A Year In Review As 2021 has come to a close, I’ve been taking time to reflect on its trials and tribulations. For most of us, navigating a second year of a global pandemic has definitely taken its toll. Yet, through the rollercoaster of emotions we’ve experienced, many of us have come to realize the strength and resiliency of both ourselves and our industry. Salon owners, hairstylists and beauty pros have stepped up amidst the lockdowns, restrictions and virtual gatherings to remind us all that there’s no slowing us down! I’m sure many have felt the pressure to work harder—and smarter. Being limited by COVID’s impact has presented unique challenges across the board, not to mention the fact that so many of us continue to be physically disconnected from those around us. It’s also motivated a lot of us to get creative, think outside of the box and look at new ways to engage and connect with our clients and audience. With this in mind, I think now is a great time to ask yourself what you truly want to achieve once this pandemic finally subsides. We’ve been presented with an opportunity to learn from these recent hardships and identify opportunities for growth and improvement, and hopefully all that you’ve gleaned throughout 2020 and 2021 will continue to serve you well into the new year! Wherever the road ahead may take you, I encourage you to remember to have gratitude for all that you have. For us at Salon, we’re grateful for you—our readers—and your support of the magazine and the Contessa Awards. We can’t wait to continue sharing what’s next for us as we embark on an exciting new journey. Stay tuned!

The Ride of a Lifetime!

OFFICE MANAGER Cathy Donaghy cathy@salonmagazine.ca

The Contessa Awards are always a great night. Although virtual again this year, everyone brought their A-game to make it extra special. It was wonderful to have a few of our industry friends with us in-studio this year; from Palma N’Sheluvzit on the red carpet to salon owners and life partners, Derrick Rutherford and Julio Rodriquez, who offered some fun and colourful commentary throughout the show. I also have to give it up to our host (and my good friend), Bill Rowley, who continues to impress with such grace and poise on the Contessa stage. One aspect I’ve come to love about the virtual Contessas is seeing winners and their teams in their living rooms and salons, celebrating their wins together with such heartfelt speeches and raw emotion. What COVID has taught our industry is that we, too, can pivot and find new ways to reach our audience—whether it’s with the Contessas, hair shows or education. Virtual and live events can work beautifully together, and I’m sure we’ll continue to see more of this as the format evolves. This year I celebrated 25 years at Salon, and what a glorious ride it’s been! From my beginnings as a proud hairstylist from Newfoundland to becoming publisher and president of this incredible magazine—never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate this journey. Hands down—it’s been the job of a lifetime! Having the opportunity to meet with so many people from coast to coast, to learn about their incredible stories and experiences and to work with the fantastically talented Salon team while building such wonderful relationships along the way has been a gift. It’s with this privilege in mind that I announce a new chapter in my life’s book: I’ve decided to step down as publisher. I’ll remain at Salon as a consultant for the next few months, simply because I absolutely love being here, and our capable team will continue to lead and produce the magazine you all know and love. Salon continues to be an integral part of the Canadian professional beauty industry, serving as the most requested and trusted source of information. It’s truly been an honour. Thank you for everything!

CANADIAN HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR

Nicole Pede InStyle Salon & Spa, Aylmer, Ont. @nmpede

What inspired your winning collection? I was trying to take a little bit of inspiration from the tie-dye trend, which was very much on the runway and being worn by everyone. I feel like it was the pandemic colour—everyone was wearing it, even for jogging suits. I know it can sometimes appear tacky, so we tried to subtly put the tiedye influence in it. I wanted to find ways to add the effect in while making it look runway. How has competing (and winning) helped your career? It’s definitely given me a bunch of education opportunities, and it helps to fuel and market you to different salons and classes. People are excited to learn from you. My clients are also super excited about it. It can definitely push your career forward, especially if you’re looking to build your clientele. With this win, I’m hoping it will bring more opportunities to work with a magazine on a shoot. It’s something different than what we do behind the chair.

Fun Fact Nicole Pede enjoys putting together the wardrobe selections for her shoots. In fact, she gave this old black leather jacket an update with a few cans of spray paint!

