Revitalization of Qingdao Liyuan Area

INTRODUCTION This project is located in the old city of Qingdao, where a unique building left by the Germans a hundred years ago is preserved, called the "li courtyard". Due to disrepair for a long time and lack of popularity, the excitement of the year has disappeared here. Therefore, the purpose of this design is to obtain a feasible method by changing the base to promote the development of the entire surrounding area and promote the use of it around. Daylighting, ventilation, poor, and high building density are the biggest problems here. This project will revive this area through partial demolition, partial preservation, and partial construction, giving it its own unique logo and charm to attract new residents and tourists

From this figure, it is obvious that the it can be argued that the Per-capita Sports Area in 1000 m radious around the base is only half of the national level in 2017, which means large area of sports ground should be planned in the base.

Even 1/3 more area of sports ground is planned, the Per-capita Sports Area is far behind that in China in 2017, not to mention the expected figure in 2020.More sports ground should be built in the neighborhood.

The area of planned sports ground in the base is nearly 1/3 that of total present fugure.

LIYUAN ANALYSIS

Liyuan is a characteristic regional traditional residential building form in Qingdao, which is formed during the German Occupation period (1920s-1930s) through the ingenious combination of western-style foreign buildings and siheyuan. It was once widely existed as the residential form of middle and lower level citizens in Qingdao.Its external contour is determined by the direction of the city street, which is usually square, surrounded by a courtyard in the center. The building is generally a two-to-three-story wooden structure, the ground floor is mostly used for commercial purposes, and the second floor is above for residential purposes.


Liyuan Typology The Dabaodao neighborhood (once Chinese Area)has the most abundant Liyuan and is most architecturally valuable neighborhood in Qingdao. There

CASE STUDY La Maison De Verre & Crystal House La Maison De Verre La Maison De Verre is a reconstruction project.Chareau kept the upper two floors intact and renovated the lower two, replacing the original stone structure with a steel structure.The previous heavy stone structure facingbthe courtyard were transformed into lightweight glass brick walls.(PAN Juan,2004)

Crystal House The novel glass masonry facade has been designed and engineered to replace the brick facade of a former townhouse in Amsterdam, aiming to preserve the city’s tr ad itio n al arc h ite c tu r al style and historical ensemble.The 10m by 12m façade,composed of solid and completely transparent glass bricks, is capable of carrying its own weight and withstanding wind loads without any additional substructure with a clear, high stiffness adhesive.
