Editor's Note When I sat down with my professor for my senior project and we started to bounce ideas off each other of what I could produce, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to create a magazine. I wanted to challenge myself in a new dimension of writing and creativity. I had no clue what my magazine would be on, but as we started talking, I went in depth about a school organization near and dear to me that’s called Campus Activities Board (CAB).

Creating this magazine about CAB was the only sensible thing to do, as CAB is the only organization that I could talk endlessly about. The members of CAB dream the impossible dream, they run where the brave dare not to go, they reach the unreachable star, they try where most have failed. The members of this organization who are undergraduate students have put on and ran

They deal with high profile activists, build relationships with adults at other companies for these events to happen for the students.

These members do all of these things while being involved in other organizations, working, and going to classes and they don’t get paid to popular disbelief.

I had no greater joy than producing something from scratch about something so many other students have helped built.

A Letter To CAB If someone were to ask me why did I chose to be on CAB or why do I like it so much, I do not think the answer would be so simple.

CAB made me fall in love with event planning, it brought new meaningful friendships, it made me stay at Drexel!

To me, CAB was the definition of fun at Drexel. How many people can say that during their time in college they were a part of something that planned special events for their whole student body?

CAB has created a special community on campus.

The people of CAB are supportive of everyone who walks through their doors and wears that orange shirt. They are a family where everyone is generally cared for and everyone hopes above all else that each person succeeds in whatever they are doing. I laugh a little harder and smile a lot more when I am with my fellow CABbies and I wouldn’t have had my senior year be any other way.

To future memebers, know that you will join a team of dedicated people who will feel the sadness in your life when you do, and who will rejoice with you in your happiest of moments. If you join CAB, remember you are joining a family where only the true and tough reside.

THE HISTORY OF CAB Drexel’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) is the largest undergraduate event student-run organization on campus.

Its purpose is to plan and execute a variety of events, reflective of the diverse interests and needs of the undergraduate student body.

CAB strives through its events to entertain, educate and enrich, while building a cohesive campus community by utilizing the time and ideas of students. CAB receives a portion of the Student Activity Fees to bring campus lectures, concerts, comedians, films and many more opportunities for fun, recreation and relaxation.

CAB has gone through many names in its duration on campus dating back to its founding in the Fall of 1962. Originally, in its debut CAB was first called Activities Program Board (APB), and its sole purpose was to supplement the efforts of other campus organizations. Its goal was to plan, present, and publicize events of a social, cultural, and recreational nature for the entire student body. The APB had formed itself from Drexel’s Student Union Committee, with just a sevenperson executive committee and other subcommittees.

APB’s first event was a Freshman Hop dance and two years later in 1964, it would participate in its first out-of-state function and travel to New York City.

The APB had a good run and in 1967 it changed its name to Student Programming Board (SPB). According to the Drexel Triangle Newspaper, “the Student Program Board, which dissolved last spring during a feud with the then program director, Mrs. Blanche Savery, is back this fall with a new structure.” There was no record as to why there was a break, but when SPB did come back students were glad.

SPB had planned many events for many student organizations in its time from 1967 to 1980, some of them were Casino Night and Summer Mixers, but then another name change happened. In 1980, SPB changed it’s named to the Student Programming Association (SPA).

Here is a quote taken directly from the Triangle,“students were raising concerns about the diversity of programming that SPB had to offer...There was also the concern that SPB itself had about its internal functioning...they actually said, ‘we need help’…. With 2 or 4 students belonging (to SPB) I can’t permit the allocation of $39,000 to them to decide how to spend it.” To think the only thing that has changed over time since its establishment is the fact that the organization is run by a more diverse group of students.

SPA gained a board that took care of the student body needs, along with closer faculty supervision. In Fall of 1992, SPA was dissolved and along came the current name of CAB. The name change, once again, came after the Student Congress President felt SPA was not doing its job.

Current day CAB isn’t run like any of its predecessors. Currently the organization is made up of 60 plus students ranging from Sophomores to Seniors, majors from every college, students in other organizations, and different races and genders. The members must go through an application process and need to be evaluated by CAB Executive Board. CAB still plans events for the whole student body and the current members of CAB have shown that they listen to their fellow Dragons.

“I owe this organization my friends, from my roommates to those that go to musicals and Rocky Horror with me, and I cannot imagine what Drexel would’ve been like if I never joined.”

What has been your proudest moment in your leadership roles?