CANADIAN SALON TEAM OF THE YEAR

Salon Gaboa Woodbridge, Ont. @salongaboa

What inspired your winning collection? I wanted something a bit more organic. I didn’t want it to be overly confined. I wanted to create something for ourselves. We were shooting for Contessas and wanted to win, however this year it was more about wanting to feel better. As a team, we were very anxious to do something positive, in light of the negativity surrounding us for almost two years now [due to the pandemic]. We wanted to focus and direct our energy to something positive, like the Contessas, which is a time for us to be experimental. And with that a natural creativity comes through.

Fun Fact FOR THE FULL WINNING COLLECTION AND Q&A INTERVIEW, VISIT SALONMAGAZINE.CA.

18 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

Their winning collection was a family affair, as Frank Dicintio worked on it with his wife, Adriana, along with his father-in-law, Pino, and mother-inlaw, Melina, who all work together at the salon.

Why was it important for you to enter with your team this year? The true beacon for me has always been my salon team. I wanted to celebrate what the salon has given me over the years. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary, and I first started entering the Contessas as soon as I opened the salon. The body of work coming out of the Contessas year after year is getting better and better. The bar continues to be raised every year and progressively moving forward in a positive way, and we just wanted to be part of it. — Frank Dicintio, owner of Salon Gaboa

ELITE MASTER HAIRSTYLIST & ONTARIO HAIRSTYLIST

Julie Vriesinga

Salon Entrenous, London, Ont. @julievriesinga What inspired your winning collections? When I start planning for a shoot, it’s very rare that I have a specific vision in mind. Usually, I start with runways—it could be current or older—to see what catches my eye. It can be a hairstyle, wardrobe piece or accessory. For my Elite Master collection, it’s very true to my typical style and where my eye is drawn; a little bit moodier, darker and textured. My goal with the Ontario collection was to bring me out of my comfort zone. It’s a lot more earthy with browns and warmer colours, with a vintage vibe to it. I wanted it to look and feel different, but still be true to me.”

Fun Fact While she now has six Contessa awards under her belt, Julie Vriesinga admits that she’s still too nervous to watch the Contessa Awards finalist announcement live. Instead, she waits for her friends and colleagues to message her to find out whether or not she made the cut.

What do you most enjoy about competing? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. When I first stepped into the salon I’m currently working in, I saw Heather Wenman’s Contessa photos hanging on the walls and said, “I want my pictures up there one day.” It just sparked an interest and excitement in me. It comes with a lot of failure first—I’ve lost more awards than I’ve ever won, but perseverance is key. If you really want it, you’ll keep going.

Salon Deauville Montreal @salondeauville

What does it mean to you to win this award with your team? This is the first time we’ve competed in the Contessas, and we couldn’t be happier to have won! I feel like the recognition will open doors to the creative side of the industry. It’s nice to be known more as an artist rather than just a business. My team won because of all of their hard work, and it was all thanks to them. What inspired this collection? After many months of introspection due to COVID, this collection was inspired by the goal of recharging and resetting to move forward. I find that [this experience] brought the team closer, and it opened the eyes of the other team members and showed them that competing is so exciting. It excites them a lot to see what they are capable of. I think when you compete it does opens other doors, more in fashion and in other sides of the hair industry. — Claudia Iacono, owner of Salon Deauville 22 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

MULTICULTURAL HAIRSTYLIST

Lukas Press Lukas Press, Toronto @lukaspress_

What inspired your collection? For me, history is very important—especially the history of hair. Every period has a different history of hair and I’m very fascinated by learning about it. I was fascinated by the Egyptian symbols. Around the time of Cleopatra, they were wearing lots of wigs. Wigs represented different statuses, with people from different cities. Wigs and hair were also designed for specific events and celebrations. I really wanted to present [that idea] in this collection.

Fun Fact

CONTESSA 2022 MULTICULTURAL HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR Lukas Press, Lukas Press, Toronto WARDROBE STYLING Kari Lynnbianchi PHOTOS Peter Nguyen

24 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

Originally training to become a dancer, Lukas Press always knew he wanted to be a performer. It wasn’t until after high school, when he shadowed in a hair salon in Israel, that he decided to become a hairstylist. He now works on hair for film and TV, including The Handmaid’s Tale!

