Changing to the Design

Few major changes to the deign occurred in order to increase the daylight in the building.

Firstly, the windows were widened to allow more lights in all oors. Secondly, the number of windows were increased, that allows more natural light in the o ces on a normal day.

Finally, a panoramic skylight has been added to the roof of the fourth oor exactly in the area where had the least light right on the stairs, which then allows extra light to the fourth and third oors, as the light can pass through the stairs to the lower oors.

In the old design, no windows were added to the West side of the design as there is a 3- oor neighbouring building blocking all the sunlight, so a decision was made to add few windows starting from the third oor where the neighbouring building will then have no in uence, that adds extra lights to the o ces.

In the ground oor, an idea was to allocate the toilet in the dark (blue color) area where has the least light and use it for rest room, and same for other oors.

Light analysis

On a standard day in Liverpool, 60% of the light passes through. As per the results in the Daylight Factor diagrams, the rst three oors (from ground to second oor) have slightly similar amount of light varies from 0 to 27%, with some cold areas. while in the third and fourth oor having more light in, as extra windows were added to the West side of the building, as shown, no shades in the top two oors, that favour goes back to the sunroof and the extra windows.

e red colors represent the amount of heat, which consedered an overlit.

rough the use of Revit and its lighting analysis so ware, a live result of certain building and location can be obtained and discusssed. is so ware is developed to give an overall idea of how light can be distrbuted in spece c region and building based on the data inserted, which will then act as a key to develop the design further to get more or less lights using those obtained light results.

is is the initial design of the building, consists of medium sized windows which allows some of the natural sunlight in, however it is not that bright. Referring to the analysis in the gures on the right; results and images have been obtained to show the amount of light that can get in, in a normal day.

For the daylight factor, on a standard day, 7% of natural light passes, 0.7% building ADF and 92% below threshold. e dark areas (least light) are represented by the blue colour which means it is the coldest area and that has 0% of the light as labels on each oor, the yellow represents a higher sun light which goes from 2% to 10% of natural light, where orange and red represent the highest sun light which means more heat and the percentage goes up to 23%.

However, in the Illuminance analysis, for September 21 by 9am, 25% sunlight passes through the rooms, and 16% passes by 3pm in the a ernoon, that rely on the location of the building and the sun movement. Red as shown in the gure, represent the highest sunlight and that goes up to 6000 LUX.

For this design, in general, the light passing in this structure is so low, the majority of the oors are dark and have shades, therefore an upgrade is needed. Some upgrades were added to increase the sunlight. Please relate to the newest design of BIM.

Area has a very limited amount of public bins so there was a few pieces of rubbish dumped around expecially on Devon street. Noticed only 2 bins walking around the area on Constance Street but they were for recycling not general waste.

Parts of the roads in some streets held rain water due to pot holes and uneven surfaces. When it rains water ows down towards Sta ord Street so some builds up on the way. e area has not got a good drainage system in place.

Because of a quite highly compact built up area, theres a lot of shadows cast from the buildings so this would get quite cold in the winter months. A solution to this would be to open the area up abit more especially kempston street around TJ Hughes to allow more light. is space would have to be shaded in the summer months when it gets too hot.
