Translating the function and process of the chosen natural element to an architectural element (using one material)

Division is applied in the model by creating negative spaces using the same element (same features: cubes) which shows replication and repetition similar to the idea of “pixels”. The “division” stage -which will be the small exhibitions- is located at a lower level than the large exhibition space (showed in the “adjacency stage) see fig. 1. Negative spaces are created by putting the cubes at large distances from each other. Small exhibitions are located at slightly different levels where the light experience is shown by using the transparency papers see fig. 2. The transparency papers are folded in the “division” stage then they gradually unfold and get larger as the user goes to the larger exhibition. As the transparencies become unfolded, the message is clearer to the users: light experience vs. information received.

Fig 2: Fig. 1:

Adjacency is then applied in the model by organizing the sticks carrying the cubes in an arrangement that makes them more close to each other (bamboo sticks disappearing gradually- negative spaces reduced) see fig. 3. The users by that stage (at the large exhibition) are more aware than before of the message delivered. Therefore, there is a diffusion of light where the transparencies are more unfolded see fig. 2. The organization of the cubes shows a continuation of the space and makes it act as if it’s leading the user to the meeting space. Moreover, the sticks carrying the cubes are gradually getting higher showing the upward movement which is also created in the floor.

Interconnection is applied in the model using the bamboo sticks that are interlocking in the middle of the space to show the interconnection of different ideas and perceptions at this stage which is in the research labs. Users will experience it after moving through the small exhibition spaces and then higher to the large exhibition. So, users do research before reaching the library- CAPTURING stage.

Capturing stage is showed as an intermediate space between the research labs (interconnection stage) and the platform (dynamic context stage) which is located at the end of the space formed by the sticks and cubes. This is the library where more details are gathered and assured.

Fig. 4: Way out of the “unity” space created by the sticks and cubes including (divisionadjacencyinterconnection). The “capturing” stage is enclosed by the “unity stage” and the “dynamic context stage”

UNITY stage is then formed by indicating the DIVISION/ADJACENCY/INTERCONNECTION stages. This stage is the meeting space where users interact and share the same activities which help them perceive the message clearly. This stage is shown in that way in the model to give the feeling as if it leads the users to the next three stages which are CAPTURING/DYNAMIC CONTEXT/ PERCEPTION. The light is spread in the space showing that the message delivered is clear to users and this encourage them to

apply it by themselves (shown covering most of the space).

Dynamic Context stage is shown by having the sticks put in a dynamic way which no organization and spread with less cubes hanging to show that unity stage has finished its role to lead the users to the PERCEPTION stage. This stage is applied in the platforms outdoors where users interact with the environment with more openness.

Early stage: before completing model

PERCEPTION stage is the final stage where users are attracted to the several workshops of different kinds. The strips supported on the few cubes hanging on the sticks indicate that: based on the dynamic context users experience, each user perceive the message in his own way (different directions of the strips). These strips have the same width as the cubes used in the UNITY stage to show a transition from the unity stage to the perception stage but in a way that shows harmony of the space the users will experience.