Why did you decide to enter the Multicultural Hairstylist category this year? Multiculturalism is very important to me. I was born in Poland and when I was nine, I moved to Israel, where I grew up. In Israel, there’s a mix of different cultures and people—from Morocco, Ethiopia, etc. It’s beautiful! From a young age, I had the opportunity to learn about different cultures, and celebrating them. I think it’s very important to educate ourselves about different cultures.

SALON INTERIOR DESIGN

Studio So Lara Waterloo, Ont. @studiosolara

What was your vision and inspiration behind the design? It was inspired by a boutique hotel and Old Hollywood glam, with lighting on both sides of the mirrors. It’s a really soft lighting so it’s not in your face, but it resembles those cosmetic light bulbs that have been amped up. It’s vintage glam but in a modern age. I really love our colour lab and backsplash, which is made from a textured tile and is quite beautiful. I’m not a huge artwork person, but I really love texture, and the synergy of all design elements and subtle little touches combined are what make the space so well thought out. What does this win mean to you? I’ve been in the industry for 20 years, but this is the first Contessa that I’ve actually won. As a salon owner, I think it’s a triple threat. We have studios that do great hair, we have an amazing atmosphere and experience, and now, we’re a Contessa winner. Everyone wants to eat at a Michelin star restaurant, and from my perspective, a Contessa is the equivalent. It’s the highest accolade of our industry. — Lara Leckie, owner of Studio So Lara 26 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

Fun Fact This Waterloo-based salon is Lara Leckie’s third location, which opened in 2020, just three weeks before the first lockdown! Learning from the design of her first two locations, Leckie opted to build the sinks down the centre of the salon—with their colour lab and backsplash behind them—to prevent colour from staining the walls.

Contessa Winners — SESSION HAIRSTYLIST

Melita Campellone J’AIME! Coiffure, Montreal @melitaone What inspired your collection? I think this collection represents what I like best: I like things that are simple and clean, in all spheres of my life. I like when the beauty of the lines and beauty of the person are exposed. For this collection, I wanted a very feminine, strong look to the models. To me, this collection represents strength, with both masculinity and femininity. I like the white clothing without any jewelry or flashy clothes. I wanted it to be about the models and the hair. The hair is very simple, but it’s the shapes that made it stand out, and getting nice movement and capturing what I love about the beauty of women. What has been the key to your success in the beauty industry? I feel like I’ve been blessed throughout my career, just with things happening at the right time. I love what I do on the daily, I’m surrounded by good people, and I genuinely feel like I’ve found my place in the hair industry. So just being in that state has made me very lucky. I take the opportunities as they come and just ride the wave. 28 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

CANADIAN COLOURIST

Olab par Rodrigo, Montreal @rodrigohairdresser

What was the inspiration for your collection? I work a lot with my instincts, but I wanted to create something very graphic, combining different colour and haircutting techniques. Something that was soft and strong at the same time; the lines of the haircut are very strong, but the colours are soft. I think every collection needs to have a variety of colours and techniques. In this one, I have colours that are very soft and blended together, and I also have patchwork with blocks of colours. The colour has to suit the model, but it also has to be on-trend.

Fun Fact While the lockdowns were tough on many salon owners, Rodrigo Araneda used the time to open his new salon, Olab par Rodrigo, and enter competitions. As a third-generation hairstylist, competing is in his blood— both his father and grandfather have competed and won awards globally.

Why do you think competitions like the Contessa Awards are important? I think the Contessas are the most important platform right now to showcase your creativity and push your creative boundaries. The competition isn’t only about the trophy—it’s about competing with yourself. [Winning] gives me a lot of credibility with other hairstylists. It also gives me a lot of recognition, so other stylists become interested in my work. The Contessas have helped me become a better leader in my salon as well.

