Choosing the perfect blend for your nursery

Partner with a trusted manufacturer:

Purchasing from a reputable manufacturer is crucial to ensuring your plants receive the nutrients and care they need. Manufacturers will often have different standards, and depending on your plants, some mixes won’t give you results. Be sure to purchase from reputable sources to ensure a safe, weed-free mix. Propagation mixes require precise standards and specialised mixing lines.

Choose a mix that provides proper aeration:

Selecting the right propagation mix is essential for promoting healthy root development and preventing issues such as root rot.

Our TopMix blends, and our Ellepot Prefilled Mixes offer the perfect balance of aeration, moisture retention, and drainage, helping your plants thrive. Proper aeration ensures that your plant’s roots have access to the oxygen they need for growth while also preventing soil compaction, which can hinder nutrient uptake.

Consider our range of TopMix and Ellepot Prefilled Mixes:

We offer various options for your nursery, including standard and high porosity blends and custom blends tailored to your specifications. Additionally, our mixes incorporate Nutri-Life Tricho-Shield, a biological inoculum of beneficial fungii, and Zeolite for enhanced cation exchange.

Embrace sustainable potting media trends:

Trends run the market. By choosing our TopMix Hortifibre solutions, you’ll be aligning your nursery with the growing trend of sustainable and eco-friendly potting media by removing perlite and reducing the peat component.

Our products support healthier root growth and contribute to a greener future for our planet. As more and more consumers prioritise sustainability in their purchasing decisions, adopting eco-friendly practices in your nursery will help you attract environmentally conscious customers and set your business apart from competitors.

Evaluate the pH, EC and physical properties:

When selecting a propagation mix, it’s essential to consider the pH and EC (electrical conductivity) ranges, as these factors can significantly impact plant growth.

Our TopMix and Ellepot Prefilled Mixes offer pH ranges of 4.0 to 6.0 and EC ranges of 0.5-1.5, providing an ideal environment for most plant species. Choosing a mix with appropriate pH and EC levels ensures that your plants receive the nutrients they need to thrive. Our TopMixes are tested for air filled porosity (AFP), waterholding capacity (WHC) and dry bulk density (DBD).

Our TopMix blends are conveniently delivered in returnable bulk bags holding two cubic metres, making them easy to handle and transport. We also offer expanded coir pith and chips in bulk bags. This streamlined delivery process saves you time and effort, allowing you to focus on what matters most – growing healthy, beautiful plants.

TopMix growing media to suit your specifi c crop

This is a new product range offered by Proptec, TopMix is a premium propagation and potting media manufactured using premium Baltic block peat, Select Coir, high grade perlite and zeolite in your specifi c ratios.

Accreditation & Quality Control

Proptec is fully accredited under the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA). NIASA is a national scheme governed, administered, managed and promoted by Greenlife Industry Australia (GIA). NIASA is the cornerstone of the Australian Plant Production Standard (APPS) and provides a set of guidelines that ensures a plant production business or growing media supplier operates according to industry best management practice and commits to a continuous improvement cycle.

Building onto NIASA under the APPS is EcoHort, the industry specifi c Environmental Management System (EMS), that provides businesses with a systematic approach to assess their environmental and natural resource management responsibilities as part of their daily business management.

We are also certifi ed for BioSecure HACCP which is a systematic approach for production nurseries, growing media manufacturers and greenlife markets to assess and manage their biosecurity risks and responsibilities. The program validates many of the Best Management Practice strategies employed under NIASA. As part of internal quality controls, all of our TopMix and Ellepot mixes are tested for pH and EC when fi rst batched and then retest 7 days later. We keep a 3L sample of all mixes to for 6 months which can be retested for pH, EC, Water Holding Capacity (WHC), Air Filled Porosity (AFP) and Dry Bulk Density (DBD).

TopMix Blends

Proptec has many blends as standard or you can have mixes custom made to your specifi cations.

TopMix is a premium propagation and potting media manufactured using premium Baltic block peat, Select RHP Coir, Woodfi bre, high grade perlite and zeolite in your specifi c ratios.

All blends have our granular Oasis Soax incorporated for long lasting re-wetting action and Nutri-tech benefi cial biologicals to inoculate against disease.

