NEW shift Built to move the scene forward.–WELCOME TO THE DISTRICT"

A new chapter opens in St Julian’s — where historic architecture meets modern rhythm, and design-led spaces exist alongside standout culinary concepts. It’s layered, fast-moving, and quietly redefining what it means to be ahead of the curve.

The Twist was created in response to that energy. To capture what’s happening now — and offer a glimpse of what’s next. We’re here for the established names and emerging voices, the details that catch the eye, and the moments that shift the mood. We dig into the craft, the culture, and the thinking behind it all — without losing step with the pace of Mercury.

This is a place imagined differently — where the heritage of Mercury House intersects with the bold lines of Zaha Hadid’s architecture. A meeting point between vision and history. A cultural space built for experience, expression, and connection.

In our launch issue, we shot our first fashion editorial on site — bold silhouettes and refined styling,

set against stunning backdrop of Luciano, at Mercury. We tap into the vibrant entertainment scene, from immersive performances to rooftop moments and a nightlife pulse that runs deep. In Beyond the Blueprint, we speak to interior designer Sean Arrigo about shaping retail spaces that balance brand identity with local texture.

From chef-led dining to after-dark hideaways. From fashion experimentation to hospitality with a point of view. We’re here to explore it all — with curiosity, with taste, and with a little bit of edge.

At its core, The Twist is about perspective — where design, culture, and creativity meet. We spotlight what resonates and what’s shaping Mercury now, from bold ideas to the people driving them forward.

Because nothing here is by accident. And The Twist is your lens into the district.

See you at the Mercury.

TREND EDIT

Nikita Hunter explores the rise of micro-trends and the pressure to keep up, offering a thoughtful guide to building a wardrobe grounded in personal style rather than passing fads. In a world of fast fashion and ever-changing algorithms, style can start to feel like something we’re constantly chasing. But what if it wasn’t about keeping up — and more about tuning in? This piece invites you to pause, reflect, and approach your wardrobe with clarity, intention, and a better understanding of what truly suits you.

These days, it’s common to see people across all forms of media telling you what to wear and how to wear it. But how often does anyone explain how to take that advice and actually apply it to your own style? It’s easy to make suggestions without acknowledging that everyone has different lives, tastes, body types, and routines. All of that should be considered when deciding what to buy — especially if you want to make smarter, more intentional wardrobe choices.

Micro-trends are everywhere: short-lived styles that fade quickly and often leave behind a sense of regret. You’re left with clothes you no longer want to wear and a dent in your bank balance. Beyond the financial waste, there’s something deeper at stake, micro-trends can distract you from finding your real style. Social media and online shopping have made fashion more accessible than ever, presenting you with an endless and often overwhelming range of options. The chal-

lenge? Learning how to cut through the noise and choose what’s truly right for you, not just what’s trending. So, where do you start?

Consider your lifestyle.

Think about what your day-to-day looks like. Are you active and often outdoors? Do you attend events, dinners, or parties regularly? Are you desk-bound for most of the day? These kinds of questions are key to figuring out what clothes genuinely work for your life. Ask yourself whether practicality matters more than aesthetics. Do you often switch environments and need to layer up? Just because you want something doesn’t mean you need it, so be honest. A good starting point is identifying your everyday essentials, the pieces you always reach for, and building from there.

Consider your body type.

If you’re one of the lucky few who looks great in everything, that’s a bonus but most of us have a more selective relationship with what suits us. We’ve all felt the frustration of loving something on the hanger only to realise it doesn’t flatter us in the mirror. That’s okay. Silhouettes make all the difference. Your body is unique, and not everything will work, but that’s part of the process. There’s a huge range of styles and shapes out there, and with a little effort, you can find the ones that work best for you. Pay attention to what you love, and what you don’t, and let that guide your future choices.

Consider longevity.

Be realistic about how often you’ll wear something. Is it a one-time piece or a staple? Will the

quality hold up over time, or will you be mending or tossing it in a few months? Ask yourself: Will I wear this often enough, and for long enough for it to be worth it? If the answer is no, leave it behind.

