Understanding and Managing Conflicts of Interest (Resource contributed by Community Sector Coalition) This activity helps your group to understand about the different types of conflicts of interest that might arise within your group and how to manage them. Step 1 – What is a conflict of interest? Work in pairs or small groups to complete the ‘Conflicts of Interest’ quiz (Appendix 1). It describes a number of common situations that trustees and charity boards face and asks whether each situation is: • fine – it is acceptable to do this • a potential conflict of interest • only allowed with permission A separate download (Answer Sheet Part 1) contains the answers. When you have completed the quiz, check through the answers, discuss them and make sure you’re clear on the reasons for them. If there are any you are uncertain about, then use the references listed in Principle 5 ‘Activities and Resources’ to find out more. Step 2 – How do you manage conflicts of interest? Download the model Conflict of Interest policy from Principle 5 ‘Activities and Resources’. This explains that the key steps regarding conflicts of interest are to; • identify the conflict of interest • manage the conflict of interest • record how the conflict of interest was managed as well as the decision made Step 3 – Creating your own register of interests At the beginning of a Board meeting, ask everyone in the group to think about the examples that have already been discussed and ask them to identify any conflicts of interests that they have – write them on a post it note with their name on and stick it on a wall. Leave the post it notes during the meeting so people can add more they may remember. It also provides a chance for everyone to see them and perhaps prompt others if necessary. At the end of the meeting, ask someone to take the post it notes and write a register of interests. A template (including situations from the quiz as examples) is available as a separate download. The new register should be available for future meetings.