Contessa Winners — EMERGING HAIRSTYLIST

Robynn Graham

Suzette’s Salon, Innisfil, Ont. @hairbyrobyy How does it feel to win your first Contessa award? I feel very accomplished after all these years of entering, becoming a semifinalist and finalist, and now finally achieving a win. It’s pretty exciting! As a newer hairstylist and artist, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for my career. As a newer hairstylist, why do you think competitions are important and what advice do you have for other emerging hairstylists? It’s great exposure and it gets a lot of my clients involved. They know that I enter competitions and they see my work hanging up on the walls in the salon, so it becomes a talking point. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone because you never know where it will take you. Also, get involved in the industry and volunteer as much as you can. When I first started out, I volunteered a lot and even now I still do a lot of charity work. Just get as much hands-on experience as possible because it will really help to build your portfolio.

32 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

Fun Fact This collection was Robynn Graham’s first Contessa entry, which she decided to re-enter this year as part of the Contessa “Comeback” rule. She also wanted to pay homage to one of her models, Danika (pictured, right), who passed away in September.

AVANT GARDE HAIRSTYLIST

Kim-Chantal Garneau Coiffure CUT IN, Québec What was the inspiration for your collection? I get inspired by everything—a shape, an object or an image. This is why I chose Avant Garde as a category, because I can let my creative side run free. Since we’ve been forced to stop working several times in the last two years [due to the pandemic], I wanted to enter a collection that was cleaner, softer and pale, which explains my choice of colours and the clear accessories I used.

Kim-Chantal Garneau was mentored by past Contessa winner Marie Josée Dupuis, owner of Coiffure CUT IN. Their team includes long-time Contessa entrants, finalists and winners, who work on their collections together, offering a great learning opportunity for their newer staff.

How does it feel to win your second Contessa award? I’m so happy! Even though it was a virtual gala, the team got together for the event because several members of the team were finalists. I would encourage any stylist who needs a challenge to enter the competition, because it brings so much personal satisfaction, and it makes your clients curious. Whether you win or not, it’s a great personal challenge.

MEN’S HAIRSTYLIST

Tyana Nichole Brush Salon, Vancouver @tyananichole

What was the inspiration for your collection? Originally, I wanted it to be like the fashion police or high-fashion soldiers, but it ended up being a bit more raw, so I incorporated the army theme with black military jackets. My vision for men’s hair is always to do something classic with a twist. When I first created this collection [in 2015], the K-Pop bowl cuts, perms or blowout fades weren’t super popular. This year, I felt that this collection would be more accepted. It fits in perfectly with what’s happening right now in fashion around the world. What advice do you have for people in the industry, especially women, when it comes to competing? Don’t create a box for yourself. As women, there’s always a feeling that there’s a ceiling above our heads or walls around us, so not allowing that to stop or stifle you, and continuing to break through by doing what you believe in is key. You can win just by putting your work out there. Stop listening to what people might be saying around you. We’re in an era in which people are looking for something different. Don’t create limitations for yourself. Focus on artists that don’t allow themselves to have limits and are always pushing for something bigger and better.

TEXTURE HAIRSTYLIST

Mandy Rogers

Hunt & Gather Hair Company, Victoria, B.C. @huntandgatherhairco_mandy How do you feel about your first Contessa win? I’m still completely blown away! I had pictures of Contessa collections that inspired me on my walls when I was going to hair school and it’s always been a goal of mine to win. You spend all this time honing your craft, and to have the opportunity to do these types of creative collections and see them acknowledged is just so incredible to me.

Fun Fact While in hair school, Mandy Rogers was also studying nursing. She worked as a nurse for two years while doing hair on the side before deciding to pursue it full-time.

What was the inspiration behind this collection? I really love art. When you look at something that’s deemed art deco, it looks really classy and high fashion, but it also has an almost futuristic feel to it. I thought incorporating an art deco feel would help the collection stand out while giving me the opportunity to work with some really odd textures. It’s much more about thinking about the hair as a living, moving thing. When I’m working with textures like this, it’s like I’m working with something that’s alive, and it lights me up inside. I just think it’s so fun to play with hair in that way.

