WE BELIEVE THAT NORTHERN RUGBY MATTERS. AND WE KNOW IT MATTERS JUST AS MUCH TO YOU TOO.

Whether you’re getting your knees muddy on a cold Sunday morning, or watching Sale Sharks Women mix it with the very best at the Corpaq Stadium, we know you’re just as passionate as we are about growing the game we love and making sure that everyone has a chance to play.

We want you to use that passion for the greater good of rugby, both across the entire region and at all levels of the game, and join us in helping to create a financial and sustainable Sale Sharks women’s team, independent of owner funding. Sale Sharks is launching a crowdfunding campaign, designed to support the growth of the women’s team and the wider game in the north, giving supporters, local businesses and the wider community

a chance to be involved with the only northern team competing at the elite level of domestic women’s rugby.

This is your game, and your team. And this is your chance to get involved.

BECAUSE NORTHERN RUGBY MATTERS.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN...

The club was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for the women’s team in the aftermath of the original decision not to award a place in the Premier 15s, and we are now calling on our supporters to harness that passion for the greater good of rugby, both across the entire region and at all levels of the game.

We’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign, designed to support the growth of the women’s team and the wider game in the north, giving supporters, local businesses and the wider community a chance to be involved with the only northern team competing at the elite level of domestic women’s rugby.

To provide a legacy for the campaign beyond its end date, the names of those who donate will feature on a permanent fans’ wall of fame at Sharks’ Carrington Training Centre, where both the men’s and women’s team are based.

A WORD FROM THE AXE

A HUGE WELCOME BACK FROM ME FOR OUR FIRST TASTE OF GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP ACTION AT THE AJ BELL IN WHAT SEEMS LIKE AGES. IT’S OUR FIRST HOME GAME SINCE WE BEAT BATH IN JANUARY AND AFTER A COUPLE OF CHALLENGING WEEKS ON THE ROAD, IT FEELS GOOD TO BE BACK.

And what a game we’ve got for you today as we welcome the league leaders, and a team I know very well, in Saracens. Both sides are missing some key players today but whenever you get first against second you know it’s going to be an intense, high quality game and that’s what I’m expecting today.

I’d also like to offer a big northern welcome to Mark McCall and his staff and players. Since leaving Saracens to come back home a couple of years ago I’ve stayed in touch with a lot of people from the club and I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.

But that can wait until after the game because for the next 80-odd minutes we’re all focused on getting a win.

The Saracens that we face today are a very different team to the one I left in 2020 in some respects. Their methodology has changed in terms of how they go about their game,

but the underlying principles of togetherness, work ethic, defence and celebrating every little success haven’t changed. They’re a constant and we need to get at the very least parity in those areas to have a chance of beating them.

They’ve scored more tries this season in transition, or from attacking from depth and there’s probably a perception that they’ve scored far more than us. But they haven’t. In fact they’ve only scored two more than us this season which says plenty about how we’ve attacked this season.

But we do have to be sharper in areas like transition, our kick chase and turnovers, otherwise they’ll have us. Those areas have been a big focus for us this week because we can’t give them space to attack from.

Saracens are led by a man who I hold in very high esteem. I’ve taken so

much from Mark McCall, but the main thing would be his honesty and his ability to plan for every eventuality. As a young defence coach he’d probe and question me about what could happen in a game and that was so important. I’ve taken that on and tried to take that into my role here. This week in particular, I’ve tried to step back and let others lead in their ways but with a consistent message.

We go into this game off the back off two very frustrating defeats against Northampton and Exeter. Of course we’ll never know but we feel like we could and probably should have won both games if we’d have kept 15 men on the field. Even with 14 against Saints I felt like we were in control, but then with 13 it’s so tough.

We’ve managed to treble our yellow card count for the season in the last couple of games and lost a lot of

the good discipline that we were really proud of. They say that how you do anything is how you do everything and so this week we’ve looked at whether we could be more disciplined on and off the field in everything we’re doing. One thing is for sure; we need to be at our best, with 15 men on the field, to get the win today.

