FOLLOW US ON: ADVERTISING INQUIRIES: Please call 201-873-3874 or visit our website at www.metnights.com It’s the last issue for 2106 and what a year it has been. I don’t know about you, but personally, I’m exhausted. Just the Donald Trump vs Hillary Clinton battle for the presidency was by itself enough to send most of us into a mental breakdown. The 24-hour a day news coverage filled with bias hatered not only toward the candidates, but towards each other was disgusting. How many of us lost friends over our election choices? I don’t think it was the proudest moment for this country by any means. Not since the civil war was there such a disconnect between two party lines. I’m still not sure who really won the election. Some say Hillary was the popular vote, while Donald was the electoral college victor. What the hell kind of system do we have in this country when it comes to voting for public office? Can anyone really explain it so that it makes sense? However, one thing is perfectly clear: Donald Trump won! Holy fucking shit. President Trump. President Trump. President Trump. It makes me laugh just to type those two words. Nobody know what kind of President he will be but one thing is sure, the world will never be the same again. Not ever. Add to the 2016 hurricane of sadness was the death of so many famous icons. David Bowie, Prince, Florence Henderson and dozens of others all left the planet this year. Check out my Naked Truth column for the entire mind blowing list. It just seemed like this entire year had a dark cloud over many of most beloved stars. It seemed like every week someone who we all knew in some capacity dropped dead. Many way before their time. I pray that 2017 has a little more mercy on all of us. What else? Music sucked and my love life sucked. Oh yeah, my wife was caught cheating with a guy sitting one seat behind me on a plane flying back from Montreal. Yep, that happened. And I don’t think I can tell you one song that gave me chills this past year. Can you? My friend Juliet Huddy will say Ghost is awesome. I’m still not sure any band is better than The Clash. But I’m getting off topic. So was there anything good worth mentioned in 2016? Hmmm. Hmmmm. Yes. I’m happy to announce that I’m in perfect health. Shocking! Who would think a diet of Ambien, Nyquil, Lexapro and wine would add up to a perfect physical check up? Must be those once a year jogs. On another positive note: Metropolis Nights magazine is about to celebrate 5 years of remarkable success. I once made a much smaller magazine successful over the span of 23 years. Nobody gave me much of a chance of repeating my masterpiece. Well, as 2017 begins there really is no other nightlife magazine that comes close to what MN has accomplished. I’m proud of my efforts and grateful to all the advertisers who support this publication. You all know who you are and I thank you. Finally, I’m truly most grateful and proud of my team whom without there would be no Metropolis Nights. From the bottom of my heart I say thank you to Jario Aries, Sam Horning, Stephanie Anderson, Nikki Rose, Jason Tez, Angela Pompelli-Butler, Leanne Aciz-Stanton, Bobby Guarente, Otto D., Robert Gartside and my dear friend Alan Tecchio who has advised and stood by me during some pretty hard times. To all of you I say Happy New Year and have a warm and wonderful Holiday with those you care about.

It’s A Given... Bad ASS

Mancave

Dan “Danny” Trejo born May 16, 1944 is an actor that has always played the roll of one “Bad Ass” motherfucker!! In dozens of films and time after time just the site of Danny showing up in a film you always know there’s some great action and violence coming up. He was born in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Throughout the 1960s, Trejo was in and out of jail and prison system in California. By one account, his final stint in custody ended in 1972; by another account, he did time in a juvenile offenders’ camp and six California prisons between 1959 and 1969. He recalled that his last prison term was five years. While serving in San Quentin Prison, he became a champion boxer in lightweight and welterweight divisions within that prison. During this time, Trejo became a member of a twelve-step program, which he credits with his success in overcoming drug addiction. In 2011, he recalled that he had been sober for 42 years. Can’t help to wonder when Trejo is performing, is he really acting or it all just comes out naturally? This guys the real deal!

Daydream View

Mary Gamarra

Virtual reality has been grabbing peoples interest for years. I’m guessing because nobody wants to do things for real?? The Daydream View works in conjunction with Google’s excellent but expensive Pixel phone, and with the use of Google apps. As far as other phones Daydream will only work on certain ones with specific components. Google announced that eight hardware partners will make Daydream-ready phones: Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Asus and Alcatel. Phones will dedicate processing power to the Daydream mode in order to reduce latency and prevent nausea (yeah the nausea part is excellent)! Daydream View is one of the first virtual headsets produced and owned by Google. The VR mode lets players use virtual reality apps, including YouTube, Google Maps Street View, Google Play Movies & TV, and Google Photos in an immersive view.

Why is it Telemundo’ always has the most beautiful women on every show and news program. Now my Spanish is a bit rusty but that goes rite out the window every time I’m channel surfing and I come across Mary Gamarra.

This product is definitely NOT to be used by children, and by children I mean under the age of 13. But for the rest of the “kids” out there....dream away. (I wonder if I could watch porn on there?) (Please Daydream responsibly)

A Journalist with over 15 years of experience as well as a weather girl (making feel like August heat all the time). She often anchors different shows and participates in their special programming events such as hosting the red carpet for the “Latin Billboard Music Awards”. Her TV hosting work has also been featured on NBC’s “Sports Latin on Ice” and she has reported for MSNBC. There is “something about Mary” we love more than just being eye candy, she volunteers at numerous charitable projects including Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Women of Tomorrow. Our hats off to you Mary, loving it!!!

Two Saturdays ago, there was a modeling seminar at a Doubletree Hotel in Kenner, Louisiana. Outside was one Mr. Robert Scott, a 78-year-old man dressed in a cowboy hat and a black shirt. Waiting. Waiting patiently.

We, of all people, love an opportunity to get glammed up (the way our grandparents did back in the day), but as a survey by wine brand Barefoot Bubbly reveals, doing so on New Year’s Eve may be overrated.

