In May, the first graduating class of Salesian High School was welcomed back to campus. The memories were vivid for the alums who returned to walk the hallways and visit classrooms, and the spirit of the Class of 1964 was as vibrant as ever.

Of course, in the five decades since the first graduates received their diplomas there have been many changes at Salesian, including the admittance of girls, a new mascot, and Salesian High School is now officially Salesian College Preparatory.

Today students have iPads and leverage the Internet – concepts that were hardly imaginable 50 years ago.

Yet what has endured over time at Salesian is our commitment to academics, faith and family. These three words represent the essence of who we are and what we stand for; notably, they are also part of our new logo and branding.

And much like the Class of 1964, the Salesian Class of 2014 will go on to become doctors, lawyers, business leaders, teachers and parents of the next generation. The dream of Saint John Bosco was that they become faithful Christians and good citizens. As the class of ’64 made their footprint in life’s journey, now it is time for the next generation.

Congratulations to all alums and please remember the sacrifices made by many to ensure the education of our youth. Never has there been such an opportunity to give to those in need who are the leaders of tomorrow.

How did Salesian prepare you for college? “Salesian has prepared me both academically and socially for college. With numerous opportunities to take AP classes, I’ve had the college experience when it comes to academics. Also, extracurricular activities offered at Salesian helped me balance my schedule between both classes and volunteering.“

Pajuleras’ graduation address excerpt: “The great thing about Salesian is that there are so many students here with completely different and amazing talents. A quarter of our class are members of NCS championship teams in basketball, football, and softball, and another quarter are lifetime members of the National Honor Society.

A handful of students are in the school band, and others are artists who have collected many awards or poets who have used their powerful voices to shine in the

crowd or actors and actresses who have stolen the show in several drama productions.

While some have succeeded academically at Salesian, others have truly shown that they can manage their time wisely outside of school. Two students are Eagle Scouts, and many have part-time jobs. All of these accomplishments wouldn’t have happened without our drive to do our personal best; to persist, persevere, and perfect ourselves; to work as individuals and as a team.”

It was a beautiful day outside and a sunny mood inside at Richmond’s St. Cornelius Church on May 31st as Salesian College Preparatory graduated its 50th class in school history.

Exactly 100 seniors received diplomas and will enter college this fall. Class of 1964 valedictorian Jack Tolin was the commencement speaker and gave graduates an overview of the transformation of Salesian over the past half-century. A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friends of Salesian, This summer is a time for several Salesian milestones.

Congratulations to the Class of 2014, Salesian’s 50th graduating class, for all their accomplishments! May they bring the Salesian heart to wherever God sends them.

Congratulations also to the Class of 1964 who celebrated their golden anniversary with a beautiful reunion on campus. It was touching to witness their fondness and gratitude to their former teachers and mentors. Congratulations as well to Fr. Ted Montemayor, SDB, the newly appointed Provincial of the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Western United States. Fr. Ted pursued his teaching/practical training as a young Salesian brother at Salesian High School from 1976-1979.

And of course, this August we kick off the year-long celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco. Worldwide, the Salesian Family will celebrate and honor Don Bosco and his contributions to the education of young people. May we imitate his love and concern for the young. And may we all be blessed by God through the intercession of this great saint, “The Patron of Young People.”

FACES AND PLACES

After 25 dedicated years of service to Salesian, beloved faculty member Emily Eichman retired at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Over the course of Emily’s tenure at Salesian, she presided over the French Language program teaching French I, II, and III. She also moderated the French Club and worked consistently with students to raise funds for the annual trip to France. Emily also taught lower division English classes in addition to overseeing the school newspaper, The Sentinel.

“I will miss Emily’s unparalleled work ethic and nurturing approach to her students,” said Marylou Flannery, Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs.

“Room 206 was always bustling with students after school as Emily helped to edit an article for the newspaper, tutor a student in French grammar, or prepare for another Poetry Out Loud Contest. Emily’s lifelong ministry to the young at Salesian has been a testament to Don Bosco’s educational philosophy. Emily certainly came to epitomize in her classroom what Don Bosco taught in terms of always treating the young with reason, religion and kindness. It’s the end of an era at Salesian.”

