Good evening and welcome to our first matchday programme of the 2020/21 Season as we start our Gallagher Premiership campaign against Northampton Saints.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Chris Boyd and his Northampton squad who have the pleasure of making the trip up north to the AJ Bell Stadium in the first round of this year’s competition!

We hope that we as a club can continue to progress and develop in all areas during these challenging times, and collectively we feel we are better placed than ever to achieve our goals this season.

It seems like an age to most of us, but in fact it has only been seven weeks since we were last in Premiership action against Saints at Franklin’s Gardens. That match in Round 21 of the 19/20 competition turned out to be the last for both Northampton and ourselves, after unfortunate circumstances lead to a COVID-19 outbreak here at Sale.

It is also disappointing that we are still unable to welcome our loyal supporters back into the AJ Bell Stadium, but we continue to work with PRL, RFU and DCMS in the hope of allowing the Sharks Family back to watch us live before the end of the season! We certainly don’t want to lift another trophy without you!

We were bitterly disappointed that we were unable to finish the season the way we would have liked to but internally we have galvanised the feeling of disappointment into one of motivation ahead of tonight’s match, and the forthcoming season.

Thanks again for taking the time to download our digital matchday programme, your support is invaluable to the club during these testing times.

Sid Sutton is the man charged with boosting Sale’s commercial and on-field drive for success, having just been appointed as their new chief executive in support of rugby director Steve Diamond. He tells Neale Harvey how he intends going about the job.

What a time to become CEO of a Premiership club… are you mad?

It’s an interesting time, for sure, but I’ve been on the board here for the last two years – an opportunity which was presented to me through working with co-owner Simon Orange for the last seven years.

Simon and I have a great working relationship and the challenges within a professional rugby club are similar to those of any other business.

It’s a very ambitious club, supported by highly ambitious owners and the two most important jobs I have are to ensure the finances are in place to secure the future of the club and the staff are able to return to some sort of normality as quickly as possible.

Sale recently clinched their first silverware since 2006 in the shape of the Premiership Cup. Small beer to some maybe, but how significant a moment for you?

How pleased were you with the strides Sale Sharks were making pre-Covid?

I don’t think anyone can underestimate the progress the club has made since Simon and Ged Mason took over four years ago. The budget is there, Steve Diamond has formed a fantastic squad and it’s been a really exciting time for the club. You sit on a board and you understand what’s going on in a financial and commercial sense, but it is on the pitch where everything really counts and the team has done really well with a number of higher and higher league finishes. It’s been a good progression over the last few years but no one is sitting on any laurels, we want to continue that now.

It was a fantastic boost for everyone – a real high for the club and a special moment that you have to take on board. Unfortunately, that feeling got very dramatically removed because of the unfortunate Covid outbreak which denied us a shot at reaching the play-offs and maybe winning the title, but that shouldn’t be allowed to detract from what was a significant achievement. The club has dusted itself down now after the most disappointing end to last season and it was a difficult time, but we were also acutely aware the pandemic has caused far greater devastation than anything we experienced. The club is full of quality throughout and I believe we will come back stronger for this.

Sale Sharks have revealed rugby union’s first ever interactive kit after agreeing a major 3 year partnership deal with Isle Of Man based technology disruptors LUNA Venture Partners.

As part of that deal LUNA Venture Partners will use the groundbreaking cyber coding technology VCode® which has been invented by Manchester based cyber technology company VST Enterprises.

The club’s men’s team will wear a VCode® ‘maize’ style logo positioned between the VCode® name branding on the front of their shirts for the 2020/21 season, with fans able to use their smartphones to access exclusive content using the innovative kit design.

VCode® is the ultra secure code scanning technology invented by VST Enterprises.

Unlike traditional bar codes and QR codes which can easily be cloned and targeted by hackers, VCode® uses a secure closed loop system with end to end encryption and over 2.2 Quintillion combination codes.

The VCode® can be scanned in a 170 degree arc, whilst on moving objects and up to 100 metres away in some conditions. The technology also has wider applications and uses across rugby and many other sports for content delivery, player and fan health passports, secure access and anti counterfeiting of tickets.

Joining them as a club partner is Huddle Capital, which will also feature on Sharks’ ground-breaking kit as a sleeve sponsor. A Leeds-based peer-to-peer finance lender, Huddle supports UK-based SMEs with business loans to aid growth.

Lewis Ludlam has been named Northampton Saints’ co-captain for the 2020/21 season by Director of Rugby Chris Boyd, and will lead the squad alongside Alex Waller this term.

The 24-year-old flanker has enjoyed a whirlwind two years since the Kiwi coach arrived at Franklin’s Gardens, initially bursting into the spotlight during the 2018/19 campaign to become a first-team regular for the first time in his fledgling career.

This will be Waller’s third campaign as co-captain, first leading the squad alongside Dylan Hartley and then Teimana Harrison last season – who has taken a step back from captaincy duties, but remains a key member of the leadership group at Franklin’s Gardens.

And Boyd believes that in Waller and Ludlam, he has a duo that can help keep Saints’ playing group together and continuing to progress.