Thoughtful purchasing helps uncover your true style. Over time, patterns will appear, in the colours, cuts, textures, and brands you gravitate towards. Notice them. Build on them. For some, that might mean a clean, minimalist wardrobe tailored to their shape. For others, it might be bold, expressive pieces tied together by a consistent palette or aesthetic. Style is personal. It’s how you show yourself to the world, so make it intentional.

INTERVIEW

A DISTRICT BY DESIGN.

In the heart of St Julian’s, something unexpected rises. Mercury isn’t just a lifestyle district — it’s a new way of thinking about urban space. Designed by the late Zaha Hadid in one of her final architectural signatures, the district brings together sharp design, curated experiences, and a layered rhythm that moves effortlessly between luxury retail, next-level dining, family energy, and cultural pulse. It’s a place that doesn’t just host experiences — it creates them, through bold architecture and a strong sense of identity. Whether you’re here for the rooftop views, the street-level atmosphere, or a moment of quiet in the chaos, Mercury offers something rare: a place that feels alive, intentional, and entirely of its time.

How would you describe the overall vision of Mercury in St Julian’s?

Mercury is more than just a retail destination — it’s a curated lifestyle hub that blends high-end shopping, diverse dining experiences, entertainment, and wellness. Designed by the late Zaha Hadid, Mercury was her final signed architectural project. At the heart of Mercury district lies a dynamic multi-tiered Piazza. This open space hosts events, namely art installations, and family-friendly attractions including a seasonal skate park, sports events, concert artisanal markets, children’s activities, live entertainment, and more. Anchoring the district is the ME Hotel by Meliá, a luxury design hotel that brings bold architecture, cultural energy, and elevated hospitality, a quiet escape above the bustle of St Julian’s.

What sets Mercury apart from other destinations in Malta?

Mercury is Malta’s first all-in-one lifestyle district, featuring over 150 retail brands, restaurants, bars, entertainment zones, beauty and wellness hubs, and a 5 star hotel. It’s designed as the “beating heart” of St Julian’s a vibrant space where visitors can seamlessly move from shopping to dining, live shows to pampering and leisure. With its strong focus on quality, design, and inclusivity, Mercury welcomes all ages and backgrounds.

How do you ensure Mercury appeals to locals, tourists, and families?

We’ve designed Mercury to be safe, engaging, and welcoming for everyone — even well into the evening. Planet Play, Malta’s largest and most diverse indoor entertainment centre, keeps both children and adults entertained, while the Museum of Illusions offers educational fun, and optical illusions that captivates all generations. For locals and tourists alike, Odyssey Malta , is an immersive storytelling experience, blending projection mapping technology, storytelling, and Maltese

heritage, the Odyssey invites you to walk through Malta’s past, and take a flight through Malta’s history in a domed cinema room, upon the wings of the messenger Mercury. With ample rest areas, baby-changing facilities, and age-friendly features throughout, Mercury is a destination the entire family can enjoy, from toddlers to grandparents.

What’s next for your retail strategy?

As we look ahead, we’re focused on elevating the customer experience by expanding our flagship locations and reinforcing their presence as true destination for that “something special”. A key part of that strategy includes pushing for exclusive stock, limited releases, special collaborations, and regional exclusives that set our spaces apart. We want our stores to offer more than just products, there’ll be places where community, pop-culture, and exclusivity come together in a boutique approach. >>

BEYOND THE BLUEPRINT

KNOWN FOR HIS BOLD AESTHETIC AND REFINED ATTENTION TO DETAIL, SEAN ARRIGO AND HIS TEAM HAVE CARVED OUT A DISTINCT NAME IN MALTA’S DESIGN AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT SCENE. HIS RECENT WORK ON ONE OF MERCURY TOWERS’ STANDOUT F&B DESTINATIONS BLENDS TEXTURE, ATMOSPHERE, AND STORYTELLING INTO A SPACE THAT FEELS AS CURATED AS THE MENU. IN THIS INTERVIEW, SEAN SHARES HIS CREATIVE PROCESS, WHAT MAKES A HOSPITALITY SPACE TRULY WORK, AND HOW DESIGN CAN SHAPE NOT JUST MOOD — BUT MEMORY. – A CONVERSATION WITH SEAN ARRIGO >>

Walk us through your typical project workflow, from site selection to handover for a retail franchise like Nike or Guess? What makes your process stand out?