The bespoke blends are delivered in returnable bulk bags holding two cubic metres. Bags can be delivered on pallets for easy handling.

Baltic Peat

Baltic peat is widely known for its physical, biological, and chemical properties. The climate and geological conditions in these latitudes foster the development of the valuable properties of peat. Peat ensures high moisture absorbability, air circulation around the plant roots, and low heat conductivity, thus creating optimum conditions for cultivating plants and stimulating development of the root system. Baltic peat ensures the best possible environment for plant development and the formation of a root system. Peat also has a buffering effect on pH.

TopMix Coir - Select

Coco substrate has a variety of uses, depending on the way the coconut husk is processed. It can be divided into three forms: Coco pith is fi ne material combed off the coconut fi bres. Crush is the whole husk ground to form a combination of chip and pith. Apart from blends we also offer expanded coir pith and chip in bulk bags holding two cubic metres.

Woodpeat

Block that provides superior performance for plant growth.

A ready-to-use mix combining coir and defi brilated fi bres is available for growers and blenders. Providing operational effi ciencies and superior plant growth performance, compressed 5kg Woodpeat blocks offer 19 cubic metres of material per pallet.

In combining coir with Hortifi bre in one product called Woodpeat, growers and blenders will be able to eliminate the challenge of sourcing and blending the raw materials onsite.

“Growers will be able to easily reap the benefi ts of both raw materials in a convenient, all-in-one, highyield product”

Zeolite

Zeolite is used in most of our TopMix potting medias to aid in the CEC.

• High Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC).

• Very high affi nity for water increases rewettability of media.

• Lighter than sand.

• Safe natural product.

• Available in 500kg bulk bags

Perlite

Expanded perlite is a lightweight soil conditioner, loosens clay soil, reduces caking, and improves drainage and aeration. Perlite can be used as a substrate for hydroponics. Blend peat moss and perlite for custom soil less mixes. Can be used to start seeds, propagate cuttings, store bulbs and as a hydroponic substrate.

Discover the difference air can make

Better Rooting

• Channel air to the root zone to maximize growth

• Air root pruning to promote secondary and tertiary root development that prevent root girdling and J roots.

Easier Handling

• Keep the soil intact even in early development stages

• Minimize root system fragility so you don’t have to worry about damage from the substrate falling away when plants are removed

• Effi cient movement with Air Tray racks

Faster Planting

• Plants can be transplanted earlier and faster (no pot removal)

• The root system is held together better than traditional pots, so there is less root damage and stress at transplant, resulting faster establishment

The Air Tray® line of patented trays was designed specifically to prevent root spiraling. The Air Tray® design creates an air space around the Ellepot root zone to maximize the amount of contact the air can have with the roots.

Roots are then air-pruned resulting in lateral root formation throughout the root zone and preventing J root formation. This improves the structural integrity and stability in root systems and success after transplant. There is no other tray line like this on the market.

Air Trays® now offer a viable alternative for finished producers who look for a more sustainable alternative to the plastic pot. Through close collaborations with our valued industry partners, we have identified some key technologies that provide a complete production solutions when combined with the Air Tray®. We have grouped these together and define them as Air Tray® Technologies.

Ellepot & Air Trays for finishing and stepping up

Air Tray

Injection molded trays & containers

Proptek Air Tray System new to Australia, are even more popular as growers overseas realise the very significant time and cost savings they provide.

Growers are turning from ‘loose fill’ to the Ellepot/Proptek system rapidly to avoid spiraling labour costs. Ellepots when combined with a long-life and rigid injection molded Proptek tray allow for much more efficient automation of your nursery,

allowing you to make considerable labor and time savings. Ellepots are suitable for a vast array of uses from ornamental flowers, through to trees and shrubs to large scale forestry propagation. Stepping up can be automated to – a hole is simply drilled in a large Ellepot and a smaller Ellepot is simply slotted in. This bigger Ellepot then gets placed in a large celled tray and returned to the growing area.

The important factors for automation using Ellepots is to have a tray or container that holds the Ellepot firmly but not too tightly, supports the Ellepot down it full length, and provides some means of stopping media falling out of the bottom without creating an environment where circling roots can develop. Proptek containers meet these criteria where many other do not. Proptek trays and containers are injection molded and are designed to last for many years, rather than just a season or two. This makes them great value for money, and more environmentally considerate too. The purpose of our trays is to create as natural a root system as possible whilst reaping the benefits of a containerized system.