Mr. Adrian Mison Fulay, Religious Studies Department chairperson and Scripture teacher, has been awarded the Tauber Holocaust Educator Fellowship for the 2014-2015 academic year. The fellowship will send him to Jerusalem, Israel, for an intensive, threeweek summer seminar during July at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Yashem, the official Holocaust memorial and museum of the State of Israel. He will join educators from around the globe in learning from pre-eminent scholars with expertise in Holocaust history, research, and pedagogy. The fellowship includes a $2,000 grant for Mr. Fulay to create Holocaust-related programs that will enhance Salesian College Preparatory’s curriculum. While in Jerusalem, he will also explore topics related to the study and teaching of Scripture.

Junior Bryon Muccular ‘16 was accepted into The Hidden Genius Project, an Oakland based non-profit that trains African-American male youths in entrepreneurial thinking and technology creation to solve the problems of tomorrow. THGP is led by graduates from MIT, Stanford and Harvard with ongoing support and mentorship from tech industry professionals.

It focuses on developing career paths in Software Engineering, User Experience Design and Technology Entrepreneurship, exposing young men to technology and technology careers.

In the program, Bryon has mastered advanced software development concepts, coding language including HTML and Python, and is creating a mobile app with his team members. In addition to the coursework, Bryon provides web design services to two local business owners. Students are placed in formal internships, as well.

Peace Corps volunteer Christopher BulkeyLogston ‘07 recently visited Salesian to speak to students about the importance of service and volunteering. He is currently teaching English and Physics to 9th and 10th graders in Guinea.

“While I was a student at Salesian High,” said Bulkey-Logston, “my many volunteer experiences had a significant impact on my future interests in serving others. I came to appreciate the value of working with others to accomplish goals beyond the scope of one’s own individual desires. And in offering one’s time and efforts to others, the benefits are much more profound and durable for the volunteer. Also, I learned that while short-term, tangible goals can be accomplished with a finite period of diligent effort, long-term, large scale goals require a consistent, enduring, determined effort. These lessons help me on a daily basis to carry out my service in the Peace Corps.”

TECHNOLOGY

eReaders Transform Learning

Salesian students don’t read books. At least, they don’t read books the way we used to. That is why the Salesian Library recently launched an eBook and audiobook collection through Overdrive. Nearly 80% of teens own a cell phone, half of which are smartphones. Overdrive allows Salesian to accommodate students on whatever device they choose, regardless of time or place.

Last year, Salesian introduced a 1-to-1 iPad program, which led to most students choosing eBooks for assigned novels, short stories and poetry.

The Overdrive collection contains every title assigned by the English department this coming year, starting with required summer reading.

Some of these titles appear as high-quality audiobooks, giving auditory learners a chance to experience great literature in a way that works best for them. But the Overdrive collection is not all about work. It is loaded with popular fiction titles like Veronica Roth’s Divergent and John Green’s The Fault in our Stars. These titles encourage leisure reading, which has countless cognitive benefits.

The quick switch to fiction eBooks corresponds with a similar shift away from printed non-fiction books towards eBooks, databases and other online resources. In a Pew study, a mere 12% of students said they were “very

likely” to use printed books other than textbooks when conducting research.

That is to say, students are conducting most, if not all, of their research through non-print resources. Recognizing this trend, the Salesian Library has spent the past couple years transitioning to a comprehensive, cohesive selection of eBooks and eResources. By providing access to cutting-edge technologies, the Salesian Library is helping raise competitive college-bound students and lifelong learners.

The generous grant will be used by Salesian College Preparatory to upgrade its computer infrastructure throughout the campus. New Dell and Cisco switches will help increase student engagement, expand curriculum opportunities, increase access to the Internet, and enable all students to interact in the digital age and acquire technology skills for college and the workplace.

