INSIDE: ISSUE #14

Malta, meet San Francisco. She’s beautiful, spontaneous, open-minded and full of ideas for things to do. Keith Diplock discovered an original, one-of-a-kind home in this vibrant city, The McCarthy Residence by Natoma Architects, and talks to its architect Stanley Saitowitz. Interior designer Vera Sant Fournier shows us how to ‘Get the Look’ in Malta, while Christina Medici relives her experience in the city and gives us her tips for how to spend time there. Holly Knowles wanders around a luxurious Maltese home, designed by Maltese architect Daniel Scerri of Scerri Periti, while the chefs and owners at Jus Restaurant – Sean Xuereb Conti and Maria Sammut – cook us a delicious meal at Jus Restaurant. Vamp never shies away from fashion, and in this issue there are two photo shoots! One is by the talented photographic artist Elisa Von Brockdorff and the other by the Italian duo: photographer Federico Peltretti and extravagant stylist Fabio Ferri. Tamara Burr gives us some more glamorous make-up tips for summer, while our stylists are taped to the wall so we can take our time over their fashion tips for this summer in ‘Style Files’. We also see through the lens of René Rossignaud, who left his comfort zone to photograph war-torn places; explore the theories behind those mysterious lines in the sky; and enter the world of a transgender after years of research by Gilbert Calleja for his book Liminal. We look forward to seeing you at Earth Garden! Come and say ‘hi’ at our stand, supported by Tico Tico.

VAMP MAGAZINE UPDATE

ATELIER VIERKANT AT LOFT This year, Atelier Vierkant has introduced a series of monolithic forms and shapes that tend to fundamentally break the boundary between a spatial object and useful furniture. Straight, slanted and curved lines dominate the scene in which they are designed and where the void between the fired-clay forms defines the impact of the setting. Available on order. Available from Loft Triq San Pawl, Naxxar - Find us on FB: LOFT Malta

COORDONNÉ AT LOFT The rich architecture of Antoni Gaudi’s modernist Barcelona and the grand palaces of 11th Century Andalusia have provided the inspiration for this stunning new collection of wall coverings from Coordonné. Historical mosaic and tile designs are reproduced onto high quality nonwoven wall covering where the contrasting colours and textures can be fully appreciated. With this collection, Coordonné ventures into a mesmerising world where this style of design has, up until now, only been seen on materials such as ceramic, stone and clay. Thanks to the reproduction of these special designs as wall coverings, they can be enlarged and repeated across your walls endless times, creating a truly spectacular look.

Feminine and sensual EAU DE LACOSTE SENSUELLE accentuates an elegant but casual appearance, with a soft twist that is reminiscent of a joyful evening. Designed to recreate the feeling of transition from a sunlit day to a cool, refreshing evening, EAU DE LACOSTE SENSUELLE opens with sparkling top notes of vibrant pink pepper and juicy blackcurrant. As the sun sets, the elegant floral heart blends with the soft nougatine and a comforting amber base, resulting in a sensual fragrance which is perfect for the evening ahead.

Take the historical beauty of Spain into your home, with the Tiles Collection from Coordonné.

I

N THE LAST ISSUE I TRIED MY HAND AT DRESSING FELLOW STYLIST LUKE, WHICH WAS A LOT OF FUN. THIS TIME AROUND, IT’S HIS TURN TO TAKE THE HOLD OF THE REINS AND SHAKE UP MY LOOK. I’M MORE OF A DENIM-ANDTEE KIND OF GIRL AND SPEND MOST OF MY TIME IN FLATS, SO I WASN’T SURPRISED WHEN LUKE TOLD ME HE WAS GOING TO ‘UP’ THE GLAM FACTOR AND PULLED OUT A BODY-CON DRESS AND SKY-HIGH HEELS. IT’S ALWAYS A LAUGH, WORKING WITH LUKE, AND I LOVED FEELING GIRLY, STRONG AND POWERFUL. IT REMINDS ME OF THAT SAYING: “GIVE A WOMAN THE RIGHT PAIR OF SHOES AND SHE CAN RULE THE WORLD”!

OUT OF THE CLOSET THE BLINDING LIGHT T WORDS: KARL SCHEMBRI

he partying crowds in Palace Square on the night civil gay unions became a reality might have gained the spotlight for a while, as the “liberal”, “progressive” Malta embraced this new bold development. But one man’s intimate photographic journey into the transgender world reveals it to be a world fraught with paradox and contradiction; a space where identity is always fluid, in transition, and incredibly captivating for the onlooker.

Gilbert Calleja’s Liminal is a book that uncovers the Other through the lens of a curious photographer, and what he gets us to see is a fascinating underworld that has an eerily familiar feeling in its fine detail, like crucifixes and religious effigies in the bedroom of someone who becomes a drag queen by night. >>

