MOTIVATION LETTER

SALMAN KHAN 5
Salman Khan | Candidature Package for IFMSA LPH 2023-24

LETTER

Dear 1.5 million changemakers worldwide,

It’s me, Hi! You must be wondering, why am I penning down another motivation letter, this time around, for another position in IFMSA. I had the exact same thoughts before deciding to candidate to be your next Liaison Officer for Public Health Issues. So, why me? Why now?

I’d go back to November 2017, all the time, when a local activity in SCOPH on Mental Health changed my life forever. I was introduced to the world of public health advocacy, and activities. Ever since then, I was privileged enough to be actively involved in multiple local, national, and international activities through my NMO and IFMSA. This privilege made me realize that the world is full of health inequities. I realized I’m much more privileged than the 844 million individuals who lack access to drinking water, the 7.6 million lives that were lost in the COVID-19 pandemic due to reasons including vaccine hesitancy, lack of access to essential drugs and vaccines along with untimely service delivery, and millions (or even billions) who are affected by the climate crisis and the stigma surrounding mental health. These walls preventing health for all do seem impossible to tackle. However, my journey in IFMSA made me believe that these walls that they (inequities) put up to hold us back will fall down through our advocacy efforts.

MOTIVATION LETTER

I’ll be forever indebted to IFMSA for changing my perspective in every way and empowering me to become a fearless public health advocate. Each SCOPH initiative, irrespective of its numerical impact, helped me learn and unlearn the different complexities of public health issues and push myself out of my comfort zone. Every person I crossed paths withbe it activity coordinators, local public health officers, national leaders for SCOPH, and my beloved international teams, solidified my belief system. I developed numerous skills after working on multiple internal projects that helped me gain confidence to face the humongous world of external affairs.

The decision to run for this position isn’t a sporadic one. I spent midnights asking myself- Will I be able to represent the voice of medical students from 130+ NMOs? Will the voice be strong enough to bring down the walls created by health inequities around us? And most importantly, will I be able to empower every voice behind the success of our federation? After a lot of introspection, it was clear to me that the best way to give back to the federation that changed me as a person, is to utilize my internal expertise and occasional external experiences to connect the members with the public health world beyond IFMSA.

MOTIVATION LETTER

On several occasions, I was able to represent IFMSA in external events, be a voice for my NMO as the Vice-President for External Affairs, and contribute to policy-making nationally and internationally. It showed me the true strength and the potential we have to sustain momentum towards building a healthier and a fairer world. My current term as the SCOPH D made have the opinion that this potential will reach it’s peak if we align the internal and external efforts of the Standing Committees in IFMSA. Having followed the path of SCOPH on almost all internal levels, and being equipped with advocacy and external affairs skills, I believe I can do justice to unlocking this potential, together with you.

That being said, I invite you to go through my candidature and understand my plans to sustain the current efforts, have action-oriented outcomes, and address public health issues together. I hope to be a part of the impact created by SCOPHeroes and IFMSA enthusiasts once again.

They might be bigger, but we’re faster and never scared. So, let's Speak Now against these health inequities!

Lots of LoPH an Salman

PLAN OFACTION

SALMAN KHAN 9 Salman Khan | Candidature Package for IFMSA LPH 2023-24

BACKGROUND,VALUESANDPILLARS

My plan of action is based on the current work done so far in the Public Health External Affairs at IFMSA and the current documents that will shape the way forward (IFMSA Constitution and Bylaws, IFMSA Strategic Plan 2022-25, and SCOPH Strategic Plan 2022-25, all relevant IFMSA Regulations and IFMSA Code of Conduct). My plan of action focuses on the new ideas as well as the improvement of existing work done externally that align with the values of IFMSA and also includes the mandatory tasks that would fall under my mandate as the Liaison Officer for Public Health Issues.

If elected, I will transform the Plan of Action into a realistic Annual Working Plan, align it with the plans of the other relevant officials, and incorporate inputs from IFMSA members worldwide.

I aim to continue abiding by the following values:

Transparency: Transparency, especially in external affairs, is crucial for building trust, fostering accountability, and developing the capacity of the current and future public health advocates in our federation.

Accountability: As the LPH. I promise to be open to opinions, scrutiny, and feedback throughout my term, in order to improve my way of functioning and external representation of IFMSA in the global health arena

Inclusivity: My term as a SCOPH Director made me realize, every member deserves opportunities irrespective of their background, academics, and financial status, and to be involved in the decisionmaking processes. Hence, I plan to make my work inclusive and accessible to members.

