President’s Message Dear Friends and Fellow Alumni, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Alumni Weekend 2015. If you were able to take part in the daytime activities I hope your visit brought back many happy thoughts of your time with us. Whether you studied at our campus in Elkins Park, visited previously, or visited the campus for the first time today, I am confident you will leave this weekend with wonderful memories of good times spent with old and new friends.

This year’s theme pays tribute to collaboration. With interdisciplinary education becoming an increasingly ubiquitous, valued, and visible component of health professional/ provider education and training, Salus is proud to be uniquely positioned to implement and evaluate models that will innovate interdisciplinary education. Our students and faculty have embraced the interdisciplinary educational experiences afforded to them through their education at Salus. As a member of the Salus community, I hope you will embrace being part of our interdisciplinary network in a way that benefits you as a practitioner and the health and wellbeing of those you serve.

Congratulations to this year’s Alumni Association awardees – we applaud you for all you do and have done for Salus University, your professions, and the promotion of health and wellness.

Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year Award Gregory A. Caldwell, OD ’95, FAAO AOA Board of Trustees Member Dr. Caldwell is a private practice optometrist who is committed to mentoring aspiring young professionals and advocating for the profession.

An active Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry preceptor since 1999 who has hosted more than 30 students, he receives high ratings from his externs in all areas of clinical teaching.

He also contributes his talents through leadership roles on both the state and national levels – including his service as trustee and past president of the POA, third party liaison for the AOA, POPAC chair, legislative committee and continuing education committee, and currently as trustee of the national AOA board.

His leadership and advocacy efforts are credited with ensuring optometry’s access to patients, and defeating ophthalmology’s “Definition of Ophthalmic Surgery” legislation. This award is proudly bestowed upon Dr. Caldwell in recognition of his valued contributions to the profession and to the students of the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

“As a student at PCO I was taught by faculty members who were recognized as the leaders in optometric education. I witnessed how they and key administrators advocated at the highest levels for our great profession. Their efforts positioned optometry to be the leader in primary eye care and to be recognized as an integral and well-respected component of today’s healthcare system. I am confident that this is what Albert Fitch envisioned for optometry nearly a century ago.

The breadth and depth of today’s optometric practice cannot be taken for granted. Thank you Albert Fitch – and the many leaders who followed in his legacy to shape our profession. Thank you PCO for infusing in me a part of Albert Fitch’s optometric DNA and for exemplifying the importance of giving back ’for the love of optometry!’ “

Audiology Alumna of the Year Award Tomi Thibodeaux Browne, AuD ’04 Humanitarian, activist, founder of HEARt of the Village, Inc. Dr. Browne is a mentor, activist and humanitarian.

She was recruited by George S. Osborne to complete her AuD degree and teach in the online program. Her engagement in the then Pennsylvania College of Optometry School of Audiology grew to include support of recruitment efforts which long-term have helped to further the study of audiology and establish the Salus University Osborne College of Audiology. She has been a mentor to our students and alumni. Founder of HEARt of the Village, Inc. she has taken multiple groups of audiology students to Kenya, East Africa including two from Salus. For many years she served as the Alumni Association’s only audiology representative. Dr. Browne recruited new members and, thanks to her vision and leadership, established the award that is now bestowed upon her. Retired from private practice, she remains a strong advocate for audiology, the Osborne College of Audiology in particular, and continues to travel to East Africa with HEARt of the Village.

In recognition of her contributions to the profession and the College, the Alumni Association is honored to present Dr. Browne with this award.

“I was recruited by Dr. Osborne to join the Alumni Association as the first audiology Board member. What a joy it is to have been involved from the beginning. I’ve watched the program grow from a twinkle in George Osborne’s eye to his dream of a thriving, independent College of Audiology that educates the best and brightest. Thank you so much for the honor.”

Special Recognition Award Judith A. Creuz, AuD ’06 Instructor, Penn State University, and champion for the Osborne College of Audiology Dr. Creuz, clinical coordinator and Communication Sciences and Disorders instructor at The Pennsylvania State University, has had a profound impact on the lives of many of our students who chose to pursue audiology at Salus University thanks to her mentorship. Included with her nomination were supporting statements from ten current audiology students. Each spoke of her talent as a professor, her advocacy of audiology, and her ability to inspire, encourage and mentor. She started Penn State’s Audiology Club in an effort to garner more interest in the profession, support students as they consider grad school, and assist in the application process. For those who made the decision to pursue audiology, Dr. Creuz championed the Osborne College of Audiology program as the best program in the profession. It is in recognition of Dr. Creuz’s advocacy of audiology and the Osborne College of Audiology, and her extraordinary talent as an educator and mentor that the Alumni Association proudly presents this award to Dr. Creuz.

“I was privileged to meet George Osborne at professional conferences, and to be infected with his contagious enthusiasm for the profession of Audiology. One of the highlights of my life was getting the call from Dr. Osborne telling me that I had passed the comprehensive final exam for the AuD program.

At that time I never expected to become a teacher and mentor for students considering Audiology as a career. I am forever grateful for the opportunities afforded me through the AuD program at Salus and am so proud of the students who have decided to follow in my footsteps by pursuing their AuD degree at the George S. Osborne College of Audiology. The spirit of Dr. Osborne lives in all of us!”
