about me.

Hello! I am Samantha Heipel, but many people call me Sammy. I am an Interior Design Technology graduate based in Etobicoke, Ontario. I love bohemian, midcentury modern, and eclectic design styles. When I'm not designing I love to play electric guitar, do photography and work out. I have loved design from a young age and chose to study it so I can not only express myself but also create accessible spaces that help people feel safe, comfortable, and happy.

Journey
2SLGBTQIA+ Community Centre For The Arts

The design of JOURNEY Community Centre for the Arts was inspired by the concept of ones life 'Journey'. It ties in both places of nature and the psychology of colour, and how those two subjects are heavily correlated The Community Centre is a space where 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and young adults can develop their full potential through arts ranging from drama, theatre, music, visual arts, and culinary art

JOURNEY appeals to the largest youth demographic in the City of Toronto, providing them with a sense of belonging, but also the tools to build social, practical and life skills needed to prosper
The four spaces inside of JOURNEY tell a story thus evoking different feelings and emotions within each space. Different aspects of nature are rooted in each space, accompanied with a colour tied to the psychology of what visitors are intended to feel in that space.
The Community Centre is a space that not only offers artistic outlets/therapies/workshops - but also provides temporary housing solutions to at risk youth. It is essential that the youth who come to the centre feel loved and like they can be completely themselves without fear or worry. C O N C E P T

THEATRE

The theatre is the main hub of the performing arts centre. The theatre is an ode to Ed Mirvish as this building used to be Honest Eds. The theatre nurtures and develops our members through the art of singing, dancing and acting classes/workshops. This is where the centre's theatrical shows take place. The theatre offers small snacks and drinks at its in house tuck shop. The music room is located above the theatre on the North side of the building and comes complete with a grande piano, drum sets, guitars and many other brass and woodwind instruments.

Canyons symbolize its connection to the origin of life and new beginnings. The deep gorges, towering spires, and massive scale of the Grand Canyons have always remained mystifying yet inspiring. It is imperative visitors feel welcome and hopeful to begin a new chapter of life in the living corridors. Rust orange is wise yet energetic, it calls to mind feelings of enthusiasm and excitement.

KITCHEN AREA

Being home is very special to the many people, there's nothing better than having a lazy day at home laying on the couch letting all other problems drift away. This is the feeling the office brings to whoever enters it. As a Herman Miller Headquarters, all of the furniture used is sourced directly from the Herman Miller website. We all love being home therefore, why not bring that feeling to the office?
At the new office, the concept is centered around the home, not only the design elements of the home, but the feelings that being home brings. When we think of a home we think of the different rooms and how they make us feel; the most important area being the kitchen.

The kitchen is the place employees gravitate to for a feeling of relaxation and comfort. Aside from the kitchen, the bedroom is also a place of escape. Being in a quiet and familiar space like your own bedroom can bring a sense of ease like nothing else. The private offices, meditation room, quiet room, library, and break-out rooms all contribute to the feeling of being in a cozy and safe space. Here at Herman Miller we are a place of serenity and calmness, so that work can be done efficiently and productively.
