Experience the Contessa Awards

T

ruth be told, the excitement surrounding the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards has been building since we received the first entries months ago, but it’s in those

phone calls with finalists that the Contessa Awards seem to come to life. From cheering to hollering to infectious laughter, hearing the pure happiness in each finalist’s voice makes the countdown to the Contessa Awards (November 9) even more exciting. In truth, having that personal connection with each individual is a reminder of what the Contessas are all about: a celebration of the best and the brightest in the Canadian professional beauty industry. From the names of seasoned industry veterans to up-and-comers, you’ll find the 26th Annual Contessa Awards Finalists List on page 80, adding to the anticipation of the Awards Gala, which is less than a month away. Along with the upcoming Contessa Awards, the Salon Magazine team has pulled together a packed issue, from advice on scheduling your salon team during peak seasons (p. 50) to makeup tips from an editorial makeup artist that will help give last-minute clients a touch of glam (p. 54). We’re also giving you a behind-the-scenes look at Salon Magazine’s cover shoot with Moroccanoil’s educator and international spokesperson, Kevin Hughes. Having had opportunities to connect with beauty professionals across you in person at this year’s Contessa Awards. Still deciding whether or not to attend? Find out what the fuss is all about online at SalonMagazine.ca, where we have a complete gallery of Contessa collections and coverage of last year’s Awards Gala. But even if you’re not joining us in Toronto, you can experience all the excitement of the 26th Annual Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards through our live webcast, brought to you by CND.

Triple Platinum Blonde clients coming in for their lightening and brightening touchups will be happy to know that their colour—and their tresses—will be protected with the new Label.M Brightening Blonde collection. The Shampoo, Conditioner and Balm trio is the antidote to colourtreated hair, replenishing moisture and repairing brittle strands with its blend of botanical ingredients like antioxidant-rich mamaki tea, shine-boosting hops and conditioning white pineapple, along with other blonde-enhancing but hair-protecting ingredients. The winner of the lineup is the Balm, which has an extra dose of botanical ingredients for a heat-protecting, smoothing, moisture-locking leave-in treatment.

The late founding father of Aveda, Horst Rechelbacher, also launched another do-good company called Intelligent Nutrients. While not entirely new to the world of haircare, this certified organic brand takes a cruelty-free approach to product development and has ingredients like black cumin seed oil to protect tresses against environmental stressors, coconut oil to repair and smooth split ends; and cinnamon oil which helps to fix styles in place. In addition, the travel-sized bundles are perfect for gift-giving or those constantly travelling clients who are taking to the open road, this is one brand worth giving a second and third look to.

Not sure what to do with all those empty Tea Tree bottles? Paul Mitchell has the contest for you.

KQC IMATIC AUTO-CURLER “Sometimes clients want quick curls or updos. The KQC iMatic Auto-Curler rotates at an even speed for perfect, effortless curls every time. Just clamp the hair, choose the direction and let the iMatic do the work,” says Min Hee McKenna, artistic director and educator at Min Hee Style Salon in Vancouver.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The motorized barrel rotates both left and right for perfect curls or loose waves.

Paul Mitchell’s environmental initiatives have gone beyond tree planting and replenishing the resources used for its Tea Tree collection; now the brand wants to give back to those who also employ the three R’s. From December 1, 2014 to January 2015, Paul Mitchell will be hosting a contest for reusing finished Tea Tree product packaging. Just snap a photo of your creation and submit it online for your chance to win one of five $1,000 cash prizes. Whether you’re going for an indoor herb garden, a succulent holder or an oil diffuser, the possibilities are endless, and since you have access to all of those empty Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner bottles anyway, you’ll be doing more than sprucing up your salon area. Shaking Things Up Ditch the traditional lather-rinse-repeat mentality with the new Unwash cleansing system. Unwash is on a mission to change the way everyone washes their hair, following one of the latest trends in hair care: the no-shampoo movement. With three new products—the Bio-Cleansing Conditioner, AntiResidue Rinse and Hydrating Masque—the line resets and restores your hair’s balance of natural oils, ridding strands of residue buildup from traditional shampoos, conditioners and styling products. The products eliminate harsh chemicals often found in traditional shampoos and conditioners, replacing them with good-for-your-hair ingredients.