OUT OF THE CLOSET

“AT “AT THE THE HEART HEART OF OF CALLEJA’S CALLEJA’S WORK WORK IS IS HIS HIS FIXATION FIXATION WITH WITH THE THE INTERPLAY INTERPLAY OF OF ICONS ICONS OF OF WORSHIP WORSHIP AND AND THOSE THOSE OF OF BLASPHEMOUS BLASPHEMOUS INTENT,” INTENT,” This is the fruit of years spent following transgender people, from home to work to their fantastic parties. True to his style, Calleja followed his subjects doggedly, just as he did with fishermen, dockyard workers and the parish priest visiting his dying parishioners in previous projects. And again, just like with his previous projects, he captures the spaces that his subjects inhabit, at leisure or at work, placing us somewhere between intruding voyeurs and privileged observers. Published by Ede Books, Calleja’s is a journey that takes us in and out of the familiar and the unfamiliar. It is the first document of its kind to come out of Malta, shedding light on the underground life of the transgender community, if there ever was one. As an observing outsider himself, who had to navigate through the sensitive and intricate paths of trust and acceptance in order to be able to embark on this project, Calleja’s lens takes us just around the corner, where we may have feared to tread. ‘Liminal’ is not so much a celebration of diversity as a frank introduction to the transgender world – less underground and much more mundane than we might think. In his seminal introductory essay, MaltaToday Online editor Matthew Vella describes the world of paradox and contradictions that Calleja himself admits he is unable to understand.: “At the heart of Calleja’s work is his fixation with the interplay of icons of worship and those of blasphemous intent,” Vella writes. “He may be unwilling to understand why so many of his subjects retain their Catholic faiths (faith may be even more important in the tribulation of having to negotiate a new sexual identity, and the hardships one encounters in an intolerant society): in his capture of ‘spaces for living’, he picked out the paraphernalia of belief – crucifixes, candles, saintly effigies, images – and then relished in capturing their mock desecration during the heady nights of gay and trans parties.” Calleja’s real agenda, Vella adds, is not the finality of sexual identity but that of capturing space where his characters live, away from the stereotypical confessions one might expect. “So he refuses to reduce his willing subjects to the ultimate signifiers of their anatomical ‘truth’: the absent phallic identifiers or tell-tale mastectomies are replaced by the physiognomic baggage of ‘gender past’. We see the clues in the residue of fresh stubble clinging to the ceramic of a basin before it is washed away, bulging Adam’s apples, muscular arms and veins and sagging male arses on a woman’s body, or the estrogenic fat that betrays a man’s feminine past.” Calleja made his own priority to avoid sensationalising his characters, informed by his own approach of documenting people from the margins of society. His job was to “look at these people as human beings – full stop”, he says. “My job was to document and present a fair and honest view. It’s easy to fall for clichés and stereotypes and lose sight of reality, but exaggerating or fabricating images is not my thing.” To do this, Calleja had to be “adopted” by his subjects, who are generally suspicious, cautious and closed because of Malta’s smallness. Throughout this process, he learnt the intricacies of transgender individuals negotiating their identities – like the 40-year-old man who instructed him to show up at his house only after 9 pm and then turned out to be the same person he knew as a woman, living with her aging parents. This book, which forms part of the Milkshake project – also conceived and managed by Calleja, gives an essential picture of another Malta that is dying to be seen and heard. However, as the book’s title so aptly suggests, it is also a reality that refuses to be shackled, grasped or tied down to one identity. V

BARE FOOT BEAUTIES STRUT THE LAWNS OF THE PRIME MINISTER’S SUMMER RESIDENCE AT PALACE GIRGENTI, ON THURSDAY, 8 MAY 2014, FOR SARTO’S SPRING/SUMMER 2014 GARDEN RUNWAY FASHION SHOW FEATURING BLUMARINE, DOLCE & GABBANA AND EMPORIO ARMANI. Photos & Words: Luke Engerer

Walking into Palace Girgenti felt as though I was stepping back in time at an old Italian wedding. Classical embellishments, traditional food and sounds-from-the-south perfectly blending into the surroundings of Girgenti. Vintage sophistication with a modern touch set the stage for the stunning collections from these three Italian Luxury brands.

Bluemarine

Dolce & Gabbana

The show opened with Blumarine: The collection embodies Bohemian attitude and a natural elegance. Wallpaper prints with coloured flowers on an ecru background, exalted by blue lagoon colour combinations and Art Nouveau inspiration for the patterns. Iris prints with abstract floral designs combined with green and chocolate with contemporary Boho graphics. From the flowing, floral, colourful Blumarine collection the show moved on to Emporio Armani for men. The look that is basic, pure, modern and visual. Graphic effects obtained with a high-definition technique offer playful geometric shapes on clothes, bags and shoes. The collection offered infinite shades of white, putty and ice with touches of Armani blue and teal green.

Dolce & Gabbana

Bluemarine

Dolce & Gabbana closed the show: The theme for the women’s collection is an imaginary journey to rediscover ancient Sicily, where history and mythology come together. The Greek temples and theatres, symbols of classic architectural perfection, are reinterpreted as if in a dream. As if a traveler, having visited some of the marvelous landscapes of ancient Sicily, wanted to re-create those unique settings in his mind: that type of beauty, magic and enchantment can only be found in such a vision. Only in an imaginary world can the unexpected and irrational intertwine with spontaneity and naturalness. The unforeseen is interlaced with spontaneity, creativity with the absurd, and dreams with reality. The Dolce & Gabbana men’s summer 2014 collection draws inspiration from Sicilian mythology, whose Greek origins are still re-traceable in places such as the Valle dei Templi of Agrigento, at the majestic amphitheatres, like the one at Taormina, and at the Tempio di Apollo of Syracuse. Creativity and tailoring research are the cornerstones of the collection, where the fantastical triumphs in the prints of antique gods such as those of Zeus and Apollo, whose effigies are present in the whole collection. TOP 10 MUST -SEES & DOS > FILLED WITH LANDMARKS SUCH AS THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, FISHERMAN’S WHARF AND ALCATRAZ, YOU WILL NEVER BE SHORT OF SOMETHING TO LOOK AT. 1. THE GREAT ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ Albeit a tourist trap, it’s hard to argue against visiting Al ‘Scarface’ Capone’s last known address. The infamous prison housed some of the most notorious gangsters of the 1930’s bringing a dark mystique to The Rock. Closed shortly after its first and only assumed successful escape in 1962 the island is now a sanctuary for marine life, wild flowers and possibly one of the most fantastic vantage points of San Francisco and its remarkable city skyline. 2. ‘PAINTED LADIES’ An intriguing district to explore is HaightAshbury or ‘Hashbury’ as the late Hunter S. Thomson labelled it. This once gloomy, battleship grey painted neighborhood was transformed in the early 1960’s following the opening of a Psychedelic Shop in the heart of town. A young experimental group began to immerge and Hashbury quickly became the epicenter of the hippie sub-culture. One can’t help but feel the good vibrations when walking beside these vibrant homes aptly named Painted Ladies. 3. PARK LIFE: GOLDEN GATE PARK A short bus ride from Haight-Ashbury along Fulton Street, notably the home of rock group Jefferson Airplane, is the Golden Gate Park. Winding paths lead you through the parade of extraordinary gardens ranging from The Japanese Tea Gardens to the Conservatory of Flowers- each a beautiful collection of rare and exotic plants. Occupying over 1,000 acres, this park rivals Central Park in New York and provides great respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Definitely a must picnic spot. 4. MISSION-DOLORES PARK If ogling at a flower isn’t your thing head over to ‘Dolores Park’ based in the heart of the uber hipster Mission District. At the first glimmer of sunshine the locals and their canine companions flock here to dance, read poetry, do yoga, and generally gallivant, usually in costume. The Mission District boasts some of San Francisco’s coolest bars and eateries, galleries and vintage boutiques. 5. ANTIQUES FAIR ON TREASURE ISLAND If you plan to visit in May add the ‘Treasure Island flee-market’ to your must-see list. Located on a tiny island tucked beneath the