Typically, the site is identified by our client’s local partner. We are then brought in to evaluate the location and collaborate with the brand to assess the site’s strengths and challenges based on our experience. After reviewing the site surveys, surrounding context, limitations, and existing site guidelines (if available), the brand develops a project proposal. This proposal is finally approved by the local partner. Once approved, we assume full responsibility for the project, ensuring adherence to the agreed-upon project costs and parameters. This process has been fine-tuned over many years of collaboration with leading international brands.

INTERVIEW

How do you approach balancing global franchise branding requirements (e.g., Tommy Hilfiger, Mango) with the local spatial and regulatory constraints of each site?

Our approach to balancing global franchise branding requirements with local spatial and regulatory constraints involves a collaborative and flexible process. We start by thoroughly understanding the brand’s core identity, standards, and visual guidelines. Simultaneously, we assess the specific site’s spatial limitations, local regulations, and cultural considerations.

With this knowledge, we work closely with the brand and local authorities to develop design solutions that faithfully represent the brand’s identity while complying with local regulations and adapting to the site’s unique context. Our experience allows us to creatively interpret brand

standards in a way that is both consistent across locations and sensitive to local requirements, ensuring a seamless integration of global branding with site-specific constraints.

This balanced approach ensures the brand’s integrity is maintained while respecting the local environment and regulatory landscape.

With retail and commercial projects comprising 80% of your work, what are the key challenges unique to this sector, and how do you navigate them?

In the retail and commercial sector, some of the key challenges include strict adherence to brand standards, navigating local regulations, managing tight project schedules, and coordinating multiple stakeholders. Additionally, balancing brand consistency with local cultural and environmental considerations can be complex. >>

Q + A INTERVIEW

Tudor Store, Mercury Towers

...“From concept to completion, it’s all about collaboration, clarity, and crafting experiences that truly reflect each brand’s soul.”...

To navigate these challenges, we use our extensive experience to develop tailored solutions that meet both global brand requirements and local constraints. We maintain clear communication and close collaboration with all stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring timely approvals and adaptations as needed. Our proactive planning, along with a flexible and solutions-oriented approach, allows us to deliver projects efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality and brand integrity.

For projects like Ruby Ray’s and Kuch Kuch, where you helped shape the brand experience from scratch, how did you develop the initial design concept and journey?

For projects like Ruby Ray’s and Kuch Kuch, we began by deeply understanding the brand’s core values, target audience, and overall vision. We conducted exhaustive research to identify what resonates most with the client, intended users and how the brand can stand out.

The Mercury Projects seem to involve a wide scope and varied tenants. How do you maintain consistency and quality control across such a complex and dynamic environment?

I believe the key to managing the Mercury Projects successfully has been the incredible and dynamic team behind them. Without their dedication, expertise, and collaboration, none of these projects would have been possible. >>

Fall/Winter – 2025/26 Collection

Craftmanship Tailored For Escape: – Longing For A Special Getaway With Fine Settimana By Weekend Max Mara.

Fine Settimana is the new Weekend Max Mara capsule collection for Fall/Winter 2025-26, co-created with Italian label Giuliva Heritage, founded by Gerardo Cavaliere and Margherita Cardelli, renowned for its impeccable tailoring steeped in the Neapolitan sartorial tradition.

True to its name, Fine Settimana, the Italian for weekend, embodies the essence of Weekend Max Mara, embracing a tailored nonchalance that caters to a woman’s desire for escapism, to swap daily chaos for a quieter retreat where she can relax, unwind and indulge in quality time for herself.