Once an unnamed 29-year-old woman stepped outside, Scott made his move. “You look like a model,” he said. “We should go out, I can treat you very well.” She replied, “No thank you. I have a boyfriend.” “Typical excuse,” Scott probably thought, and said, “I can be your sugar daddy if you treat me right.” And then the tough love: “Please get out of my face.”

According to their poll of 1,000 adults, 66 percent of Americans plan on celebrating New Year’s Eve this year, but 54 percent of those plan on doing so at home.

Scott then did the only thing he could. “OK, I’ll get out of your face.” He then unbuttoned his pants, turned around, and exposed his ass and back-end genitals. If you’ve ever seen the movie Waiting... he performed the goat. Scott was taken to jail and given a $5,000 bond.

The consensus, which appears to be based on revelers’ experiences going out on New Year’s eve previous years, is that the festivities rarely live up to their expectations.

When it comes to vodka here’s the real deal ladies and gentleman. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is the one. Made from yellow corn instead of the more commonly used wheat or potatoes, resulting in no aftertaste and is distilled six times. Commercial production began in 1997 with just 1,000 cases distributed that year. In 2007, he sold over 160,000 cases and still rising. All production is still maintained at the southeast Austin distillery, where he has expanded from one pot still to ten and from one bottling line to four. Despite the growing distribution, the company employs fewer than 18 people. The growth of this unreal vodka (which I personally drink) is off the charts, distributed coast-to-coast across the United States and Canada. Also in 2013, another milestone was announced. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is now the exclusive vodka brand served on all United Airlines flights. Tito’s Handmade Vodka unanimously won the Double Gold Medal for vodka at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, beating out just under a 100 other high-priced vodkas. Gluten free and yes...kosher. If your not a vodka drinker you should become one, and Tito’s vodka would be the only way to go! Ask for it at your local spot and if they don’t have it, tell them to get with the times. CHEERS!!

What inspired you to become a bartender? I’ve been working in the service industry for about ten years. After that many years, bartending seemed like a natural progression. I really enjoy my one-onone with my guests. It’s not something you get to experience much as a server because of the hustle and bustle of the job. I’ve formed so many great friendships, I’ve heard the most amazing stories and learned so much from the people at my bar. All those reasons is what inspires me to keep bartending.

What is it like working at Teppan with Asian cuisine and not being Asian? Working at Teppan has been absolutely delightful and it’s definitely because everyone is Asian! The staff here are absolutely amazing and are always ready and willing to help everyone. That’s not easy to find in this industry. In my experience, restaurants are usually revolving doors and people who work there are just trying to make a buck. Here the staff genuinely wants their guests to have a great time when they walk in and have smiles and full bellies when they walk out.

How would you describe the ambience? Another thing I learned from working at Teppan is that sushi and hibachi are universal and in turn our clientele is very eclectic. That drives our ambiance. When anyone walks in to our restaurant, they know they’re gonna have a good time.

Can you tell us what your signature cocktail is? My signature drink would have to be a Classic Mojito. I’ve worked at many Cuban restaurants throughout my career and got it down perfect. Till this day, it’s probably the drink I make the most of.

What should we know about Sake? Sake is awesome! And everyone should try it once. One simple fact about sake is that it is made two ways, filtered and unfiltered. Filtered has a clean smooth look and flavor. Unfiltered sake is cloudy from rice sediment and has a more sweeter, fuller taste. Unfiltered is my favorite.

statement bomber Jackets In 2016, we welcomed the return of that ultimate style essential the bomber jacket. Not since The Fonz and Saturday Night Fever have bomber jackets looked this good. In particular, watch for all-occasions bomber jackets (yes, even dressy black-tie)! The addition of new fabrics, textiles and eye-catching extras will ensure the bomber jacket remains a closet staple for years to come.

Tr ansmission is located in Jersey City, which is known for it’s diverse culture. How does that impact the scene at the club? If you’re looking for a scene that is all one type, Transmission is NOT the club for you. We will have a wonderfully diverse group here on New Years! I’ve always maintained that a true night club is by definition a diverse environment. Of all places, clubs are environments where people who are not of the same color, sexuality or beliefs can gather and have a great time. A shared love of music and dance really can obliterate barriers!

How much does the music impact the way diverse groups of people get along at night in one space? I’m glad you mentioned that because we moved heavily in the direction of an open format. I’m a huge believer in an open format.

What do you mean by “open for mat”? Essentially, it means DJ’s can play whatever the heck they want. They read the crowd and move fluidly between genres. One of the Hallmarks of a great DJ is his or her ability to throw in an unlikely track. That’s what can make the DJ experience so exciting. One minute it’s hip-hop and the next it’s a cool Latin vibe. That can be a bold and very exciting move for a DJ. When he or she pulls it off, it’s amazing. Open format is built for a diverse crowd. A DJ can move from rock, house, new wave, Latin.... whatever!

metnights.com

How difficult is it to keep everybody happy with that type of music direction?

Club Spotlight

28

It’s human nature to be comfortable around what we know and love. Music is no exception. I understand that. That’s the challenge. But you pull off a night where the crowd matches the music and it’s magic. It’s worth the challenge. Now more than ever I think a club has an opportunity - perhaps even a RESPONSIBILITY - in this regard. We are in a new era in the United States. Division of cultures is threatening to become acceptable again. If a nightclub can do a little to knock down these barriers creeping into our society, it can be a wonderful thing.

Tell me what you will have going on New Year’s Eve. We take VERY seriously the responsibility of giving people a special evening. New Years Eve is precious. It is very expensive, if not impossible to club-hop on NYE. So I am grateful for those who place their trust in Transmission. It’s our responsibility as venue owners to deliver. We have 4 wonderful open format DJ’s. Two in the Lounge and two in the Club Room. I’m offering a 5-hour open bar and appetizers throughout the night. Not to mention a brand new maple wood dance floor that free floats and bounces to the beat of the music. People take dancing very seriously here. We have blokes spinning on their heads! The response has been incredible. I’m also offering new private cabanas. You gotta see these cabanas!

