“A Brand for Every Stay: Hilton’s Global Vision”
“Leading hospitality’s next era.”
...“SUCCESS ISN’T LINEAR—IT’S ABOUT STEPPING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND CONTINUALLY ADAPTING TO NEW CHALLENGES”...
Hilton Worldwide continues to solidify its position as one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking hospitality companies in the world. With a portfolio that now includes 24 distinctive brands, Hilton has grown far beyond its roots, offering something for every type of traveler—from luxury seekers to digital nomads and urban explorers.
As of early 2025, Hilton operates over 8,600 properties across 139 countries and territories, accounting for more than 1.3 million rooms globally. This impressive scale is matched by an equally ambitious development pipeline, with thousands of new rooms approved and hundreds of hotels under construction. Hilton’s success lies not only in its size but in its thoughtful approach to brand expansion. The group has strategically diversified its offerings, balancing flagship brands like Hilton Hotels & Resorts and DoubleTree with newer, design-forward concepts such as Canopy, Motto, Tempo, and the millennial-minded Spark.
In recent months, Hilton has doubled down on its presence in the lifestyle and luxury space. Its lifestyle collection has reached a major milestone, surpassing 1,000 open hotels, with nearly 500 more in development. These brands are resonating with modern travelers seeking locally inspired experiences, social design, and an elevated sense of place. On average, Hilton is now opening three new lifestyle properties every week, underscoring both demand and momentum.
Recent additions to the Hilton family include the boutique-inspired NoMad brand, launching with its first property in London, and the innovative Graduate Hotels, a college-town brand that brings nostalgic, locally inspired design to university-adjacent markets. Both represent Hilton’s ongoing effort to curate properties that appeal to specific communities, tastes, and travel habits—while leveraging the power of the Hilton ecosystem.
Behind this expansion is a deliberate strategy to serve “any stay occasion” and deliver strong brand differentiation. Hilton’s full brand architecture stretches across luxury, lifestyle, full-service, focused-service, and extended-stay
accommodations, with a growing footprint in vacation ownership. By offering dual-branded developments and franchise-friendly models, Hilton is accelerating its reach into both established and emerging markets, all while maintaining a sharp focus on quality and guest experience.
According to President and CEO Chris Nassetta, Hilton’s forward momentum is rooted in both confidence and adaptability. Even amid a shifting global economy, Hilton continues to prioritise innovation, long-term development, and meaningful guest engagement. The strategy is clear: to lead not just in room count, but in relevance, resonance, and results.
With new brands emerging, development pipelines growing, and guest expectations evolving, Hilton is well-positioned to continue shaping the future of travel—and doing so at scale. >>

Malta’s social scene just raised the bar. On May 30, the buzz around Sabi and Kora came to life with a dazzling launch event that offered attendees an exclusive first look at two game-changing venues, now officially open in St Paul’s Bay.
Hosted by Tumas Group and DoubleTree by Hilton Malta, the evening was a curated blend of culture, cuisine, and community. Attendees— ranging from key stakeholders and corporate clients to influencers, tastemakers, and media— were treated to a preview of what’s to come.
Sabi made its mark as more than just a beach club or a restaurant—it’s a full lifestyle brand. From the refined vibe of Sabi House to the laid-back charm of Sabi Café and the stylish yet family-friendly Sabi Beach Club, the concept effortlessly bridges casual luxury with versatility.
“THE ATMOSPHERE WAS VIBRANT, THE GUEST FEEDBACK OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE, AND THE SENSE OF ANTICIPATION UNMISTAKABLE.”
Meanwhile, Kora and Kora Terrace turned heads with their chic design and promise of high-end adult-only beachside escapism, setting the tone for elevated dining, exclusive events and unforgettable sunset sessions.
The launch event featured beautifully presented tasters and signature cocktails from both
concepts, live music, ambient DJ sets, and guided previews of each area. The atmosphere was vibrant, the guest feedback overwhelmingly positive, and the sense of anticipation unmistakable.