With craftsmanship eclipsing showmanship, the collection is imagined for a strong, resilient, and in-control woman who finds beauty in self-assuredness rather than ostentation. A woman who values no-fuss timelessness, interpreting each piece with confidence thanks to an innate ability to mismatch different elements with grace and harmony.

A combination of contrasts emerges, reflecting a mix of cultures and stratifications that Cavaliere describes as a “contamination,” or a seamless overlap of elements and core values that fosters a sartorial union between Weekend Max Mara and Giuliva Heritage.

The collection alternates tailored prowess with fluid lightness, juxtaposing borrowed-from-your-father-or- grandad silhouettes with feminine flourishes, such as ankle-grazing pleated skirts or blouses featuring wispy silk bows or a pleated front. Trousers are soft and full for a relaxed fit, while the knitwear, including a feminine dress, is rendered in soft mohair or wool blended with silk or cashmere in various finesses.

The Neapolitan tradition is particularly evident in a single-breasted, three-button jacket with a first buttonhole on the lapel that is intentionally reversed and remains unfastened. This detail pays homage to an old tradition that allowed observers to identify the craftsman and master tailor behind the creation.

An oversized cocooning coat with a wide collar and back pleats showcases the principle of layers, while a single- breasted style in chevron wool channels a lady of the manor elegance.

Embracing the idea of lasting quality, the prized fabrics include fine wools in solids, mélange, pinstripes, and Shetland patterns. Cotton poplin, silk, corduroy, denim, and leather complement the range. The color palette, which includes grays, baby blues, hazy earth tones, autumnal foliage hues, wine red and purple, draws inspiration from nature.

The revisited Pasticcino Bag, inspired by a classic doctor’s bag in durable vegetable-tanned leather with a sponged finish, and a pair of leather riding boots, complement an exquisite collection imagined to be styled liberally and with plenty of character.

NIGHTLIFE

RAI S ING THE BAR

Having long stood as a marker of cosmopolitan cool, Radio Rooftop is now reimagined entirely by ME by Meliá. Born in London and Ibiza and now expanding to major style capitals, the concept fuses skyline views, bold design, modern Asian dining, and music driven energy into one elevated destination. Now, this celebrated global brand has landed in Malta. Poised atop the striking ME Malta hotel in St Julian’s, Radio Rooftop is more than a bar, it’s a statement. And it’s set to reshape the island’s nightlife from twenty floors above the ground.

The rooftop bar has long been a symbol of urban sophistication, but Meliá Hotels International has levelled it up - literally and figuratively, with its signature Radio Rooftop concept under the ME by Meliá portfolio. First launched in cities like London and Ibiza in ME’s flagship properties, Radio Rooftop has redefined high-altitude hospitality, combining panoramic views, modern Asian cuisine, and a soundtrack of curated DJ sets to create one of the most sought-after nightlife experiences in the luxury travel space.

Successfully spanning London, Ibiza, Madrid, Milan and Stiges, this celebrated concept is now preparing to make waves in Malta. Crowning the striking new ME Malta hotel in St Julian’s, Radio Rooftop is set to become one of the island’s most exclusive hospitality venues. Opening this summer, Radio Rooftop Malta marks a significant step in the evolution of the island.

A Global Concept with Local Edge

Radio Rooftop was born out of the ME brand’s commitment to experiential, design-driven hospitality. At its core, the concept merges three key elements: an inspiring setting, sensory dining experience, and a vibrant social atmosphere anchored by music. Whether sipping cocktails high above the London skyline or sharing plates beside the Balearic Sea in Ibiza, the Radio Rooftop experience is as much about ambience as it is about taste.

Now entering its next chapter, the brand is expanding with renewed energy. Radio Rooftop London recently underwent a major refurbishment, unveiling a new Asian-inspired menu and upgraded interiors in 2024. With its Maltese debut, the concept finds a dramatic new home - 20 floors above the ground in one of the most architecturally ambitious properties to grace the region.

A Menu Made to Share

In keeping with the Radio Rooftop tradition, the Malta location will feature a menu built around modern Asian small plates. The dining experience emphasises sharing, culinary creativity, and visual appeal - think maki rolls, yakitori skewers, and elevated dim sum, all presented with a unique flair.