San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, known locally as the Bay Bridge, is a treasure throve of art, antiques, jewellery and vintage clothing. Juxtaposed on this tiny island is a 40 foot steel sculpture of a dancing woman - Bliss-Dance, originally constructed for the cult Burning Man Festival in the Nevada Desert, 2010, by local artist Marco Cochrane. This sculpture was in need of restoration and thanks to donations Cochrane was able to weatherproof the sculpture ensuring she’ll still be there when you visit.

a Queen. Marvel at the panoramic views of San Francisco from one of the tallest peaks in town and enjoy a fabulous Broadway-style show. San Franciscans are a lot of things. They’re hippies, hipsters, artistic, techies, environmentalists and more. From my experience, they’re wonderful people, very literary and sociable, liberal minded, and progressive types with a laid back and peaceful demeanor. V

6. FOOD SPOTTING Formerly the ‘Culinary Capital’ of the U.S., San Francisco has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the country. It’s no surprise that half its visitors cite restaurants as a major motivator to visit. 7. FARMERS MARKETS Locally sourced produce from Farmers Markets is essential to the San Francisco dining ethos. The largest market is situated in the ‘Embarcadero’s’ ferry building (pictured) near Fisherman’s Wharf. It overlooks the famous ‘Pier 39’ known for its giant sea lions. 8. FAVOURITE DISHES AND GENRES Famed for its seafood, try the local favourite creamy clam chowder served inside a bowl of crunchy French sourdough bread or the ‘Dungeness crab’ fresh from the Pacific Ocean. Delightful! 9. CALIFORNIAN WINES Due to its proximity to the ‘Wine Country’ you’re spoilt for choice with top indigenous Californian wines from ‘Sonoma’ or ‘Napa Valley’ across the Bay Bridge. Start your diet tomorrow and enjoy eating your way through the city by taking one of the many wine tasting or food tours available. 10. BRUNCH Do as the locals do and get drunk before lunch! San Franciscans take brunch very seriously, from their dizzying selection of poached eggs to the Bottomless-Mimosas and (very) spicy Bloody Mary’s. Allow yourself to be gently lured into blissful inebriety by noon on a given Sunday. While in Union Square, ‘drag’ yourself to the plush ‘Sir Francis Drake Hotel’ for a buffet brunch fit for

PLANNING YOUR TRIP: Getting about The cable car or ‘Trolley’ is the most cost effective and entertaining way to see the city. Many of these 1920-30’s trams are imported from Italy and preserved to their original glory. They’re connected from the central Embarcadero area and rattle their way throughout most of the city. The BART (Bay Area Rail Transport) is the local underground system which is reliable and covers most major parts of the city and beyond. What to Pack San Francisco’s climate is comparable to the Mediterranean with the uncertainty of a British summer. Generally characterized by moist mild winters and dry summers, the year-round morning fog and cool Pacific Ocean breeze justify carrying a cardigan or scarf, even in the height of summer. CRITICAL ESSAYS OR FEATURES OFTEN BEGIN WITH WRITERS DECLARING HOW AND WHERE THEY FIRST MET AN ARTIST – HOW THAT INITIAL MEETING WAS THE BEGINNING OF A LIFE-LONG ARTIST/MENTOR RELATIONSHIP. THIS IS NOT SUCH AN ARTICLE... ...because while that information may be immeasurably valuable to the one penning those words, to the reader it’s somewhat useless – unless that meeting is relevant in the greater scheme of things, or to the narrative, that is. So, in this case I’ll begin by stating that I do not know Rene Rossignaud. Him. Personally. His work, however, is another matter altogether. It’s hard to ignore a name when it is attached to such a wide array of images and to the relentless documentation and reportage of events, happenings and human experiences. But that is how I know Rene: through his images. Perhaps I should take a step back, and begin by asking whether one really needs to know an artist in order to be able to dissect, analyse or appreciate their work. Many claim that it is. Knowing a person can often pepper one’s mental image with unnecessary details that may impinge on the work they have been presented with.