Now officially open, Sabi and Kora are already shaping up to be this season’s most sought-after destinations—inviting guests to dine, unwind,
connect, and celebrate in two distinct yet complementary environments. Ø

Fifty Nine Republic is a standout culinary establishment located in the heart of Valletta’s vibrant dining scene. Founded in 2017 by Chef Patron Maria Sammut, it has consistently led the way in Malta’s restaurant landscape— remarkably, as one of the few restaurants in the country helmed by a female chef.
From its inception, the restaurant has embraced innovation. Most recently, it completed a full renovation and interior refresh, offering its distinguished patrons a revitalized space with a vibrant, contemporary atmosphere.
Set in St. George’s Square, directly opposite the Grandmaster’s Palace, Fifty Nine Republic enjoys a spectacular location. Guests can unwind on the charming outdoor patio with direct views of the President’s Palace, or dine inside a 500-year-old room adorned with traditional stone arches and elegant marble floors.
The overall experience strikes a harmonious balance between elegance and playfulness, making it a benchmark for casual fine dining in Malta. It’s a venue with a distinctive and enchanting character—where every visit feels
special, whether it’s a first-time rendezvous or a return to a beloved favourite.
The cuisine reflects a refined fusion of Mediterranean, French, and subtle Asian influences—what Chef Maria describes as “comforting and satisfying.” Designed for sharing, the starter menu encourages a social dining experience, while signature mains like the Beef Wellington and desserts such as the After Eight Baked Alaska keep guests coming back for more.
Earlier this year, the restaurant closed temporarily to unveil an exciting new look. “We are thrilled to offer our guests a welcoming and updated space for their dining pleasure,” said Chef Patron Maria Sammut. “Our goal is for guests to feel relaxed and at home, while enjoying an exceptional dining experience. Every detail is crafted to feel luxurious yet authentic.”
Both Chef Maria and Fifty Nine Republic have earned significant recognition, including the title of Maltese Chef of the Year and the prestigious Michelin Plate for six consecutive years.
While its iconic signature pink still makes an appearance—seen in the custom china and
soft pink velvet chairs—it’s now complemented by rich American walnut, deep green leather sofas lining two walls, and striking Indian green marble floors laid in a herringbone pattern. These elements beautifully contrast with the fluted Shanghai marble bar, creating a sophisticated and visually captivating setting.
Whether you’re a design lover or a foodie, Fifty Nine Republic is a feast for the senses. Open daily for both lunch and dinner, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Malta. Ø

Tucked along the coastline of St. Paul’s Bay, Kora offers a distinct take on contemporary Mediterranean dining. This adults-only venue blends minimalist sophistication with coastal charm—an experience where every detail, from the soundtrack to the plating, is thoughtfully curated.
Kora’s culinary approach is built on contrast: bold flavours meet delicate presentation, comfort meets refinement, and local inspiration meets international flair. The menu reflects this ethos beautifully.
“BOLD FLAVOURS MEET DELICATE PRESENTATION, COMFORT MEETS REFINEMENT, AND LOCAL INSPIRATION MEETS INTERNATIONAL FLAIR.”
Among the recommended starters, the prawn and ’nduja croquettes deliver a balanced punch—crisp and golden on the outside, with a rich, spicy centre that lingers just enough to pair perfectly with that first sip of wine or an early cocktail.
Another signature item—loukoumades—may surprise traditionalists. At Kora, these aren’t the syrupy sweet Greek doughnuts many might expect. Instead, they’re reimagined as savoury delights, filled with creamy feta, sun-dried tomatoes, Greek olives and red pepper. They offer the kind of unexpected bite that sparks conversation and leaves a lasting impression.
Kora is also known for its Crudi & Raw selections and its sushi offering, both of which have become crowd favourites among regular guests. Delicate, immaculately presented, and
full of clean, bold flavour, these dishes provide a refreshing, elegant contrast that reflects the venue’s coastal setting.
