ULTIMO POWERHOUSE MUSEUM UTS CAPSTONE PRIZE COMPETITION

Due to the rapid advancement of technology, there is now a requirement for high level skills for the work environment. Be it a business, an arts or a science field, technology based skills are essential for individuals to excel at their professional roles. This sometimes means that it’s difficult for fresh college graduates, transitioning to a work life, to develop these skills, which in turn can make them miss out on career opportunities.

Moreover, because of the unpredictable environment of the societal changes such as unemployment, inflation, pandemic, or wars, there are not many platforms for these individuals to learn these necessary skills. Thus, our goal here is to create a space for college graduates or individuals just entering the work environment, to develop these necessary skills that are essential for them to take the next step. To achieve this, we will utilise the site of the Powerhouse museum, located at the centre of the city. We will encourage and enhance community engagement by conducting weekly exhibitions, workshops, and more, to celebrate the achievements of these individuals and by also giving them the boost needed to navigate through the job market. Additionally, this concept brings together the heritage value of the museum with the modern day activities being held, that increase the community interaction.

STUDENT HOUSING

The Marcus Clark building next to the Goods line. (Pink Building)

Starting university life is likely the first time for many young people to stay away from home. This directly impacted international student, who traveled away from their home country to settle in unfamiliar envi ronments. As a result, loneliness is one of the inevitable issues that each student housing is facing.

Our goal is to create a place full of movements and activities to un wrap the old student housing concept of only eating, sleeping, and studying. The ground floor area is designed for every user from around the city. Firstly, it provides a block for the designer market area and a stage where people unpack themselves. Second, a space for study and outdoor activity to allow the other people to get involved. The visitors will be introduced to the ramp leading them up into the student housing area by traveling through the market. The Garden is interspersed on the mesh at the façade on each floor and the rooftop, creating a screen of plants that prevent direct sunlight and cooling down the building. Glazes window beyond the mesh protects the interior from all the elements.

The first four levels of the building contain several functions for differ ent kinds of activities. The first and second floor provide a library and a studio for studying and socializing, while the third and fourth provide a gym and a movie room for playing and eating. These could mitigate the act of student’s loneliness and lower the number of victims.

Furthermore, there are three different types of the unit plan, one single and two double. The efficient design in using space developed into a new habitat that contains several functions in each furniture such as folding bed, folding table, moving shelves, etc. The concept is to reduce the space waste in the building and bring people together by involving the surrounding object and environment. Therefore, this student housing effectively mitigates loneliness by using thoughtful programming to encourage residents to step up, socialize, and ex change culture.

Through my site analysis research, I notice the site’s vegetation and typology benefits. My design begins with the concept of learning in nature, locating the school in the middle of the site to embrace the living environment in the school area to enhance the quality of space. Several types of plants have been provided to give different functions for different areas.

The Homebase orientate towards the north to maximize the sunlight throughout the day. The first use of plants is deciduous trees to block the heavy sunlight into the building from the west in summer and low er down the plants on the east to allow more morning sunlight. The Civic Centre, including School Hall and Library, can be accessed by the public. Following the typology, up the hill, the visitors will get into the private school zone where student study occurs.

The demountable cluster uses the CLT system, which is easier to as semble on the site and can be prefabricated for modular building. The design aims to maximize the sunlight coming through the classroom and use the folding doors to connect the classroom with the timber deck outside or the COLA area. Another use of plants is an air-purify ing scene. The demountable cluster is another example of how plants function in space. The air purifying plants activate for indoor garden, producing fresh air in the study area for students. The scene plants are planted for the outdoor garden, create the aroma scene around the building and activate when the wind blows.