We’re expecting another busy one today and I know you’ll play your part in driving the lads on and creating another fantastic atmosphere. It’s been a big club effort to fill the stadium this season and I do really feel like it’s made a big difference to the lads.

So let’s make it as loud as possible.

Enjoy the game, Al

LAUREN DELANYFULL-BACK

CO-CAPTAIN’S CALL UP

Sale Sharks Women’s co-captain Lauren Delany started her week with the news that she has been recalled to the Ireland squad and she ended it by going toe-to-toe with Premier15s giants Saracens at the StoneX Stadium.

Lauren is one of Sharks’ most experienced players but a rugby CV that includes five years at Waterloo before joining Sale in 2020, alongside playing for Ireland, is just part of a remarkable sporting CV.

As a youngster she represented Ireland in basketball, but now the fullback-cum-winger is fully focused on her rugby and will look to add to her 16 Ireland caps when the Six Nations begin later this month.

She said: “I am over the moon to get back in the squad. It has been a pretty turbulent year for me, through injury and de-selection from the Ireland squad, but I feel like I am in great place at the moment.

“I’ve been playing loads of rugby, which is great going into the Six Nations, and I’ve been testing myself against internationals every week.

“I can’t wait to get into camp and get

I AM OVER THE MOON TO GET BACK IN THE SQUAD. ...I CAN’T WAIT TO GET INTO CAMP AND GET INVOLVED AND HOPEFULLY PUT THAT GREEN JERSEY BACK ON.

involved and hopefully put that green jersey back on.”

For now, Lauren’s attention is on Sale Sharks and looking back to last Sunday’s narrow 31-21 loss to Harlequins, Delany was full of positives and pride for her team’s effort.

15 w #NORTHERNRUGBYMATTERS

She said: “We played a very decent first-half, and to go in at half-time 14-10 up against Quins we were very happy. We played well in the secondhalf and had plenty of opportunities but we just weren’t able to convert.

“In hindsight, in those games we want to be taking a losing bonus point because we had chances to win but just weren’t clinical enough.”

Earlier in the season when Rachel Taylor’s women visited The Stoop, Harlequins ran out 40-3 winners. The fact that Sharks ran the 2021 champions so close and had chances to steal a win at the CorpAcq is testimony to the huge strides forward that the group has taken this season.

Lauren said: “You can see from our performances, particularly at home, that we are really able to compete

WE ARE CREATING MORE CHANCES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO SCORE. NOW TO TAKE THAT NEXT STEP WE NEED TO BE MORE CLINICAL AND STARTCONVERTING THOSE CHANCES...

with those top four teams now but you can see from our lack of bonus points throughout the season that we just don’t score enough tries.

“The great part about this second half of the season is that we are creating more chances and opportunities to score. Now to take that next step we need to be more clinical and start converting those chances and we might get a scalp over one of those big teams.”

“The CorpAcq Stadium feels like a fortress for us now. Teams hate coming here, maybe because they know they are getting a dogfight or maybe they hate coming to the North.

“There is incredible belief around this team, we go into every game thinking we can win, and we never see ourselves as underdogs. If you go into any game believing you are the underdogs, in my opinion, you’ve already lost.”

Lauren shares her leadership responsibilities with fellow cocaptain Georgie Perris-Redding. And it’s an experiment which Lauren says is paying dividends for the team.

She added: “It has been a great experience as co-captain with Georgie. I have been around elite sport for 20 years and it is my first experience as a captain, or co-captain.

“We balance each other out really well. I think the challenge for us is not on the pitch, we both lead from our performances on the pitch. What we need to work on is off the field, keeping all of the different characters and personalities happy and supporting and managing people through their high and lows.”