How many people are you expecting on New Year’s Eve? I reckon we’ll cap the sales at 450. That is a nice number for this space. We will have large numbers from the black and LBGT community and a lot of friends from Hoboken. The Hoboken community is amazing. They bring such great energy and they’re a great looking bunch! Washington Boulevard is like walking through a Hollister shoot! Not to mention our solid friends from the Jersey suburbs and shore towns who don’t want the drama and hassles of heading to the City! I have a bunch of mates in from Australia too. I’ll make sure they’re on their best behavior!

How m any bottles of champagne to you anticipate going through on New Years? A shit load. Most of them personally! What’s left I’ll sell to the crowd!

What about brunch? Yes, we have a big New Year’s Day party to follow, but I’m not sure I’ll be there for it!

What inspired you to become a chef? Since my early childhood, I have memories of making breads, cookies, and granola with my grandma. I can still smell them when I start my day doing prep work. She was from the depression era, nothing went to waste, and extra care was given to quality.

How would you describe the cuisine at The Famished Frog and Hops? Are they the same or different menus? They are both very different hitting as many cultures and styles as I can. That is one of my signatures, which I learned early on from celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck at Eureka in Los Angeles. He loved variety yet did it in a simple way. The Frog menu is more family oriented while Hops is fun bar food with a little spice, geared towards small plates and sandwiches, and of course great craft beer.

Do you have a signature dish? I love calamari, so right now it’s the Kung Pao Calamari, but the Chicken Pot stickers with Sesame Hot Mustard sauce has been on my menus for 20 years which I am very proud of.

metnights.com

What is the atmosphere in the kitchen on a Friday night? It can get crazy with two bars filled, happy hour and a full dining room. We have 6 cooks going full tilt, and a staff which prides itself on service.

Chef of the Month

36

We have all seen TV series Hell’s Kitchen. You are anything like Chef Gordon R amsey? At times yes, in the heat of battle, a dish may come to the window that’s not up to par. No chef likes that, I say do it nice or do it twice. What seper ate’s a good chef from a great chef? I was told early on go with what you know, don’t try to be something your not. Your guests will know. They feel it in the food. Be true to yourself.

Do you ever peek out from the kitchen to see the reaction on someone’s face when they bite into your dishes? I do, especially when I roll out something new, I need to know. I love to see the expressions on people faces when they bite into a new dessert such as my Cheesecake Eggrolls. What would you say to anyone who wants to become a chef like yourself? Love what you do and the rest will follow. This is a job that requires hard work, dedication, and a passion for food and service. The Famished Frog and Hops are growing. Care to share about other locations? Sure, we have two other family style restaurants called The Thirsty Turtle with locations in Florham Park and Cranford (www.thirstyturtle.com). We also have a catering hall in Randolph, NJ called Meadowood Manor (www.meadowoodmanor. com). This is a great place for weddings, banquets, and corporate events. Finally, It’s time for dessert. What would you recommend? Key Lime Ice Box Cake with lime shortbread and raspberry sauce, or Caramel Maciado Bread Pudding, really all of them. They are made in house, nothing store bought.

People constantly ask, “What is the craziest thing you’ve seen as a bartender?”

20 Percent

38

That’s a difficult question to answer. Sure, I’ve dealt with a lot of interesting situations, but rarely can I give them off the top of my head. Luckily, I’m a writer. And guess what writers do? Yup, you guessed it – they write. Naturally I’ll highlight what stuck out to me throughout the day. As I was looking through some old entries I noticed a pattern. A “crazy stories” pattern. Boom. Consider your question answered: 3/8/16 Yes. That older man was hot. Ted was his name. It’s a bummer that he offered to pay me $4,000 to not work and the only reason it couldn’t happen is because we couldn’t find a bartender replacement. Tonight was so close to being the best financial night of my bartending career. Damn you Friday nights! Why do you have to be so popular! 5/5/16 Served a table on the floor tonight since we couldn’t find a waitress. Tall purple haired girl with old man Bernie Sanders hair. He pulls me aside. “Do you know who I’m with? She is a transgender pornstar. How much can we pay you to come back to the hotel?” Welllllll. Guy tipped me $5.00 on $60.00 so I’m gonna go with no. Transgender 3somes aren’ not my thing so, yea, always a no. 6/7/16 I used to live in Florida so I get it… they are a lot slower down there. But this Floridian kid took the cake tonight. It was 10:53 and he drunkenly waves me down

“Hey babe, I want to pay for this girls food… and I want a shot. And she wants a shot. And you are drinking a shot. And get 2 more shots for your friends.” Your wish is my command, friend. At 10:57 I run his credit card for $143.00. He asks why it’s so damn expensive. I explain he bought 5 shots and a random girls dinner 4 minutes prior. “I didn’t buy you guys shots, and I didn’t offer to buy her food either.” Everyone in earshot just laughed and explained that he, in fact, ordered these. “I want to speak to a manager, I want to see the cameras. I didn’t order these.” Be my guest. Idiot. Apparently when he went in the office to watch them he was too drunk to see and ended up getting kicked out for almost knocking over a computer. Thanks for the shots, drunkie. 8/13/16 Again. The smelly guy with a Narcos mustache. Again. Where do we draw the stalker/ normal line? He’s cutting it pretty close. He already confessed he was married but still comes in every night I work, sits in same seat at the end of the bar, and unwaveringly stares. Nevermind the time I caught him taking a pic of my booty last month. Ugh. I also found out tonight why my favorite manager and favorite waitress don’t get along. Alledgedly she had pink-eye one night and he wouldn’t help her get the night off. Then he basically called her a little brat. Can’t take sides, love ‘em both.

