A Tradition of Excellence

Founded in 1920 by the Salesians of St. John Bosco - a Catholic religious order

of brothers and priests, Salesian High School is a private Catholic secondary school for young men built on the educational tradition of St. John Bosco who believed that education and faith are the keys to success and happiness. It is approved by the Department of Education and the Board of Regents of the State of New York and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Salesian High School serves approximately 500 young men from Westchester County and the borough of the Bronx in New York City and is conveniently located on a scenic 19-acre secluded campus overlooking the Long Island Sound in New Rochelle, NY. Continuing the renowned educational tradition of St. John Bosco, that emphasizes reason, religion, kindness and active presence as fundamental elements essential in the process of educating youth, Salesian High School is committed to fostering an environment that nurtures the whole person. Students enjoy the benefits of a quality academic program in a small school setting that prizes diversity and personalized attention. In a structured setting, each student is challenged to discover and develop his full potential. At its core, Salesian is a HOME that welcomes, a SCHOOL that prepares for life, a PARISH that evangelizes by shaping character through Christian values, and a PLAYGROUND where lasting friendships are formed.

Profile

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AT SALESIAN HIGH SCHOOL

MATH LEADERS PROGRAM Established in 2008, the Math Leaders Program is a full-scholarship program that provides emphasis on advanced math and science courses along with an introduction to the engineering sciences. Under the direction of a dedicated guidance counselor, students are exposed to a number of college tours, entrance into national competitions, and other supplementary academic programs. The expectation is that participants ultimately gain admission to the country’s most competitive colleges and universities. The recent graduates of the Math Leaders Program are attending Cornell University, Manhattan College, Rochester Institute of technology and Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, all on academic scholarships.

AUTOMATED LIBRARY From their workstations in the library/media center, the benefits of technology are only a click away. Students can search for books using the automated online card catalogue. Since the Salesian High School library extends to cyberspace students have access to a large collection of databases and ebooks through the library’s webpage. These resources are available to the students twenty four hours a day, both on campus and at home.

SCIENCE DISCOVERY Designed to provide students with hands-on and inquiry based experience, the Science Discovery Program provides participants with the opportunity to attend off-campus lectures, visit research sites and attend regularly scheduled researches classes and labs. Through contact with actual field conditions, this program provides a unique opportunity for students to stand apart from their peers and gain experiences now considered favorable when applying for admission to competitive colleges.

COLLEGE CREDIT In cooperation with Iona College, selected students can earn college credit through courses that are offered in Salesian’s “College Bridge” program and our on-campus “College Link” program.

ENGLAND EXCHANGE PROGRAM Each year ten seniors are selected to be part of the Exchange Program with a Salesian school in Farnborough, England. For ten days in October, our students host a partner who, in March, host our students. Interested students submit an essay at the end of junior year which are anonymously rated. One more thing...Salesian High School funds the whole program!

SATURDAY HISTORY PROGRAM An extension of the American History Academy Program, the Saturday Academy is a six-week, coeducational, tuition free, enrichment program held twice a year on Saturday mornings at Salesian. It is open to all Catholic, private, and public school students grades 7 through 9. Students that participate in this program funded by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History have the opportunity to examine selected topics in American History Studies. In addition to analyzing primary sources, videos, slides, and music, students participate in group discussions and use the school’s computers. Best of all - no homework and no tests! Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the Academy will send a Certificate of Achievement to the student’s school.

AGENDA BOOK & BLOCK SCHEDULE Upon entering Salesian High School, students are immediately introduced to our Agenda Book Program, which enhances organization and time management skills. We have a unique alternating block schedule, run on an eight day cycle, which means classes are 87 minutes, every other day. Similar to college schedules, students learn the importance of long and short term planning.

GILDER LEHRMAN INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN HISTORY ACADEMY Salesian High School is the fourth school in the country and the first outside of New York City selected by the Gilder Lehrman Foundation to be an American History Academy. The Foundation helps the school integrate American studies into the school curriculum. Through this grant, Salesian has created an academically rigorous learning environment that offers courses in American History throughout the fouryear high school curriculum. The Foundation oversees Salesian’s Academy of American History and provides support and educational materials. Teachers are invited to participate in seminars, enrichment programs, and fellowships taught by renowned historians at Ivy League colleges.

Guidance

The Guidance Department at Salesian High School consists of four highly-trained professional counselors, who are certified in the areas of personal and social counseling, academic advisement, high school integration, interpersonal skills, special programs, and strategies for success. To help freshmen acclimate to high school life, one counselor works exclusively with ninth graders and the other counselors advise individual students over the next three years (from grades 10-12) with exploring possible careers, post high school planning, and the college application process. A special counselor is available to provide support to students who may be at risk for alcohol or substance abuse issues.

Youth Ministry The Youth Ministry program at Salesian High School is designed to integrate what is learned in the religion classes into the everyday life of the students. As a “Salesian” school, we instill Gospel values in the Catholic Tradition with the spirit of St. John Bosco. This means that faith is a lived experience, carried out in the context of community. In this way we live the mission to be a Home, Parish, School and Playground, so that these ideals become a part of the students’ lives, and endure as lasting values that they carry with them throughout life.

Liturgy & Prayer

Students are active planning the music, being ushers, lectors, altar servers and Eucharistic ministers at school Masses. Mass is offered before school once a week for those who wish to attend. First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and opportunities for penance is offered every month. A school-wide Rosary in October, Stations of the cross, as well as Christmas and Lenten prayer services are also planned in collaboration between students, teachers and the Salesian religious staff.

Recreation

Through the Big Brother program senior students serve, while helping incoming freshmen enjoy a “Welcome to Salesian” cookout. Trips are organized to New York City at Christmas time. Spirit Week gives the students the chance to celebrate the feast of St. John Bosco with games and song. Intramural sports throughout the year and Olympic Day in the spring promotes unity among the boys as well as health competition.

Service & Community

Outreach

All students are required to do some form of community service in their four years. All freshmen and sophomores are required to participate in a class wide service project. Juniors and seniors must accumulate 50 hours of service at some outside agency in order to graduate. Students themselves have organized food, blood and clothing drives, as well as trips to youth centers and soup kitchens. Students may tutor or provide athletics coaching help for grammar schools among other ways to benefit the community.

Wider Salesian Family

As a part of the wider Salesian Family, active in over 120 countries around the world, students can participate in Leadership Retreats, service projects and trips sponsored by the Salesian’s Eastern Province. In 2012 students and faculty attended a mission trip to Managua, Nicaragua, working with poor families at a Salesian school.

Instilling Lasting Values!