For those looking to share, the orzo seafood for two has quickly become a house favourite. Generous, beautifully layered, and full of depth, the dish combines al dente orzo with a bounty of fresh seafood, cooked to perfection and served with understated elegance. It’s a centrepiece for the table—one that invites slow dining and second helpings.
The rack of lamb is equally memorable, balancing richness with a fresh seasonal garnish that elevates the dish from classic to contemporary.
And for a true show of indulgence, few options rival the lobster, served with subtle flair, it
captures the essence of luxury dining by the sea, offering delicate sweetness and perfectly balanced accompaniments.
Alongside the food, Kora’s cocktail menu brings its own flair to the table. Two signatures stand out: Muyu, with it’s nutty yet tangy finish; and Passionate Kiss, a more playful, fruit-forward creation that’s equal parts bright, smooth, and celebratory.
Kora’s strength lies not just in its setting, but in its commitment to creating experiences. Whether you’re visiting for a sunset dinner, a long lunch, or simply to enjoy drinks by the sea, Kora offers a refined escape—where each dish and every detail speaks the language of barefoot luxury. Ø

“BLUE ELEPHANT IS MORE THAN JUST A MEAL — IT’S A REFINED JOURNEY THROUGH THE VIBRANT HEART OF THAILAND, RIGHT IN THE LUXURIOUS SETTING OF HILTON MALTA.”
Located within the luxurious Hilton Malta, Blue Elephant Restaurant offers diners a refined journey through the rich culinary traditions of Thailand. Known for its vibrant ambiance and authentic décor, this elegant venue is the ideal destination for those seeking a memorable dining experience in the heart of St. Julian’s.
Under the expert guidance of Head Chef Jam, the kitchen at Blue Elephant brings the very best of Thai cuisine to Malta. With a commitment to using fresh ingredients, balanced flavours, and authentic techniques, Chef Jam and his team craft a menu that perfectly captures the essence of Thailand.
This season, guests are invited to savour some of the chef’s personal recommendations:
Start your meal with the Prawn Tempura, where delicately crisp batter encases tender prawns, complemented by a subtle dipping sauce. Alternatively, the Spring Roll Sod offers a lighter option, bursting with the freshness of herbs and crisp vegetables wrapped in delicate rice paper.
A highlight of the menu is the Tom Yam Koong, a traditional Thai soup that masterfully balances sour, spicy, and aromatic notes, with king prawns infusing the broth with a rich seafood essence.
For the main course, the Spicy Duck is a standout, offering tender slices of duck in a rich, spicy sauce that captures the bold spirit of Thai flavours. Equally enticing are the King Prawns, prepared to highlight the natural sweetness and delicate texture of the seafood, complemented
by authentic Thai seasoning.
To complement the meal, the Drunken Bee cocktail is a must-try. This signature creation combines bold flavours with a hint of sweetness, delivering a perfectly balanced drink that pairs wonderfully with the restaurant’s vibrant dishes.
Finally, for dessert, indulge in the Thai Chocolate Mousse, which blends creamy textures with deep cocoa notes for a truly indulgent finale. Blue Elephant Restaurant offers more than just a meal; it’s an experience designed to transport guests to the heart of Thailand. Whether dining with family, friends, or colleagues, the warm hospitality and exceptional culinary craftsmanship make every visit a memorable occasion. Ø

2 Series Coupé: The Enthusiast’s BMW For purists, the 2 Series Coupé is the beating heart of the lineup. With its classic rear-wheel-drive architecture, near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, and aggressive stance, it captures the essence of BMW’s driving legacy. This is where sportiness isn’t just a selling point — it’s the soul of the car.
The Coupé isn’t built for the daily grind. It’s built for winding roads, spontaneous getaways, and weekend adventures. It’s for those who believe that driving should still involve a bit of magic — a precise steering feel, a responsive throttle, and the kind of confidence that only comes from a truly balanced chassis.
"THE 2 SERIES LINEUP ASKS NOT WHAT YOU NEED FROM A CAR — BUT WHO YOU ARE AS A DRIVER."