9/15/16 So… 2 italian dudes sit at my bar acting like the own the place. They will not shut up about how badass their restaurant is. I ask to see a picture. One shows me the security cameras from his phone of their “restaurant” in Harlem. Looks exactly like an outdated Dunkin’ Donuts. The only difference between the 2 is that…. their spot has not one person in it. 9/23/16 Ugh…. Whyyyy do I have such a crush on this d-bag! First off, how could I ever be into a guy who frequents a strip joint. Second, he’s loud as shit and I’m supposed to be the only loud annoying one here. Lastly, the massage girl told me tonight she put him in a headlock to the point he was red and couldn’t breathe. When she finally let him go he was so angry and told her to get the fuck away from him. Normal guys would laugh it off, no? What pussy man gets headlocked by a girl? This ones gotta go. 10/15/16 CEO and employee both seem sober. “2 Shots” CEO demands. Employee says, “No, I will throw up if you serve me.” (I’ve heard that once or twice before). I serve the 2 shots. Few minutes later I notice the yellow lemon drop shot cup is now more full than before and miraculously turned pink with chunks. The bar is covered also. I will listen to employees from now on. There’s many more where these came from. And next time you stop by and I’m working – feel free to be as off-the-wall as possible. Cheers! MN

How would you describe the scene at Bistro 21? The scene at Bistro 21 is extremely diverse. We offer something for everyone which is nearly impossible to find in New Jersey.

crowd wants to hear, so you can keep them in your building all night long.

But what separ ates Bistro 21 from other places?

You spent a lot of time helping to create the scene in Hoboken. Now you’re on the other side of the 14th Street bridge. How much different is it?

Bistro 21 has numerous rooms for small to large parties. We have our Sports Bar on one side of our venue and a Banquet Hall on the other. We can cater to numerous events in numerous room at the same time. We have great drink and food prices with amazing food and an event team that can make your wedding, sweet 16, birthday or corporate event as smooth as can be.

It is very different. I now have to deal with avenue that is a destination spot. That’s a challenge. Also understand the surrounding area, what do they want and what can I do to pack Bistro 21. Hoboken was also a challenge, cause it was new to me. But Hoboken is a town of foot traffic and blocks of nightlife. What makes me work and love the business is this, the challenge.

You’ve become a legend in North Jersey over the past few years. What’s your opinion of the nightlife scene?

Bistro 21 is an extremely large venue. How challenging is it to oper ate it?

Over the last 2 ½ years I have been blessed to work and run Teak On The Hudson, Reign Night Club and Mills Tavern in Hoboken. And now I have taken the position of General Manager at The Bistro 21 in Lyndhurst, NJ. I have worked with the best of the best from Erock Entertainment to every dj you can name.

They still want to hear the hits. Our djs play anything from old school disco, freestyle, funk, house to hip hop. We adapt, as I said, to the crowd we have. We rock to whomever is in our venue rocking. That’s what keeps us going.

How important is a DJ to a club? Very important. Without the dj you have no club. A lot of owners and young managers forget that. You need music and you need someone who understands the scene and can play what your

They do, but I don’t hear of it as I did 2 years ago. Bottle Service will always be there, cause it guarantees you a couch and VIP status. But like I said I don’t feel it is the thing anymore as it was

Bands, comedy, country night.... What’s the next popular thing? Its hard to say cause it depends on the area and type of venue. The dj will always be the thing, but where I am at at Bistro 21, I see us booking great Comedy Shows, And Live entertainment. UFC fights have taken over and I see the pay per views being what everyone wants to see.

By the way, How is the food at Bistro 21? The food is amazing from our STONE FIRE PIZZA, Chicken and Waffles, Bistro Burgers and Entrees. I have to say, PLEASE COME IN AND TRY OUR MENU!

What about music? The scene keeps changing. How do you stay on top of what people want to hear?

Do people still order bottle service or is that no longer a thing?

metnights.com

I love the business but I’m not happy the direction the scene has gone. But after 22 years, it happens and will happen again. It’s a new generation we are catering to. They don’t want the expensive bottle service or high door charges. They just want to come out have great drinks and music and reasonable prices. At the same time listen and dance to great music. The scene will be back. Its just a step in the road. We just have to adapt with the times, that’s way the sports bar scene has blown up. Cheap drinks, TVS, sports, djs and UFC Fights. That’s what its all about.

Bistro 21 is a large venue with a sports bar on one side and a full catering hall on the other. I have an amazing team, which helps me from Ab our back of house manager to Gina our Catering Hall Manager. We click and we care so that helps. Chaunce, as you know I sleep and breathe my job, but that’s what seperates a lot of us. We love the challenge and except the long hours, because the end result is SUCCESS. The operation from the front to the back of the house can be overwhelming at times, but with this team, I can say it makes it easy for me to operate. TEAM WORK will always make you successful