When I was a director of PAFA, I wanted to try out this movie panel concept again and delegated that task to one of the members on my committee.

Hannah worked with the film department to put on a showing of A Quiet Place and it was a huge success! Her hard work had students lined up before the event in order to pack a room in the URBN Annex. In our Spring interviews, a candidate told us that this event helped him make all of his friends during his freshman year and was one of his fondest experiences at Drexel so far. That’s my proudest moment from being on this organization for so long.

Christian Maxey Vice President

“I was looking for a way to be more active on campus while looking to make new friends and join a community” What has been your favorite task on CAB? While I love event planning, I moved onto a new role where I am in charge of internal member development that includes disciplinary action but also professional development activities alongside the President. Doing this allows me to meet even more of our members (almost 60 now!) while working with them to achieve both their personal and professional goals.

THE TRADITION The Tradition committee (TRADS) of CAB has always been around. It is the only committee that works all year for three events, while the other committees work all year and produce 5 events a term. This by no means they have an easy job. Before the Trads committee was established in 1996, the University had not held a homecoming in 21 years. Ever since 1996 CAB has always made sure to have festivities for homecoming. During the beginning of fall term TRADS puts on one of the best free events one could ever attend as a Drexel student and it’s called Dragonfly!

Dragonfly, which launched in 2017, has become an event most students look forward to. Before CAB had Dragonfly, which they plan and execute together with the Drexel Concert Series (DCS), they had something called Spring Jam, and before Spring Jam in the ‘90s, CAB had a Concerts Committee.

The Concerts Committee job was to include both indoor and outdoor events. In the early 2000s they switched their name to the Tradition Committee and came up with Spring Jam, which was CAB’s way of getting the students together one more time in spring before summer break for freshmen.

In 2017, students had fled to Drexel Lot F to see Kehlani and Dram perform, and in 2018 the band Walk the Moon came (picture above), and the 2019 concert brought Amine and A-trak One can’t have tradition without Homecoming week. This is where we see TRADS second and longest event take place. Crystal ball has been bringing night culture entertainment all in one building since its 1997 debut.

Planning the January formal attire fest starts in September. When CAB chooses a theme it takes into account the decor, invitations, music, and menu. Each of these must be synchronized perfectly for a fantastic time. The ball of 2018 was themed masquerade and it was held at the Warwick Rittenhouse Square. Leading up to this event, CAB held maskdecorating events, where one could bedazzle their complementary gold masks with glitter and feathers.

TRADS third event is the annual Spring Comedy Show. Comedy Show is a great way for students to laugh off the stress from the academic year. In past years CAB has brought comedians such as Nicole Byer and Fortune Feimster.

Although the committee itself might have undergone some name changes, its events has always remained the same. It’s because of the TRADS committee that Drexel students continue to have such pride, spirit, and love for their school.

What attracted you to CAB?

As I looked more into CAB and what it entails, I saw just how large and all encompassing it is and saw what an impact it had on the student body. Ultimately, I wanted to be a part of that impact and I wanted to help shape students’ experiences here on campus. Those same reasons have been what’s kept me on CAB. I’ve made a ton of amazing friends who have made my time in CAB incredibly fun, but more importantly, I’ve had the opportunity to plan some spectacular events that reach hundreds of students every year.

Being a part of that legacy is so important to me.

What is something people should know before joining?

How much of a time commitment it is and how much work really does go into planning for the year. We start planning an entire quarter in advance and the process from brainstorming events to the end of the year, I could not even describe to you how many steps it takes to get there, but how fun and exciting it really is once you get it all down pat. I wish I would have told myself that it is ok to feel overwhelmed and that it is all worth it in the end, trust me.

Spring Events.

Having the SE committee was a great way to give CAB a little bit more exposure with companies in Philadelphia.Like PAFA, the SE Committee might be the group that puts on the most off campus events. They have taken trips to Amusement Parks, a summer trip to Ocean City Beach, and have gone to Linvilla Orchards and Bates Motel during the fall.

The Special Events SE biggest fall event has always been Block Party, it takes the most planning out of all the SE events in the year.

SE starts to think of themes and plan for Block Party between the end of Spring term and beginning of Summer term. Block Party typically has many vendors and gives other student organizations a chance to get involve. The 2019 Block Party theme was Carnival and just about every traditional Carnival ride you can think of was laid out on the Lancaster Walk. It was the perfect way to pump students up for the Dragonfly concert the next day. SE has proven, no matter the event, they never disappoint when asked for bigger, better, and unique.

trouble making new friends. To put it simply, I felt like I was at Drexel without a purpose. However, that changed when I joined CAB (as cheesy as it sounds). I met so many new people that I now consider really good friends and CAB gave me something to look forward to whenever I come to campus.