The drinks menu is rooted in the art of mixology. Expect expertly crafted cocktails infused with Japanese spirits, seasonal ingredients, and the signature Radio Rooftop verve. From bold and smoky to light and floral, each creation is designed to complement both the cuisine and the setting.

A Cultural Catalyst

More than a bar, Radio Rooftop is a social hub and cultural catalyst. By combining design, music, and cuisine, each venue energises the local hospitality scene, attracting a cosmopolitan clientele.

SPOTLIGHT NIGHTLIFE

...“Radio Rooftop redefines altitude with attitude —

flavours & views that stretch forever”...

It aligns perfectly with the broader ME by Meliá ethos, which prioritises creativity, individuality, and cultural exchange.

Bringing the concept to Malta represents a strategic move for Meliá Hotels International, as the group continues to expand its ME brand across Europe and the Americas. With new properties planned for Lisbon, Marbella and Malaga, the brand is focused on growing its footprint in vibrant, design-forward destinations.

ME Malta: A New Landmark

Located in the heart of St Julian’s within the Mercury Towers development, ME Malta is a design marvel brought to life by Zaha Hadid’s studio.

The property combines avant-garde architecture with immersive lifestyle programming across 113 rooms, 27 suites, and 35 private residences. It’s a hotel designed to impress, and the rooftop is its showstopper.

ME Malta brings together a trio of standout venues: Luciano by Gino D’Acampo on Level 5, the Cabana Club on Level 8, and Radio Rooftop on Level 20. Together, they create a layered culinary journey that moves seamlessly from poolside lunches to fine dining and vibrant nightlife.

Radio Rooftop Malta: The Sky’s the Limit

Radio Rooftop Malta sits atop it all, offering 360-degree views over the St Julian’s coastline,

the open sea, and the island’s urban core. The sleek indoor-outdoor space, framed by floorto-ceiling glass and minimalist design accents, promises an elegant yet lively environment that evolves from dawn to dusk.

During daylight hours, it’s a relaxed lounge-style venue, ideal for lazy lunches that extend long into the evening, and cocktail-fuelled sunset sessions. As the night draws in, the space transforms, bathed in moody lighting and brought to life by an international roster of DJs, live performers, and curated events. The rooftop pool adds an extra layer of luxury, allowing guests to soak up the skyline in style. >>

Malta’s Moment

UPDATES NIGHTLIFE

For Malta, the arrival of ME and its flagship rooftop concept signals a shift toward more upscale, lifestyle-oriented tourism. While the island has long been known for its beaches and historic architecture, recent years have seen a push toward contemporary luxury, especially in the hospitality, gastronomy, and events sectors.

Radio Rooftop Malta embodies this new direction. It’s bold, stylish, and international in spirit, yet grounded in its Mediterranean setting. And with its sweeping views, striking design, and curated guest experience, it’s set to become a must-visit destination for locals and travellers alike.

WELCOME TO LUCIANO

Gino D’Acampo needs little introduction. Beloved for his larger-than-life personality, passion for authentic Italian cuisine, and numerous successful restaurants across the UK, the celebrity chef has now chosen Malta as the home of his first international venture. Nestled in the heart of the vibrant Mercury Towers development, Gino’s newest restaurant promises to bring a true taste of Italy to the island, complete with bold flavours, warm hospitality, and that unmistakable Gino flair. In this exclusive interview, Gino shares why Malta captured his heart, what guests can expect from his new dining destination, and how tradition, authenticity, and a love for life continue to shape everything he does, from the kitchen to the table.

What drew you to open your restaurant here, and specifically at Mercury Towers?

I’ve been looking to open my first international restaurant for the past three years, and I was looking for a place with a long summer, great food, culture, and strong Italian heritage. Malta came out on top of my list. The reason I chose Mercury Towers is because I wanted to be in the coolest part of the island, with the greatest operators in town, and Mercury Towers has both.

You’ve opened restaurants in some incredible cities—what makes the Maltese dining scene stand out to you?