Commitment: Being the LPH requires dedication, effort, and a strong commitment, owing to a very high workload and involvement with multiple externals in different focus areas of public health. I believe I am fully prepared to fulfill those requirements and give my 100% to the position.

My plan of action is divided into 3 Pillars:

Building Bridges for a Sustainable Future. Action and implementation. Further, Faster - Together: Stronger collaborations

10 PLAN OF ACTION Salman Khan | Candidature Package for IFMSA LPH 2023-24

BUILDINGBRIDGESFORASUSTAINABLEFUTURE

Under this pillar, I intend to work on the aspects which will directly affect the sustainability of the position and the position of the federation in the global health arena at large.

Handover and Sustainability of the position

As a member of the current Team of Officials, and a part of previous International/Regional/National Teams, I understand the importance of a comprehensive handover to ensure that the high turnover of the officials and team members doesn’t hamper the impact created previously. If elected, I will be in a period of giving and receiving handover simultaneously. For this to happen in a smooth way, I aim to do the following:

Discuss with the SCOPH D Elect and the outgoing LPH to work on a schedule that works best according to the availability of all three individuals and there are zero to minimum possible overlaps Ensuring that there is a smooth coordination of handovers between the SCOPH ITs 2022-23 and 2023-24 in coordination with the SCOPH D Elect

PLAN OF ACTION
SCOPHInternationalTeam2022-23: MonthlyITOLM(April2023)

PLANOFACTION

Making an internal checklist related to the handover of the LPH Position which will include the following topics: Relations with existing partners and the progress related to the plans with them (if any)

Recommendations on the way forward with the existing partners Struggles and challenges faced and recommendations on how to address them in the next term

Potential collaboration opportunities and external events to keep in mind

Ensuring that the LPH Elect 2024-25 receives a comprehensive handover

Sustaining the current efforts

A lot has been achieved in the arena of public health external affairs this term, and the foundations of the External Affairs Pillar of the SCOPH Strategic Plan have been laid. To keep up with the current momentum (and possibly upscale it), I intend to:

Reflect on the observations on SCOPH/Public Health External Affairs obtained through the baseline assessment form, NMO Report for MM23, and NMOs SWOT Analysis survey to sustain existing plans and develop new plans for:

EA capacity building for members

Plans with relevant external stakeholders

Reflect on the focus areas redistribution that happened amongst the VPE and LOs in the current term to identify which PH relevant Focus to be done a ted in pillar 3

PLAN OF ACTION

Environmental Sustainability:

In the previous March Meeting, our federation adopted a mandate on ensuring we take a step towards being more environmentally sustainable. In addition to the current progress, I would like to:

Follow up on the report of the mandate in collaboration with the NMOs and IFMSA TO 2023-24

Make use of the environmental declaration (if proposed and adopted) as an advocacy tool for collaboration with existing and new partners, and in external meetings related to climate change Explore the mechanism to monitor, evaluate, and report ecological footprint/impact in a low resource setting through consultation with relevant stakeholders and work on establishing a mechanism tailored for IFMSA

Discuss the possibility with the TO, EB, and OCs of IFMSA events, including but not limited to GAs/RMs to include a specific position in the organizing committees to ensure the event is organized in accordance with the IFMSA Manual on Recommendations on Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Meetings in IFMSA

PLAN OF ACTION

ACTIONANDIMPLEMENTATION

This pillar mainly focuses on two major roles of my work as an LPH: Advocacy efforts, and Policy-making and implementation

Advocacy Efforts:

IFMSA stands out as a highly regarded advocacy organization amongst the stakeholders pertaining to Global health. To ensure that the momentum set by my predecessors continues (and if further upscaled), I plan to work on the following actions:

Research as an advocacy tool: Evidence-based advocacy would strengthen our position in the public health arena. For this, I aim to work on commentaries (including one on post-pandemic recovery if the Global Priorities proposal for 2023-24 is adopted), white paper, following up on the current research work on Commercial Determinants of health, collaborating with partners for research initiatives (exploring the possibility jointly with the LSR), and involving NMOs in research projects.