2 Series Gran Coupé: The Stylish Urban Statement
The 2 Series Gran Coupé is the perfect entry into the BMW world — youthful, elegant, and unmistakably premium. Its sleek, coupeinspired silhouette paired with the practicality of four doors makes it an ideal choice for
urban explorers, young professionals, or styleconscious commuters.
Beneath the sculpted bodywork lies a host of technology designed to make daily life easier and more enjoyable — from BMW’s advanced infotainment systems to driver assistance features
that make tight city streets feel like wide-open roads. This is the car for those who want the prestige and performance of a BMW, without sacrificing usability or space.
At the sharp end of the spectrum sits the BMW M2 — an icon reborn for a new generation of thrill-seekers. It’s more than just the highperformance version of the 2 Series Coupé; it’s a full-blooded M car, engineered by BMW’s legendary M division to deliver blistering performance and razor-sharp handling in a compact, muscular form.
The M2 is unapologetically bold, with wide fenders, an aggressive front end, and a roaring turbocharged engine that begs to be unleashed. Whether you’re hitting apexes on a track day or carving up your favorite backroad, the M2 turns every drive into an event. It’s not just a car — it’s a declaration of driving passion.
"THE M2 DOESN’T WHISPER PERFORMANCE — IT SHOUTS IT."
The 2 Series Active Tourer flips the script by offering a compact car that thinks big. With a more upright stance, generous interior space, and clever storage solutions, it’s designed with real life in mind — whether you’re managing school runs, weekend getaways, or an active lifestyle filled with gear and gadgets.
Don’t let the practicality fool you — this is still a BMW at heart. That means responsive handling, a refined interior, and tech-forward features like hybrid powertrains and the latest BMW iDrive system. It’s perfect for families or individuals who want the flexibility of a crossover without stepping away from the premium driving experience BMW is known for.
Inbøund meets Co-Ma to talk artistic risk, raw emotion, and the fine line between light and shadow.
Your first exhibition at Lily Agius Gallery in 2021 made a big impact. What was your approach when creating this collection, and where did you draw your inspiration from?
Inspiration is basically a buildup of things I go through, see, or experience — and it all came together in that collection. I can’t really pinpoint any one thing; it was more of a “What can I do with charcoal?” kind of exploration. I’ve always been drawn to portraiture, so it was clear which direction I would take.
Charcoal has been your medium of choice for many years. What is it about charcoal that makes it so special for you?
It’s a very interesting medium to work with. It’s dirty, dusty, and very hands-on at the start, but as you progress and go into more detail, it becomes about adding and subtracting, building thin layers. It’s really just playing around with light and shadow.
Your latest collection for your upcoming show is painted in oil. Why the change, and why now? What does oil offer in contrast to charcoal, in terms of technique and effects? Why the change?
Honestly, just to make my life more difficult! I wanted to do this show using a medium I’ve never worked with before. I’m basically learning as I go. I enjoy the risk of failing — and with a limited amount of time, it makes the challenge even better.
I’ve been wanting to get into oil for a while, but never really had the time — apart from a couple of small, unfinished portraits I tried a few months ago. Oil is actually quite similar to charcoal in terms of possibilities. >>
“OIL PAINTING IS A NEW CHALLENGE I’M EXCITED TO TAKE ON.”
Charcoal doesn’t dry — it remains open until you spray it with fixative. Oil takes a long time to dry too, so you can keep working in layers, building up slowly.
Your attention to detail is incredible. How do you balance the meticulous aspects of your work with more spontaneous moments in the process?
There’s no conscious balance — it’s just an ongoing process. You know what needs to be done next, and it only ends when you decide it’s done.
Light and shadow seem to play a huge
role in your work. Can you walk us through how you approach capturing these elements so effectively?
Everything we see around us is just light and shadow. It becomes very apparent when you simplify what you’re looking at.
What do you want people to feel or think when they experience your art? Is there a message you’re hoping to communicate?