TOM ROEBUCK
WINGER

RAMPANT ROEBUCK

After an ankle injury in December derailed a try-scoring start to the season, Tom Roebuck has wasted no time in re-igniting the form that saw him feature in Eddie Jones’ England squad last Autumn. The man from Chester RUFC scored a try on his first two starts back from the injury, against Bath and Bristol, and added another last Sunday against Exeter.

The stunning score came after just 14 minutes when a flying Roebuck glided in from 50 metres out, leaving two prone Chiefs defenders in his wake and with a finger barely laid on him. The 6’2 flyer was at full speed as he hurtled past defenders, knees pumping and tongue waving in typical Roebuck fashion.

“I was apprehensive when the ball was in the air,” he said. “I thought I was going to get smashed. Then I looked up and saw some space and I thought let’s just go for it and it just opened up.”

Sharks fans have seen plenty of trademark Roebuck try-scoring celebrations in the winger’s 49 games for the club to date. And as he gets set to play his 50th game

IT’S GOING TO BE BETWEEN ME, REEDY AND FLATS BUT CARPS HAS MADE A LATE RUN AT [TOPTRY SCORER]
RECENTLY...LAST YEAR I HAD TO BUY REEDY A NANDO’S WHEN HE WON IT, SO I WANT A RETURN OFF HIM THIS YEAR.

for the club, the 22-year-old says he’s got his eyes firmly on ending the season as Sale’s top try scorer.

He said: “I think it’s going to be between me, Reedy and Flats but Carps has made a late run at it recently.

“There is competition there because last year I had to buy Reedy a Nando’s when he won it, so I want a return off him this year.”

Despite losing out by just two points at Sandy Park, Roebuck says the squad had taken plenty of positives from the loss. And he knows it’s crucial to take what they’ve learned into today’s game against table-topping Saracens.

He said: “At the start of the Exeter game, when we had 15 men, we felt pretty comfortable and we didn’t think it could slip away from us, like it might have in previous years.

“But when we went down to 13, that was probably the turning point and when they got a strong hold of the game.

“We knew we would have to come out and win the second-half, which we did and we were happy with our effort and intensity, we were just unfortunate in the end with how the game went.

“It would be easy to dip our heads after two losses and feel sorry for ourselves, but the way we have reviewed the game and spoken as a

team, we know we are a matter of inches and not miles from where we want to be as a team, and we know what we need to do to get there.

“Today’s game feels like a mustwin for us in terms of where we are in the table. We want to keep the distance between us and third and narrow the gap between us and the top.

“We aren’t thinking about whether we will see them again this season, that is something for the future and right now it is a case of they are top and we’re second and we need a win.”

Hitting 50 Sharks caps at the age of just 22 is testament to the impact Tom has had on this team and on the Gallagher Premiership. A huge factor in that has been the bond he has with his fellow academy graduates, branded by ITV recently as ‘the rugby Class of 92’.

He added: “It’s class. I live with Carps, I have known Gus, Doherty, Reedy since I first came here over six years ago, then there is Bev, Raffi, Ashman, Harper that have all come through together with us.

“It is massive for us; it has bonded us and it only makes us better on the pitch together. It is one thing playing well and winning but doing it with your best mates is really special.”

FROM THE SHARK TANK

OUR WEEKLY GUEST SPOT FROM THE PODCASTING SUPERFANS OVER AT THE SHARK

It’s back to the AJ Bell for the first time in what feels like forever for the biggest of games in a top of the table clash. There’s plenty of stories to go with this fixture, not just league position but also Axe’s history with Sarries, some feisty affairs in the past and home semi-finals up for grabs for both teams.

Since our last home game against Bath in January (!), it’s been something of a difficult run to say the least. No fan could hand on heart say they really care too much about the Premiership Rugby Cup unless they’re winning it, but two chastening losses on the road to Bristol and Exeter to knock us out of the competition were still tough to swallow, even if the small mercy of the poor and late television scheduling meant it was as difficult to find as it was painful to watch. There were at least some excellent run outs for the future Sharks, not least Tristan Woodman who off the back of that and man of the match in the U20 6 Nations looks as though he’ll be a superstar before too long.

