THE REVLON PROFESSIONAL BRANDS SALON MASTERS SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH IS: Donna Beyak launched The Men’s Room in 2002, which has since expanded from 1000 sq. ft. and 5 stylists to 3000 sq. ft and 18 staff. With now 30+ years in the industry, Donna joined the American Crew team in 2002, and was invited to the All Star Team level in 2008. Since then, she has had the opportunity to travel all over Canada, the United States and several countries overseas. The Men’s Room joined the Revlon Professional Brands loyalty flagship program in 2012, as well as landed Adelai Romphf as a part-owner in their expansion. Adelai mastered American Crew MENSWORK™ Method 01 and 02 to place her on TeamCrew Canada and later USA, while also being an avid competitor in NAHA, Contessa, Mirror Awards and the global American Crew All Star Challenge. They have since been guests at three Style Masters Shows in Madrid, Lisbon and Rome, plus received merchandising support to help the salon stay current and beautiful. Education is at the heart of The Men’s Room, with many prized Revlon Professional Brands educators within its doors. Although their core clientele is in the booming men’s segment, they also boast a secret treasure for their female clientele lead by one NAHA winner, Marlo Steenman. Revlon Professional Brands is committed to helping stylists follow their passion and succeed, by providing the support and tools you need to excel at your craft. Who Are You Powered By?

DREAM BIG AND MAKE IT HAPPEN

C

elebrating the stars of the Canadian professional beauty industry for the 27th annual Contessa Awards, Salon Magazine rolled out

the red carpet and honoured the best in the business, from industry veterans to its rising stars. From the whisky bar sponsored by American Crew to Unite’s photo booth, the cocktail party kicked off the live social media wall sponsored by Revlon Professional with more than 100 posts per hour. Along with the party action, guests also gave back in a big way by making a charitable donation in support of the Look Good Feel Better program in exchange for a part of the Contessa Finalists’ Gallery. Here’s your chance to relive some of the excitement from the night!

This collection was an unfinished beauty story, showing a girl getting ready to go out, but the ‘unfinished’ part was very personal because I don’t really think my story in the industry is done yet. I’ve worked with my team on a lot of creative editorial projects and they’re really good friends. There’s no better person to help showcase your work because we can encourage and bring out the best in one another.

I am very grateful for my business partner, Linda Lapointe, who isn't a stylist herself but who lets me and my team of hairstylists go crazy every year putting together a collection! It takes a lot of resources and you never know if you’re going to win, but I love exchanging ideas with my team and seeing whose strengths are going to help create a salon team collection.

MASTER COLOURIST of the year

HEIDI KENNEY I come from a small town, so obviously it doesn’t matter where you’re from because talent can come from anywhere. I’m so proud to represent the Maritimes. I think the Internet has changed the way hairstylists work because we now have the ability to see what’s going on anywhere in the world, so whether you’re in a small town or a big city, you can be inspired and create [winning] collections.

ANN-MARIE GOUPIL My brother, Pete Goupil, who cut the hair, and I wanted to step out of our comfort zone with this collection, and we used a lot of fine pastel strands superimposed on one another. We focused on the colour, and that’s why the makeup is very fresh and natural. The look is very ‘summer festival.’ We even drew the freckles on the model's face by hand to achieve this.

PALMA N’SHELUVZIT I’ve been working with my father for more than 13 years and he has always been so supportive, no matter what I come up with. I had come back from California with the idea for this collection, and I was at the salon braiding and trying to figure out a new technique. My dad was there, not only providing support but also giving me guidance and suggesting that I try something different.

MEN’S HAIRSTYLIST of the year

DOROTHY TSANG This shoot was done in London, and it took about two weeks to find our models and put it together. To me, men’s looks should be really simple and basic. I love simplicity, so that’s what I did: something natural that can be worn every day.

MARILYN VENDITTELLI I remember being at the Contessas last year and dreaming of being on stage—it’s unbelievable how one year has changed so much with guidance from the right people. I listened to my mentors and looked at past entries, but I took a classic contemporary feel—I wanted to take something old and make it look new. There’s a whole world outside the salon, and competitions are a great way to get yourself out there to push your limits and challenge yourself to do something different.

DAVID VENDITTELLI

The jewelry was really the starting point for this collection: I wanted the hair to match the different colours. I was blessed to meet [Contessa finalist] Michelle Pargee at Goldwell Hairvolution last year and she invited us to assist her in a shoot. Then she helped us shoot our own collection—it’s because of her mentorship that we’re here today. To see the complete collection go to SalonMagazine.ca/Contessa.

NAOMI MISU I love bold prints and designs, so the first thing that came to me was a ’70s theme. I’ve always been a ’70s baby, so after one design came to me, the rest came together. It’s been amazing to work with such a great team—it’s so much fun going to work every day because of them.

JOHANNA LIBBEY For this collection, I was really into unibrows, so Frida Kahlo was obviously part of that inspiration. The collection is really about strong women and a different take on what beauty means. CHRISTOPHER ASTA My inspiration came from the movie Jurassic World, so I meshed it together with Avatar and came up with a theme. HAIR EXTENSIONS ARTIST of the year

CHANTEL ALLEN Chantel Allen, Pro Club 11, Edmonton Makeup: Hamana’s Artistry Styling and photo: Shelby Deep proclub11yeg

I’ve been working with extensions since I was in high school. A few years ago I decided I wanted to open my own salon, which focused on hair extensions—the initiative has grown so much in the past few years. For this collection, I went with a very abstract version of Disney princesses. We had the idea, but then it changed so much—I wanted to do something a bit different.

CRYSTAL DAWN MALCHUK I wanted to do more of an organic collection, keeping things natural and paying more attention to the hair than the wardrobe, which is why we just had the eucalyptus leaves. WALLFLOWER In order to bring together a Contessa segment seamlessly, each aspect needs to be well executed. How does such intricate and detailed work deliver a big on-stage impact? 3-D flowers, of course. Liliya Leheta and John Nguyen, CND Canada educators, created the show-stopping nails for the Schwarzkopf Professional Flowers segment that blended perfectly with the team’s creative vision without hiding among the roses. Going off of their imaginations and just the theme, “We sculpt each petal by hand, using liquid and powder acrylic and blend it together with CND Additives for a customized colour. Then all of the petals are assembled onto the nails to create the flowers.” – Liliya Leheta, CND Canada educator

the two created the eight sets of nails that would capture the essence of the segment perfectly.

SMOOTH SAILING Banish winter frizz with Pureology Smooth Perfection. Heat styling and the evil winter static monster have a way of nixing a good hair day before it even begins, but they don’t have to. Pureology Smooth Perfection offers an antidote to the frizz-fuelled bad hair day by smoothing out strands with a trifecta of shea butter and camellia and sesame oils while protecting hair from heat styling and locking in colour. The six-piece lineup includes the hero product, Smooth Perfection Lightweight Smoothing Lotion, for added frizz control and humidity protection in case your clients are heading south for the winter.

ROUGH IT UP Boost your style game with Moroccanoil’s new Texture Clay, a roughstyling product that adds a strong, buildable hold and a matte, never sticky finish.