KnoWn as The mosT suCCessful female sKI raCer In The World – lIndsey Vonn Is one of The feW World-Class, four-eVenT sKI raCers. She is the only American woman to ever capture downhill gold at the Olympics and the only American woman with four World Cup overall titles. Six weeks after she turned 20, Vonn (then Kildow) produced her first World Cup victory in Lake Louise, Alberta. She has since captured an all time win record on the women’s side with 76 World Cup wins. In addition to her 2010 Olympic downhill gold and super G bronze, she holds five World Championship medals, including double gold in 2009. In her comeback year for the 2014-15 season, Vonn really charged and proved to everyone that she is back and better than ever, leading the way in the first-ever historic U.S. podium sweep in Lake Louise and snagging the all-time World Cup wins record of 63 wins and extending that total to 67 by season’s end, along with grabbing super G and downhill titles, third overall and 19 total World Cup titles – the record among females and matching Ingemar Stenmark’s record. In August of 2015 during her first full, injury-free prep period in years, Vonn suffered another setback in Coronet Peak training, fracturing her left ankle. She came back with a vengeance, though, taking a clean podium sweep of Lake Louise and then continuing to break records – like grabbing her 36th downhill win in a two-run sprint downhill in Zauchensee to tie Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record. In La Thuile, Vonn grabbed second in the downhill, clinching her eighth World Cup downhill title and becoming the first skier in history to have won 20 crystal globes, surpassing Stenmark’s 19. Leading in the overall standings, Vonn crashed in Soldeu-El-Tarter, Andorra’s super G sustaining a left tibial plateau fracture and going down on a sled following the crash. The next day, in what seemed to be a superhero-like feat, Vonn decided to ski the alpine combined. She did what no one expected she could have done, and won the super G portion of the combined and ended up 13th after slalom, forcing a three-way tie for the combined globe with one event to go. With three weekends of racing remaining in the season, Vonn won nine races and was currently leading the World Cup overall – by a slim margin – and super G standings, and in a three-way tie for the alpine combined

I’ve won more World Cups than any woman in history. I’m proud of that. That’s what that picture shows in my book. That’s me being proud of myself and my body for what I accomplished. I’m raw. I’m naked. But I’m not showing anything risque.

lead. she wisely called it a season so she could set her sights on the healing process and prepare for a couple of big years to come. In early November of this year for the fourth time in the last five winters, a serious injury will interrupt lindsey Vonn’s ski racing season once again. however, Vonn’s promises to return to the slops in 2017. Off the snow Vonn is a media mogul and a favorite topic for the tabloids. A very public relationship with golf icon Tiger Woods ended this year and a new relationship with Kenan smith, a los angeles rams assistant wide receivers coach. from her roots in small town minnesota, she has become a regular on “most marketable” athlete lists. It’s no wonder major companies have picked her up for national television commercials. she played a major role in nBC’s Today show coverage of the sochi olympics by hosting her own segments and providing analysis from the nyC studios. Grab any major magazine including this one of course and she’s probably been in it–Glamour, Women’s health and People to name a few. or on the cover–fitness, sports Illustrated, esPn, TV Guide to name a few more. These days Vonn is on the road promoting her new book “strong is the new Beautiful.” Part autobiography, part manual for healthy living, “strong is the new Beautiful” moves through the ups and downs of Vonn’s remarkable career, from her earliest days as a young racer with an exceedingly supportive and committed family, who, having the means, was willing to be uprooted to move to Vail to help support Vonn’s training as she was showing great promise on the race course.

In the following interview Vonn talks about her shocking body image issues and what it’s like to feel judged. You’re obviously very beautiful. Do you see what most of the world see’s when you look in the mirror? When I look at myself on my own, I think I look okay. But when I stand next to someone else...now I’ve just gotten to the point where I just don’t care anymore. All shapes and sizes are beautiful — the important part is your perception of yourself. I’m not preaching that I’m the ideal, or that strong is the only body type — I’m saying embrace the body you have.

I feel like people just write whatever they want, and it’s funny— even some of my friends who I haven’t seen in a while are like, “Oh my God, are you dating so-and-so?”

You’ve been spending more time on the red carpet. Do you feel comfortable out there? At first it’s kind of awkward standing there while people take pictures of you; now it’s fun—although I definitely don’t fit in on the red carpet. What do you mean? I’m, like, twice the size of anyone, in both height and weight! I’m five-foot-ten, but I’m definitely quite a bit heavier than everyone else. I feel like the odd man out sometimes, but that’s even more reason to be confident, to show girls that you don’t have to be a size 2 to be beautiful. Any size is beautiful as long as you’re confident in yourself.

You’ve worked hard at putting out that message, especially with your foundation. I’m really proud of it. I’ve always wanted to start my own foundation, but with skiing I didn’t think I had the time to do both. I don’t ever want to do something and not put all my energy into it. But when I got hurt the second time, it was honestly a blessing in disguise because it gave me the opportunity. We’ve got scholarships, camps. The main goal is to teach young girls about self-esteem and teamwork. Do you believe in the revenge or breakup body? Because you look better than ever. Thanks. I think it’s just given me more time to spend on myself. That’s what happens with most breakups: You really look at yourself and figure out what makes you happy, and you also have a lot more free time. I’m focusing on my job—my skiing—and I’ve been working really hard. I got a new nutritionist, and I’m just doing everything I can to be in shape for this season. And it’s paying off.

Where does that come from? I never really have been the popular kid growing up. I was always traveling and I never fit in. I think having a perm and braces all at the same time wasn’t helpful. I didn’t feel that great about myself growing up. Especially since the 2010 Olympics when I was thrown into red carpet situations with beautiful models and actresses. I just didn’t fit in and I didn’t feel like I belonged. It made me question my weight and how I look. It took a little hit on my skiing. I ended up losing the World Cup by 3 points that season. I think it had a lot to do with being insecure and not excepting who I am. I was trying to be skinny and fit into a image that wasn’t me. It’s kind of funny because before I was 17, I was incredibly skinny. I was made fun of and called “chicken” and “chicken wings”—I was super

Any advice for women reading this who might be having body im age issues? The most important thing is to eat healthy. When I’m eating really clean and splurge on something really sugary, I feel like I’m gonna vomit. So eat what your body wants, and try to be as active as you can. Get into a routine, and the more you can stick to that routine, the easier it’ll be to stay fit and healthy.