Bay Area News Group Female Athlete of the Year: Mariya Moore, Salesian RICHMOND — A triple-double threat every time she stepped on the court, Mariya Moore did whatever was needed to ensure victory for the Salesian High girls basketball team.

At 6-foot and with a strong build and great court vision, she could play just about every position. Score, pass, rebound, defend – she could do it all at an elite level.

“I just wanted to get better and help the team in any way that I could,” Moore said of her senior season.

But most of all, she really, really didn’t want to lose. “I think she hates losing more than she likes winning,” said Kelly Sopak, who coached Moore last summer with the club team Cal Stars. “There aren’t too many (losses) in any column with Mariya.

She just won’t lose at anything.”

Salesian didn’t lose very often in Moore’s four years with the program, especially during her final season when the team played its most challenging schedule and went on a postseason run all the way to the Open Division state final.

In a distinguished class of East Bay athletes, including three McDonald’s All-American basketball players, Moore stood out. Moore not only is the Bay Area News Group’s East Bay Female Athlete of the Year, but she’s also in the conversation with such names as Jayne Appel (Carondelet) and the Paris twins (Piedmont) as the best girls basketball players to ever come out of the Bay Area. “She’s in that bucket with the great ones,” said Sopak, who couldn’t keep Moore and Salesian from handing his Miramonte squad its only two losses of the season.

Moore’s talent on the basketball court was appreciated on a national level, too.

Besides earning a scholarship to Louisville, which has become one of the top women’s basketball programs in the nation in recent years, Moore was the only California player named to the U.S. under-18 national team in May. Salesian coach Steve Pezzola spoke with a member of the Team USA selection committee after the trials and wasn’t surprised to hear that Moore’s intangibles separated her from others. “She made the team because she makes people better,” Pezzola said. “She does the things that others might not see or do.”

She could fill up a stat sheet, too. A four-year varsity starter, Moore averaged 17.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.5 steals as a senior. Her career numbers weren’t much different. But that’s not what she cared about. “Her uniqueness was blending her supreme talent with being selfless and wanting the team to win,” Pezzola said.

A soccer player first, Moore insists she wasn’t any good when she first started playing basketball in the fourth grade. “I was not a natural, it was work,” she said. “I wanted to quit, but I didn’t.“ Instead, her love of competition made her stick with basketball.

It’s also what’s made her a good teammate. “She was a superstar but didn’t need what some superstars need,” Pezzola said. “She just needed the team to do well and win. She bought in 100 percent.” ( A R T I C L E C O U R T E S Y O F T H E B AY A R E A N E W S G R O U P )

ATHLETICS The Salesian Lady Pride defeated the Miramonte Matadors 78-64 to win their third straight NorCal championship. The Lady Pride played in the State Championship for the third year in a row, this year competing in the highly-touted Open Division. The girls finished the season with an overall record of 30-7, and ranked #1 in the Bay Area by Cal-Hi Sports and #23 in the nation by Maxpreps.com.

Through the generous support of The Olympic Club, Salesian College Preparatory received a $12,000 grant which funded the purchase of new high jump pits, standards, covers and cross bars. This new equipment will not only serve the needs of the Salesian students and athletes, but will also serve more than 800 CYO athletes that use Salesian for their regular season track meets.

The Class of ‘64:

The young men of the Salesian Class of 1964 were a group like no other.

In 1960, these students enrolled as freshmen in a brand new high school. Although uncertain about what the future might hold, they embarked on a journey that would help blaze the way for generations to come. Throughout the next four years, the school quadrupled in size

T H E S A L E S I A N | S U M M E R ‘1 4

with the Class of 1964 steering the ship. While some classmates left and others transferred in, the class’ bond grew stronger as the years went on. During their tenure, the ‘64 boys founded new clubs and athletic teams, crafted school principles and traditions, and helped define what it means to be a Salesian student.

