Have you ever played Monopoly?

What about Sorry! or my personal favourite, Clue? These games can be so much fun to play with my friends and family, but sometimes I can get competitive. When you are playing with others, it is important to keep it friendly so that everyone has fun.

There weren’t any board games in the Bible, but there are many stories about people not getting along. The Bible teaches us that it is important to live peacefully with others, be kind, and learn to make peace when there are disagreements.

So, next time you are playing Monopoly, try to be a good sport!

Did You Know?

In Christianity, the dove is a symbol for peace. The dove is mentioned 47 times in the Bible, and it represents God’s presence and His guidance.

Doves are a species of bird related to the pigeon. They are very intelligent birds, and they often represent love because they mate for life. Young doves are called squabs.

Abram and Lot

Genesis 13:5-18

Abram and his nephew, Lot, were travelling together. They had their own animals, servants and belongings, but the land they were on did not have enough food for both of them, so they weren’t able to stay together. The people who took care of Abram’s herds and those who took care of Lot’s herds began to argue.

So, Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not argue with each other. After all, we’re part of the same family. Let’s separate the land. If you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”

Lot looked around. He saw that the valley nearby had plenty of water, so he chose it for himself. Then he started out toward the east. The two men separated, and Abram went to live in the land of Canaan with his wife, Sarah.

The Lord spoke to Abram after Lot had left him. He said, “Look around from where you are. Look north and south, east and west. I will give you all the land you see. I will give it forever to you and your family who comes after you.

“Go! Walk through the land. See how long and wide it is. I am giving it to you,” said the Lord. So Abram lived in the land, pitched his tents and built an altar to honour the Lord.

Hi kids!

One time, my older sister and I wanted to wear the same T-shirt on the first day of school. It was a really cool shirt—it was orange with palm trees on it. I thought if I could just hide the shirt under my bed until the morning, she wouldn’t find it and I could wear it. My sister would never know. But she found it, then hid it for herself. This continued until Mom stepped in.

“If you can’t come up with a solution together, you’ll both have to find a different outfit,” Mom said. So, my sister and I agreed that neither of us would wear the shirt on the first day. We would both get a turn eventually. Sometimes these disagreements happen, and it does not always seem fair. But it’s better to come up with a solution that makes everyone happy. In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about two family members who had to learn to compromise. Your friend, Abby

Abigail Makes Peace

NISSUE 11

1 Samuel 25:1-35

abal was a very wealthy man who owned a lot of land. He also had one thousand goats and three thousand sheep. He was married to a woman named Abigail. She was smart and beautiful, but Nabal was mean.

Meanwhile, David and his men had been on the run from King Saul for a long time. One day, they ended up near Nabal’s animals. David was hungry and thirsty. He sent one of his men to greet Nabal, offer him good wishes and politely ask for food. Nabal responded rudely and insulted David. “Who is David? Why should I feed him?” he said. David was angry and got ready to attack his home. A servant told Abigail about David’s plans.

When Abigail found out that Nabal had been unkind, she sent her servants to bring lots of food to David and his men. She even went with her servants to deliver the food. There, Abigail apologized to David and asked him to forgive her for what her husband had done. “Please don’t pay any attention to that evil man Nabal,” she said. “The Lord will keep you safe and protect you from your enemies. He will do every good thing He promised. When that happens, you won’t have to worry about how you hurt others.”

When we disagree with others, there are plenty of people we can ask to help us find a solution. A parent can step in to help us get along with a sibling, or a teacher can guide students to work together. If there are problems in a neighbourhood or city, police, firefighters and paramedics are trained to solve it. We can count on them.

Peace is important to God. He wants us to live peacefully together and to love one another. The Bible is filled with stories of people who are peacekeepers, similar to teachers and police officers. One of them was named Abigail (like me!) and she helped others make peace when they were angry with each other.

How Can I Practise Peace?

Pray. God hears our prayers and when life feels crazy, He can help grant us peace. Try saying this short prayer: “Lord, give me peace.”

Try breathing exercises. Slowly, take a deep breath in through your nose. Hold your breath for five seconds and let it out through your mouth.

Meditate. In a quiet room, sit still and close your eyes. Breathe and think about things that make you feel calm, such as the beach or a sunny day. (It’s OK to fall asleep!)

Draw a picture, write a story or do a craft. Creativity and concentration can help us feel calm. Plus, it’s fun!

Hi kids!

The Sunday before Easter is called “Palm Sunday.” Not like the palm of your hand, but like a tree you might find in a tropical place such as Bermuda. There are many different types of palm trees, but most of them have big green leaves that appear spiky.

For many people, palm trees are something that we see while on the beach or enjoying a vacation. But in the Bible, they were used to celebrate Jesus as He arrived in Jerusalem. People welcomed Him by shouting His name and laying palm branches on the road in front of Him. Can you imagine how excited they must have been to see Jesus? I know I would be!

So this week, let’s all celebrate Jesus just as the people of Jerusalem did.

As Jesus approached Jerusalem, He sent two disciples ahead of Him to the village.

“When you get there you will find a donkey and her colt tied up,” He said. “Untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone asks what you are doing, say that the Lord needs them.”

The disciples did what Jesus told them to do. They brought the donkey and the colt and put their coats on them. Then Jesus sat on the coats.

As Jesus entered the city, lots of people put their coats on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. They praised God and shouted, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Jerusalem Welcomes Jesus

Hi kids!

This week we celebrate Easter. It’s a very exciting day! For many people, it is filled with the joy of chocolate, colourful eggs and bunnies. But for Christians, Easter is a day to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, when He came back to life.

On Good Friday, we remembered how Jesus died to save us from our sins. In the world, there were a lot of people doing wrong things, called sins. When Jesus died on the cross, He made peace between God and us, and brought us closer to God. Then, He rose again! That is why Easter is so exciting.

I hope you enjoy your chocolate eggs this Easter and have a wonderful day celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus Is Alive!

Luke 24:1-12, 36-49

Jesus came to earth to tell people about God, His Father. But not everyone wanted to listen to Jesus. Some people hated Him. They told lies about Him and had Him arrested. Then they nailed Jesus to a wooden cross.

Jesus could have saved Himself but He didn’t. He knew He had to die so that everyone in the world could be saved.

After Jesus died, He was buried in a tomb. A few days later, Mary and some other women went to visit His tomb. But when they got there, the tomb was empty! Then suddenly, an angel appeared. The angel said, “You are looking for Jesus, but He is not here. He has risen from the dead.”

The women ran and told the disciples what the angel said. But they didn’t believe them. One of the disciples, Peter, ran to the tomb to see for himself. When he got there, he saw that it was empty.

Later that evening, Jesus appeared to the disciples. They were so happy that Jesus was alive. They praised God and worshipped Jesus.