Contessa Winners — MASTER COLOURIST

Michelle Pargee Independent, Sechelt, B.C. @michellepargee

What was the inspiration behind this collection? I’m always trying to do something different. I wanted to try things that were more muted, dusty and filtered, and maybe not quite as intensely pigmented. I wanted to discover what that would look like and I wanted something a little bit more sophisticated. I actually had a hard time holding myself back; muting the colours enough and giving them a metallic finish so they didn’t look like they were too pure and too bright was difficult. I really like the way it came out and I like the understated muted tones of it. After being in the industry for as long as you have, what keeps you motivated? I recently came back to doing hair more behind the chair during the pandemic, because normally I’m travelling almost full-time for teaching. Since getting back with clients, I forgot how much I loved just being with people. COVID has taught me that the connection with clients is really the core of what we do. We have such a huge impact on people’s lives, and I think sometimes we don’t even really understand how much we do. 40 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

SASKATCHEWAN/ MANITOBA HAIRSTYLIST

Josie Vilay

Hairology Studio, Winnipeg @josievilay What inspired your collection? I was inspired by the movie Maleficent with Angelina Jolie. In the photo with the model wearing the feathers, I really wanted to create hair that resembled the headpiece [from the movie]. I was also inspired by shapes, silhouettes, and colours, and wanted to create more of a moodier collection. Even though I wanted to do something with a dark mood, I still wanted the pops of colour, so that’s where that neon green came from.

CONTESSA 2022 SASKATCHEWAN/MANITOBA HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR Josie Vilay, Hairology, Winnipeg MAKEUP Mhei Alos Ngoc PHOTO Rejean Brandt

42 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

Fun Fact As a busy salon owner and mother, Josie Vilay still makes time to stay creative. While she’s a trendsetter on social media, she doesn’t tend to find her inspiration online. In fact, she says one of her favourite ways to boost her creativity is by watching the variety of colours used in kids’ TV shows.

This is your second Contessa win. Do you think winning has helped your career? I think it has definitely helped put my name out there and introduced me to different manufacturers and companies. It makes my name more recognizable. For me, it’s important because I’m a salon owner, so it’s nice when I get recognized on a platform of this size. It boosts my team and makes them want to achieve more than being behind the chair. It gives us some recognition within our industry and in our community.

QUEBEC HAIRSTYLIST

Sophie Tessier

Salon La Rousse, Montreal @sophielarousse What was the inspiration for your collection? I wanted a clean collection with very definite lines. This year, I took advantage of the fact that you could submit previous collections. For the look with the collar effect, I used invisible hair pins. I took small hair strands that I wrapped around a hot flat iron and then let them cool down. Then, I brushed the hair to create a “fur collar” effect. For the other two hairstyles, I inserted shapes in the hair to create the volume. Why is competing in the Contessa Awards important to you? I’ve been entering the Contessas for several years. I’ve always been a finalist, but this is my first win. I love to compete and push my limits—creating allows me to refine my art. In my career path, I’ve had the opportunity to work with great names in hair, and it was Anna Pacitto and Stéphane Scotto Di Cesare who played a role in my desire to enter competitions. They are renowned and inspiring stylists I greatly admire.

Fun Fact Rather than reentering her past work as is, Sophie Tessier decided to combine two different collections that she thought paired well together “because the lines were in perfect harmony.”

BRITISH COLUMBIA HAIRSTYLIST

Simon James

Style Lab Headquarters, Vancouver @simon.james.hair What was the inspiration behind this collection? My inspiration generally comes from moods—from an emotion and a feeling. This collection is called Pop Couture because of its pop culture influence, but as with everything I tend to do, there’s a little bit of a moody, darker undercurrent through my work. I think it was just that dynamic nature of having bright colours with something that felt a little bit darker; a darker background and darker lighting. Having that high contrast of a bright pop of colour to offset the look creates something very different. It’s nice to see those opposing ideas co-exist in one beautiful image.

FOR THE FULL WINNING COLLECTION AND Q&A INTERVIEW, VISIT SALONMAGAZINE.CA.

Fun Fact Since both of his parents are hairstylists, Simon James grew up in salons where he swept hair and helped in the backroom. He would even browse through the pages of Salon long before he decided to become a hairstylist!