Blazing a Trail

50 Years

On June 4, 1964, the 85 members of the class received diplomas at St. Cornelius Church in Richmond at a graduation ceremony in front of faculty, family and friends. That moment marked the end of the students’ high school careers, but marked the beginning of a new chapter as each graduate was inducted into the timeless Salesian alumni family.

A lot of changes have occurred at the school in the past five decades. Today Salesian College Preparatory has more than 450 students, is coeducational, uses iPads in the classroom, has a new mascot as well as a host of sports teams. But what hasn’t changed is the spirit of the inaugural class and the legacy they left. And while each fall brings a new class of seniors and an incoming group of eager freshmen, there will only be one Class of 1964.

PIONEER PROFILES

Do you have a favorite Salesian memory?

Trying to keep up with the focus and intensity that Fr. Art Lenti brought to the Art Club. There were just a few of us out in the old Boys Club building. Leading by example, Fr. Art infused me with a high regard for perseverance. “A picture can always be saved—stay with it.” His persistent voice has encouraged me to do just that over the years.

What did you do after graduating Salesian?

I pursued my passion for design, attending Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles on a full tuition General Motors Scholarship graduating with Distinction in 1970, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design.

Why do you choose to financially support Salesian?

The values and focus on excellence is everywhere in evidence when one looks closely at the school today. I watched in awe as 19 of the 2014 Graduates (virtually 20% of the class) received both NHS and CFS Honors. This is a stunning accomplishment, and a compelling achievement, not just for the students. It’s an indicator of how Fr. Lenti’s mantra –“stay with it” continues to echo in the classrooms, producing these kinds of enviable results.

How did your experience at Salesian prepare you for life?

The Salesian experience served me well throughout my life and especially during a two submarine collision 350’ deep in Russian territorial waters. Fear would have been the expected emotion but Salesian math, chemistry, physics, football and religious training helped prepare me for just such an event. Stay focused, react and take control.

What was/is your current occupation?

Semi-retired Consultant, Construction Safety Engineer specializing in the food industry including Kellogg’s Cereal Company, ConAgra and PepsiCo. Warren Sepolen

Why do you choose to financially support Salesian?

It’s my way of saying thanks, and IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!

How did your experience at Salesian prepare you for life?

My experience taught me how to act and react as an underdog. As the first class, and along with several following classes, both academically and athletically we were unknown. Therefore, we fought our way toward developing a reputation for excellence both locally and collegiately, whereby future applicants from Salesian would be recognized positively in comparison with other high schools.

What was it like seeing your classmates at the recent 50-year reunion?

Seeing my classmates at our 50th reunion was on my “bucket list” and I was not disappointed. What a great group of guys! We shared many stories of the formative years of Salesian as well as the pride we have in the school and in being able to call ourselves Salesian graduates. The class of ’64 had and has a great esprit de corps. When we began as freshmen, people would say “What’s a Salesian?” Well, that is no longer a question! Fifty years of well-taught graduates have put the school on the map and in the consciousness of the community. Our class is proud to be the one at the genesis of this developed reputation.

Why do you choose to financially support Salesian?

I chose to donate to the school because it uniquely cares for its students in a personal individual manner, and develops boys and girls into young men and women. I was so impressed with the demeanor and accomplishments of the graduates at the graduation ceremony, and the student docents who showed us the campus, that I wanted to help in some way. It is certainly tough to finance a private school, and every little bit helps.

On behalf of Salesian College Preparatory, I would like to congratulate the Class of 1964 on your 50th reunion. As a second generation Salesian graduate myself, I truly appreciate the roles that each of you had in shaping our school culture and establishing our Alma Mater’s many lasting traditions. In the past 50 years, our school has advanced its mission of educating young people in Richmond and the surrounding communities, providing them with the tools for college and the moral guidance for life.

At a glimpse, the Salesian campus today may look much like it did in 1964.

However, many changes to our programs and institution have taken place over the years. Today, Salesian College Preparatory provides a co-ed education to 450 young men and women from the local area. We stand behind our reputation of having 99 percent of our graduates enroll in college each year.

