SAM ALIG

LANDSCAPE DESIGNER PORTFOLIO

“Sam is a promising designer. Even in the first summer studio, his design was thoughtful in its responsiveness to the site and its context and attentive to detail in execution. I was always pleased to have Sam in my classes –he is engaged, curious, serious about his education but light-hearted in his manner. He seems particularly adept at working collaboratively, even in situations that are challenging.”

COMMON GROUNDS PARK

North Point - North Bend, OR

Winter 2020 Studio

DESIGN CONCEPT:

Pay homage to Hanis Coos Tribal Members in the Coos Bay Watershed and acknowledge a dark history of tribal/colonial relations, but strive to look positively towards the future. I wanted to transform what is currently an industrial waste site into a beautiful gateway as you enter North Bend, OR. Native plants were selected that were appropriate for wet/dry prairie, saltwater marsh and an adjacent amenity lawn. Plants with specific uses by local tribes were given priority with the intent that the gathering space could serve as a place to use while gathering materials.

CONSTRUCTED MARSH

This constructed saltwater marsh inlet was inspired by Amanda’s Trail, Oregon’s version of the trail of tears, As sea level rises over time, more water will flow towards the gathering space dedicated to the local tribes. Water flows in the opposite direction the tribes were marched in a metaphorical return home.

THE URBAN WOODLAND

Albina Neighborhood - Portland, OR Fall 2020 Studio

DESIGN CONCEPT:

Cr eate a balance between public and private spaces and design with consideration for the needs of black residents . This project strives to design spaces that feel welcoming and not intrusive while applying goals of the Green New Deal. Spatial justice is sought by depaving and removing large parking infrastructure, monuments of urban renewal era displacement of black residents. An urban woodland, lawn and terraces adjacent to a mixed use/mixed income building will be built in their place.

SEMI-PRIVATE MIXED USE PLAZA

The plaza and terraces are meant to be utilized by residents and patrons of the mixed-use building. It is intentionally offset and faces slightly away from the proposed Green Loop in Portland to create separation from the lively public bicycle transportation corridor. The goal is to mitigate the risk of proposed transportation infrastructure (Green Loop) bisecting the backyard of black residents of the Albina neighborhood. Albina residents were displaced from transportation infrastructure and have suffered from intense gentrification.

PLAZA TERRACING

Medium: AutoCAD to SketchUp to Photoshop

The terraces offer users freedom of how they want to use the space and give residents a place to unwind. For this rendering I drew linework in AutoCAD , exported the file to SketchUp to make a 3D model of the site which I then rendered in Photoshop.

The lawn is surrounded on most sides by an urban woodland, however it is open to users of the Green Loop. The lawn gives the sense of privacy for nearby residents, while still being accessible to the general public . Surrounding the lawn are paved paths with mulched paths leading into the woodland.

This rendering explores the edge conditions where the lawn meets the urban woodland. A paved trail lines the edge of the lawn separating the native understory and a medium density canopy cover.

DESIGN CONCEPT:

Provide the community with a much needed athletic field while also meeting the needs of the immediately adjacent neighborhoods to create family friendly spaces in an ecologically sensitive manor. Though a series of community engagement meetings, we were able to incorporate aspects of the community vision into the park, while also working with a tight budget. My role was to assist with engagement meetings, work on the technical drawing set and produce graphics that could be shared with the public.

Neighborhood residents expressed the need to have seating and areas for families to gather. Rassekh Park will have many picnic and seating areas throughout the park.

My role in these renderings was taking a sketchUp model, rendering it first with Endscape, exporting specific views of elements we wanted to highlight for the community and rendering them further in Photoshop.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN

NORTH BEND FAMILY HOUSING - AFFORDABLE HOUSING

NORTH BEND, OR

DESIGN CONCEPT:

Study circulation on site with consideration to how people move through spaces and can access vital resources. I want residents to be able to move easily and safely throughout the site while considering how to create visual buffers from headlights on site and from the surrounding urban environment. Vegetation will be used to help buffer, as well as create physical barriers for children and parents from vehicles in a way that feels natural and seamless.

S ketching early in the design process gives you the freedom to explore ideas in a loose, simple way. Using drafting software is an essential part of the design process, but jumping into CAD too soon forces precision too early and can obstruct the exploration of ideas.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

PLAMBECK GARDENS

TUALATIN, OR

DESIGN CONCEPT:

Create a balance between climate adaptable species, low maintenance needs and provide beautiful spaces for future residents of this affordable housing development. I wanted to go beyond code minimum while staying within the project’s budget, focusing on a primarily native plant palette with non-native species added for color variation, seasonal interest and greater resilience. Plambeck Gardens includes community garden plots, a botanical garden, multi-sport courts, and ample seating opportunities.
