LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

wHAT DOES it ALL mean?

After all the hours, days, months, and years put into an education, even more so an invaluable experience, I thought there must be an answer. This is the first of many volumes in the anthology of my career. It is a body of my work as a fashion stylist, art director, and marketer. It’s a physical manifestation of my creative processes from concept to finished product. In a sense, everything here is a result of my own visions inspired from era’s in fashion, color stories, music, people, and whatever else at the moment in time. In another sense, this is not only me, but rather every person, place, or thing that has contributed to these accomplishments. My stories are me, yet they are also you. And that’s it. There’s the best answer I can give. We weren’t put on this earth to just do it all-or rather, tell it all- on our own. I’ll be the first to admit that this would not have been possible without collaborating, forming bonds, and communicating together.

The answer to this question is ambigious. What you hold in your hands are ideas brought to life. The relevance and meaning change over time, but the memories remain. 4

HOME TOWN In 2012, the Young Photographers Association organized a mentorship program for 17 teams around the world including: U.S.A., Canada, England, Scotland, and Thailand. All 70 college photography students received coaching from 32 professionals, photographers and photo editors, over the course of the summer. The theme was ‘Hometown’, which resulted in a deeply personal collection of photo essays. Jennifer Hardin, a portrait photographer in town asked me to style her series for this program. Additionally, she was interested in expanding her portfolio to attract prospective clients in the fashion commercial industry. She hired me to provide clothes that would take the concept to the next level. Jennifer did her own depiction of Portland as her hometown through her camera lens.

the project Sock It to Me sells fun, funky socks— Socks with tacos, cupcakes, ninjas, mustaches, unicorns and other things magical. Carrie Atkinson, the woman who started it all, began selling brightly colored socks at an outdoor market that outgrew itself into a large warehouse full of hundreds of different sock designs. She and her small team made a story out of their brand by staying connected with their customers and finding out exactly what they want by directly asking them to participate in contests and polls. Her quirky brand provides all sorts of awesome socks for women, men, juniors, kids, toddlers, and infants. Styles include: argyle, stripe, funky, derby, curvy, over the knee, and crew. With the recent arrival of many new styles, Carrie and her team hired me to style a catalog for them and I was happy to do so. I styled a number of Portland industry professionals for this campaign including: business owners, musicians, dancers, designers, health professionals, artists, marketers, some adorable kids and even a couple of dogs. Sock It To Me uses this catalog for trade shows and other marketing material. They have expanded their business to many boutiques and big box stores all over Portland.

the art director’s role Megan and I discussed her collection and what key aspects she wanted to include in her lookbook. The goal was to show off the intricate pleats, seams and other construction details that make these pieces more than an average lingerie collection while still giving off a natural, relaxed feel in the environment and poses.

68

PHOTOS BY DAVID KELLER

behind the scenes Megan was very inspired by french romanticism and lots of foliage when designing her collection. I incorporated elements of a classic Parisian lifestyle into the set design while working within the walls of a charming little modern home. Having the discussion with Megan and the photographer on what detail shots we needed as well as having inspiration photos on hand helped me with art directing and styling the lookbook shoot. 69

shop adorn A modern comfort boutique for the contemporary fashion maven. Much like its Beaumont neighborhood home, Adorn houses a collection of trendy yet timeless styles, handpicked by owner Nicole Whitesell. As the Creative Director at Shop Adorn, I wear many hats. Three of the biggest parts of my job are blogging, styling, and marketing (which includes social media interaction and product optimization). I am the one who takes the creative lead with our online content including the website and blog. I arrange interviews, events, photoshoots, meetings, and promotions each month with the help of Nicole and Kelsey the web manager. The company has continued to steadily grow, and my contribution is oriented toward shortterm and long-term goals like: a higher following on social networks, a stronger relationship with online customers, increased online revenue, and a more navigable website. Every day, I work as hard as I can to keep moving the company forward in the Portland fashion industry and beyond.

lookbook

We also do seasonal lookbooks; where I am in charge of fully realizing the concept with the photographer, sourcing and managing samples, allocating a crew and location, styling outfits, pulling shoes and props, and ensuring the clothes look great the day of the shoot.