ColorProof has just launched two new goods to its already impressive lineup: the RuleBreaker Firm Flexible Wax and HardCore Epic Hold Color Protect Hairspray. The RuleBreaker Firm Flexible Wax uses stretchable certified organic liquid bamboo fibres, along with three vegan waxes, for ultimate hold, while the HardCore Epic Hold Color Protect Hairspray uses polymers and ceramides alongside micro-silicone technology for a lightweight mist that ensures that even the most complex updos won’t budge.

Two new products bring the runway look to your salon with the Shu Uemura Art of Hair The Detail Master is a directional fixing spray that offers precision hold for very detailed styles, while also finishing off the look with a high shine. Texture Wave creates movement and natural-looking texture, while also ensuring that the style doesn’t budge, whether it’s tousled tresses or a done-undone updo.

“This year, I’m planning to work with a lot of sombrés, which look great on paler skin now that the tanning months are far behind. To balance it out, I like adding lighter shades to frame the face,” shares Alexandre Chabot artistic director for Matrix Canada and owner of Salon Nzo in Sorel, Quebec. This is a wonderful colourist’s trick that not only enhances everyone’s complexions for a more youthful and dewy look but also reduces the appearance of fine lines by adding more light around the face. For Eric St-Jean, an educator for Kevin. Murphy and co-owner of Saco Laval, the idea this season is to lighten brunettes’ ends from one to two shades while adding more depth and contrast on the crown by creating an ombré look with another shade. “It’s a great way to create a nice colour effect for clients

Bookings are key During the busiest time of the year in your salon, you need to manage your clients’ expectations with skill and finesse because, let’s face it, you won’t be able to squeeze in major changes for everyone before their big New Year’s Eve bash. “For a client requesting a dramatic makeover, I usually start working on her new colour at the beginning of November,” says Chabot. “That way, complicated colour jobs are done early in the season before you become crazy busy with last-minute bookings.” “I always discuss the next appointment with my client when she’s sitting in my chair. Ten Steps to Smart Scheduling

Maximize your salon schedule during the holidays with smart solutions from hair pros that will keep your clients happy and your salon humming all season. By Anna Lee Boschetto

W

ith the hustle and bustle of the holiday season ahead, your clients’ party schedules are quickly filling up, and so is your salon calendar. “I'm a big

advocate for making an appointment at your hair salon at your appointment before the season hits,” says Daniel Di Tommaso of Mane Society Salon professionals ensure that their clients receive the very best while keeping your business soaring high into the new year!

1.

Give clients notice

“Start notifying clientele around the end of October to start them thinking about what events they will have to attend. Then have them book accordingly so that they get the best look for both the event they have to attend and the holiday itself, especially when it’s a colour service.” – Michael Shire, Holt Renfrew Salon & Spa, Toronto

2.

Simplify scheduling

“Keep the line of communication open between the colourist and the stylist so both know each other’s clients' needs. Creating that salon vibe is very important for both the stylists and the clients.” – Daniel Di Tommaso, John Donato Academy, Salon & Spa, Toronto

6.

Ultimate experience

“Offering express services, such as manicures during a colour processing time is ideal because the client receives every service while saving time in the process.”– MS

Year in The

With many clients looking to celebs for hair inspiration, here are some of the snap-worthy celebrity hair trends of 2014.

Hair

By Ashley Kowalewski

BEING BLUNT While some celebs have been going for more natural textures, others have been choosing something with a stronger edge. Always the showstopper, BeyoncÊ recently debuted her bob after experimenting with a pixie cut and shorter tresses over the past year, while House of Cards’ Kate Mara went light and short with her locks in a versatile cut that appears blunt when straight but softer when curled.

Platinum Pretty Some people go lighter in the summer months, but these celebs went full-on platinum. Lena Dunham bob at the Emmys, and funny girl Kristen Wiig went back to blonde after sporting dark auburn shades for her past couple flicks. Maggie Gyllenhaal paraded her platinum pixie cut in the spring. And even Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine had a brief dip in the platinum blonde waters.