It’s never really about the message for me. What people feel depends on their own lives and experiences — the connection someone has with a painting will be completely different from one
person to another. I make art and music because it’s the only thing that keeps me sane… oh, and the cats. :)
The topic of your next exhibition, opening 9 May at Spazju Kreattiv, is the ‘7 Deadly Sins’. What’s your take on the deadly sins and, if you can say, how are you depicting them? Is the topic inspiring a new approach to painting and imagery?
The ‘deadly sins’ are an interesting — and sometimes tricky — subject to take on, and I just hope my efforts will offer something intriguing to the public. These so-called vices are mentioned in writings far older than Christianity — from >>
“CHARCOAL IS ALL ABOUT PLAYING WITH LIGHT AND SHADOW.”
ancient Greek philosophy to Norse mythology — so they resonate beyond religious fear or dogma.
How I’m depicting them varies. Some pieces portray the act itself, others are personifications of the sin, and some are meant to make the viewer feel part of the painting… or at least I hope so.
Your art has strong references to the Old Masters and the Renaissance. What draws you to that period, and how does it show up in your upcoming show?
The scale, the beauty, and the way the human body was depicted during that time really draw me in. I’ve always been interested in religious art and text, even though I’m not religious myself. Like many in Malta, I was raised Catholic, but the only thing that ever captured my attention in church were the painted ceilings — I had no clue what was being said.
I love everything from Medieval to Baroque — especially the Renaissance. You had ancient knowledge being rediscovered, radical new ideas, heresies, ruthless monarchs, dirty politics, and religious clashes… it was exciting, to say the least. This exhibition explores a subject
that’s been discussed in various religions and mythologies, but was formalized as a list of vices by a Catholic pope. I’m approaching it from a more humanist perspective.
Can you tell us about the artistic process behind this show?
Well… it wasn’t the dreamy, bohemian, meditative artist experience, that’s for sure! My whole body is in pain from the long hours and lack of sleep. I’ve been working over 15 hours a day — it almost feels like I’m repenting for my own petty sins. Ø

LIVE LIFE THE GRAND WAY WITH MALTA’S GRAND WINE.
GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE BY MALTA’S FOREMOST WINERY.
Baglio Occhipinti: The Warmth of a House in the Sicilian Countryside Refined and romantic surroundings, organic food and wine, and an embrace of true nature.
In the heart of southeastern Sicily, nestled in the sundrenched countryside of Ragusa, lies a hidden gem where time seems to slow and nature takes center stage. Baglio Occhipinti, a lovingly restored 17th-century farmhouse, is more than just a relais — it is a home, a sanctuary, and a celebration of Sicily’s agricultural soul.
Once a modest rural hamlet devoted to vineyards and olive groves, Baglio Occhipinti has evolved into a baglio — a traditional Sicilian estate where the enclosing stone walls once offered shelter to families working the land. Today, it stands as a place of refined hospitality, where the rhythms of nature guide your stay and every corner tells a story of preservation, authenticity, and care. >>
With just twelve elegantly restored rooms, Baglio Occhipinti offers an intimate and immersive experience. Each suite is the result of a meticulous conservation effort, maintaining the original stone walls and architectural features that root the estate firmly in Sicilian history. These charming spaces offer comfort without compromise, blending rustic beauty with thoughtful design.
Here, nature is not merely a backdrop — it is the lifeblood of the entire estate. Baglio Occhipinti is also a certified organic farm, and its commitment to sustainability is evident in every detail. From freshly pressed olive oil to seasonal vegetables, the philosophy is simple: nourish from the ground up. Guests are invited to reconnect with food, taste traditional Sicilian recipes, and explore the rich agricultural bounty of the land.
Whether you’re enjoying a glass of local wine beside the pool, savoring homemade dishes under the citrus trees, or wandering through aromatic herb gardens, every experience at Baglio Occhipinti is rooted in the earth. Guests are encouraged to pick fruit straight from the trees or visit the vegetable garden to understand where their meals begin — a true farm-to-table lifestyle.
