Principal Interview with 2025 Dux, Anton Occhiuto

On behalf of our community, I congratulate our 2025 Dux, Anton Occhiuto, who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.4, putting him in the top 0.06% of all Year 12 students in Australia. Anton achieved a study score of 49 in Psychology, 48 in Environmental Science, 48 in General Mathematics (2024), 44 in Literature, 43 in Visual Communication Design, and 43 in Food Studies. Anton intends to study his first preference of Bachelor of Design at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Architecture and Environmental Architecture.

I spoke with Anton about how he maintained his focus and motivation to achieve at such a high level, and I had the privilege of hearing about his aspirations for the future. It’s truly inspiring to see young men like Anton stepping out into the world and contributing to our wider community.

What motivated you to work hard in Year 12?

I was really motivated by the people around me; my teachers and my friends. I genuinely liked all my teachers, and their commitment to helping us learn made a huge difference. And honestly, a bit of friendly competition with my friends pushed me too. I’m friends with quite a few of the high achievers, so trying to keep up with them was definitely part of it.

Beyond that, I think I just have a natural drive to do well. I wanted to see how far I could go. The supportive atmosphere at school made me feel like I really could achieve something great, and that motivated me to give it everything.

In what ways did your teachers support you throughout Year 12?

My teachers were incredibly knowledgeable and committed. They were always happy to spend one-on-one time with us, whether in class, in the library, or over email. They provided very clear feedback leading up to SACs and exams, which really helped me understand what to focus on. Their communication and willingness to help outside of class made a huge difference.

What lessons have your relationships at Salesian taught you?

Because many of my classes were small, we built really close, supportive groups. We shared resources, helped each other through challenges, and developed ideas together. Teaching concepts to friends also helped consolidate my own learning. The sense of community between teachers and students was one of the most valuable parts of Year 12.

What piece of advice would you give to current students?

Choose subjects you actually enjoy. I had a bit of an unusual mix, but it worked because I was passionate about them. When you enjoy a subject, the work doesn’t feel as heavy. Also, balance is essential; quality of study is more important than the number of hours. Do things you enjoy outside school, and don’t burn yourself out.

What has been the most rewarding part of your Year 12 journey?

Definitely the relationships. Having many of the same teachers and classmates for two years built strong connections. The small classes meant more individual attention, more chances to contribute, and a really supportive learning environment. Getting to know everyone so well and growing together made the whole experience so rewarding.

Now that the results are in, what are your next steps?

I’m hoping to study a Bachelor of Design at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Architecture and Environmental Architecture. I’m really excited for the next chapter.

Interview with 2025 VCE VM Leader of the Year, Anthony Riccardi

We are delighted to congratulate Anthony Riccardi, receipient of the Blessed Michael Rua Vocational Major Student of the Year Award. This recognition reflects his consistent dedication to the Vocational Major (VM) program and the genuine effort he brings to everything he does. A respectful, thoughtful and positive role model for his peers, Anthony has balanced his College studies with his external commitments of work and TAFE with maturity and purpose.

Reflecting on his journey at Salesian College Chadstone, Anthony shared how the VM program, his teachers and the opportunities offered through school and TAFE shaped his growth as a student and as a young person finding his pathway.

What got you interested in pursuing a career in plumbing?

In Year 11 I was studying mechanics, but I realised it didn’t feel like the right fit. I wanted to be doing something more hands-on that I genuinely enjoyed. When I switched into the Cert II Plumbing course at TAFE in Year 12, everything clicked. I loved the practical side straight away, and doing work experience on Thursdays confirmed it for me. Being around people who were also making similar changes gave me confidence to take the leap. Once I started the plumbing course, I knew I wanted to follow that pathway after school.

What kinds of facilities and tools were helpful to you in your studies?

The support from my teachers, especially Miss Zwalf, made the biggest difference. She kept us on track, pushed us to do our best, and really cared about how we were progressing. The VM team as a whole created an environment where we felt supported and motivated. The excursions and certificate opportunities were also incredibly helpful. Completing certificates including my White Card and Food Safety training gave me real skills I could put on my resume and helped me feel prepared for job interviews. Those experiences, combined with the structure of the VM program, played a huge role in getting me ready for work.

What helped to balance your studies at Salesian?

Starting the Applied Learning Program in Year 10 meant I quickly learned to manage my time between school, work, and TAFE. Because we were only on campus three days a week, I realised early on how important it was to make the most of the time I had at school. My teachers helped a lot. They reminded us to stay present, enjoy the experience, and keep things in perspective. Having supportive classmates also made a big difference, especially in Year 12. We looked out for each other and made sure everyone stayed on track. That sense of balance came from both structure and support.

What lessons have your relationships at Salesian taught you?

My relationships with both teachers and classmates taught me the value of connection and taking opportunities while you have them. I was lucky to have Mr Rogers teach me from Year 10, and his support, along with that of the whole VM team, helped me grow personally and academically. My friendships also changed over time. I did not start VM with a big group of mates, but by the end of Year 12, the boys in VM had become some of my closest mates. Being together in that space brought us closer, and it reminded me how important it is to support each other and enjoy the moments you have.

What advice would you give current students pursuing similar careers?

If you are unsure about your future direction, VM is a great opportunity to explore different pathways. You do not need to have everything decided straight away, and the program allows you to gain experience while keeping your options open. While some students wait until Year 12 to make a change, starting earlier in Year 10 or 11 can help you understand what suits you best. My advice is to stay open minded, be willing to try new things, and take opportunities as they come. You may discover a pathway that fits you far better than you expected.
