Ridiculusmus, led by co-artistic directors, David Woods and Jon Haynes, is a flagship UK performance group touring nationally and internationally with work that achieves the oxymoronic aim of being both serious and funny. As part of the residency they share the creative process involved in works from a trilogy of socially engaged performance: Dialogue as the Embodiment of Love. 12

Music and Dance, Performance and Film Events Programme | February – June 2017

March 2017

The company has created over 25 original productions and is regularly commissioned by venues including the Barbican, National Theatre, Royal Court, Soho Theatre, BAC and Arts House, Melbourne. Awards include the Peter Brook Open Space Award; Total Theatre Significant Achievement Award and Award for Best British Production and Time Out Live Award. Since 2014, Ridiculusmus has been specialising in transforming the experience of complex mental health

issues into warm, witty and accessible performance. The pieces that comprise the trilogy have all benefitted from development work with staff and students in the School of Arts & Media and coalesce around expert investigation and public debate about the relationship between medication and dialogue, and challenges the medical model - specifically in the treatment of three medically-defined responses to trauma: psychosis

(‘The Eradication of Schizophrenia in Western Lapland’), PTSD (Give Me Your Love) and complicated grief (Grief). The first piece, ‘The Eradication of Schizophrenia in Western Lapland’, was presented as a scratch performance at the Robert Powell Theatre in 2014, before touring internationally.

The residency in Salford in March 2017 will involve practical research on the third production in the trilogy, GRIEF, with staff and students in Performance, in Nursing, Psychology and Social Work, and students of Theatre & Performance Practice, Comedy Writing & Performance and Media & Performance.

GIVE ME YOUR LOVE Friday 10th March and Saturday 11th March, 7.30pm

Limited places available: apply with course name, contact details and reason to r.talbot@salford.ac.uk

“It’s Ridiculusmus at their best” - The Stage GIVE ME YOUR LOVE explores post-traumatic stress and the therapeutic potential of controlled doses of MDMA. Welcome to the world of war veteran Zach. As the last man standing, Zach has retreated into a tiny dugout under a barrage of hostile fire. His enemies are cunning, using every trick in the book to mess with his mind. Even the landscape is weird: it’s a cardboard box, in Zach’s kitchen, in Port Talbot. His wife whispers, kindly, that it’s safe to come out. But is it a trap? For if the real enemy is Zach himself, then who will win if he loses? The show premiered at Arts House, Melbourne in November 2015, packed out a three-week run at Battersea Arts Centre in January 2016, and is at the Lowry Studio for two dates only. The production has gained prominent attention in the national press: an article for The Guardian, reviews on national radio, appearances on the BBC World Service and interviews in Nursing Times and Vice magazine.
