, and came from a family that owned a general contracting company. The team working with brandon is Bobby Watson, Jennipher Garrett, and Logan Brewer.
