With a busy Premiership schedule, Alex has handed the reins to Senior Academy Coach, Gareth Harris for tonight’s Premiership Cup clash with Leicester Tigers. We caught up with him to get his thoughts ahead of the first group game of the 2022/23 competition...

Firstly, it’s a great opportunity for me to take the reins with a brilliant group of lads tonight, and I’d like to start by welcoming Steve Borthwick and his Leicester Tigers to the AJ Bell Stadium for what I’m sure will be a really exciting game.
Enjoy the game! Gareth
It’s been a different sort of training week for the squad tonight with a Tuesday night fixture landing so close to the away game against Bath on Saturday. There was an element of helping the senior squad prepare for the trip down to the Rec at the weekend, whilst also having a focus on the task, here at home, tonight.

WELCOME BACK TO THE AJ BELL STADIUM FOR OUR PREMIERSHIP RUGBY CUP FIXTURE AGAINST LEICESTER TIGERS.
It’s an exciting opening round for us in the cup, and a great opportunity for us to start on the front foot.
I’m excited to see a lot of the younger lads play tonight. A few of them have had opportunities already in preseason, either with ourselves or away
on loan, so they’re ready for these two rounds of the Premiership Rugby Cup. I won’t pinpoint individuals as they’re all here by their own merits, but I am really looking forward to seeing them get out there as a squad and put their hands up to show what they’re about.
We narrowly missed out against Leicester last year in the Premiership Rugby Cup. We were a little disappointed with how we started away at Welford Road, but then followed up with a good performance at home against Newcastle. The big focus for these lads tonight is to come out firing on home soil, starting fast and ultimately setting our stall out early in this competition.
We’re fortunate to have a big Senior Academy group with a few lads coming in from last year’s U18s, so we’re not short on players which is great as there’s a healthy competition for places which naturally lifts everyone’s performances. Our Premiership bye week follows this game too, which means we’ve got some of the senior squad members who missed out at the weekend in the squad tonight. That adds to that competition and gives them a bit more game time so that they’re ready when they’re called upon.

Welcome back to the AJ Bell for a return to the curiosities of the COVID era when midweek games became commonplace, albeit this time with the welcome return of Thecrowds.Prem Rugby Cup midweek matches lend a new angle to the competition and it’s one we’re excited to experience at home for the first time, having only played one of these away last season against Quins (and that went pretty well too, with a youthful team winning 34-29 at the Stoop).
doubt we will see some exciting rugby There’splayed.somuch talent in this academy that it’s hard to cover it all, but some ones to watch who we could see pushing for first team inclusion this season and beyond are worth noting. Upfront the likes of James Harper, Cal Ford and Alex Groves are all hugely exciting talents, with the younger generation of Ethan Caine, Huw Davies and Yande Nkonge behind them.

In the backs there’s a wealth of exciting talents including Nye Thomas, Kieran Wilkinson, Joe Carpenter and Elliot Gourlay who all have a chance to make an impact after turning out at National 1 level for the likes of Sale FC and Caldy.

It’s been a mixed bag in this competition the last couple of years – the highs of course of 2021 when we won being a great memory for many Sale fans after so many trophyless years, offset with last season’s exit after some poor results and a points deduction. On that basis we expect nothing less than another win in the competition this year and that starts tonight with a great opportunity at home against what we expect will be a similarly young and exciting Leicester Tigers side.

Nye had been a stand-out player as he rose through the age groups at Liverpool College and his local rugby club, Sefton RUFC.
Academy scrum-half Nye Thomas shot to prominence in the early stages of the 2021/22 season when he made his Sharks debut just six months after completing his studies at Liverpool College.

Nye appeared as a second half replacement in the Gallagher Premiership fixture against Northampton Saints at the AJ Bell Stadium, and in doing so, became the youngest Sale Sharks scrum-half in the league’s history.

Michelle Orange, Trustee and club owner, said: “Now more than ever, it is essential we give children the tools to maintain their physical and mental wellbeing.
The ground-breaking project, launched between the charity and Sale Sharks’ principal partner last year, educates primary school children on mental health and wellbeing through hybrid classroom and outdoor sessions.
Sharks players past and present including Manu Tuilagi, Tom Curry, and Jason Robinson have helped deliver ‘Are You AO-K?’ to more than 1500 children in 25 schools across Greater Manchester.
“This is a really special project for us. To be able to reach the lives of so many people, promoting awareness of an issue that is highly pertinent in our modern world, is any charity’s dream.”

AFTER REACHING OVER 1500 CHILDREN ACROSS THE NORTH WEST, ‘ARE YOU AO-K’ MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMME WAS RECOGNISED AT THE CHARITY TIMES AWARDS.
The life-changing impact of the programme was rewarded with the national honour, presented at a ceremony at The Marriot hotel in CreatedLondon.by

everything they had learnt playing against Sharks’ biggest stars.

“The inclusion of the class at the Festival event was such a brilliant occasion that the children are still talking about it and parents keep asking when the next one was.