The estate spans over ten hectares in the Val di Noto, right in the heart of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, Sicily’s only controlled designation of origin for wine. It’s a haven for wine lovers and an ideal base for exploring the region’s celebrated wineries, baroque cities, and nearby archaeological treasures. >>
The estate’s pool is a serene retreat framed by lush gardens and citrus groves — a perfect spot for an afternoon aperitif or a candlelit dinner under the stars. From romantic getaways to quiet personal retreats, the atmosphere invites deep relaxation and a sense of reconnection with yourself and the natural world.
Located just a short drive from the Mediterranean coast and cities like Ragusa, Modica, and Scicli, Baglio Occhipinti offers the best of both worlds: peaceful countryside living and access to Sicily’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Whether it’s tasting world-class wines, exploring baroque masterpieces, or simply wandering through olive orchards, guests leave with a deeper understanding of Sicilian identity.
With a range of thoughtfully curated packages and seasonal offers, Fausta and the Occhipinti family ensure that every stay is memorable. Their warmth and hospitality create a welcoming space where guests become part of the extended family — a sentiment that lingers long after the trip ends.
Baglio Occhipinti isn’t just a destination. It’s an experience kissed by nature, filled with flavor, memory, and the quiet luxury of authenticity.

Malta Herritage presents...
CLEAN | CLEAR | CUT – IS THE OFFICIAL TITLE OF THE SECOND EDITION OF THE MALTA BIENNALE, WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE ACROSS VARIOUS HISTORICAL SITES AND LOCATIONS IN MALTA AND GOZO FROM MARCH 11 TILL MAY 29, 2026, WITH ACCLAIMED INTERNATIONAL CURATOR ROSA MARTÍNEZ AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR. >>
...“THE MALTA BIENNALE’S SECOND EDITION TRANSFORMS MALTA AND GOZO INTO A VIBRANT STAGE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, BLENDING HISTORY WITH INNOVATION UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ROSA MARTÍNEZ.”...
Organised by Heritage Malta, the theme and conceptual framework of the Malta Biennale 2026 was announced during a press conference at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, on March 26, 2025, marking the official countdown to next year’s already anticipated international exhibition. During the conference, three open calls were officially launched, inviting local and international artists to submit proposals for projects and exhibitions; for embassies to organise national and/or thematic pavilions; and, lastly, for satellite events – a new component of the Biennale.
The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, said that the Malta Biennale proves that our country can be an international centre of culture, where
contemporary art dialogues with the island’s historical past.
“The success of the Biennale, with recognition from UNESCO, together with strong foreign interest, demonstrates Malta’s potential in the cultural sector. This platform not only gives space and opportunity to artists but also offers a unique experience to Maltese and visitors alike, thanks to all its participants. This is but the beginning of a success story,” concluded Minister Bonnici.
Mario Cutajar, President of the Malta Biennale, expressed how the second edition of this international exhibition of contemporary art will continue to build upon the premise adopted for the inaugural edition in 2024. >>
...“THE MALTA BIENNALE BRIDGES CONTEMPORARY ART AND HERITAGE, SHOWCASING MALTA’S IDENTITY ON A GLOBAL STAGE”...
At its core, the Biennale creates an open dialogue with contemporary art, through which we may glean knowledge of our past and our history, but also of ourselves and our identity. The Malta Biennale is therefore the backbone of the vision which Heritage Malta has been actively developing in order to safeguard the islands’ cultural heritage. Simultaneously, the Biennale creates increased opportunities for Maltese artists, by building upon the successes of the first edition that placed Malta on the international contemporary art map, and by showcasing our cultural heritage and all that makes us Maltese and Mediterranean. Mr Cutajar concluded by saying that the second edition aspires to strengthen this international platform further, by looking optimistically ahead towards future editions.
During her speech, artistic director Rosa Martínez noted how her curatorial experiences in Malta in 2018 and 2022 awoke in her “a permanent interest in the cultural development
of the island [...] Now I feel a strong desire to offer again my professional experience and my updated visions to the young Biennale.”