I know I’m not the only one who felt like this and that there are other people now that are going through the same thing that I went through. I truly believe that CAB is a solution to that problem and CAB can give them something to look forward to and make

It’s also a creative and collaborative outlet, which is important at a school that can be hectic and fast-paced.”

What has been your hardest task on CAB? Certain events present more challenges than others, so it really depends. For example, sometimes it turns out to be difficult to sell tickets to an event that you thought would be popular, or sometimes an event that you thought would be straightforward ends up having more logistical issues in reality.

PERFORMING & FINE ARTS The Performing and Fine Arts Committee (PAFA) is everything artsy that you know and love about CAB. PAFA’s goal is to expose Drexel Students to the never-ending art world in the Mid-Atlantic. Some of these events in the past have been a pottery class, a dance workshop, makeup classes and even theater shows such as Beatle Juice and Rent.

PAFA is another committee that has been around on CAB for a long period and has seen many changes.

Most of PAFA changes were due to its industry always changing. In the ‘60s-’70s, PAFA would produce a lot of movie theater trips. When the 90s came onto the scene, they ditch their movie theater trips for VHS and DVD nights on campus.

Many of PAFA earlier tributes could be seen in CAB’s old committees.

The Regular Events Committee, brought periodic entertainment to campus, from comedy to music.

Students on Regular Events would book performers, coordinate promotions and help produce actual shows.Then there was the Film & Video Committee (FV).The Film & Video Committee provided a variety of movie entertainment for the entire campus.

Instead of doing movie nights, the modern day PAFA committee takes the students to live shows arounds the area. PAFA has become known as the committee that will plan a Broadway trip, but they do more.

PAFA host a Beauty with MAC event that has been a favorite for a while and always sells out! There is Unplugged, one of the music events PAFA puts on, and its purpose is to bring “coffee house” vibes to the coffee shops on campus In the Spring PAFA host’s an Art Festival, where students can come and spend the afternoon making Boho themed crafts, painting canvas, decorating birdhouses, lanterns and more. Art Festival is one of the committee’s biggest events and it showcases all the different aspects of arts and how versatile the PAFA team is.

PAFA brings out the true artist in everyone on campus with their events, and CAB wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I love collaborating so many motivated people who are all endlessly enthusiastic about making campus life more engaging for the student body.”

Why do you love the marketing side of CAB? I love everything that I do for CAB. Last year, as a member of CAB’s graphic design team, I enjoyed making visually engaging posters to help expose the student body to our events and make our activities more accessible to the public by doing so. I wanted to make sure that all students would be able to engage in the opportunities that CAB offers, the same way I was, and the first step towards student engagement is marketing to gain campus-wide exposure.

CAB functions as any regular event planning business would. All the incredible events that they pull off would not have a great turnout if it were not for the CAB Marketing division. The Marketing division of CAB came on board in the ‘80s, and has grown more vital to CAB as the years went on.

In 1992 CAB didn’t have something specifically called Marketing, rather they had, the Publicity Committee, which provided CAB with the design and distribution of its advertising media. Committee members worked with the entire board in promoting activities throughout the campus and Philadelphia area. The majority of the time these advertisements were done in the Triangle Newspaper or promoting at other school events.

THE MARKETING

During that time the Publicity Committee was a one-person job. Today CAB’s Marketing committee is made up of 18 members.Within the Marketing Committee there are two divisions, Graphic Design (GD) and Public Relations (PR).

The Graphics is by far the most talented and secret powerhouse to the CAB organization. These students design some of the most beautiful poster’s you will ever see on campus. They are probably the fastest artists on a campus organization. Their sole purpose is to catch the students’ eye and showcase the event before it happens.

Who would even stumble across these posters or attend events if it were not for our dedicated PR staff?

This small portion of CAB is all about hashtags, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and everything social. Their sole job is to learn about these events in detail and to persuade the students to come out. They give CAB the exposure they need and markets CAB in the best way possible.

Marketing is the bridge between CAB and the Drexel Student Body and they are responsible for creating media to reach Drexel students.

They are responsible for all things CAB that a student would see on campus, from the orange shirts, posters and social media posts. Even though they are hidden, without them events would never have a succesful turnout.