On the other hand, personal details can add depth or layer to a work that might not have been apparent if such information is lacking. Rene is a photojournalist; he’s a documentalist and yet he is also creative. The first and second premises deserve a little scrutiny: being a documentalist and a photojournalist entails focusing on the life, journey or experience of someone else, rather than of the self. It also means abandoning the urge to identify with – or project oneself onto – a particular situation or person. These two premises need not necessarily be coupled with an artistic eye, with a sense of balance, composition, proportion or space and yet it is the combination of these qualities that results in a successful image which is culturally relevant and which possesses strong aesthetic properties. The medium of photography has an immediacy that is unparalleled in other art forms. And I am not referring here to

manipulated images that often require a lengthy artistic process, but to the capturing of a moment, an instant. Skill is required in both cases, and yet the latter almost demands a street-wise skill set, a knack for recognising the out-of-theordinary, a sixth sense for opportunity and a third eye to envisage an image long before it has been recorded. As I sit writing this, I come across an article entitled: French photojournalist, 26, killed while covering conflict in Central Africa. I guess you have to be a special kind of person to risk your life in order to document and capture another. And that is precisely what Rene does. As I browse and scan the images on his website, I see photos of him jumping mid-air, smiling broadly alongside a well-known face. I see images of happy couples and newly-weds, of the forces of nature and celebrities on the red carpet. But one album in his portfolio – entitled WAR – is what keeps me there. >>

Here, I find the strongest and most poignant images, ones that alter my mood and leave me feeling blessed to lead a life so sheltered from such conflict. These are the images that stay with me: the ones documenting human life, as well as the absence of it. The smile of a child surrounded by turmoil is a touching image, yet the skeleton of a motor vehicle or a home in ruins has wider and more explicit implications. Rene’s WAR images are chiefly shot or reproduced in black and white and it’s strange how the absence of colour in an image can be so simple and elegant yet simultaneously so stark, naked, graphic. With monochrome, there are no strong colours to draw the eye in – no distractions. Which is perhaps why Rene made the conscious decision to use a black-and-white palette. He didn’t want the viewer’s attention distracted by the inherent narrative. He just wanted to create a legacy, to immortalise a moment by making a visual record of it. For himself? Perhaps – and yet decidedly for the subjects in his images; for the spaces and places he knowingly visited; for the historical happenings that might otherwise have gone unrecorded.

...”EVER SINCE I WAS A KID, ...”EVER KID, I’VE I’VE ALWAYS ALWAYSBEEN BEEN ATTRACTED TO DANGER. THE ATTRACTED THE ONLY ONLY LIMIT LIMITYOU YOUKNOW KNOW IS THE THE ONE YOU CREATE“... IS CREATE“... INTERVIEW: How do you cope with moving between the different places, situations and extremes to which your job takes you? My job presents me with huge extremes: on one day I’m in the middle of Libya, living with the rebels, and 48 hours later I am in Lago di Como, shooting a massive wedding on the lake. In other examples, I left the 2009 war in Gaza to fly directly to an MTV red carpet event in Europe. These extremes drive me insane. In most cases, after a war-zone experience I have great difficulty sleeping: my mind just won’t stop thinking about what I’ve seen and experienced. Although I’m just a photographer, during these war-zone trips I have learnt how to deal with and use most weapons and I’ve learnt first aid and how I can help those around me. The best thing of all, which helps me keep sane, is taking food, clothes and medicines for the kids I find living in tents away from their homes. This gives me a sense of well-being and the memories stay in my head forever. Those who know me well know that I have a huge passion for music and, wherever I go, I’m always listening to my favourite rock tracks. When I’m working in a war zone, music helps me sleep and keeps me calm. >>

What draws you to countries engulfed by conflict and what kind of preparation do such trips entail? As a photojournalist, a war zone is the place to be, useless you’re scared of your own shadow. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been attracted to danger. The only limit you know is the one you create, so I decided to live and work with no limits and, in many cases, put photography before my own safety and health. This entails many months of training before I leave but, in most cases, the war zones do not allow you to plan much, so you have to be as fit as possible. Apart from running, and training hard almost every day, the most important thing is reading: getting to know the place and the people before travelling; always

having an escape plan – a plan B and, if possible, a plan C as well. As for first aid, I have learnt to do everything I need for myself, as in these situations you’ll find yourself alone when you need help. Where do you plan to visit next and what do you hope to achieve while you are there? Iran has been in the pipeline for three years, but getting a press visa is almost impossible! However, earlier this year I had a meeting with the Iranian ambassador in Rome and things seem to be moving in a positive direction and I should be granted a visa this year. In every country I travel to, the most important thing is to capture the people and the culture. >>

GROUND ZERO

To which genre of photography do you feel most drawn and if you could experiment with another medium or genre, what would this be? Many people have asked me this before. I feel at home when I’m in a war zone. It’s funny saying it out loud – but it’s the truth. I feel as if I am in the place where I belong and that this is what I was meant to do. Other mediums I use at home, apart from photography, are large canvas painting and a bit of sculpture. Could you describe a particularly memorable or intense moment you experienced whilst in a war zone? I could write a book about intense moments in war zones: short ones, like being kept naked in a room for several hours while people looked at me (Gaza to Israel Erez crossing during the war); being treated like a criminal at border crossings. In Gaza I was inside one of the hundreds of tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt,

066

SAN FRANCISCO ISSUE

where I was taking photos of how the food and medicine supplies entered the Gaza Strip during the war, until some Hamas militants did not like the idea that I was there, They beat me with a machine gun, took all my gear and stripped most of my clothes off, but they let me go when they found out I was Maltese. I quickly got as far as possible and a mere 10 minutes later, Israeli forces carried out an air attack on the border and blew up most of these tunnels – killing 17 Hamas militants. Another story was when I was leaving Syria, close to Homs, in 2012. I was crossing the mountain areas at night because it was too dangerous to cross in daylight. We were a group of 13 riding on eight mules: I had a mule to myself and then we were fired on. The mule I was riding fell to the ground and I fell with him. I fell on to the rocks, breaking two ribs and damaging a disc in my back. Some of my equipment broke. The others all ran off and I was left alone, in the middle of nowhere, injured. Using my satellite

phone, I called my driver who was waiting for me on the other side and – to cut a long story short – it took them eight hours to get me out of there and to a hospital, from which I was then flown to Malta the following day to continue my recovery in Malta. As for what happened in Libya, the number of times our car was shot at, and the number of times we had to hide under the car... Libya was just crazy, and I think that’s the way it will always be. Are there any projects in the pipeline? My plans for the future are to keep doing exactly what I am doing now, staying alive and continuing to risk and live life on the edge as a globe-trekker. I am currently writing my autobiography, which will be launched in December this year. This book will take me almost a full year to compile and will be full of photos and stories from these war zones! V