CONTESSA 2022 BRITISH COLUMBIA HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR Simon James, Style Lab Headquarters, Vancouver MAKEUP Kate Nicol, Vanessa Westerager PHOTO Kale Friesen

You’ve won a Contessa award before. What does this win mean to you? Winning British Columbia Hairstylist is a little bit different since it’s one of the categories that I’ve looked at every year as a young stylist. The people who won when I was coming up were some of the people I looked up to—like Edwin Johnston, and Chad Taylor from Moods Hair Salon. They were really influential in B.C., so I always gravitated towards that category. For me, it’s kind of cool to be on the same level as the people that I was always looking up to at the beginning stages of my career.

Contessa Winners —

ALBERTA HAIRSTYLIST

Jesse Ervin

LUUM Salon, Lethbridge @jesseervinhair What inspired your collection? I was really into Derek Ridgers’ photography at the time and have always loved the punk/fringe characters he photographed in London in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. He seemed to capture the kids on the fringe of society; the interesting ones with cool haircuts like the Chelsea, mohawks, shaved heads and DIY cuts. Christopher Brooker is not known by many of today’s hairstylists, but those who are aware of him would likely say he is one of the most influential hairdressers of all time. I was lucky enough to have been shared his body of work by my first mentor, Tristin Morrison, while I was in school. I wanted to pay tribute to his work while also attempting my own takes on two of my favourite works he created: the Thatch and Quiff. Why do you think competitions like the Contessas are important? Competition is always a good thing—it pushes people to work harder, create, educate and keep themselves inspired. Competition has done wonders for my career. Competing has been important to me as I really get to explore my creative freedom. After winning, I started getting recognized by the brand I worked for and received some of the best work experiences I’ve ever had in my life.

ATLANTIC HAIRSTYLIST

Chelsea Sutherland Chelsea Laine Salon and Colour Bar, New Glasgow, N.S. @chelsealainesalonandcolourbar How does it feel to win Atlantic Hairstylist for the second year in a row? It feels surreal! We all enter to win and to feel the thrill of it, but it almost feels like more pressure when you have something to lose and when you’re defending the title. You definitely don’t win as often as you enter, so it’s just so validating and exciting every single time. I feel so grateful because I know what it’s like to put all of the work in and not have it recognized. I think it’s important to have something to be proud of because it can’t always be about the win. What was your inspiration for your collection? The music industry is one of the last to get back to the same capacity it had been before COVID, and I think large outdoor music festivals are one thing that’s really being missed by people. Obviously for the music, but also for the fashion and the outlet that people use those festivals for. Tons of people just go to dress up really wild and express themselves in that way. That was what I had in mind with the concept for this collection.

46 salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022

Fun Fact Chelsea Sutherland organized her Contessa-winning photo shoot during the pandemic. While she was initially forced to cancel it during the first lockdown, she reorganized it once things opened again. Since restrictions were still strict at the time, she was able to register her shoot as an event, which was approved by her province’s Public Health.

CANADIAN NAIL ARTIST

Nargis Khan Tips Nail Bar, Toronto @nailsfromnars

What inspired your winning collection? It was ’90s inspired— specifically ’90s pop music. I grew up in the ’90s so it’s definitely very nostalgic, and when I did the collection, I feel like it was starting to become a trend whereas now everything ’90s is huge in fashion. It was a modern take, of course, but a mix of all my favourite things from that decade. The collection was also inspired by Madonna because she was definitely the pop queen of that time. Why do you think the Contessa Awards are important for nail artists? I think it definitely helps to get more notoriety for the industry because nails, unfortunately, can sometimes be an afterthought when it comes to editorial, or even in general for some people. It’s the last thing that people might think of, even though nails are a major accessory since your hands are showcased quite a lot. I feel like it definitely helps us to be recognized, and the competition also motivates us to do better, to stay ontrend, and shows that we are just as important as anybody else in the beauty industry.

Fun Fact During the lockdowns, Nargis Khan remained busy as she worked on press-on nails, which her salon retailed during the pandemic. She was also able to do some editorial work for film and TV.