LONG & SHORT OF IT That somewhere-in-between length that is not too short or too long has been seen on many celebs who have been opting for a medium length. Emma Stone went for a jaw-length bob with side-swept bangs, while Taylor Swift chose a softer, wispier texture for her long bob. Even Kardashian sister Kylie Jenner chopped off her long locks in favour of a look with more fashion-forward appeal.

Makeup Master Class

We chatted with Montreal-based fashion and editorial makeup artist Marika D’Auteuil on how to give your clients a party-ready look that will outlast their bubbly.

By Ashley Kowalewski

skin

Whether your client wants a dewy glow or a matte finish, healthy-looking skin is always in style. To get a good base for the rest of your cosmetic canvas, Marika D’Auteuil suggests using something a little lighter such as a BB cream or tinted moisturizer.

For stepping out to a chic holiday party, a smoky eye is a classic look that will instantly take your clients from day to night. While D’Auteuil thinks even a quick smoky eye can make a big impact, she says it’s important to ask your client what kind of smoky look they want, as everyone has their own interpretation. For a quick yet long-lasting look, “cover the eyelid with an eyeliner pencil and blend it out with your finger before applying eye shadow.”

cheeks

Give your clients rosy, glowing cheeks with a pop of colour. To make the blush last longer, D’Auteuil suggests adding a bit of liquid cream blush to the apples of the cheeks with your fingers (the heat will help blend it better) or using the same pink lipstick as a cream blusher instead before adding the powder blush.

highlight

lips

While festive berry lips have dominated holiday seasons past, this year it’s all about muted dusty rose hues—especially when your client wants to go for a bold smoky eye. To get the true colour of a lipstick and make it last longer, D’Auteuil suggests that you “apply foundation or concealer to your client’s lips as a base before applying lip pencil or lipstick.” S

Contour can be great for photo shoots and runway shows, but it may not be totally translatable for your client at a holiday party. To keep contours looking natural, D’Auteuil recommends “applying a bit of non-shimmery bronzer just under the cheekbones.” Or to strategically add a bit more glow for the festivities. “Use a highlighter on the bridge of the nose, on the top of the cheekbones, on the cupid’s bow and under the browbone.”

On Set: Shot on location in The Junction, an up-and-coming, trendy, west Toronto neighbourhood.

The Crew: Moroccanoil educator and spokesperson, Kevin Hughes, provided the creative direction for the team, which included photographer Richard Dubois, fashion stylist Talia Brown and makeup artist Wendy Rorong.

Retro Redone: Hughes describes each look as putting a modern twist on a classic style. The initial inspiration for the story was taken from the red carpet stars of Old Hollywood, contributing to a collection of looks that focus on confidence, sexy and glamorous women who embrace their individual beauty.

Hair Story: Marrying vintage volume with sophistication and fun to create the looks on the cover and in “Modern Vintage Style”, Hughes relied on Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse, which gives the necessary lift to the hair, even when working on models who have a fine hair texture. Hughes also worked Moroccanoil Oil Treatment into the hair, which he finds works well on all hair types because it smoothes hair without weighing it down. To finish each look, Hughes reached for Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray for its flexible hold and shine. “It's a priceless combination when you’re changing the hair quickly.”

Collaborative Effort: Whenever he's working on a photo shoot, Hughes maintains a strong belief that the whole team, from hairstyling to makeup to fashion styling contributes their ideas collectively. For this shoot, Hughes says he “instantly saw that

The Bling Bold statement jewelry, including a gold lattice-style bracelet, was all that was needed to accent the sleek, body-skimming gowns.

we had the same eye and esthetic,” which is the secret ingredient to creating a cohesive story. Putting a modern spin on these glamorous looks also meant defining the eyes and lips, while shimmering gowns with lace detail added ultra-glamorous appeal.

The Looks Kevin Hughes trimmed the models’ hair prior to setting the hair in rollers, which gave it the movement he required to create the voluminous faux bob styles.

Behind the Scenes on Salon Magazine’s Cover Shoot

“Keep your mind open, I love getting fresh ideas from everyone on a photo shoot. Remember to look at what the camera is seeing; it’s not about every hair being perfect but rather how the look transfers on camera and sometimes, a little undone is better.” – Kevin Hughes, Moroccanoil Educator and Spokesperson

S

The Blow Out When the portable hairdryers weren’t getting the job done, Hughes and the team travelled next door to Eva’s Salon, where Eva, the salon’s original owner, graciously offered up her retro hairdryers.

