The Graduation Programme (gr. 10-12) Credit Requirements

The Graduation Programme (Gr. 10-12) Credit Requirements

Students require a minimum of 80 credits to graduate

● 52 credits are required from the following core courses

○ LanguageArts 10, 11, 12 (12 credits)

○ Social Studies 10, 11, or 12 (8 credits)

○ Mathematics 10, 11, or 12 (8 credits)

○ Science 10, 11, or 12 (8 credits)

○ Physical and Health Education 10 (4 credits)

○ Arts Education and/orApplied Design, Skills, and Technologies 10, 11, or 12 (4 credits)

○ Career-Life Education (4 credits)

○ Career-Life Connections (4 credits)

● At least 28 credits must be elective course credits . These can be chosen from Grade 10, 11, or 12 levels, but at least 16 of these credits must be at the Grade 12 level, which can include required Grade 12 courses and elective Grade 12 courses.

*Many students graduate with more than 80 credits

A minimum of 80 credits is required to Graduate

52 credits are from Core Courses + 28 are elective courses= a total of 80 credits

At least 16 credits must be at the Grade 12 level

Digital Course Planning Guide

● Link to the digital planning guide will be sent to parents

The digital guide includes:

● Core course descriptions

Overview of Course Pathways

The Grade 10 Literacy Studies and Composition course develops reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Students analyze literary texts, improve writing across formats, and refine communication through discussions. Emphasis is placed on interpretation, argumentation, and inquiry, preparing students for advanced English studies and effective real-world communication. (4 Credits)

● Regular information sessions for students & parents

● Meetings for Grade 9 with our guidance counsellors after the mid-term break in February.

● We will invite parents as well.

● Students will have a pathway portfolio to track their course credits from Gr. 10-12

● Support and guidance from LSS for students with learning differences

● University tours offered

● On site visits from University representatives

Career 10 Course

Key Features: Integrated in the students schedule

(1 block-week community time)

● Personal Exploration: Identify strengths, values, and interests.

● Goal Setting: Develop academic and personal growth plans.

● Career Research: Explore post-secondary options and career paths.

● Capstone Project: Showcase learning through a personalized project. Students will begin their research and present their capstone in Grade 12.

Career-Life Connections 12:

Prepares students for life beyond high school through reflection, planning, and real-world experiences.An extension of Careers 10.

● Experiential Learning:Apply learning through work experience, volunteering, or community involvement.

Post-Secondary Planning: Explore pathways for education, careers, and life goals.

A 86-100 The student demonstrates excellent or outstanding performance in relation to learning outcomes for the course.

B 73-85 The student demonstrates very good performance in relation to learning outcomes for the course.

C+ 67-72 The student demonstrates good performance in relation to learning outcomes for the course.

C 60-66 The student demonstrates satisfactory performance in relation to learning outcomes for the course.

C- 50-59 The student demonstrates minimally acceptable performance in relation to learning outcomes for the course.

IE (Insufficient Evidence of Learning)The student has not provided sufficient evidence of learning in relation to the learning outcomes for the course.

F 0-49 (Failing)The student is not demonstrating minimally acceptable learning in relation to the learning outcomes for the course.The letter grade “F” may only be assigned if an “IE” (Insufficient Evidence of Learning) letter grade has previously been assigned for that course.

Starting in Grade 10 students enter the BC graduation programme. They get:

1. A BC Ministry of Education transcript.

2. An overview of all grades and credits completed.

3. Results of key literacy and numeracy assessments. (grades 10 & 12)

4. Transcript also includes a. All external courses b. AP certificate

Let’s Address Misconceptions

Misconceptions on Report Cards

Report cards don’t have percentages or letter grades.

Grades 10, 11, and 12 report cards provide a letter grade and percentage and credits for all courses taken.

Misconceptions on UniversityAcceptance Requirements

GCSE’s are required for UK university entrance.

Fact

False: GCSE’s are not required. In fact, the BC Curriculum provides students with direct entry into UK universities.

Misconceptions on Recognition of the BC Curriculum

MythThe Dogwood Diploma is not accepted by UK Universities.

Fact

The Dogwood Diploma is widely accepted and highly regarded in the UK and universities worldwide. In fact, UK Universities hold the BC Curriculum in higher regard than US curriculum.

Misconceptions regarding the transcript when leaving the school before graduation.

Myth

My child will be disadvantaged if we leave Saltus for another school before graduation.

Fact

Not true. Your child’s BC transcript is recognized worldwide as a curriculum with high academic rigour.

There are no rigorous standardized assessments in the BC Graduation Programme.

If my child doesn’t take AP’s he/she will not be accepted in university.

Fact

False. Students who graduate with their Dogwood diploma with good grades are accepted in universities worldwide.

Students enrolled in the BC Curriculum can take AP courses

● Flexible Integration:APcourses can be taken as electives or in place of standard BC curriculum courses if the school allows

● Dual Benefits: Students earn BC credits while preparing forAPexams, which can lead to university credit or advanced standing at post-secondary institutions.

Grade 9 students will have an individual meeting with Mrs. Walker or Mr.Anthony to discuss their course selections.

Parents/Guardians are invited to attend these sessions.