Growing benefits

• Better quality roots - better quality plants

• Labour efficient through automation

• Cost effective - less soil than loose fill

• Exceptional growing environment

• Easy to ship

Loose fill Trays

These are the original plug trays generally used for seeding application and propagating when not using Ellepots.

This type of tray was developed in the 70’s when plugs first came to prominence. Now with better understanding of root growth, the Air Trays are the gold standard.

Each cell size has its own unique advantages. Smaller cell sizes offer several benefits including helping to strengthen a weaker root system while maximising space in your greenhouse area. The larger cell size allows the plug to remain in the tray longer before transplanting, allowing the plant to retain both moisture level and nutrients longer.

Before choosing that final cell size, consider your production schedule, the species- rowing pattern, including root development and the available propagation space

Ellebag

Replace plastic bags with the Ellepot ELLEBAG system and see the benefits of propagating in a smaller volume container and not requiring to remove the paper prior to plant out.

Lower usage of substrate/media by using a smaller volume Ellepot ELLEBAG

Improved space utilisation in the Nursery - up to 25%

Logistics and Transport cost savings through lower product weight

Improved planting efficiencies - do not need to remove the paper prior to planting. Eliminate Transplant Shock. Faster in-field plant establishment.

TopMix Coir Disk

The Coir Disc is specially designed for the cultivation of Gerbera, providing maximum structure stability and an optimal air/water ratio.

Size: Coir Disc 145mm only.

The treated media guarantees against high Na and K values, avoids excessive conductivity while at the same time having Ca and Mg readily available through the fertiliser added to the substrate.

The disc concept is to utilise the maximum fibre content in the substrate to obtain the maximum structure stability and optimal air/water ratio. The handling volume is reduced making for easy handling of the material and lower transportation costs. By using the disc, no extra pot filling equipment is required and no bulky substrate needs to be handled.

Gerbera can be grown in 100% coir, or mixes of coir and perlite. The disc will, just like all coarse coir, contain about 50% water holding capacity and 45% air filled porosity.

As coir substrates can vary widely in quality due to the need of proper treatment of the media. This means that sodium (na), Potassium (K) and Chloride (Cl) levels are as low as possible. This avoids problems related to Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg) and other useful fertiliser components becoming unavailable to the plants.

Expanded Coir

Coir is available already expanded into bulk bags holding two cubic metres. Perfect for hydroponic growers growing in containers. Cut Flower Gerbera.

Topmix coir

Proptec’s premium quality coir is now called TopMix Select. TopMix Select coir is ready-to-use: no rinsing or treatment is required. Best for sweet peppers, soft fruit cultivated in high-tech growing systems, and other demanding crops.

Coir Blocks 5kg & 4.5 kg

Coco pith is fine material combed off the coconut fibres. Crush is the whole husk ground to form a combination of chip and pith.

Unbuffered Coir

Some coir products can be washed but unbuffered which can result in the release of Na and K from the coir at a later stage in your production. This has EC raising effect in your potting mix and can be problematic for salt sensitive crops.

Coi-CB-Ess-Chip_6

Coi-CB-Sel-Pith

After treatment that include ongoing washing and buffering, the raw material reaches RHP quality that is necessary for it to be considered for use in Holland. It is free of weed seed and is monitored throughout the entire process. EC is typically < 0.05mS/cm 1:1.5 dilution.

Coir handling Equipment

Coco MillCM100. The Logitec Plus Coco Mill CM100 is especially designed for the loosening of compressed coir blocks.

The CM100 moisturizes and breaks the blocks automatically. Because the breaking of the blocks is mainly done by adding water there is no loss of structure and the original volume (as it was before compression) is regained.

Coir is being used more often in modern horticulture due to the excellent breeding characteristics and good availability of the material. Coir is thought to be one of the most important growing medias of the future. By compressing the material into blocks, coir can be shipped economically worldwide.

Up to now coir processing has been a slow process or carried out using brute force which breaks up the compressed blocks. This can damage the fibres and does not incorporate the necessary moisture in the coir to decompress properly. Proper moisture is required before filling and planting.