DISCOVERY + LANDSCAPE

IT’S ABOUT DISCOVERY, SAYS STANLEY SAITOWITZ, DIRECTOR OF SAITOWITZ | NATOMA ARCHITECTS; HIS WORK IS ABOUT DISCOVERY AND LANDSCAPE. HE SEES BUILDINGS AS LANDSCAPES, HE TELLS ME, OR BUILDINGS IN LANDSCAPES: CITIES AS NATURAL PHENOMENA FOR BUILDINGS TO GROW IN.

A

s city landscapes go, the area just outside his office door takes some beating. The practice is located towards the southern end of San Francisco’s financial district, just a few blocks away from the end of the world-famous Bay Bridge. And although it’s a city pretty much dominated by tourists now, there are still some untamed areas. The Mission district, the

070

SAN FRANCISCO ISSUE

oldest and most historical part of town, is for Stanley the coolest part and, not coincidentally, the most diverse. It is home to the Mission San Francisco de Asís from which the city took its name. Some of the buildings here survived the devastating 1906 earthquake, and ever since it has provided a haven for Latin American populations and, increasingly, artists from far away.

In 2007, Saitowitz Natoma remodelled a 1930s warehouse in the district for the British-born engineer-turned-artist Clive McCarthy. After some years in Silicon Valley, in the semiconductor industry, Clive enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute, and rapidly become an acclaimed digital artist creating, as he puts it, ‘moving still images’ in photography and video.

DESIGN: SAITOWITZ NATOMA WORDS: KEITH DIPLOCK

At first he approached Stanley with a site on Russian Hill, on the other side of the city: his idea was to demolish a small and decrepit bungalow that currently occupied the site and create a new art factory and residence. It quickly emerged that the little house was an earthquake survivor, and so therefore also a rare historical memento of the city’s past. The city, says Clive, “is very liberal and yet quite conservative”. So he looked elsewhere, finally settling on this low, elegant building on 14th Street, right by the corner of Mission Street itself. >>

DISCOVERY + LANDSCAPE

The building already had a rich history. Originally a warehouse for Lucky Strike cigarettes, and at one stage housed the Capp Street Project, which exhibited experimental art projects: Bill Viola had installed a redwood forest within its walls. It was thus an inspiring place for Clive, who likes to combine work with living – from his first morning cup of coffee onwards.

Beyond the elegant black-painted facade which, with a decorative cornice and piano nobile of wall-to-wall industrial windows has a classical look to it, Stanley has created an expansive and unforgettable double-height space. The whole of the central part of the ground floor has been left open, and in the middle it rises seven-and-a-half-metres to a grey boarded ceiling.

When Stanley arrived, the magnificent interior had been carved up into small spaces and he wanted to re-experience its original character, contrasting the roughness of its old walls with a sleek metallic design, almost as if he was inserting a new motor into an old chassis.

As Stanley puts it in his practice manifesto: “We are interested in space more than meaning in the architecture of movement and flux, of time and event, rather than object and monument”. This open space was to be Clive’s studio, at the heart of his house. As it happens, he was thinking about this new home when he met

his future wife, Dr Tricia Bell, and a few months later – when looking at plans – he offered her a space of her own within it. The central space not only provides the unifying element for all the architectural activity within their home but also a stage for their life together. Tricia describes the reaction of their friends when first encountering the atrium at the centre of their home as “an architectural Rorschach test”. People would walk in and immediately articulate their spatial fantasies: “Oh, you could have a roller-skating party... build an aeroplane... set up a trapeze rig in here”. She added that it even took Clive some time to make full use of it as a working environment. >>

...”THE SITTING ROOM IS DOMINATED BY A PERFORATED SCREEN PUNCTURED BY A FIREPLACE”...

Stanley sees the McCarthy-Bell home as being like “a series of domestic set pieces”, and its more private activities are arranged around the upper floor. Here, at the front of the house facing the street, there is a sitting room dominated by a perforated screen punctured by a fireplace; the furnishing is all black, chrome, glass and steel and the only colour is the vibrant red of the windowframes and a pair of bookcases that flank the dining table. Moving

074

back into the centre of the house on this upper level one sees the spiral staircase rising at the far end to a roof garden, and the overall effect is temple-like: the bare concrete columns, the metal balustrade – even the tectonic ducts of the air-conditioning system that circuit the ceiling – have a ceremonial magnificence to them. Off to the left is a large open kitchen designed around a worktop nearly 12 metres long. >>

...“THE ENTIRE PRACTICE REVOLVES AROUND THE IDEA OF ECONOMY AND OPTIMIZATION...” A discreet door at the rear leads to the main bedroom, passing on the way a broad opening to a truly enviable bathroom, all clothed in white ceramic. All the fixed elements of the house were designed by Stanley’s practice. Not everything can be planned, of course. Tricia added that, thanks to the house, her new life following her retirement from medical practice 18 months ago has come as something of a surprise: she has returned to her interest in music, placed a piano in the central space, started sponsoring more concerts and has also started to perform herself with musician friends. >>

Clive adds that the acoustics of the space “sound very good”. Thus their home has become her studio too, in a different but compatible way to the way in which her husband uses it: it’s a house that is not only alive, but is growing. Stanley writes that his “entire practice revolves around the idea of economy and optimization”, and this is indeed an efficient building. But more than that it is a landscape, too, rich and changeful. V