the blog Topics on the blog are always evolving, but some of the staple categories we use include: Brand Spotlight, Current Obsession, Lookbook Preview, Outfit of the Day, Trending Now, Ways to Wear, Q&A with Portland Professionals, and Trend Watch. The overarching goal with each Shop Adorn blog is to actually give the readers a good take-away through style tips, updates on current trends, event coverage, or even just pretty images to look at. This involves staying in tune with what the readers want to read and keeping a finger on the pulse of society. Search engine optimization is a tool we use to understand what’s getting clicks, what clicks lead to sales, and more. We work continuously to build worthwhile relationships with local and national customers.

product shoots

Each week, as new product arrives to the store, sample sizes are set aside for the product shoot that happens three to four times a month. Then, before the shoot, I pre-style and steam every garment and coordinate accessories and jewelry. When there is extra time, I will style a couple of extra outfits for other projects. To be successful with selling product online, it’s important that the styling is well thought out. It requires me to have an understanding of what appeals to our customers and maintain a cohesive aesthetic that appeals to them.

trend forecast

The Cultural Zeitgeist of 2017

the cultural zeitgeist of 2017 is influenced by emotional technology, change seeking, earth consciousness, innovation beyond the imagination, and world citizenship.

74

Emotional Technology humanistic, expressive, tangible, electronic, nostalgic, touch-sensitive, integrative

CHANGE SEEKING clarity, transparency, openness, equality, boundary pushing, critical thinking, community engagement

Earth Conscious raw, pure, organic, rustic, functional, rational, durable, integral, zero-waste, ethical

Innovation Beyond Imagination virtual, minimal, instant, innovative, futuristic, robotic, automated, three-dimensional

World Citizenship connection, relationships, understanding, acceptance, bravery, multiculturalism, opened minds, transcendence

75

Emotional Technology Post digital hub, the time of emotional technology is about the human emotional experience and our interaction with technology. No longer will we isolate ourselves through our digital realms. Instead, we will invent tools to make interaction between technology and humans more emotional and realistic. This includes virtual reality, motion detection, touch, temperature, or pulse activation, computers smarter than humans, virtual dressing rooms, and infinite cloud memory storage. Physical isolation and detachment from the outside world due to electronics will not happen in the same way it’s happening now.

76

Change Seeking We are all seeking change. Since technology has allowed worldwide communication almost instantaneously, it’s easier for larger groups to come together and form a political or social movement. Empowerment movements or performances demonstrate passion for equality, restoration of society, and the American dream. Importance is placed on cultural and government transparency, rationalism, ending divisiveness and promoting togetherness. The recession led many to be more vocal about their value and place in the country. Cultural norms and the boundaries of fashion will evolve when people realize how much their voices and new opportunities with technology and communication make an impact.

77

Earth Conscious With the severe strain humans have created on Earth and the atmosphere, we will be forced to be more aware of our consumption. The western world will push for a shift from an economy based society to an ecology based society. Functionality, meaning, durability, and little-to-no waste will all be a part of the new standard for design integrity. Importance will be placed on origin, treatment, value, and personality in all segments of the market. It is very likely that we’ll develop a carbon-free economy running on alternative energy such as solar, wind, and electric power. In fashion, basic pieces and silhouettes will push a “less is more” aesthetic in their designs. Innovative designers will continue to be inspired by nature and sustainable design, providing a new approach to having nice things—a new ethical luxury. Through these societal shifts, our connection with nature will rekindle.

78

Innovation Beyond Imagination Technology already plays a significant role in many civilized countries all over the world and it’s only going to keep advancing. Mobile innovations such as the iPad are becoming the best way for luxury brands to deliver superior, highly personalized experiences. Social media remains a powerful tool to communicate and share with others. Smart brands realize they must establish more worthwhile connections with their customers in innovative ways. Take a look at what’s already happened; computers can hold conversations with you and help you solve real life problems. Spray on clothing that forms to your particular body shape for a perfect fit. A virtual runway that displays a live feed of a fashion show. A online boutique that lets you upload a photo of yourself to see how certain garments look on you. All of these are more personalized ways that innovation will be a part of our lives in a way that we would have never dreamt of.

79

World Citizenship Multiculturalism is becoming a fully realized concept as all nationalities meld together in countries. Looking to the East for inspiration will come, as the American way will no longer be highly idealized as before. Through this will come a wider acceptance for different cultures. The years leading up to 2017 and beyond will reveal bright colors, ethnic prints, and advanced technology all inspired by other countries all over the world including China, Japan and India. Divisiveness of cultures will become less and less acceptable and the world will connect on a new level through technology, fashion, and world events to become world citizens.
