DIMES’ POST-MATCH INTERVIEW AFTER THE WIN OVER SARACENS

We are being well and truly spoilt at the moment, there is so much rugby to watch and with the Gallagher Premiership now reaching its climax, it is only going to get more exciting over the next few weeks. Especially as a Sharks supporter, as we look to secure ourselves a play-off spot for the first time since 2006.

I would like to welcome Stuart Hooper and his Bath squad to the AJ Bell for this afternoon’s match.

Since the return of rugby, Bath have showed impeccable form and have staked their claim as title contenders with a number of impressive performances, both at home and on the road.

Today’s match will prove a real test for us and our ambition. Exeter have set the standard this year and we are now in a four-horse race for three play-off spots. Alongside ourselves, Bath, Wasps and Bristol are all in the mix and are all playing exceptional rugby. It is important that we take the opportunity in front of us this weekend as our destiny is now in our own hands.

I have aptly named our rotated team the ‘Dirty Dozen’ and it was fantastic to see the lads perform well on Wednesday evening against Saracens. As the season now spreads out with just three Gallagher Premiership fixtures to play over the next four weeks, I’m hoping the strain on the lads will

begin to feel slightly better as their rest periods are increased over the next month.

Alongside our three remaining league fixtures, we also have the prospect of winning some silverware in just over a week.

Harlequins visit the AJ Bell on Monday 21st September for the eagerly anticipated rescheduled Premiership Rugby Cup final.

Everyone at the club is thrilled at the prospect of winning our first trophy in over a decade and after a slightly uninspiring performance at the Stoop in Round 14, I think the lads will have a bit of an axe to grind so personally, that’s one match I’m really looking forward to.

Our focus today is on the visit from Bath though, which will be as big a test as always, I just hope for your sake that the scoreline doesn’t reflect our last two meetings!

A Blue, Black and White side featuring a number of debuts dominated Worcester Warriors in the midweek fixture, sealing a 40-15 victory.

With 81 points on the scoreboard for Bath across the last two matches, Hooper said: “It breeds momentum and excitement among the lads.

There’s confidence that the tries will come if we apply the pressure.”

The previous Saturday, in front of around 3,000 Harlequins fans (and the odd Blue, Black and White who had found their way into the Stoop!), Bath put in a relentless display to secure a vital 27-41 win. The performance restored confidence for the south-west outfit after a

disappointing loss 23-27 to Wasps. It has been the only loss since restart and came off the back of back-to-back away wins against Northampton Saints and Leicester Tigers.

RUARIDH MCCONNOCHIE The flying wing has been on superb form since rugby restart, scoring in four consecutive matches. His first try against Harlequins was another display of being a class poacher, while the second showcased all his physical attributes – pace on the wing, stepping inside the cover tackle and a power hand off. He is making a strong case for inclusion in Eddie Jones’ Autumn squad.

His qualities on the counterattack, beating the first defender and try scoring are evident, with five tries on the board since rugby restart. Behind-the-scenes, McConnochie’s work ethic and contribution to the squad mark him as someone who will become a great for Bath and beyond.