IMOLA CHAIR Truly a design icon designed by Henrik Pedersen, the Imola chair from BoConcept is a delight to the eye with design roots dating back to the 1950s. In order to suit today’s purity of design, the organic lines have been tightened. The characteristic design is playful, yet luxoriously comfortable. ‘I design because I can’t help it. Form and function are my main tools to move and touch people. Well-considered design will speak to you in a comforting, yet exciting manner’, Henrik Pedersen explains. The techniques used to produce this chair are unique. First, a hard shell is moulded, and then soft high resilient foam is moulded around it. The moulding process provides the chair with an exclusive edge and also provides fantastic seating comfort. The chair is available as a high-backed model with a voluminous designed neck rest or as a low-back chair. OMNE TRIUM PERFECTUM OR, AS THEY SAY, THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER. FROM THE ARTIST’S RULE OF THIRDS TO THE PLAYWRIGHT’S CLASSIC THREE ACTS, THE IDEA THAT ‘EVERY SET OF THREE IS COMPLETE’, OR ‘EVERYTHING THAT COMES IN THREES IS PERFECT’, IS AS APPLICABLE TO THE THREE PRIMARY COLOURS AS IT IS TO THE THE THREE STOOG THREE STOOGES.

T

ucked away in the heart of the island this villa, designed by architect Daniel Scerri, seems to have the number three as a recurring theme. And it has generated some seriously beautiful results. Three levels, three bedrooms, three internal living spaces and three outside areas for entertaining are all characterised by a cleverly blended trio of materials: masonry, wood and glass. Add to this the play of three natural highlights - in the form of light, water and planting - and the result is one perfectly elegant family home. To begin our architectural tale of three, we must consider location, location, location. Nestled in an area of family villas, this is the third designed by Scerri on the same road, each one adding a little of its own contemporary character to create a harmonious streetscape together. We pull up outside at 2.30 pm - the owner has to pick someone up from the airport at 3 - and the area is quiet and tranquil in the warm afternoon light. It is immediately apparent that this newly-built house is respectful to the proportions of its considerably older neighbour: a small, historic chapel that has stood here for centuries. >>

The design concept for the exterior form of this villa is one of a floating white first floor volume that wraps above the ground floor, creating projections and sheltered spaces at ground level below. Rendering Works: Cilia Contractors

A set of ‘brie-soleil’ structures create planes and spaces between volumes, throwing sharp geometric patterns of shadow on the facade.

As we walk towards the front gate, Scerri explains that he deliberately kept his design lower than the allowable maximum building height. This decision clearly came with a number of benefits, not just to the surrounding area but also when it came to creating a sun-kissed deck space in the villa’s garden. To put things into general terms, this villa is primarily about weightlessness, textures and the play of light. The over-arching design concept for its exterior form is one of a floating white first floor volume that wraps around the ground floor. This is partially created by a set of ‘brie-soleil’ structures that create planes and spaces between volumes, throwing sharp geometric patterns of shadow on the façade. Yet, like much of the detail in this home, it’s an architectural detail that also has a practical application: partially shielding some of the upper rooms from strong direct sunlight. These frames also play tricks with the eye, at once scaling down the apertures to a more human proportion and at the same time exaggerating the perception of a larger, suspended first floor from ground level. Conversely, the ground floor is designed as a recessed wall - a darker stone mass that winds around in sections beneath the hovering lighter first floor. It’s an idea that works marvellously well. >>

Entry to the property is over a bridge that spans a sunken green Zen garden at basement level, where a large games room, a child’s play room and a gym are found. This layering of space and volume has the sensory effect of highlighting the multiple zones of the house at once, and is a technique that Scerri has used across the project, encouraging a feeling of connection throughout. Stepping inside the front door, a triple-height entrance area is filled with sunshine that filters down from the roof by day and is all rather poetically reversed by night, when it is illuminated by recessed lighting that beams back up at the sky. The finishes in the interior, a trio of wood, marble and glass, lend their sleek lines as far as the eye can see, which is actually quite far. Right from the threshold, the house reveals a number of its different rooms, making the best use of the particular L-shape of the site and the corresponding sun paths that track across it. Straight ahead is the first focal point: a concrete and timber canopy enclosing a table and seats that extends the roomy lounge even further - namely out into the garden for relaxed summer entertaining. The third material element to this extra area is a screen of planted foliage that provides privacy from the street. Ensconced here, perhaps on a balmy evening with glass in hand, the eye is drawn towards the rear of the house along a long carpet of lawn to a glimpse of the pool and a honey-coloured paved terrace. Lawn! I resist the urge to whip off my cardigan and sit on it. >>

AND ENTERTAIN”... A little to the right of the living area is a bright open kitchen that feels very much like the heart of the house. A whole host of storage, and counter space in white Corian, and marble worktop from Halmann, overlooks the outdoor seating area. I suspect the villa’s owners are keen cooks, a suspicion that is definitely confirmed by taking a few steps past a freestanding wooden staircase and into a separate wing, which they use as the main dining area. Here, a generously proportioned table is the centrepiece of a warm room that overlooks the pool and terrace: a pavilion-inspired setting for dinners all year round. The fireplace looks as if it would keep the room cosy by winter, but at this time of year the enormous glass windows open up to bring the outside in. Scerri purposely left this room to its architectural basics, and drew the textured stone walls of the ground floor exterior inside, adding character to the space by blending the seams between the pool terrace and the interior. >>

It is clear that the technical side of things has been as carefully thought out as the immaculate finishing. The villa is completely insulated (including the walls, apertures, pipe-work, and ceilings) with a cross-ventilation system designed for maximum ambient comfort. All services are hidden and yet easily accessible, should repairs be required. There are neat details for ease of living everywhere: a small lift that runs from the basement to the roof-level washroom, for example, and as Scerri explains some of his customised solutions, the one he devised for weatherproofing the roof seems particularly ingenious, minimizing exterior maintenance through the slightest tilt of a roofline. As we talk, Scerri reveals that the project took some time from conception to finishing. But, with a clear design scheme from the outset and enthusiastic clients, the result is a unique property that combines luxurious accommodation and chic outdoor living spaces with practical design solutions for a young family. A family of three which, I learn, is happily soon to be four. V

BETWEEN THE LINES

CHEMTRAILS - THE MOST SERIOUS THREAT TO OUR PLANET? Joseph Xander.