Rosa Martínez brings her extensive expertise in international bienniales and thematic exhibitions to the Malta Biennale. Supported by a curatorial team composed of Antoine Borg Micallef and Alexia Medici, she expounds on the thematic and conceptual framework selected for the second edition of the Biennale, and how the title of the 2026 edition was carefully construed:
CLEAN: Stop environmental, ethical and aesthetic pollution. Purge, digest, expel.
CLEAR: Discern, decipher, elucidate, understand. CUT: Break away, radically shift direction, open new paths.
“The Biennale will question how contemporary art can enhance critical awareness of our past and present, while fostering the experience
and enjoyment of beauty. It will also address some of the most pressing needs of our time by promoting dialogues between the rich cultural heritage of the Maltese archipelago, contemporary thought and innovative artistic practices,” said Rosa Martínez.
The open call for artists will run from March 26 to June 30, 2025; the call for National Pavilions will run from March 26 to August 29, 2025; and the call for Satellite Events will run from March 26 to July 25, 2025. All the calls can be viewed and accessed via: www.maltabiennale.art

Edwards Lowell is celebrating 100 years of timeless luxury across three generations, marking the vision and dedication of the family business in the realm of quality watches and jewellery.
From its beginnings in other ventures in Valletta to representing iconic international watch brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe, the company is looking back at its journey of growth in the luxury goods business and ahead to an equally bright future as the third generation steps in.
Over the past century, Edwards Lowell Co. Ltd has built a fine reputation, based on the values of “quality, style and attention to detail”.
Speaking about the significance of the milestone anniversary, Malcolm Lowell Snr, who was instrumental in introducing luxury watches in the 1970s, said “100 years is a long time for any company, especially a small business in a small and very competitive market”.
He expressed his satisfaction at having gone “from strength to strength, while at the same time achieving and retaining full family ownership.
As regards the highlights and key turning points throughout the last century, Lowell Snr credited his wife Isabelle for her “great help” in managing to completely turn around the activities of the business from wholesale foodstuffs and clothing – “beset with enormous
problems of government-imposed import substitution and import license restrictions” –towards quality watches and jewellery, which “we have always loved”.
The emphasis has always been on full control of retail boutiques in the most prominent positions, Lowell Snr continued about the winning strategy.
“After all those years, it was with great pride for both Isabelle and myself to see our children Annabelle and Malcolm take a very strong interest in our business.
“They have now taken over the general day-today running with great success, providing the key to the future, while allowing us to relax and take a back seat in full confidence.”
As to how the scenario has developed over the years, Edwards Lowell managing director Malcolm R Lowell said the luxury goods business has changed dramatically since the dawn of social media, turning the top brands into megabrands and relatively niche brands into highly coveted and well-known icons. The auctions business also had an impact on this, and there is no indication of things slowing down in the coming years, he continued.
“We were in the fortunate position to be able to invest and build on our past. At the right moment, the family did exactly that. It was not apparent at the time, but in hindsight, it was very much about taking advantage of the opportunities at the apt time,” Lowell said.
The company will now be honouring this achievement – 100 years of “quality, detail, luxury, experience, heritage, style, dedication, family and hard work” – with special celebrations throughout the year and surprises in store.
The main event is a gala dinner in June that Edwards Lowell intends to “make memorable”, for an intimate group of patrons and business partners. >>
...“100 YEARS IS A LONG TIME FOR ANY COMPANY, ESPECIALLY A SMALL BUSINESS IN A SMALL AND VERY COMPETITIVE MARKET”...
— Malcolm Lowell Snr
“We will have a curated exhibition of our main brands along with some novelties and memorabilia,” Lowell revealed.
Telling the timeline
Edwards Lowell was established in 1925 by Charles E Lowell, who started his journey in the textiles and food products business, moving into luxury watches when he was appointed the official distributor for Rolex in Malta in the 1940s.
This was the catalyst for his son Malcolm Lowell Snr, who, driven by his love for fine Swiss watches, gradually turned the business around in the 1960s and 1970s to concentrate exclusively on the finest quality timepieces and, later, expand its portfolio to include the best jewellery brands on the international market.