MAKEUP ARTIST

Marika D’Auteuil Marika D’Auteuil, Montreal @lapetitevengeance

What was the inspiration for your collection? The three looks were initially inspired by different things—one is very soft and focused on colour theory (the harmony of blue and orange), another is like a modern take on a Geisha and the last one is very inspired by the 1920s. Most of the time, I get inspired by the models individually. I love to create characters. It’s not just about cosmetics or making someone look pretty. It’s about telling a story; it’s about making people feel different things when they look at the images.

During the lockdown, Marika D’Auteuil took the time to develop an online class and create her Contessa-winning collection. As travel restrictions open up, she hopes to resume her Masterclass tour in South America, Europe and Russia in 2022.

What does this win mean to you? I think we all needed something exciting to happen after these past two years, and getting to create freely while surrounding myself with other like-minded artists was so therapeutic. I needed to challenge myself and also challenge the upcoming participants for the next years of the competition to make their collections more diverse and showcase beauty from different ethnicities, races and backgrounds. The Contessa Awards are a one-of-a-kind opportunity to connect with amazing hair artists and photographers from all over the country, and to develop an artistic relationship that will help you grow in your career.

Manuel Mon

Contessa Winners —

INTERNATIONAL HAIRSTYLIST Manuel Mon Estilistas, Oviedo, Spain @manuelmonoficial How does it feel to win International Hairstylist of the Year? I feel immense joy, both personally and professionally. It’s also a source of pride that a Spanish hairdresser is recognized as an international stylist. Having Spanish stylists recognized internationally is a great motivation. What inspired your winning collection? Origami is a creative art practice that emphasizes the sensitivity of form and the accuracy of a working plan. Balanced and natural images have been created without seams, cuts or artificial joints, elevating origami to a manual art. Like the paperwork format, meticulous fold patterns have been formed, with planes, crisscrossings and pure and clean finishes, with artistic symmetry and beauty.

Contessa Winners — THE JOHN STEINBERG AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

Crawford Master Stylists Ltd. Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. @crawford.m.s

Tell us about the Salons Against Domestic Abuse (SADA) fund. It started in 2018 when we had a client come into the salon and I noticed she had strangulation marks around her neck, and we knew we had to get her help. I created Salons Against Domestic Abuse, a fund through the Fort Saskatchewan Families First Society, which polices the funds and gives them to victims who need to flee their situations right away. During COVID, our salon created our own line of magnetic lashes and sales exploded! We held an event and donated $10 from every sale, which raised more than $19,000 for SADA. Domestic violence was on the rise [during the pandemic] because of all the restrictions and having to stay at home. It’s becoming such a common thing; I think we all know someone who has been through it. We have to help get people to safety and break down some of these barriers in order for help to be more accessible. Why is giving back important to you and your team? What advice do you have for other salons? We need to pay it forward. People are spending their hard-earned money in our establishments and we need to give back to people who give to us. Donate to a cause you’re passionate about. Think about something in the world that inspires you to make change and go from there. It doesn’t have to be huge. We all want to make a big impact but start small with something you’re really passionate about and watch how that passion will make it grow in time. — Lisa Crawford, owner of Crawford Master Stylists Ltd.

FREESTYLE

Daniel Grieco

Salon Gaboa, Woodbridge, Ont. @danielgrieco75 What was the inspiration behind your winning photo? I wanted to do something on both ends of the scale and bring them all together as one. It’s taking something so creative and out of the box while still having some normalcy in there. I went with a really striking model and chose to make her eye colour the focus. By highlighting the area all around her eyes and creating a nice, geometric shape that featured straight lines against the shattered, solid blocks of colour, I was able to play with textures and the different elements of the hair. Why do you think competitions like the Contessas are important? It’s important for both the individual stylist and the industry as a whole. The Contessas are looked at as the Olympics for hair in Canada. It’s an event that brings everyone together to celebrate, and it doesn’t matter the company you’re from, if you’re a freelancer, at this salon or that salon, if you’re located downtown or uptown. People come together and celebrate the best of the best. In turn, there’s self-gratification, as well, because you know you’ve poured your heart and soul into [your entry]. It goes hand in hand.