Malta produces great ingredients, and the locals have a huge passion for food, just like the Italians, so it was an easy choice for me. The dining scene is second to none, and people are always up for good food and good wine.

Tell us about the concept behind your restaurant at Mercury. What can guests expect from the menu and the atmosphere?

The concept is simple, and it’s proven successful wherever I open my restaurants. We only prepare dishes with seasonal, local produce and give guests the real Italian experience, from the moment they enter my restaurant to the very end. We welcome families and children as we would in our own home, but we’re also ready to party for any big events or celebrations. We have it all.

Were there any Maltese influences or local ingredients that made their way into your new menus?

Malta is full of fantastic local ingredients; their fish and vegetables are incredibly tasty, so it’s very easy for me and my chefs to create amazing Italian dishes. One ingredient in particular is the extra virgin olive oil produced on the island of Gozo, delicious!!!

Your food is all about authenticity with personality—how do you balance tradition with innovation?

One thing I’ve learned in the past 30 years of cooking is that tradition and innovation don’t always go hand in hand. The secret is simple: if

it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it. I mean, there’s very little innovation needed for a great Bucatini alla Carbonara, just get the right authentic ingredients, cook it as it should be, serve it well, and the job is done. Minimum effort, maximum satisfaction!

Do you approach designing a restaurant space differently when opening abroad? How involved were you in the look and feel at Mercury?

To be honest, I don’t. I try to keep the look of my restaurants consistent, and I’ve realised that, so far, it works for any city or country where I propose my designs. I’m very involved in the look and design of my restaurants because I believe it’s a crucial part of the experience. As my grandfather used to say, you must please the eyes as well as the stomach.

What has been your favourite part of the journey in bringing this project to life?

Dealing with the local Maltese community and people. I immediately felt like I was at home in Italy. The locals are full of passion for life and food, and that’s the only thing I needed. >>

CULINARY

How important is it for you to create not just a place to eat, but an experience?

Creating a good restaurant with great food is not enough. Guests have lots of options nowadays, so the experience is equally important. When you enter my restaurants, our aim is to make guests feel like they are in Italy for a couple of hours, that’s the real experience. I’ve employed the best Italians in Malta, and I’m super confident we’ll give a taste of real Italy to anyone who comes into my restaurant.

You’re known for being passionate and hands-on, can we expect to see you cooking in the kitchen or greeting guests in Malta?

Yes, you’ll see me quite a lot. Unfortunately for my colleagues, I do like to get very, very involved. I say “unfortunately” because sometimes I can be a little too much, always looking for perfection and attention to detail. I think it’s normal, but many think I’m a pain!

And finally, what is your perfect meal at your new restaurant from starter to dessert?

Not an easy question to answer, considering we all have our own Italian favourites, but mine would be:

Starter: Tre Cicchetti dal Mare, a selection of antipasti from the sea. I like to have a sharing starter so I can get the best of everything on the menu, and it feels very Italian to share at the table.

Main: Linguine Vongole, pasta with clams. First, because this is my late mother’s recipe, just the way she showed me when I was a little boy; and second, because the clams in Malta are delicious.

Dessert: Tiramisù, an Italian classic that is now our signature dish at Luciano London and very soon at Luciano Malta. I love coffee, so this was an easy choice for me. >>

“I wanted long summers, great food, and strong Italian heritage. Malta had it all—and Mercury Towers sealed the deal”

This is my very first international adventure, and I couldn’t wish for a better place to open. Malta and the Maltese people have been fantastic to me, they took me into their homes like family, and I will never forget it. I thank you ALL for the love and experience so far, and I am looking forward to many parties together, surrounded by great Italian food and great people. Malta, I do love you. Grazie xx

a century of luxury

Edwards Lowell is celebrating 100 years of timeless luxury across three generations, marking the vision and dedication of the family business in the realm of quality watches and jewellery. From its beginnings in other ventures in Valletta to representing iconic international watch brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe, the company is looking back at its journey of growth in the luxury goods business and ahead to an equally bright future as the third generation steps in.