In you’re book you feature a photo of yourself pretty much naked aside from holding on to ski polls. That to me looks like a very confident person. Well when I look at myself on my own I think I look okay. But when I stand next to someone who I thought was a size 6 but in person they are a size 0, what you think looks normal on TV is not reality. People on TV are so much thinner. So next to these people I thought, “Wow, I’m way out of my league!” It was startling. Now I don’t care so much. I’ve been put in this paparazzi world where people pay more attention to my personal life more than my skiing career. Which I don’t always enjoy. I’ve been put into this box with all this scrutiny. If I continue to pay attention to it I’ll drive myself crazy. So I don’t listen anymore. I don’t care. I’m different and I’m bigger. My body has gotten me to the point where I won the Olympics. I’ve won more World Cups than any woman in history. I’m proud of that. That’s what that picture shows in my book. That’s me being proud of myself and my body for what I accomplished. I’m raw. I’m naked. But I’m not showing anything risque.

You dedicated your new book to those who don’t feel comfortable with their body including yourself. Really? Yeah! Even people that I’m close with think I’m crazy for saying that. But I’ve always been insecure. I’ve always felt different than other people. I’m bigger, I’m more muscular. As my friends used to say, “I’m big boned.” I’ve never really been 100 percent confident in myself. I’m very confident on the mountain. But on the mountain, I’m insecure. I’ve never felt beautiful enough. I’m finally coming into my own at age 32.

tall and probably weighed 30 pounds less than I do now. Then I gained weight because my metabolism slowed down, and I kind of was on the other end of the spectrum. I’m normal-size, but when I started to do well and do events and photo shoots, I felt like I was too big.

Recently, there was a gossip item about a new guy you were supposedly dating. How does it feel when your personal life is splashed across the tabloids? It’s almost comical because it’s not even my life. I feel like people just write whatever they want, and it’s funny—even some of my friends who I haven’t seen in a while are like, “Oh my God, are you dating soand-so?” And I’m like, “No! Are you kidding? I would’ve called you!” Everyone assumes that it’s fact, and it’s not, so I just have to laugh. I mean, if you take all that stuff seriously, then you’ll drive yourself crazy. So I don’t take it seriously. At all.

Like Beyoncé, do you have a Sasha Fierce? I don’t—it’s not that extreme. [Laughs] But I definitely have more confidence when I’m on the red carpet and in photo shoots because normally I’m a pretty low-key, shy person. Are you? You don’t seem shy. Yeah, I’m kind of talkative, but with guys I’m shy. I’m never the person to put myself out there. Is there anything you want to clear up, rumor-wise? I’m single, and I probably will be for a while. I think this is just a good time for me to focus on myself. I’m not ready to have a family yet, but I will be at some point. So you want to have kids? I definitely do. I love kids. I love working with them. But right now I’m gonna focus on me. You’ve dealt with a lot of injuries. What’s your recovery process like? I’m a planner, so when I get injured, I need a plan and a timeline. We map out the next however many months, weeks and days, figure out what needs to be done, and then I get to work right away. I need the light at the end of the tunnel. I need to say, “In this many weeks, I’m gonna be back skiing.” Having goals and mini goals gets me through. Have you always been very goal-oriented? Always, since I was a kid. I wanted to make the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, and I was 17 when I made it. My dad and I had made a five-year plan when I was 12.

Around that same time, your family moved from Minnesota to Vail so you could tr ain competitively. Your siblings had to leave their friends. That’s a lot of pressure. It was a lot of pressure. The realization that your family basically gave up their lives to move to Colorado so you could follow your dreams was really intense. I always felt as though eventually I’d be in the Olympics and that I would win the Olympics. But I was a kid, so it was kind of like a childish dream. But then when it hit me that my family had given up so much, failure was not an option for me. We know from your recent Instagr am posts that even when you’re on vacation with your friends, you’re still hitting the workouts hard. I was planning on taking that whole week pretty easy, but then I broke my ankle, so I couldn’t take a week off because I wasn’t going to be able to come back and train really hard, so I was like, “Great, I have to work out on my vacation.” But if I have to work on vacation, I’m gonna at least do it by the pool!

Cover Story

So is it a bad thing to be skinny? Is skinny not beautiful? No, no, no! My sister is skinny. She could eat a hamburger every single day for the rest of her life and she would still be under a 100 pounds. That is also beautiful. I’m just saying all shapes and sizes are beautiful. It’s all about your perception of yourself and excepting yourself. The message is not skinny is not beautiful. That’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m just saying you are beautiful no matter what size you are.

Why are girlfriend trips so important to you? Because I travel so much, and I never get to see my friends. All of my friends throughout my whole life come together, and we’ve become this awesome group of women. It’s my squad. I mean, it’s not like I have a huge entourage. Unfortunately, I’m not T-Swift. [Laughs] I have, like, seven friends. I don’t have to wear makeup. I don’t have to be someone else. We could literally not say a single word to each other all day and just listen to music and have margaritas, and we would all be perfectly content.

LET THE

2016

2017SEASON BEGIN!

metnights.com

AS I WRITE THIS, THE FIRST SNOW OF THE SEASON HAS JUST FALLEN but sadly it did not stay around for very long. Now that it’s getting colder, I am hopeful that the season will be a wonderous one but I must admit I despise late starts and this month I thought I would include this apropos cartoon created by my fellow snowsport journalist Mike Roth. If you ride or glide, you can relate to this sentiment of wanting the season to get into full swing already! Thanks for the contribution Mike!

