Sam Graham.

Hi, I’m Sam Graham. My experience in the building industry began as a kid working with my dad at his small, family-run residential construction company. While my “job” was mostly limited to stacking materials and passing tools to my dad, those years working with him were formative in my decision to pursue a career in design. My approach to design is driven by the idea that each piece of the design ties back to the whole of an overarching concept. From floor plans to furniture selection, every experience in a space should be reflective of the initial concept. When determining and incorporating design concepts, I pay strong attention to branding and the identity that the space represents. In college, I created branding identities that would then be integrated into a project. In practice, I work with multiple retail brands and incorporate their brand standards while also challenging the standard’s limits and still being true to the brand’s identity. In my spare time, I enjoy making things - lamps, furniture, ceramics, floral arrangements - and would enjoy being able to incorporate that into my professional career as well.

Graham Chair. INDIVIDUAL PROJECT / FURNITURE DESIGN Software: Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign The Graham Chair is based on the theory of addition through subtraction. The theory states that reducing components adds value to a form. In designing the Graham Chair, layers were peeled away from the original conception to achieve the cleanest, most honest form of the design. The mechanics of the chair are exposed, creating a simple, yet complex form. The form that remains accentuates the contrast of the solid and void areas of the piece. The contrast creates a pleasing and light effect, making the Graham Chair a work of usable art. 1st Place — Design Mentorship Program Flexsteel Furniture Design Competition

This modern, decorative lamp can transform into task lighting and was designed to contrast the ideas of light verses dark and solid verses void. Using the design principles of line and shape, the delicate wooden frame adjacent to the solid concrete block further emphasizes the idea of dissimilarity creating unity.

Se Fondre’s goal is to promote and nurture the growing artistic community of Red Hook by showcasing the community’s past and present.

Early 1600s

The community of Red Hook, New York evolves to the cultural and social needs of its residents. French settlers influenced the culture of Red Hook after its establishment as a port city. With this came 17th and 18th century salons, fostering a community of enlightenment and knowledge. The philosophy of these salons once again prevailed in Red Hook with 20th century speakeasies. Today, Red Hook fosters the arts, continuing its tradition of unity and advancement.

Every year thousands of monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico to spend winter months in oyamel fir trees. This natural phenomenon is a miracle of wayfinding and adaptation, and the design for the Sovereign Ambulatory Surgery Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, implements the visual cues from this incredible process as one of the elements of its overall thoughtful, intuitive, and creative design. Center’s design is monochromatic and utilizes warm tones throughout that are balanced with cooler grays and neutrals. Wayfinding tools include light paths and changes in flooring. Furthermore, the design philosophies of HIPAA and LEAN were considered to ensure patient’s privacy and comfort. The design for the Sovereign Center is completely user focused and encourages growth and migration throughout the space for both patients and employees. With proposed renovation, unique location and exhibits of Cobb Museum are highlighted to both students and general public. New museum design embraces darkness, creating a cavelike experience; warm tones and warm lighting enhance guest’s experience of being in an underground museum. Museum’s floor plan is laid out to guide guests through a series of old world and new world exhibits. While guests are provided a clear path through the exhibit, guests are not restricted to a prescriptive formula to view the museum, allowing for exploration and discovery. Guests exit the museum by ascending to the newly renovated lobby, now featuring an area for students to work or lounge between classes. Top Five Finalist
