October 27, 1790 This Day in Vermont History The town of Minden, Vermont changes its name to Craftsbury in order to honor one of the town founders, Ebenezer Crafts.

Crafts was born in Pomfret, Connecticut, studied Theology at Yale College and married Mehitable Chandler, the sister of famed painter Winthrop Chandler.

Crafts and his family moved to Vermont when they fell on hard times in 1788 and became the first settler in Orleans County. The town was granted not only to Crafts but to Timothy Newell and sixty-two other associates on November 6, 1780.

North Craftsbury, now known as Craftsbury Common, was the first area to be settled and served as an area of commerce and culture for the region as it also served many of the surrounding towns. The construction of mills of various types increased the town population further, prompting new settlements at Mill Village and East Craftsbury.

Craftsbury is home to some of the smallest educational institutions in the county such as Craftsbury Academy and Sterling College.

One can recognize the town from the Alfred Hitchcock film "The Trouble with Harry" which was shot entirely in town.