Over the past century, Edwards Lowell Co. Ltd has built a fine reputation, based on the values of “quality, style and attention to detail”.

Speaking about the significance of the milestone anniversary, Malcolm Lowell Snr, who was instrumental in introducing luxury watches in the 1970s, said “100 years is a long time for any company, especially a small business in a small and very competitive market”.

He expressed his satisfaction at having gone “from strength to strength, while at the same time achieving and retaining full family ownership. As regards the highlights and key turning points throughout the last century, Lowell Snr credited his wife Isabelle for her “great help” in managing to completely turn around the activities of the business from wholesale foodstuffs and clothing – “beset with enormous problems of governmentimposed import substitution and import license restrictions” – towards quality watches and jewellery, which “we have always loved”.

The emphasis has always been on full control of retail boutiques in the most prominent positions, Lowell Snr continued about the winning strategy.

“After all those years, it was with great pride for both Isabelle and myself to see our children Annabelle and Malcolm take a very strong interest in our business.

“They have now taken over the general day-today running with great success, providing the key to the future, while allowing us to relax and take a back seat in full confidence.”

As to how the scenario has developed over the years, Edwards Lowell managing director Malcolm R Lowell said the luxury goods business has changed dramatically since the dawn of social media, turning the top brands into megabrands and relatively niche brands into highly coveted and well-known icons. The auctions business also had an impact on this, and there is no indication of things slowing down in the coming years, he continued.

“We were in the fortunate position to be able to invest and build on our past. At the right moment, the family did exactly that. It was not apparent at the time, but in hindsight, it was very much about taking advantage of the opportunities at the apt time,” Lowell said.

The company will now be honouring this achievement, 100 years of “quality, detail, luxury, experience, heritage, style, dedication, family and hard work” – with special celebrations throughout the year and surprises in store.

The main event is a gala dinner in June that Edwards Lowell intends to “make memorable”, for an intimate group of patrons and business partners.

“We will have a curated exhibition of our main brands along with some novelties and memorabilia,” Lowell revealed.

UPDATE LUXURY

Telling the timeline

Edwards Lowell was established in 1925 by Charles E Lowell, who started his journey in the textiles and food products business, moving into luxury watches when he was appointed the official distributor for Rolex in Malta in the 1940s. This was the catalyst for his son Malcolm Lowell Snr, who, driven by his love for fine Swiss watches, gradually turned the business around in the 1960s and 1970s to concentrate exclusively on the finest quality timepieces and, later, expand its portfolio to include the best jewellery brands on the international market.

Together with his wife Isabelle and children, Annabelle Bonello Lowell and Malcolm R. Lowell, and in keeping with their commitment to give their valued clientele a dedicated service and that personalised touch, the company is today a leader in this sector in Malta.

Now run by the third-generation, together with the rest of the Lowell family, it remains the exclusive Maltese distributor for all the brands it represents. Edwards Lowell expanded to represent the

prestigious Patek Philippe brand in 1980. The landmark watch shop in Zachary Street, Valletta, opened in 1980, followed by the launch of The Music Shop opposite in 1984, which later transitioned into a bookshop. Next came the unique Chopard agency in1995 and Breitling in 1998.

The Spinola Bay boutique opened in 2007, and Edwards Lowell went on to represent more highend brands, including Hublot, Pomellato and Girard Perreagaux that same year.

The family business was restructured in 2013, with the third-generation son appointed managing director and daughter director, paving the way for significant expansion.

The Rolex Boutique opened in Republic Street, Valletta, in 2018, and a year later in 2019, the Portomaso Concept Store in St Julian’s was also launched, while 2020 marked the opening of the Cartier and Patek Philippe boutique in

Valletta’s Republic Street.

Edwards Lowell Books, representing big brands such as Taschen and Assouline, also came to life in Zachary Street in 2023, while last year 2024, saw the inauguration of two more boutiques, Breitling and Tudor, in Mercury Towers, St Julian’s, taking the number of brands to 16 in seven shops.