BETWEEN THE LINES 100

SAN FRANCISCO ISSUE

H

as anyone else noticed recently all the strange white trails that seem to linger in our skies? They never used to be there. Most aeroplanes leave a trail at a certain altitude, but these usually vanish within a few seconds. It’s simply hot vapour that freezes but quickly disperses – a bit like your hot breath on a cold day: it’s visible for a time but then quickly dissipates into the atmosphere.

But then there are the other trails. These can last for many hours and seem to spread out and form hazy clouds that cover the whole sky. If you look up at some planes yourself, it’s easy to see the startling difference in the two types. Some last for seconds, others last for hours, irrespective of weather conditions and altitude. So what are these relatively new trails that have become so commonplace in our once clear blue skies? They are commonly known as ‘chemtrails’, which refers to their chemical contents. This has nothing to do with the exhaust from plane engines (known as a contrail) but is discharged from separate nozzles connected to tanks inside the plane. This spraying of chemicals into the atmosphere has, for at least 10 years, been occurring frequently over vast areas of the planet, and these plumes have been found to contain some rather nasty chemicals that are starting do some real damage when they eventually reach ground level. Aluminium oxide, barium and strontium are amongst the toxic chemicals that chemtrails have been found to contain, and these are causing huge areas of forests to die, poisoning rivers and oceans and toxic air for us all to breathe. Of course, this all ends up in our food supply and in that of our children. Because of this catastrophic damage, this operation has to be kept a secret, which is why most people have never heard of it, or decide that it’s just not possible and so deny it even exists. It is completely illegal and if the majority of people knew about it, it would never be allowed to continue. It is coordinated by a global black budget military cabal run by the industrial military complex or the infamous ‘Illuminati’, that so many people are now realising is actually the group of people controlling our banks,

BETWEEN THE LINES

V

governments, military and industry. Naturally, if you want to keep such operations a secret, then you have to own or control most of the mainstream media too – and they do. Of course, as with any highly secret military operation, you are sworn to secrecy and you just don’t ask any questions. If you do, then you’ll be in all kinds of trouble as well as losing your job, which is another reason for the continued silence. Of course, many people did – and indeed still do – think that this is all very unlikely and simply a conspiracy theory, designed to undermine our governments, or the result of over-active imaginations watching too many James Bond films. However, thanks to thousands of brave whistleblowers who have decided that this operation is a despicable attack on our planet and the health of each and every one of us, we now have military personnel, politicians, pilots, engineers, environmentalists, scientists and various other vigilant citizens proving that it is a very real issue. There are currently campaign groups set up in dozens of countries, organised protests and some very high-profile individuals publicly voicing their anger regarding the continuation of this project. Because, as predicted with such high doses of poisons being dumped on us, people are becoming increasingly sick with respiratory conditions, skin diseases and mental illnesses, including the bizarre Morgellons disease. Hundreds of thousands of trees, fish and birds have been mysteriously dying and, of course, there were the thousands of pigs that dropped dead in China in 2013. Something must be wrong here. So, should you be angry? Is it not our basic human right to have clean air to breathe? Well, most people would agree, but the problem lies with the fact that most people don’t even know it’s happening. Even with the vast amount of evidence in front of their eyes, many people are inclined to give the establishment the benefit of the doubt because, after all, it does all sound a bit bonkers. Why would anyone do such a thing? Of course, this blind trust in the state has continually kept us in the dark for generations, and no matter how many times they get caught lying to us, we always seem to give them another chance. Despite the information on illegal wars, child sex-rings and being caught redhanded spying on millions of people that has emerged lately, we still don’t want to believe that the suits that we pay to rule over us are really that bad. >>

BETWEEN THE LINES

As to why someone is doing this seemingly insane act of evil remains the six-million dollar question. Due to the fact that it’s not officially even happening, this has been pretty hard to establish. Most reports on mass chemical spraying in our skies claim that it is an attempt to modify our weather and, more specifically, slow down global warming. This is known as geoengineering and is nothing new. It was developed way back in the 1960s and is used openly by governments all over the world. You can create a storm, a hurricane or a drought with comparative ease, and it was originally used against the Vietnamese to wash out the Ho Chi Minh trail and devastate the supply routes of the enemy troops by using a technique called “cloud seeding”. Why, even Barack Obama has his own geoengineer. This technology has, of course, come a long way and a team of planes nowadays can create cloud cover over vast areas with metal oxide nanoparticles that evidently bounce the sun’s rays back out into space and keep the planet cooler. The knock-on effects of weather modification on such a huge scale could be devastating to our natural weather system, which is what makes this project so reckless and unpopular. Another theory as to why this is being done concerns weatherwarfare and mind control of the masses. This is where the HAARP high-powered weather facilities come into play. Again, these are fairly well hidden from mainstream sources but they are spread across the globe and governments are suspiciously secretive about their purpose. These use ELF waves that are based on the sort of technology you would expect to find in a sci-fi film and can be fired into the ionosphere to create an earthquake in a specific location. They can also be used to disable enemy troops and any electrical equipment they might be using. But, despite being a very real military project, the HAARP stations perhaps don’t quite explain spraying chemicals across the whole globe, day in, day out. So what if chemtrails are not to save our planet from cooking or for frying the brains of our enemies? That brings us into the domain of genetically modified – or GM – food. Companies such as Monsanto have become despised across the globe for altering the basic composition of our crops and playing God with what people consume. These have devastated many parts of the developing

