Gabriel Joseph “Josh” Zephir, II, was born on November 18, 1991, at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in The Bronx, NY. Delivered via Cesarean section, Josh greeted the world with a smile that would later become one of his defining characteristics.
From an early age, Josh demonstrated remarkable milestones; he learned to walk at just nine months old and was fully toilet-trained by 18 months. His curiosity and enthusiasm for life became evident when, at the age of 3, he began violin lessons at Queens College after months of persistent requests
Josh’s passion for learning was apparent from a very young age, leading him to attend schools that nurtured his love for knowledge He began his educational journey at Merrick Woods Academy for Pre-K and Kindergarten, followed by Grace Day School. In first grade, Josh became a proud big brother to his sister Naëlle, and at just six years old, he declared himself her protector.
Josh also admired and shared a close bond with his older siblings, Nadgèle and Ricardo. While the relationship with each of his siblings was unique, the common thread was genuine care and affection, and each played a significant role in his life, especially as he got older
Midway through his second grade, Josh’s family relocated to South Florida, where he continued his education at American Heritage School However, the family’s journey did not end there After second grade, they moved to Haiti, where Josh attended Quisqueya Christian School. In Haiti, he formed a close bond with his cousins Carine, Dannou, Loulou, and Ross who quickly became like siblings to him During this time, Josh’s competitive spirit blossomed, particularly in video games, as he strove to outplay his cousins
Haiti also introduced Josh to new cultural experiences, like the popular local soda, Cola Couronne, which he fondly noted was “not Goya, but was good stuff.” More importantly, his time in Haiti deepened his compassion for others and instilled in him a profound sense of gratitude and generosity He learned to appreciate and share his received blessings with those in need. After four formative years in Haiti, Josh returned to the United States with his mother and Naëlle, where he attended University School, while his father commuted regularly between Haiti and the U S for work
At just 16 years old, Josh graduated from high school and achieved his dream of being admitted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he initially pursued Pre-Med studies. Despite his early maturity, the newfound freedom of college life proved challenging, and after switching majors several times, Josh returned home to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Marketing and a Master’s in Computer Science. However, his journey was far from over While completing his second Master’s degree in General Psychology, Josh experienced a profound realization he felt a deep calling to return to his original passion for medicine. This newfound clarity reignited his commitment to becoming a physician, leading him to complete the prerequisites for medical school, take the MCAT, and eventually be accepted into Flinders University in Australia Flinders was a perfect fit for Josh, combining his love for nature with his passion for learning. He often spoke fondly of the intellectual discussions he enjoyed with his peers and the serene walks from his dorm to campus
Summers were a special time for Josh, filled with family and adventure. Starting at age 18 months, he spent each summer with his Chicago family Tatie G, P.J., and his cousins Gregory, R gine, Valerie, Gino, Yves-Myr, Mickey, Merlyn, and Rachel This tradition continued every summer until he turned 15, creating memories that he cherished deeply.
From an early age, Josh’s life was marked by a series of moves each one to a place with its unique culture and challenges. These early experiences in South Florida, Haiti, Montreal, Chicago, and other locations laid the foundation for his later love of travel. Amidst these changes, Josh always looked forward to the annual family vacations, which became a cherished tradition and a constant in his everevolving world. His love for world cuisine was also cultivated during these years, especially through the flavors of Tatie Mimi's cooking, introducing him to the richness of Haitian cuisine and sparking his curiosity about other culinary traditions The frequent changes in his environment fostered his independence and adaptability and instilled a sense of adventure, wonder, and an appreciation for the world’s diversity.
Josh never shied away from new experiences; instead, he embraced them, seeing each new place as an opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, he prioritized connecting with far-flung family members across the globe, often extending himself for their special occasions and serving as an ambassador of sorts His outgoing and diplomatic nature, coupled with his ability to navigate the nuances and idiosyncrasies of family dynamics, strengthened the bonds within an already close-knit family.
Many may not have known about Josh’s deep humanitarian spirit He believed in giving quietly and selflessly, often ensuring that “what his left hand did, his right hand did not know.” His faith in God was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in all he did He exemplified humility, charity, and a life of service Josh was a devout Catholic, attending Mass seven days a week, and on weekdays, he would often find time to attend twice a day, even amid his busy schedule.
On August 24, 2024, Josh joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ His life, though short, was rich in love and faith, and reflected a deep commitment to making the world a better place. Josh’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
I love You, Lord. For Your mercy never fails me. All my days, I've been held in Your hands. From the moment that I wake up Until I lay my head Oh, I will sing of the Goodness of God
'Cause all my life You have been faithful. And all my life You have been so, so good. With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the Goodness of God
I love Your voice. You have led me through the fire. In darkest night You are close like no other.
I've known You as a Father I've known You as a Friend And I have lived in the Goodness of God.
Cause all my life You have been faithful. And all my life You have been so, so good. With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the Goodness of God.

A Reading from the Book of Wisdom (Wisdom 4:7-15)
The righteous one, though he dies early, shall be at rest For the Age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years Rather, understanding passes for gray hair, and an unsullied life is the attainment of old age.
The one who pleased God was loved, living among sinners, was transported, snatched away, lest wickedness pervert his mind, or deceit beguile his soul; for the witchery of paltry things obscures what is right and the whirl of desire transforms the innocent mind. Having become perfect in a short while, he reached the fullness of a long career; for his soul was pleasing to the LORD, therefore he sped him out of the midst of wickedness.
But the people saw and did not understand, nor did they take that consideration into account.

A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans (Romans 14:7-9; 10b-12)
Brothers and Sisters:
None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. We shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bend before me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.” So, then each of us shall give an account of himself to God.

According to John (John 14:1-6)
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be Where I am going you know the way. ” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ”

Tu sais, Tu m ’ as s duit un bon matin
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Sempiternam.
And I will raise you up, And I will raise you up. And I will raise you up on the last day
I am the bread of life You who come to Me shall not hunger. And who believe in Me shall not thirst No one can come to Me, Unless the Father beckons.
The bread that I will give, Is My flesh for the life of the world, And if you eat of this bread, You shall live forever, You shall live forever.
I am the resurrection, I am the life. If you believe in Me, Even though you die, You shall live forever
When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.
It is well, With my soul. It is well, It is well with my soul!
AMy sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
nd Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trumpet shall sound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul.
Ave Maria Schubert

Though your smile is gone forever, And your hand we can no longer touch, The warmth of your hugs, the depth of your compassion, And the patience you showed us all still linger in our hearts
Your beautiful soul radiated generosity, Especially towards the poor and those in need. This kindness was a true reflection of your love and faith in God, And your unwavering determination inspired us Through the toughest times.
As a role model, you showed us what it means To live with purpose, faith, and love, Always putting others before yourself.