Back into the Premiership and a tester away at Northampton was first up, dominated by the story of a Manu red card

early on. Sale responded superbly, continuing to put pressure on Saints and wrap up the bonus point before half time. Those of us who’ve been following Sale for long enough were typically nervous at this scenario and it was well founded, with two further (debatable) yellow cards giving Saints the impetus to launch and complete a comeback that anyone but a Sale fan would have found surprising and impressive. A couple of

TANK, THE NORTHERN POWERHOUSE OF RUGBY PODCASTING, WITH A DETAILED, IRREVERENT AND OCCASSIONALLY CYNICAL LOOK AT ALL THINGS SALE SHARKS.

absolutely blatant forward passes sealed the win, and Sale were left to rue poor discipline and being on the wrong side of the referee.

Luckily we learned our lesson and the story against Exeter the next week was… absolutely no different. In a game that Sale could have won, yellow cards and ill discipline again contrived to take the game away from us. It was actually another good performance, and while there’s clearly some time needed to bed in a new 9/10 combo with Fordy’s return, there’s cause for optimism. The good news is we’ve built ourselves a healthy enough buffer for the pressure to be slightly alleviated in the run in. The bad news is the buffer is being eroded weekly at the moment, which makes it all the more crucial today at home against the strongest team in the league.

Sale v Sarries is always a corker of a game and with the North West denied any professional rugby union for the month of February, this should be a belting atmosphere for a game to match. We can expect test match level intensity and physicality and a nerve shredding game, but with a point to prove, a home semi-final to cement and us in the crowd behind them, we’re predicting a hard fought and inspiring Sale win. It’s a massive one, so enjoy it. Come on you Sharks!

Enjoy the game, Alex, James and Lewis

INTRODUCING OUR BRAND NEW MONTHLY PODCAST, HOSTED BY BBC AND SKY SPORTS

PRESENTER MARK CHAPMAN

SWIMMING WITH SHARKS

We have launched a new podcast, hosted by BBC and Sky Sports presenter Mark Chapman, focused on celebrating the very best of northern sport.

The monthly ‘Swimming with Sharks’ podcast will feature guests from Sale Sharks and some of the region’s biggest sporting clubs, such as Manchester City, Everton and Manchester Storm.

Each episode will focus on a different topic ranging from leadership and building a winning culture, to how clubs use data and sport science, how clubs grow commercially, how to build the profile of women’s sport and much more.

The series kicks off with a look at leadership within Sale Sharks as Mark is joined by Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson and England and Sale flanker Tom Curry.

Tom, who has led Sale in the Premiership this season and captained England in last year’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland, explains how his approach to leadership at international differed from at club level.

And Alex takes Mark through his own thoughts on what makes a good leader, how his dad marked him out as a leader from an early age, and how he helps develop leadership skills within the Sharks dressing room.

Sharks Sales and Marketing Director Claire Butters said: “We want to take our supporters inside Carrington and show off the personalities that make up the fabric of the north and the culture and brand that we’ve been working so hard to build.

“But this podcast is so much more than that. Rugby, and Sale Sharks, needs to grow its audience and attract new fans and that’s what we want to do. We’re much more than just a rugby club.

Episode one is available now from Apple Podcasts, Spotify and all other major podcast platforms.

BEN THE SHARK

NEW SHARKS IN THE WATERS

The site has renamed seven of its sharks at the aquarium in honour of the England stars – with the sharks named after each Sale players surname, apart from brothers Tom Curry and Ben Curry, for obvious reasons!

As such, guests at SEA LIFE will now be able to visit Tom, Ben, Hill (Jonny), Ford (George), Rodd (Bevan) Tuilagi (Manu) and Quirke (Raffi) at the attraction.