Fun Fact While this is his first Contessa win, Daniel Grieco has worked in the industry since he was 17 years old, participating in hair competitions and working at New York Fashion Week.

HAIR Darren Ambrose COLOUR Clayde Baumann WARDROBE STYLING Jackie Ambrose PHOTOGRAPHY Eddie Adamson VIDEO EDITING Bob Camack (MendelMacStudios)

| Inspired by Clockwork Orange, Ambrose and his team wanted to create a specific image and language unique to a teenage gang, with liveable hair with texture and shapes that complemented their Pantone colour palette. As the models walked through the streets, Ambrose says people would stop to take photos and ask if they’re in a music band. “It just shows you what we do in the industry—we help create that individual image to help you stand out.” PHOTO: D&J AMBROSE

The presentation included a range of ’90s-inspired precision cuts, including texturizing and razor cutting. For the colour, melting and blocking techniques were used, along with “roll ‘n dye” pigmentation where “areas are covered with an eclectic mix of colour—like how you paint on one side of a piece of paper, then fold it over and smudge them together.”

Darren Ambrose works closely with his wife, Jackie (pictured, right), to plan out the wardrobe styling, and his salon’s head creative colourist, Clayde Baumann (pictured, middle), on the colour palette. |

| The presentation was filmed in central London—on the Millennium Bridge and the South Bank near the Thames. “These locations are iconic and full of character, helping us to have that moving backdrop with attitude,” says Ambrose. “London is a cool, historic city that still surprises us with the sights and details you find around every corner.” FOR THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH RODRIGO ARANEDA AND TO WATCH THE PRESENTATION, VISIT SALONMAGAZINE.CA.

by Rodrigo Araneda for Matrix

For Matrix’s 2022 Contessa presentation, Canadian artistic director Rodrigo Araneda wanted to showcase a wide range of beauty looks in a celebration of inclusivity. Featuring models of different ethnicities, genders, ages and body types in a rooftop runway show in Montreal, the presentation demonstrated the importance of breaking boundaries and embracing one’s individuality.

Araneda titled his presentation Hairvolution as a reference to the world we’re living in today. “I wanted a name that shows that I’m trying to change things. It’s the revolution of hair and of humans,” he says. “The world is changing a lot right now. It’s a revolution but with a lot of respect. It’s a revolution of how we see beauty.”

| Filmed last fall at the Belvedere, a federal building at the Old Port of Montreal, the presentation didn’t include professional models. Instead, Araneda opted to include his clients and people he knew. “I wanted to represent people in real life,” he says. “In the salon we have all kinds of beauty and I think it’s time to start showing that.”

Fun fact Araneda says they included a real butterfly on the mouth of the model with coral hair “to represent women who can’t speak their reality.”

The presentation began with a montage of historical moments in fashion, beauty and the world relating to beauty standards and norms. “Today, we often only see one standard of beauty. It was very important to me to do a presentation with a message behind it—a message of inclusivity and love, showing that there are so many kinds of beauty,” says Araneda. “We are all humans and I really wanted to show that it’s not only about beauty— it’s about the people.”

Araneda hopes people will learn and be inspired by his presentation. “I want people to understand that beauty does not only look one way, and I hope they keep in mind that we are in a process of change,” he says. “There are so many kinds of beauty and it’s very important that our industry keeps that in mind, too. No matter your body shape or size, your height, or if you’re all the colours of the rainbow, no matter what, you are beautiful, and everyone is beautiful.”

More Glitter, Less Litter Find out why Morgan Taylor’s Peel-Off Glitter Lacquer will be your new best friend this season. As the winter marks a time for clients to “bring out the bling,” glitter tends to be a popular choice. However, for both nail techs and clients, it can be a hassle to remove. Morgan Taylor has launched four of their glitter colours (Fame Game, Grand Jewels, Sweetest Thing and Rare as Rubies), along with a Top Coat in a formula that allows you (or your client) to peel off to remove. Not only do the new polishes help you save removal time in the salon, they're also a perfect add-on service or take-home product for clients who want to spice up their manicures this season. salonmagazine.ca / January+February 2022 65
