Children in resource limited areas in Nigeria, Africa often suffer from severe burn injuries that result in unfortunate lifelong limitations, deformation of their bodies, and can sometimes lead to death. Due to the lack of financial aid, burn institutions do not have the proper resources to treat children in an appropriate manner. Children can experience long-term psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and difficulties with social functioning along with the horrific physical pains. This rehabilitation center aims to address these issues by creating an environment where children can heal properly both physically and mentally through biophilia, color theory, and control theory. This center will also provide a space for physicians and nurses to receive training on proper treatment methods.

RESEARCH

This logo draws inspiration from the banana leaf a native plant to Nigeria that has been used to wrap burn wounds in the past. The purpose of this logo is to instill trust into the parents who bring their children in for treatment. The facility is named Waraka which means healing in the native language of Nigeria, Hausa. This name further emphasizes the trustworthiness of the facility.

LOCATION

Lagos, Nigeria was the chosen location due to burn injuries being the fourth most common injury resulting in death (Oladele & Olabanji, 2010). The site that this burn center will reside in is in the center of a hospital training area. This gives medical staff who may not have been fully trained easy access to education, and opportunities for students to get early hands-on exposure.

This project is an emergency housing unit based in Somalia. This housing unit is designed to protect residents from severe droughts and provide a water filtration system that can filter impurities from sea water. The unit is made primarily of limestone which is abundant in the area and has natural cooling properties. The ceiling design is meant to trap heat at the top creating a cooler environment within the unit.

The project above is an immersive museum that explores the art work of Alexander Calder. The museum is an abstraction of the various forms of geometries that he used in his pieces. This room in particular studies the circles in 3D form. Calder used primary colors in his work which is highlighted through the glowing spheres. The black spheres are glossy to create a mirrored effect and an illusion. The pattern on the floor and ceiling is sharp to contrast the smooth edges of a sphere.

This class investigated the nature of the Digital Realm as an environment to advance & enhance the visualization of design concepts while presenting them in a graphically sophisticated fashion. The project above is a beginners Autocad exercise where we explored basic functions of the program. The project to the right is a section of a Dyson hair dryer also done in Autocad. This project was meant to fine tune our skills while exploring the inner workings of an everyday object.

This project aims to strengthen the unity of the Joppee community by preserving the essence of the site and focusing on the community’s health. The basketball court, health clinic, kitchen, food pantry, and dance studio are all amenities in which members can use to improve their health. The counseling office also invites community members to take care of their mental health, and the classrooms will help nurture the brains of the future generation of Joppee. The red and green color scheme compliment the red brick on the exterior of the building and the surrounding trees in the area. The overall design maintains most of the original forms and purposes, preserving the historic value of the site.
