s I write this, only two weeks after our 20th annual Contessa gala, our team is already talking about next year. After all, in a few weeks we’ll need to determine a unifying theme for Contessa 21, start scoping out venue options, looking at colour palettes, thinking about talent and officially begin the planning process all over again. Like many of you Contessa junkies out there, I often talk about the show as being a 365-day affair that never completely goes away. But after this year’s anniversary party I may have to stop saying that Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards take a year of preparation. As I saw some of my all-time favourite Contessa collections brought to life (page 16), or watched our host, Bill Rowley, unleash a hilarious history lesson on the Canadian professional beauty industry (see it again on salon52.ca), it really struck me: our show on November 2 was actually 20 years in the making. A true creative, like an Edwin Johnston, for example, isn’t just born over a twelve-month period. The calibre of Edwin’s winning 2009 Session collection (page 46) can only be attributed to years of practice and photographic work. Donna Dolphy, whose creative inclinations can be seen throughout the 10 years she’s been shooting for Contessa, is another example. (See her winning collection on page 50.) With this in mind, I can’t help wondering where a young talent like Danille Mandap, 2009 Newcomer and Saskatchewan/Manitoba Hairstylist of the Year (page 56), will be in five, 10, or even 20 years. It’s really upon the talent of stylists like her that the future of our industry, and the future of the Contessas, will be built. On a personal note, I must share how excited I am to take over the editor-in-chief desk here at Salon Magazine. I’m deeply honoured by the kind and welcoming words I’ve received over the past few weeks, and I look forward to working with you as you continue to shape Canada’s beauty industry.

his special collector’s edition salutes the amazing work of the 2009 Contessa winners along with the spectacular gala night on November 2. It was a sold-out event, and you could feel the electricity in the room. We had amazing Team Contessa presentations from Collega for Aveda and Sebastian Professional along with a retrospective of the past 20 years presented by Schwarzkopf, KMS California, Salon Magazine and salon52.ca—featuring some of Canada’s finest and most respected talent. Check out the vibe on pages 16 through 34 or be sure to go to salon52.ca for the show’s highlights. After the gala, Salon Magazine hosted the second annual Contessa Unplugged, where Vivienne Mackinder, Damien Carney and Edwin Johnston offered up their views on creativity. It was truly fantastic to watch these outstanding industry leaders share ideas in a most humble and inspirational presentation. It reconfirmed for me why I’m still in this business. As we kick off the new year, I’m delighted to welcome Morella Aguirre as our new editor-in-chief. Morella is no stranger to our readers—she joined us four years ago after graduating from York University. Her love for the job showed early on; she was a quick study and earned plenty of responsibility and respect under the tutorship of our past editor-in-chief, Stephen Puddister. Stephen will be missed, however he’s done a wonderful job of grooming Morella for her new role. Morella has racked up a number of important accomplishments at Salon Magazine. She played a key role in the development of our award-winning website, salon52.ca. And along with her regular duties as managing editor, she has done a stellar job of coordinating the entertainment segments at the Contessas. Morella has developed a keen eye for style along with an excellent understanding of the business of beauty. She and our team are constantly searching for new and creative ways to deliver important information to you, our reader. I would also like to welcome Melissa Brazier and Anupa Mistry as new additions to our editorial team. As you might imagine, our team has been busy planning the editorial lineup for the coming year. I encourage you to send us your ideas and feedback so we can deliver inspiration and education in these uncertain times. I wish you all a happy and successful 2009.

Gala

T

urning 20 was a breeze for Contessa when over 1,000 guests packed into the Grand Ballroom at Toronto’s Sheraton Centre Hotel to help celebrate. The November 2 bash placed special emphasis on Contessa’s storied past, from emcee Bill Rowley’s rant about complex personnel changes at the professional level over the years to a retrospective stage presentation featuring five unforgettable Contessa collections. Whether you were there and the wine messed with your memory or you couldn’t make it at all, here’s what happened, down to the minute.

23 Awards in 2hr 10min

Guests begin arriving and flock to the bar, the perfect chance to check out the adjacent Contessa Gallery featuring all of the finalist collections. Salon Magazine’s Tina Christopoulos interviews key guests like Damien Carney and Vivienne Mackinder on the red carpet, and the Contessa photo booth is taken over by well-coiffed posers.

7:02 p.m. Four rowdy samba drummers make their way through the ballroom, signalling the start of the show.

7:04 p.m.

Seventy-five stylists take to the stage during the finalist walkout. Edwin Johnston, Contessa 19 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, impresses all by striking a pose—and, for the record, no one fell.

Winner of three awards in one night, Newfoundland native marjorie clarke was thrilled to take home what she quipped was her first hat trick. inspired by the belief that stylists should always be true to themselves, her collection—titled elegance— focuses on monochromatic colours and precision styling with clean shapes and lines. “it’s about bringing out the absolute potential in every person who sits in your chair and the potential in yourself,” said clarke, soon after accepting her third and final award of the night.

Canadian Salon Team of the Year moods hair salon

although moods hair salon is a small team of six, they packed a lot of power at Contessa 20. The team’s success is a result of open creative dialogue, a zerotolerance policy for gossip or negativity, and encouragement of advanced learning. Coowner Chad Taylor says for this particular collection, “i felt strong leadership was helpful with the process, but the techniques used with each style were the responsibility of the individual.” his partner, Tania Becker, adds, “We don’t have any weak members on our team. Everyone is extremely motivated, positive and skilled.” For complete collection go to salon52.ca.