To celebrate their naming ceremony and for added enrichment, SEA LIFE has put the sea creatures’ namesakes to the test and added a Sale Sharks rugby ball into the habitat, so the sharks could practice their rugby skills and enhance their mental development too. Sharks are known for being fast, strong and brave, so the marine creatures would make excellent signings for Sale if they keep up their training!

Jenn McDonough, General Manager at SEA LIFE Manchester, said: “Here at SEA LIFE, we are immensely proud to support our local sports stars as they represent our country

on the national stage. “We are delighted to be renaming our sharks in honour of England’s Sale Sharks players and we’re thrilled the team at Sale Sharks were more than happy to get involved – hopefully we’ll be able to invite some of the players down to meet their underwater selves soon!

Claire Butters, Sales & Marketing Director for Sale Sharks said, “We were really excited to hear SEA LIFE Manchester were looking to name some of their creatures after our players. Everyone in the squad works hard every day and we’re extremely proud to have a number of internationals within the team. .

WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY

TO CELEBRATE WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY 2023, YOUR SHARKS WILL BE RUNNING OUT IN ODD SOCKS THIS WEEKEND, AS PART OF THE ‘LOTS OF SOCKS’ CAMPAIGN.

The campaign exists to raise awareness of Down Syndrome, with the WDSD event taking place every year to increase public awareness about the genetic condition. People with Down’s Syndrome have an extra copy of the sock-shaped 21st chromosome and, as such, those looking to support the campaign are encouraged to wear odd socks.

Speaking about Sale Sharks’ involvement, Brand and Community Manager and Women’s Player, Vicky Irwin said: “This is our third year of wearing odd socks in recognition for World Down Syndrome Day; we fundamentally believe this small gesture is hugely appreciated by the DS community and elevates their profile.

“Our ethos as a club is being much more than rugby, and we have the world’s first down syndrome Rugby Team and year on year this has grown, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to play Rugby and we are leading the way on this. The Sharks Crusaders Fin Club are part of our club DNA, and we will continue to raise awareness and support the community through internal club activities.“

Our DS sessions are held at our Carrington HQ every other Sunday, with the next taking place on Sunday 12th March.

Sale Sharks Disability and Inclusion Coach, Meg Kirby added: “Our sessions are action packed and there’s even a chance for the parents to get involved. The feeling you get during and after the sessions are unmatched. It’s great to see everyone’s smiles beaming ear to ear.

“There is never a dull moment with this lot, and it’s one of the highlights of my role within the club. I can’t wait to see this session continue to grow and see how far this club can take it.

“This past season, we have seen a huge rise in the uptake in our sessions and even flew to Venice for the first-ever international inclusive tag rugby tournament. The boys loved it; the weekend was full of rugby, food and laughter. They all brought back memories they will never forget.

“I am so proud to see that rugby has brought these individuals

together and it just shows the value of the sport we love. The Crusaders now are much more than teammates, they are the closest group of friends and a vital group within our Sharks Family. I am just lucky to witness their relationship and rugby skills blossom.

“I would like to say thank you to all the parents and careers who come along; you play a such an important part, and I am forever grateful for your support. A special shout out to Adam Dolby (Freddy’s Dad) for his continued dedication to the club and being a valuable member of our Sharks Family.”

Julie Duff, Chair at Cheshire Down Syndrome, who is the parent of long-term Crusader, Josh said: “Firstly, thank you for helping us raise awareness of Down Syndrome; by continuing to have the conversation about what the condition is, we are breaking down myths and misconceptions every year. Having Sale Sharks’ support in this is invaluable!

“He absolutely loves the sessions. The coaches at Sale make the training accessible for him so he gets the same opportunity as his brother, to play rugby with his mates. What a team they are too –the joy that they get from playing, and the camaraderie they have both on and off the pitch, is a privilege to watch! Thank you, Sharks.”

So, Sharks Family… this weekend, grab some odd socks and wear them proudly as we all celebrate World Down Syndrome Day together.