The Swiss connection

Other key moments in the company’s timeline include its appointment as general sales agents for Swissair in 1961 and that of Malcolm Lowell Snr as Honorary Consul of Switzerland in1972, aged only 24 where he took over from his father Charles who was Honorary Consul since 1937. The role of consul of Switzerland has been handed down along the generations, and when he stepped down in 2015, after 42 years of service, the baton was passed on to Annabelle, who is continuing the family’s legacy of Honorary Consul General for Switzerland in Malta.

csb group launches unico yachting

In a setting as refined as the brand it unveiled, the Royal Malta Yacht Club played host to the official launch of UNICO Yachting — a sophisticated new player in the Mediterranean’s luxury yacht brokerage and charter arena. Founded by Michael J. Zammit, Group CEO of CSB Group and the visionary behind Malta Sotheby’s International Realty, UNICO enters the market with an ambitious promise: to redefine the yachting experience through a seamless, end-to-end service model that blends maritime passion with corporate precision.

Following an elegant launch event held at the Royal Malta Yacht Club that drew a curated audience of clients, collaborators, and yachting enthusiasts, UNICO Yachting has officially made its debut. As the latest venture by Michael J. Zammit. Group CEO of CSB Group, UNICO enters the Mediterranean’s premium yacht brokerage and charter scene with an offering that is both integrated and highly personalised.

Rooted in Zammit’s long-standing passion for the sea and his experience leading one of Malta’s most established corporate services firms and also that of Malta Sotheby’s International Realty, UNICO Yachting aims to simplify the often complex world of yacht ownership, charter, and management. “The idea behind UNICO was to create a brand that goes beyond the transaction. We wanted to provide a full-service

experience for clients who expect more,” Zammit says.

That full-service approach is what truly defines UNICO. In addition to yacht sales and charters, the company offers a comprehensive suite of services: yacht registration, ownership structuring and fiscal support, VAT structuring, yacht finance, insurance, crew payroll and contracts, surveys, and ongoing yacht care. Through its close ties with CSB Group and Malta Sotheby’s International Realty, UNICO clients also gain access to prestigious property, trusted corporate services, tax advise, residency application support, licensing of regulated industries and more, all under one umbrella.

This integrated model caters to the expectations of today’s luxury clients, who are looking for

seamless, discreet, and expert-led service. “Our clients appreciate having a single point of contact for everything,” says Zammit. “They don’t just want a yacht, they want someone to handle the process from end to end, with no loose ends.”

Malta, where UNICO is based, continues to strengthen its position as a strategic yachting hub in the Mediterranean. Its attractive flag registry, modern marinas, and central location make it a compelling base for both owners and charterers. Zammit believes that Malta’s yachting infrastructure, combined with its financial and jurisdiction reputation, makes it ideal for clients looking to moor or register their yachts in Europe. >>

Left: Paula Strickland, Roger A Strickland Jr., Nicholas Strickland, Michael J. Zammit, Therese Zammit & Tony Zammit. Inset: Karen Zammits, Michela Zammit & Nina Zammit who could not attend the event.

When asked about current trends, Zammit points to enduring demand for established builders like San Lorenzo, Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, and Benetti. These brands are consistently popular among clients for their craftsmanship, design, and comfort. Charter clients, too, are increasingly looking for well-managed yachts with crew that can deliver tailored onboard experiences – making them unforgettable. In line with its tech-forward approach, UNICO Yachting also facilitates virtual yacht tours, and accepts cryptocurrency payment, a nod to the evolving expectations of global clients who prioritise speed, flexibility, and privacy.

“A full-service yachting experience, designed for clients who expect more”

Looking ahead, Zammit says the focus is on selective growth. “We’re not aiming to be the biggest. We’re focused on quality, on building lasting relationships with our clients, and ensuring they receive the kind of service that reflects their lifestyle and standards.”

The brand’s launch event marked the beginning of that journey, setting the tone for what UNICO Yachting promises to deliver: a new benchmark in yacht brokerage and charter, backed by decades of expertise and a commitment to integrity and trust, that accompanies those passionate about yachting throughout their nautical experience.