I’d like to share with you the top 4 picks for all mountain skis and snowboards according to Outside Magazine. For the ski segment the Blizzard Quattro RX ($1,320 w/ bindings) is a “user-friendly, lightweight, subtly rockered ski that lays trenches in corduroy.” The Atomic Vantage X 83 CTI ($899) is ideal “for everything from groomers to bumps to chalky steeps.” The Völkl RTM 86 UVO ($1,175) is best when used “many, many days in Vermont.” The Salomon X-Drive 8.8 FS ($850) shines while “wailing turns in packed powder.” Lastly the Blizzard Bonafide ($840) is “your Colorado one-ski quiver” meaning these planks will do you right for 90% of the skiing you might do out west. For the boarders, the top five list looks like this: The Ride Alter Ego ($600) offers a double edge sword of sorts. It has a locking split-tail design. “Unlocked, the tail sinks low offering surfboard-style control and float in deep snow. Latch it together and the board stiffins up to carve hardpack like an ice-sculptor’s saw.” Gnu Eco Choice (580) is “perfect for freestyling with panache.” Burton’s FT Branch Manager ($670) is great for

“soul searching through the forest.” Get it? Branch manager?! Lol Last but not least is the Lib-Tech T. Rice Climax ($1,000) which is Travis Rice’s highly anticipated new pro model. Outside says it is ideal “for big turns on big mountains.” Click http://www.outsideonline.com to learn more about Outside Magazine and to see their other choices for the best boots, resorts and much more. As you look for good deals this season don’t forget to check out Liftopia which is a great resource for ski and snowboard industry trends and most importantly, how to save on ski vacations this winter. SO, IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON and I think it’s time to write about stuff the human race should be thankful

metnights.com

for. TECHFUCKINGNOLOGY BABY! We all love our smartphones, tablets, earbuds, Netfix, etc. And even though all these things are changing the world in both small and large ways, there are amazing things happening that are truly world changing and they couldn’t happen too soon. As everyone with an IQ higher than a gerbil knows, we are beating the living daylights out of our planet. If things don’t take a serious turn for the better, you better learn how to tread water. Or eat dirty sand. Plus, the human condition needs a few tweaks. Science is coming up with answers, certainly not all of them but here are some of the game changers happening now. Where this will lead in the future is anyone’s guess. I’m going to go out on a limb and say we are going in the right direction. SOLAR OR WIND POWER: We all know about it but are you aware how far things have come. There are many countries around the world that are “Going Green”. It’s becoming more efficient and cost effective. As countries find out it can actually save money as well as the planet, the petroleum power paradigm will shift. Many European countries are making big, big moves. Germany, Scotland, Finland, etc. Scotland recently produced more electricity than they used from wind power. This is YUUUUUUGE.

Bancshot

54

A recent and perfect example is a Samoan Island named Ta’u. This year they converted from diesel generators that supplied all their electric to a solar array. They will now get 100% of their electricity needs from the sun. 100%. The rest of Samoa want to be the same in the foreseeable future. This Solar Array powers the entire island.

TIRES TO FUEL: Used tires are a huge environmental disaster and when they burn, even worse. We create in the U.S. alone about 20 million waste tires every year. 20 Million! In the U.S. alone. Globally, who the hell knows? So what do we do with them? Right now, we stockpile most. And many burn, it’s a nightmare. Never mind the chemicals leaching into the soil as they decompose. So, what’s the answer. Tires to fuel, yes they have been perfecting methods to turn used tires into diesel fuel. The fuel is abundant, clean burning, less polluting and the tires are everywhere. There is also both steel and carbon recycled from this process. Superheating the tires basically melts them back into usable diesel fuel. Is this a perfect solution? Maybe, I’m not sure yet of the costs but it’s going to happen. A major WinWin for all of us.

STEM CELLS: An enormous stride forward has been made in Stem Cell Nerve Regeneration, the guy pictured below was paralyzed from the neck down. After using a breakthrough stem cell therapy, he was able to use his upper body. This is him lifting weights. LIFTING WEIGHTS! The idea that we will eventually be curing what used to be a heartbreaking situation is truly wonderful. How long until we cure complete paralysis? No one can be sure, but the hope these successes can bring to a paralyzed person and their families must be unimaginable.

I was a huge Tiger Woods fan, for many years. I never saw anyone play like him. He was awe inspiring. And when it came to manipulating the media, a master. But we all remember when the entire fiction blew apart. Serial cheater, obnoxious douche, liar and worst of all, a lousy tipper. Rich cheap guy = asshole. Then the 3,000 comebacks and having to live though his boring ass press conferences, torturous. And now he’s back. And I have to hear all the sports commentators lick his ass again. After Elin Woods hit him in the face with a 9 iron, I predicted his career was essentially over. And he proved to be a choke artist, time and time again. Is it sad, yes. I normally don’t like to see a hero or legend fall. But he’s such a shit head that I have zero sympathy. As ye sow, so shall ye reap. Pay attention to the next few months, he will play well now and then, sometimes even brilliantly. But when he gets to a Major, the only thing he cares about now, watch the asshole choke.

Thank you for reading, I do appreciate it. We are, what we do, when it counts. — Banc

THE CITY OF LAS VEGAS: well the Oakland Raiders of course! The NFL’s rebellious franchise is a perfect match for everything that is Las Vegas! NY GIANTS OWNERSHIP: patience; you know Mr. Beckham Jr. will be coming hard and furious for that new megacontract after this season, especially if he leads them back to the playoffs! NY GIANTS FANS: a deep-run into the playoffs in January and maybe knocking off the Dallas Cowboys there once again? NY JETS FANS: ANY quarterback under center not named Fitzpatrick or G. Smith; maybe T. Romo????

NY JETS: the inevitable retirement of Brady, Tom above happens sooner rather then later! BROOKYN NETS: that their fan-base appreciates that the right team is now running the organization and maybe trading Brook Lopez will return a first round draft pick that’s sorely missing NYC-AREA BASKETBALL FANS: a Brooklyn Bridge/Mass Transit playoff series for inner-city bragging rights!