Collectively, salon owners Joseph and Christina Delli Carpini have been doing hair for 15 years, and Christina joined Farouk as a hair artist. They came into hair from a love of dressing up people and taking cues from their visual strengths to go into hairstyling. At the salon, there is neither an exclusive colourist nor department—each staffer is well-rounded so that they can help any client for any need.

SALON BUSINESS

New Year’s Resolutions for Your Salon Start the new year off right with these five key business dos. Success in the salon goes beyond genius cutting skills or your flair as a colour whiz. Here are five easy tips that Ramsey Sayah, owner of Texture Hair Salon in Ottawa, shared with Salon Magazine to stay one step ahead of the game during the holiday season and beyond. Your clients will thank you.

1. Plan the year ahead “As a team manager, you should sit down regularly with your staff and plan for the quarter coming up. In our salon, we outline all the major holidays and implement strategies, fun promotions and events that will please the client. You have to include the client in your salon life! They look forward to a full experience when they come to see you.” It also helps the staff know what’s coming up, and they have a chance to get better in the process. “To achieve success, you have to have a plan,” stresses Sayah.

Every time your client comes in, have the receptionist confirm that their email is still correct. If you want to use your email list as a handy marketing tool, "It’s important that it contains a lot of names and that it’s current,” explains Sayah, whose thriving salon business includes two locations in Ottawa. In early December, simply send out holiday greeting e-cards thanking the client for their business over the past year.

3. Pre-book in December Give your clients a reason to book their appointments early, by adding a 20 per cent discount

coupon that can only be exchanged for services in January or February into the greeting card. “This ensures that you’ll have pre-booked appointments during the January slump so that you can better

behave in the salon.

• Clients are looking to you as their fashion gurus. You are the experts — be proud of it!

According to Sayah, everything happens during the consultation — not just a change of cut or colour. Even if you and your client have been working together for years, it’s very important that you never overlook the consultation process. It’s the perfect time to upsell a new colour service, talk about

• Leave the phone alone. According to

Lemieux, “There is nothing more offputting for clients than to see hairstylists glued to their smartphones.” Yes, even if you have FOMO (“Fear of Missing Out”) syndrome. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can wait!

5. Two words: "Its new!" “Professional hairstyling goes hand in hand with fashion,” notes Sayah. Your clients come to see you because they want to look good and find out what’s coming up in terms of trends. You are the beauty expert they trust. “We all love what’s new, so it’s always good to suggest a little bit of a change, even if it’s not that dramatic,” explains Sayah. “Sometimes by slightly changing the style and the colour, your client will feel a boost of self-confidence and you, in turn, will sell more products and colour.” So go ahead, have fun with what’s new and see how far these two simple words can take you in the new year.

Wide Open Spaces

Going beyond cuts and colour, Salon Deauville ups the wow factor with a full salon and spa experience in an open, multi-faceted space. By Ashley Kowalewski

experience, Claudia Iacono, owner of Salon Deauville Coiffure & Spa in Montreal, wanted to add a dose of freshness to the over-60-year-old salon.

Though Salon Deauville originally opened its doors in 1955, Iacono purchased and relocated it about five years ago, focusing on an open-concept design with a comfortable appeal and hoping to attract a younger clientele with the multi-faceted space. “We always heard ‘My mother used to go there’ and we wanted to change that and say you should come here, too.” Without wanting to appear too cold and uninviting, the design of the salon was meant to feel cozy. As Iacono explains, “The whole concept is to be very family-oriented. We didn’t want to make it a cold, trendy salon; we wanted [a warm space] that feels like home.” A fashion designer by trade and married to an interior designer, Iacono’s inspiration for the space came naturally, with Lanvain Design there to help with the details for the dimensions of each of the different areas of the salon. In addition to the colour and styling stations, Salon Deauville’s nearly 7,000-square-foot space also boasts a nail bar, pedicure station, makeup application counter, treatment rooms, café for staff and clients there for a spa day or in between multiple treatments and retail boutique space where clients can stock up on hair and nail products and peruse curated clothing and jewelry options.