The Logitec Plus CM-100 has been developed to moisturize and break up the compressed blocks in the proper way. The mill brings the coir back to its original state with the desired moisture level. The mill gently decompresses the coir using moisture control and a specialized screen.

The special screen only releases the coir that is properly processed. The process is done at a rate of about 12m3 per hour (around 16 cubic yards). The Logitec Plus Coco Mill CM100 is available in a manual and semi-automatic version. From the control unit the start, stop and run (only semi automatic) times of the individual components can be set.

BENEFITS

• Machine can be used indoors and outdoors.

• Material is loosened mainly by the moisture which helps maintain the structure of the coir material

• Maximum output volume. (no volume is lost during processing)

• Can be used for all types of coir blocks.

• No dust forming

• Low water usage

• The Coir processing line can be operated with one person

• Possibility to add additives to the coir and mix inline using Logitec’s soil mixing components

Peat Substrates

Baltic peat

Baltic peat is widely known for its physical, biological, and chemical properties. The climate and geological conditions in these latitudes foster the development of the valuable properties of peat. You can use the peat that we offer as a raw material for producing substrates, as well as to improve the soil in horticulture and agriculture.

Fine texture peat Use (0-7mm): The fine texture ensures a very high level of water retention. It is often used as soil to foster sprouting (frequently for automatic sowing lines). Suitable for the reproduction of seed vegetables, trees, decorative plants.

Medium fraction peat Use (7-20mm): This is the most popular type of peat, which is universal and intended for a broad range of plants and substrates. Standard-sized peat can be used for preparing a balanced soil mix, because peat can ensure an optimum water circulation level and drainage.

Coarse fraction peat Use (10-30mm): This peat is intended for perennial potted plants (trees and shrubs), because they

ensure high air capacity. Coarse fraction peat ensures air exchange and drainage of the same level as that which can be achieved with the presence of perlite and vermiculite. Peat substrates Pre formulated Greenterra substrates are produced in modern mixing facilities where the peat’s texture is maintained.

Substrate Peat

Pre formulated substrates - 250 litre bags Pre formulated Greenterra substrates are produced in modern mixing facilities where the peat’s texture is maintained. Besides the large selection of various peats (block peat, milled peat, structure and level of decomposition), Greenterra also offers many aggregates such as clay granulate, perlite, fertilisers, such as micronutrient fertiliser and patterned release fertiliser, and other materials. Order lead time may be 4-5 months for container orders.

material

Woodpeat® is considered a premix, because it can be added to any soil mix as a peat substitute. Woodpeat® is made of Hortifi bre®— a fi bre that we have been using for decades in our soil mixes-and coconut fi bre, providing an optimal balance of air and water.

Hortifi bre® allows the proportion of available air to be signifi cantly increased compared to a 100% coconut substrate, providing roots with ideal conditions for vigorous and even development.

In addition, the Hortifi bre® in the product is manufactured from woodchip recovered from the timber industry, thus limiting its impact on the environment. Woodpeat® may be used alone— in which case it is a 100% renewable substrate with agronomic qualities identical to that of peat-or as part of a mixture in order to reduce the quantity of peat required.

Woodpeat® can be dried and pressed-even more compactly than coconut fi bre-for easy and economic transport and a reduced carbon footprint.

A 380 G BRICK = 8 L OF SUBSTRATE AND A 5 KG BLOCK = 100 L OF SUBSTRATE!

Woodpeat 5kg Blocks

The excellent air capacity of Hortifibre® has made it a great product used for decades in substrates to improve air porosity.

Associated to the coco peat great water capacity, it results in Woodpeat®, a material with optimal air/water ratio. The percentage of air is significantly increased compared to a 100% coco substrate, giving roots the ideal conditions for early, vigorous and homogeneous development.

Thanks to its ideal air/water ratio, Woodpeat® is an excellent alternative to peat and can replace it in mixes. It contributes to wetlands preservation and complies with peat regulations on the horticulture market.

Furthermore, Hortifibre® is made out of wood chips sourced from wastes of the wood industry, limiting the environmental impact. It is 100% natural and renewable. Woodpeat® can be dried and pressed even more than coco for an easy and economic transport. A higher volume of substrate can be loaded per truck or per container reducing carbon footprint.