SETON HALL MEN’S BASKETBALL: a return to the Big Dance and this time NOT playing a senior-laden powerhouse in the thin air of Denver! ST. JOHN’S MEN’S BASKETBALL: steady improvement with their young team learning Red Storm legend Chris Mullin’s system. NYC-AREA COLLEGE BASKETBALL FANS: Seton Hall versus St. John’s for the Big East Tournament Championship; the newly renovated Madison Square Garden will be rocking louder than an AC/DC concert! Real

Love?

With so much advancement in the adult toy industry it seems some companies have created the ultimate lover! Complete with every body part and such attention to detail, you may not even know the difference. The female sex doll seems to have been perfected, and the male sex doll has since been perfected as well. The male doll comes complete with changing genital parts depending on what you are in the mood for. With all that said, can it really replace the real thing!?! Some people think so and some may even prefer it to an actual real-life lover. Let’s put it this way, you get exactly what you want, when you want, with no back talk or even conversation. From what I’ve found these dolls can run anywhere from $1200 and upwards past $10,000 depending on how specific you want it and what upgrades and accessories you add. Each doll goes through a very extensive casting procedure to get every detail just right!

A woman shared her personal experience with her male doll and explained it like this, “My doll is its own singular beauty”. She prefers her doll over an actual man and nothing will change her mind. She’s been in this falsified relationship for over a year now and couldn’t be happier. Just like the woman who shared her personal experience, others have the same experience with their dolls. In addition to having sexual relations with their dolls, some build an actual relationship with their doll, which includes dinner, maybe some candle light, cuddling or just reading a good book with them. As far as I am concerned…it’s one thing to satisfy your sexual desire but when you go beyond that and can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not, you may have a problem. I am one to try anything once, but this may even be a little over the top for me. MN Kisses, Angela

The Most Important Music Moments of 2016 DAVID BOWIE RELEASED BLACKSTAR, TWO DAYS BEFORE HIS DEATH. The glam rocker recorded Blackstar while suffering from liver cancer, keeping his illness a largely guarded secret from his fans and the media. It was his first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and was regarded as his ‘final farewell’.

THE DEATH OF GLENN FREY. Frey, one of the founding members of The Eagles, was responsible for writing some of the band’s best songs, like “Take It Easy”, “Heartache Tonight”, “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Already Gone”. The rocker was remembered at the Grammy’s by his band and Jackson Browne who sang “Take It Easy” in his honor.

Did you know? The Eagles had the top selling album of the 20th century with Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975. BEYONCE’S LEMONADE SLAYED. Sure, Beyonce wasn’t the first person to release a visual album, but it’s going to be hard topping hers. Lemonade premiered one night on HBO as a surprise and the masses were obsessed by the next morning — with good reason! Sparing nothing when it came to basically everything, the songs created a media frenzy themselves as people openly wondered what inspired the revengeful tone. Was it Becky with the good hair? Did you know? Lemonade was filmed in Louisiana

THE DEATH OF PRINCE. It seemed as though the entire world was mourning the death of the iconic man who penned “Little Red Corvette” — while others looked for ways to capitalize off of his fame. “Purple Rain” began to fill movie channels and family members began to sue one another over who would inherit his estate. Luckily, the impact Prince has had on music will outlive even the greediest of his relatives.

Did you know? Prince played the synthesizers on Stevie Nick’s hit, “Stand Back”. GUNS N’ ROSES (FINALLY) REUNITED. GNR fans nearly exploded with happiness when it was announced that not only was the band reuniting, but that that they were going to go on tour after decades of shit-talking, whining and missed opportunities. (To put their separation into perspective, the last time Slash and Axl Rose had been on stage together was in 1993.) Axl, Slash and Duff McKagen came, saw and conquered, as the rave reviews immortalized it as one of those epic tours that you were either lucky enough to have seen in person — or profoundly unlucky to have missed.

Did you know? The title for the 2016 tour “Not In This Lifetime” was inspired by Axl’s response to TMZ when he was

It also gave musicians hope that living out their dream WAS possible — but they had to have the guts to try to claim their prize for millions to watch. Episodes became brief water-cooler talk but many of the contestants from the 15 seasons haven’t faded away and remain household names, like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson. The show paved the way for many and proved that it didn’t matter what small town you hail from because really, anybody could be an American idol.

Did you know? Lady Antebellum once tried out for the star-studded show! KANYE WEST RELEASED “FAMOUS”. Yeezy had a WTF-kind-ofyear, which included a head-scratching tirade on Ellen, many bizarre rants on Twitter — and at his concerts — and oh yeah, having a psychological breakdown. But let’s be honest, his music video for “Famous” was fascinating. The video pokes at our culture’s obsession with fame and highlights celebrities like Anna Wintour, Caitlyn Jenner, Kim Kardashian and her ass, among others, in bed with Kanye. The video as a whole is odd and unique — and succeeded in making Kanye’s vision seem somewhat intriguing.

Did you know? K anye shelled out over $750,000 for the wax figurines. THE DEATH OF CHRISTINA GRIMMIE. Bubbly Christina started her career singing on YouTube and ended up winning hearts by starring on “The Voice”, where she ended up in third place. Her music career began to blossom until she was shot while signing autographs by a stranger while on tour in Orlando. Her untimely and tragic death touched the hearts of many and created conversations about gunsafety laws. Whether you were a fan or not, it was a somber example that senseless tragedies can happen anywhere, for no reason and without warning.

Did you know? Christina was born and r aised in Marlton, New Jersey. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN WAS HONORED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA. The Boss was among 21 notable recipients to receive the Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian award that a President can give. Springsteen was commended on the impact of his music and its contributions to our country, as Obama remarked, “There’s a place for everyone in Bruce Springsteen’s America.” Indeed.

Did you know? Bruce wrote “Hungry Heart” for The R amones, but kept it for himself!