British Columbia Hairstylist of the Year christopher deagle

“after years of straight hair, we are now in the age of texture,” says christopher deagle, 2009 British columbia hairstylist of the Year, whose winning photos are also part of this year’s salon team collection. “the inspiration for my collection came from playing with a variety of curl while maintaining strong lines throughout the perimeter.” Being a stylist for the past four years, and a contestant on canada’s superstar hair challenge, deagle notes, “i was determined, but i didn’t think i would win so soon! there’s so much talent in B.c. and i’m proud to win this award.”

2009

Session Hairstylist of the Year edwin johnston

having won Canadian and B.C. hairstylist of the Year at Contessa 19, edwin johnston says the importance of this particular category is that “it’s what clients identify with. it’s the kind of work you put up on your wall and have a client say, ‘do my hair like that.’” the concept behind this collection, shot in a suite at toronto’s drake hotel, was a girly boudoir aesthetic. johnston says, “editorial always comes back to classic techniques. it’s about using these techniques but working them in different ways to make it new.”

Amongst the cheers and whoops, lenny ferri was literally jumping for joy. for a collection inspired by colour that’s bold and larger than life, ferri says he used a lot of block colouring and tone-ontone techniques while always keeping things vibrant and bright. A previous Contessa 16 winner for Ontario Hairstylist of the year, ferri says this particular award “puts a staple on my career, so my kids can say, ‘One day i want to be like my dad.’” for models’ before photos, go to salon52.ca.

Men’s Hairstylist of the Year phillip elliott

Seeing Men’s hairstylist of the Year as the most challenging category, phillip elliott believes his winning collection is the perfect medium to showcase his skills. Surviving the failure of one of his models to show up for the shoot, elliott persevered, carefully blow-drying each style into place using a round brush. taking inspiration from the pompadour style circa James Dean, with sleek sides and lots of volume on top, elliott comments that the future of men’s styling is all “going back to the past.”

Saskatchewan/Manitoba & Newcomer Hairstylist of the Year DANILLE MANDAP

After completing high school with a diploma in hairstyling, Danille Mandap began her apprenticeship at the tender age of 17. Fully licensed and eager to get started by 19, Mandap—now in the industry for five years—is thrilled to be taking home two Contessa awards. Texture Hairstylist of the Year LISA WATRICH

For Lisa Watrich, choosing texture as the focal point of her collection was essential because “I love movement. I love the whole flow of the hair.” Inspired by advanced training she received in Paris last spring, Watrich was heavily influenced by the European experience—everything from the architecture to the window displays. She adds that “texture is something I’ve always done. When everyone is going flat and straight, I’m adding body and movement to hair.” For models’ before photos, go to salon52.ca.

After beginning his education at Toni & Guy, John Jen Hoe Chong returned home to Hong Kong to attend the Rever Hair Academy, where he honed his craft and learned to style various types of hair. Chong, who services a multicultural clientele in downtown Edmonton, wanted this collection, Pure White Out, to be very commercial. After spending a few months carefully choosing his models, he went with a variety that allowed him to really flex his creative muscles. 60

Makeup Artist of the Year JULIE COULOMBEDUKE “I was focusing on diversity in this collection, showing my ability to work with different ethnicities,” says Julie Coulombe-Duke of her first Contessa win. Using very little styling, the Ontario-based freelance artist emphasized a light and dewy aesthetic, something she achieved through an airbrushing foundation technique. She adds, “I wanted the focus to be on the makeup. I didn’t want to take away from that.”

Pamela Clough’s collection displays strong primary colours, slight changes of hue and unique shapes inspired by her interest in the history of fashion and hair. She says, “My collection reflected several eras, from the Victorian age up to the 1920s.” As a first-time Contessa entrant, she found this category the most intriguing. Representing Quebec’s reputation for daring hairstyling, Pereque’s techniques were definitely not the norm. Whether it was weaving hair with a crochet needle through a piece of mesh fabric or folding the hair into aluminum foil and pressing it with a flat iron, Pereque’s main goal was to showcase the diversity of his talent.

strolling through downtown Montreal late last year, crystal brown spotted an intriguing photograph in an art gallery’s window display. the image—shot by French photographer serge lutens—became brown’s inspiration for this winning collection. “I was drawn to how feminine and elongated the photo was and how its black/white contrast was soft yet sharp. Asked to share a bit about their space, Volovik immediately and definitively states, “It works.” Calandrino chuckles and adds, “It’s an artsy, loft-type space with a minimalist feel so there are no distractions and it’s all about the hair.” The decor of their fairly new salon has helped them attract clients who are willing to let the stylists’ creativity flow.

Contessa Unplugged

By Anupa Mistry

After the big Contessa bash, three top stylists hit up a more intimate affair

s a l o n > january+february 09

Unlike Carney and Mackinder, Johnston is a salon owner and works very regularly behind the chair. His advice to the audience largely revolved around business strategies for building a professional salon team and navigating between in-salon work and creating and shooting collections. Joico International’s artistic director. “I try to go into the salon whenever I can for one or two days, because it keeps me fresh,” he said. It’s important for him to keep his collections fashion-forward but still, at the end of the day, to shoot for hair. See the rest of Carney’s thoughts on creating collections on salon52.ca.

For Mackinder, who has been in the industry for 30 years, egos and education were her biggest sticking points. “Sometimes I sweep up hair in the salon when I don’t have anything to do, and people look at me and wonder why,” she said. “But why not? It’s part of the job.” Check out more of Mackinder’s advice on staying educated and humble on salon52.ca.

Johnston

Carney Carney’s vast editorial expertise was the focal point of conversation when the mic was passed to

Mackinder

I

t was an early morning for the beauty pros who gathered at the Berkeley Church post-Contessa for Contessa Unplugged. Renowned Brit stylists Damien Carney and Vivienne Mackinder joined former Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, B.C.’s Edwin Johnston, onstage at the restored church to talk about their collections, their goals and their motivations.