Together with his wife Isabelle and children, Annabelle Bonello Lowell and Malcolm R. Lowell, and in keeping with their commitment to give their valued clientele a dedicated service and that personalised touch, the company is today a leader in this sector in Malta.
Now run by the third-generation, together with the rest of the Lowell family, it remains the exclusive Maltese distributor for all the brands it represents.
Edwards Lowell expanded to represent the prestigious Patek Philippe brand in 1980. The landmark watch shop in Zachary Street, Valletta, opened in 1980, followed by the launch of
The Music Shop opposite in 1984, which later transitioned into a bookshop. Next came the unique Chopard agency in1995 and Breitling in 1998.
The Spinola Bay boutique opened in 2007, and Edwards Lowell went on to represent more highend brands, including Hublot, Pomellato and Girard Perreagaux that same year.
The family business was restructured in 2013, with the third-generation son appointed managing director and daughter director, paving the way for significant expansion.
The Rolex Boutique opened in Republic Street, Valletta, in 2018, and a year later in 2019, the Portomaso Concept Store in St Julian’s was also launched, while 2020 marked the opening
of the Cartier and Patek Philippe boutique in Valletta’s Republic Street.
Edwards Lowell Books, representing big brands such as Taschen and Assouline, also came to life in Zachary Street in 2023, while last year 2024, saw the inauguration of two more boutiques, Breitling and Tudor, in Mercury Towers, St Julian’s, taking the number of brands to 16 in seven shops.
The Swiss connection
Other key moments in the company’s timeline include it’s appointment as general sales agents for Swissair in 1961 and that of Malcolm Lowell Snr as Honorary Consul of Switzerland in1972, aged only 24 where he took over from his father Charles who was Honorary Consul since 1937. The role of consul of Switzerland has been handed down along the generations, and when he stepped down in 2015, after 42 years of service, the baton was passed on to Annabelle, who is continuing the family’s legacy of Honorary Consul General for Switzerland in Malta. ...the story of the protected islet steeped in history
Just five kilometers off Malta’s southern coast lies Filfla, a small, rugged islet rising starkly from the Mediterranean. Though uninhabited and just 60,000 square meters in size, Filfla has long captured Maltese imagination—with a history shaped by faith, war, and a fight for preservation.
In 1343, Maltese fishermen built a chapel dedicated to Our Lady on the island, a spiritual refuge for those at sea. This chapel stood for centuries until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856, which also caused parts of the island to collapse into the sea.
Filfla’s troubles didn’t end there. In the 20th century, under British rule, the island was used for military target practice. From the 1940s until the 1970s, the British Navy and Air Force
regularly bombed the islet, leaving it scarred and strewn with unexploded ordnance.
Maltese environmentalists and civil society struggled for years to end the bombardment, clashing with a British general who refused to stop the exercises, citing military necessity. The general reportedly resisted local appeals and scientific concerns, even as awareness of Filfla’s ecological value grew. It wasn’t until sustained public pressure and changing environmental attitudes that bombing finally ceased in 1971.
Today, Filfla is a strict nature reserve, home to unique species like the Filfla wall lizard and large colonies of seabirds. While inaccessible to the public, it stands as a symbol of both natural resilience and the Maltese people’s
determination to protect their heritage—against the odds.
Filfla, though small and barren at first glance, is a haven for unique flora and fauna. The island is home to several endemic species, including the Filfla wall lizard (Podarcis filfolensis filfolensis), which exists nowhere else in the world. Its remote cliffs provide crucial breeding grounds for seabirds such as the Cory’s shearwater, European storm petrel, and yellow-legged gull. The surrounding waters, now part of a Marine Protected Area, support rich marine biodiversity, including fish, crustaceans, and seagrass meadows. On land, sparse but resilient vegetation like samphire and sea-lavender thrive in the harsh, salty conditions, contributing to the island’s delicate but vital ecosystem. ø