With Don Bosco’s teachings at our core, we continue to serve the youth in need by offering scholarships and tuition grants to more than 60 percent of our student body. Without assistance, many of our hard-working families would not be able to afford the cost of a Salesian education.

Our academic and extracurricular programs have continued to grow as well.

Today, Salesian boasts a 1-to-1 iPad Program, in which all of our students use Apple iPads to take notes, complete assignments and submit tests. Students use their iPads to access Internet anywhere on our 21-acre campus. The technology enhances classroom lectures and improves student engagement. Additionally, we now offer a rigorous visual and performing arts program for our creative, musical and theatrical students.

The great achievements of the past 50 years simply would not have been possible without the ongoing financial support of our donors. Salesian College Preparatory’s

23rd Annual Golf Tournament

“Isn’t it fun to go out on the course and lie in the sun?”

It was fun in the sun at the Richmond Country Club on May 5th as 116 players vied for supremacy at the 23rd annual Salesian College Preparatory Golf Tournament.

The course was in prime condition for the Salesian foursomes, who not only competed for low scores and bragging rights but also raised much-needed funds for the Salesian Scholarships and Tuition Grants Program.

Local businesses joined volunteers, participants and friends in giving their time, talent and treasure to make this event a great success. The tournament raised more than $18,000 for student support – money that will have a direct impact on students’ lives. Each year Salesian College Preparatory distributes more than $1.5 million in scholarship and tuition assistance.

The Alumni Fund Scholarship To honor the 50th anniversary of our first graduating class, Salesian has introduced a new Alumni Fund Scholarship to support deserving students that need financial help to continue their Salesian education. For some Salesian students, performing well academically just isn’t enough.

Despite achieving high grades and fulfilling commitments to community service, some of our students’ families have been hit hard by the economic downturn and are having a difficult time affording a Salesian education.

We are asking for the help of our Salesian Alumni to give these students an opportunity to complete their education and join our proud Salesian Alumni family.

Athletic Hall of Fame Honor Class of 2014 Inductees Three special athletes were recently inducted into the Salesian College Preparatory Athletic Hall of Fame. Each has made a lasting contribution to the Salesian athletic program, and has exemplified the virtues of integrity, leadership and excellence that help define the Salesian reputation. Their accomplishments will live on for generations to come. Congratulations!

Madison Burfict ‘92 was a three-sport athlete competing in football, basketball and baseball. A standout football player on both offense and defense, Burfict added a unique and often unstoppable elusive dynamic to the 1990 and 1991 Salesian teams. As a junior, Burfict helped lead Salesian to a 6-3 finish, running for 10 touchdowns and throwing for nine touchdowns.

Memorable performances include a game vs. Menlo when he had five total touchdowns (4 running and 1 passing). In 1991, Burfict led Salesian to a 9-3 finish and its first BCL Championship and the first Salesian football championship since 1983.

Jocelyn Leche ‘02 was a two-sport Salesian athlete who competed in soccer and softball. In soccer, Leche was a constant threat around the goal and a four-year varsity soccer standout.

In her junior year, Leche scored 28 goals, had 18 assists and led Salesian to a 16-4 overall record and the team’s first North Coast Section bid. That year she was a First Team BSAL all-league selection as well as the league’s MVP. In her senior year, she scored 15 goals and had 14 assists, leading the team to a 14-4 finish. She was again named First Team all-league and the league MVP; she subsequently attended USC on a soccer scholarship.

Jahvid Best ‘07 competed in both football and track and field. In football, Jahvid garnered national recognition as one of the top high school players – rushing for 3,325 yards and scoring an astounding 48 touchdowns as a senior.

In three varsity seasons, Best ran for 6,479 yards and scored 91 touchdowns (both of which remain North Coast Section and Bay Area records), while leading Salesian to its first football championship. As a senior, Best was selected to the Parade All-American first-team and was named the USA Today California Football Player of the Year. Jahvid received a football scholarship to the University of California Golden Bears and subsequently was a first-round draft choice by the Detroit Lions of the National Football League.