V

world with crops that do not regerminate, forcing farmers to buy new seed after every harvest, resulting in thousands of suicides as well as the death of livestock after eating this artificially affected produce. The current TTIP trade agreement proposal between the US and the UK, which is currently underway, will essentially remove much of the restrictive legislation that protects us from unwanted GM food. The majority of Europeans strongly resist GM food, whilst GM companies such as Monsanto (the largest) continue to push to bring it in. The connection that brings us back to chemtrails is the billions of aluminium particles that they contain that land on Earth and are soon absorbed into the soil and water with which we grow our food. As luck would have it, Monsanto has developed the patent to produce – wait for it – genetically engineered, aluminium-resistant seeds. Normal seeds would not survive if there happened to be tens of thousands times more aluminium in the soil. So Monsanto have magically come to the rescue with an invention that no one would have ever needed to come up with, unless the whole planet was suddenly caked in certain poisonous chemicals. And, of course, without access to these magic seeds, an entire population might be unable to sustain itself. The reality of this being the case is nothing short of genocidal, biological warfare, but if your agenda was to significantly control or reduce the world’s population, then this would be the ideal solution – hijack the world’s food supply. This might seem too evil and far-fetched for most people to even entertain, but you should ask yourself why we are being sprayed daily by a global air-force about which we know almost nothing. We should also remind ourselves that history has never ceased to astound us by how cruel and horrific we can be to each other for power and control. Democide (the murder of people by their own government) is reportedly 240 million deaths over the past century – more than all the international wars put together. Recent history should ensure that we keep a vigilant eye on those who are really controlling us and what their agenda is. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SENSITIVE AND ALLERGIC SKIN ?

S

ensitive skin has a low tolerance to change, such as in excessively hot weather it becomes hot and bothered and in the cold it becomes flaky and irritable. Allergy prone skin on the other hand reacts in a specific area on a cellular level with an allergic response to a specific ingredient. If allergies are a problem, a doctor or dermatologist will be able to assist you in finding out exactly what it is that triggers the response. The most common culprits are fragrance, colourants and preservatives. Always inform your therapist about any existing allergies to avoid exposure. Environ takes great care to exclude these potential irritants from our products wherever possible. Although thin, dry skin is more susceptible to sensitivity, it can affect any skin type regardless of colour ot thickness. Your skin is made up of cells and fats that fit together like a brick wall; the cells are the bricks and the fats are the cement. When the fats become depleted, like the cement missing between the bricks, substances that would usually have been blocked both in and out of your skin, can move in and out more freely. This results in a vicious cycle of water loss from your skin followed

by sensitivity, which leads to inflammation, followed by worse sensitivity. Yes, the barrier can repair and rebalance itself over a number of hours so you might not even know there was a problem, but with repeated assaults it can eventually become horribly unbalanced. This is when you usually notice that “something” is wrong. A scientifically proven skin care routine, overseen by a professional, will prevent sensitivity whilst at the same time show results.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRY AND DEHYDRATED SKIN? Your skin contains oil and water, both necessary for it to look and feel its best. Dryness refers to the lack of oil in your skin, whilst dehydration refers to the lack of water in your skin. Dry skin requires rich, nourishing products and dehydrated skin requires products that help to prevent the dehydration and at the same time replace water in your skin. Your diet also affects the amount of oil and water in your skin. A fat-free diet often results in the lack of “good fats” available to the skin. If your skin is oil-dry you need “good fats” in your diet such as Omega-3 which comes in supplement form or from natural sources like salmon, nuts and seeds when you improve the amount of oil in your skin,

often the level of dehydration improves too, because the oil prevents excessive water loss.Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day as well and you’ll find that your skin looks brighter and clearer. Vitamin A is vital in increasing the skin ceramide population of lipid molecules, which is the most efficient of all ways to maintain more water in the skin.

SKIN CONCERN – SEVERE SENSITIVITY Severe skin sensitivity can occur due to increased tendency of skin cells to release molecules causing inflammation which can lead to redness, swelling, pain, increased het and loss of cell function. The best way to address this problem is to slowly increase exposure to vitamin A and anti-oxidants by using products such as Environ Intensive anti-oxidant gel and Intensive Colostrum Gel. Using products that contain strong chemicals, fragrance and those which exfoliate the skin will contribute to further sensitivity. GUAM MEET YOUR ANTICELLULITE COMPANION! Fanghi d’Alga GUAM Seaweed mud is an effective aid in defeating cellulite. Due to the natural properties of the seaweed, cellulite is visibly reduced right after the first few applications. This formula also stimulates, tones and firms the skin, giving it incomparable, long-lasting softness and elasticity. Apply a generous amount of the product onto the affected areas with a light, circular massage. Wrap the area with cling film and leave for a maximum of 45 minutes. Guam – just DO IT FOR YOURSELF! €62

TAMARA’S TIP FOR FLAWLESS NATURAL RADIANCE How to apply your foundation like a Pro! Start by making sure your skin is clean and correctly moisturised. Wait about five minutes before applying foundation to let moisturiser sink in. Primer is a must! It allows your makeup to last as long as possible. Some primers can also minimise pores and mattify. For everyday, dab foundation only where you need it to hide spots, camouflage unwanted redness or to even out your T-zone. Then to get an airbrushed finish, blend makeup all over, including the eye area, starting in the middle and always working outwards. As an under eye concealer look for a lightweight liquid in a colour one shade lighter than your skin. “Going too light can look fake”. To finish off dust a soft translucent powder in a one way motion, to reflect the light and help skin to glow. Start at your hairline on one side, move down to your cheekbone, up to the bridge of your nose, back down the other cheek, then up again to the opposite hairline.