Submission of abstracts in relevant conferences/symposia e.g. AMEE, WFPHA Congress, etc

Joint advocacy efforts with externals through research initiatives, constituency statements, side events, and social media campaigns

Social media as a powerful advocacy tool: Ensuring that IFMSA’s voice in public health issues is strengthened on social media through Twitter, Instagr RC and PRC IT bility of conduc th Day with U ith the outgoin ect)

PLANOFACTION

External meetings: To prioritize meaningful engagement of IFMSA in external meetings and also develop the capacity of IFMSA delegation and general members, I would plan to:

Assess the baseline knowledge and skills of the delegates and implement a capacity-building series ahead of the meeting

Continue the development of advocacy plans and share them with NMOs to get valuable input from members

Ensure IFMSA’s presence through side and parallel events, networking events, statements, strategic roundtables as well as consultations (if any)

Explore fundraising/sponsorship opportunities for IFMSA delegates, in collaborating with the VPF, relevant LOs, and externals

Stakeholder mapping for new potential externals and establishing communication with them (Specifically for events in person), Closely collaborating with the relevant NMO where the event is being held through: support letters for visa processes, and accommodation support (if possible), along with supporting the NMO in advocacy events based on the national contexts, and establishing communication with relevant national externals beneficial for the NMO.

PLAN OF ACTION

Policy-making and implementation:

Policies being a key asset to our external work enables us to carry out advocacy efforts. The following plans would ensure continuity and expand the scope of our policies:

Supporting NMOs in national policy-making (including but not limited to development, implementation, and evaluation)

Following up and reflecting on the policy process changes in the current term and contributing to inputs that would lead up to proposing recommendations or potential BCPs in the relevant GA, in collaboration with the VPE/LOs and EA IT Proposing (and re-proposing the public health-related policies which were adopted in MM21 and AM21), based on the upcoming external public health events in the next term (and the following term)

Inviting externals, IFMSA alumni, and the informal LPH advisory committee to give inputs and recommendations to the policy documents

Collaborating with the RDs in the regionalization of existing Public health policies and the development of new public health policies on a regional level

Continuing the discussion of using policy documents to align internal and external work with the SCOPH D and the relevant IT members

PLAN OF ACTION

FURTHER,FASTER-TOGETHER: STRONGERCOLLABORATIONS

The work of the LPH requires collaborations with a diverse group of people- including external partners and the IFMSA workforce. This pillar will be focusing on my involvement with the relevant people.

External Partners:

As a point of contact with multiple public health organizations working in diverse focus areas, it is important to ensure that IFMSA’s presence in the public health arena is not concentrated on only a set of partners belonging to a particular focus area. This would require constant engagement to a certain degree with externals from all focus areas. That being said, I plan to:

Follow up with the current work done in the standardization of communication strategy with external partners and work on modifications (if any) suggested by the outgoing LPH and NMOs

Ensure that the current MoUs are being followed up, through commitment reports, and following up on the plans set between the external partners

Exploring new public health externals to establish contact with and development of MoUs with promising externals

Ensuring IFMSA presence and active participation in conferences/summits (e.g. Global AMR Youth Summit, UNFCCC COY18) and competitions by external events (e.g. Innovate4Health)

Continuing the presence of IFMSA in the existing steering committees of organizations and working groups (WFPHA, Board member in GCHA, Children and Youth Pavillion steering committee for COP28) and exploring new ways to engage with them [e.g. presence of IFMSA in abstract competitions by WFPHA, engaging with GCHA in joint advocacy efforts)

Empowering NMOs and Members:

My main aim for this is to bring external affairs closer to members and empower the work of NMOs in the external affairs arena. The following will be the action points:

Engage in regular discussions to address the needs of NMOs, and strive to incorporate their needs into my work Facilitate and provide assistance (if needed) in order to enable inter-NMO collaborations in external affairs for NMOs that have similar public health interests and challenges

Work with the SCOPH International Team

Within the SCOPH IT, I hope to use my previous and current experience to support the IT in internal tasks and the SCOPH Strategic Plan, work with the SCOPH D to co-lead the alignment of internal and external efforts of the SCOPH IT, and build the capacity of IT members to ensure that the next generations of potential LPHs are ready and confident to take the lead in the IFMSA’s public health external affairs. For this, I aim to:

Actively take part in SCOPH IT OLMs and sustain the initiative of including EA updates in the OLMs agenda

Supporting the SCOPH Sessions Team for GAs by offering help in the facilitation of sessions and inviting externals to deliver sessions

In collaboration with the SCOPH (and other) Program Coordinators, I plan to empower the work done by NMOs and increase the external visibility of their activities.

With the outgoing and incoming LOs, SCOPH D Elect, and the LPH informal advisory committee, I intend to explore the possibility of including a SCOPH External Affairs Assistant in the SCOPH IT, and its feasibility.

PLAN OF ACTION

Work with the WHO and LWHO

LPH is the point of contact with multiple WHO departments and collaborates with the LWHO in multiple occasions. I have the following plans in mind:
