BIG BEAR FROM SAND TO SNOW Every winter, Southern Californians trade their sunglasses for ski goggles and hit the road for Big Bear. But if you only have one day to spare, is it really worth the journey? We decided to find out.

By Rachel-Jean Firchau

26 | LBHomeLiving.com

I

t was an early Saturday morning, or, evening, depending on how you’d like to think of a 3 AM wake-up call. While the rest of the city would see upwards of 60 or 70 degrees later that day despite it being winter (the perks of living in Southern California), we were digging through our closet, searching for long underwear, snow boots, and gloves that probably hadn’t seen the light of day in months. We had one free day to spare on this particular weekend, and we had our sights set not on the beach, but on Big Bear. We were on the road before most alarm clocks would ever dare go off on a weekend morning, having never been to Big Bear and not really sure entirely what to expect. While Big Bear is, by definition, a sleepy mountain town (population 5,200), this “little” town snowballs into hundreds of thousands of visitors each winter, when the powder is fresh and the ski rentals open their doors for the season. And, despite only being a quick 110 mile leg from Long Beach, the traffic conditions can be fierce, with swarms of anxious townies beelining for the mountains on any given Saturday morning, all dreaming of the same high-altitude escape. If you’ve checked your Google Maps by this point, the CA-38 begins to seem like a nice green alternative to the bright red, traffic-laden CA-330 N route on your screen, and it is. We glided on past the congestion and on towards Sugarloaf Mountain, where finally, the trees outside our windows began to outnumber the cars left on the road. So, why is this little town, nestled in the hills of the San Bernardino mountains, such a hot destination? The answer can be found propped up on 2 skis, or 1 board if that ’s how you roll. Like many, we were headed towards Snow Summit, one of two main destinations boasting 240 acres of skiable terrain aimed at quenching the thirst of hoards of snowhungr y Californians each year. Never having skied before, and only a brief 2-hour lesson later, we were far from qualifying for the 2022 Olympics, but that ’s all it took for us to understand the unmistakable flavor that lingers in your memor y once you’ve been here. Knees sore, hearts pumping from the equally thrilling and stomach-churning sensation of wanting to go faster without wanting to fall face-first, we turned our attention to food. The Village, Big Bear ’s central hub of shopping, food, and drink, is situated right up against the town’s eponymous lake, and proffers just about anything you could possibly want after a morning up on the mountain snow. We wandered around, ate a far too generous lunch (at Santana & Maverick’s, which I’d argue has the best view of the Lake of any restaurant in The Village, not to mention a rooftop area to make even the most Hollywood of visitors feel right at home), and took it all in before loading into our car to head back west.
