Dear Salem State students, The beginning of a new school year is full of promise – the friends you will meet, the faculty from whom you will gain knowledge, the experiences you will have. With every new semester, we are offered new possibilities and new challenges to overcome.

I look forward to seeing you around campus.

I invite you to stop me if you see me walking around, sit down and share a meal if you spot me at the dining hall, or come to my open office hours hosted throughout the school year and share your stories with me. My favorite – and the most important – part of my job is interacting and learning from students.

Our community benefits from each and every one of you, your voices, and the impact you make. I ask all of you to get engaged in any way that you can. Get engaged in your curriculum, major, career exploration, field work, or internships. Get engaged with new ideas, people, and cultures and step out of your comfort zone. Get engaged in our student leadership, recreational, athletic, civic engagement, or student employment opportunities and enhance your skills in working with others. Contribute to the greater North Shore community and engage with those on and off campus.

Engagement is especially important for the newest members of our community as our incoming freshmen and transfer students have yet to discover all that Salem State has to offer. I want to extend a special welcome to the over 1,500 of you who will soon make your mark on our campus. I hope many of you take advantage of the first year activities afforded you, including the First Year Day of Service and the First Year Reading Experience (FYRE).

I am currently reading this year’s FYRE book selection, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and I look forward to engaging in discussions about it with our campus community.

2. Complete your health and immunization requirements Health and Immunization forms can be submitted to counseling and health services, if you haven’t submitted them yet. Forms are due two weeks prior to moving into the residential halls or two weeks prior to the start of classes for those not living on campus.

Mandatory First-Year Events Tuesday, September 4 Opening Day: Convocation and First Year Reading Experience 10:30 am-3 pm This is the official start to a first-year student’s college experience and includes a number of formal and informal events like the President’s welcome, a picnic lunch, and discussion groups with faculty, and an ice cream social. All first-year students are expected to attend each event.

Monday, September 17 Meet Your Major 11 am-1 pm Students will meet with their academic departments to find out/meet their faculty advisor, discuss their academic major requirements, learn about internships, academic student groups, and more!

This formal meeting is the first opportunity students will have to speak directly with their chosen academic department.

(Undeclared students have a separate session to discuss choosing a major). All first-year students are expected to attend this event.

Friday, September 21 Mapworks Opens Students will log into their Mapworks account (through Navigator) and complete a survey which provides information regarding their interests and experiences. The results are then used to connect them to resources, organizations, and opportunities at the institution. In addition, students are able to provide feedback on their experience thus far at the university. The survey is REQUIRED in most first year seminar courses and ends on Tuesday, October 9.

Wednesday, October 10 Majors/Minors Fair 3-5 pm Students will be able to formally and informally talk with various academic departments on-campus regarding majors and minors as well as fill out paperwork to start the process of changing/declaring a major/minor.

First year experience will be giving guided tours and minipresentations to help students better understand the possibilities and options.

First-Year, First-Steps: Career Prep Workshop How will you get the career and the job you want? It begins with a plan and knowing what steps to take beginning freshman year.

Students will be asked via email to choose ONE workshop to attend - registration occurs on a first-come, first-serve basis starting October 1 until each session is filled.

New Students Salem State requires every incoming student to complete three brief prevention programs within the ‘e-Checkup To Go’ program – one for alcohol, one for marijuana, and one regarding sexual violence prevention. All three include an interactive web survey that allows students to enter information confidentially and receive Salem State University specific feedback. Check your SSU email for instructions. *If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the ‘eCheckup To Go’ programs, please email prevention@salemstate.edu.

Berry Library and Learning Commons The Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons is a modern facility that offers a welcoming and comfortable learning environment. It houses various student services, as well as computer workstations, books, journals, media, and librarians and staff ready to help with your study and research needs. Here are some of the top things to know about the library:

Library Hours

Study areas in Berry Library and the Library Help Desk are open nearly 100 hours a week during the semester.

The library is open most nights until 12 midnight, and once exams begin, the building is open 24 hours a day on weekdays. For the schedule of hours and the most up-to-date information, go to salemstate.edu/library/hours or call the recorded hours line at 978.542.6808.

Reserve a Group Study Room Online

The library has 11 group study rooms that you can reserve online at salemstate.edu/library. Reservations can be made up to one week in advance and rooms may be reserved for up to two hours at a time (four half-hour time slots). Each room has a powered conference table with six-eight seats, whiteboard walls with markers, and a flatscreen display with Apple TV and HMDI connections. Make your reservation online and then come to the Library Help Desk on the first floor to check out the key at the time you have reserved.

Lockers

Berry Library has 42 lockers located on the ground floor that are available to all Salem State students on a first-come basis. You can request a locker assignment at the Library Help Desk on the first floor. Assignments are valid for the current semester and may be renewed unless there is a waiting list. Each locker has a shelf, coat hooks, and a power outlet to charge your devices.

Phone and Device Charging Stations

The library has two cell phone charging stations. Each station has multiple types of connectors for standard devices, such as iPhones and androids. Both stations are on the first floor, near the comfortable seating by the new books and periodicals. Stop by, read a magazine, check out the new books, and charge your phone all at the same time.

Streaming Video Services: Documentaries, Feature Films, and More

The library subscribes to many electronic resources, and one of the most popular is a Netflix-type service called Kanopy.

Go to salemstate.kanopystreaming.com. With your valid SSU network ID and password, you have full access. Kanopy has thousands of classic and timely documentaries like I am not your Negro (2016) and PBS Frontline›s Trump’s Road to the White House (2017). It also has early feature films like Metropolis and City Lights and classic foreign cinema like Breathless (1960) and Rashomon (1950), and some surprises too - like George Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985).

Museum Passes

Did you know that Salem State students, faculty, and staff get free admission to the Peabody Essex Museum when they show their ClipperCard? And did you know that if you want to bring friends or family who do not have a ClipperCard, you can borrow a pass at the library that will get you free admission for up to two people? The library has four reusable passes; each pass admits two people and is due back to the library in 48 hours. To check out a pass, go to the Library Help Desk on the first floor. Salem State students, faculty, and staff also qualify for library privileges at Salem Public Library, which offers passes to several more museums and attractions, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Center for Civic Engagement

Prevention can be almost as important as treatment in maintaining one’s health and well-being. As students join or return to the campus where they will be closely interacting with many others it is important to take proper precautions to be healthy. Simple acts such as covering your mouth when you cough, washing hands thoroughly and regularly help limit the spread of illnesses in a close-knit community.

The Center for Civic Engagement sponsors programming designed to promote advocacy, activism, community involvement, social justice, and civic participation. Civic Engagement is embedded in the fabric of what it means to be a Salem State Viking and is an important part of the student experience.

However, the risk of other diseases may require preventative measures and consultation with your health care provider. For example, Quadrivalent Meningoccal Vaccine and Meningococcal Group B Vaccine (MenB) Meningococcal disease is a severe, potentially life threatening illness. Several studies have shown that residential college students are at increased risk of being infected by the meningitis bacteria, especially in their first year at school.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recommendations regarding the use of a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine for college students. It is highly recommended that all newly entering residential students at Salem State University be appropriately vaccinated with Meningitis vaccine.

Outbreaks of serogroup B meningococcal disease (Men B) have been reported on U.S. college campuses during the last several years, often with tragic consequences.

Unfortunately, the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine does not provide protection against Men B disease.

CDC recommends the additional use of Men B vaccines for people identified to be at increased risk. Salem State Health Services recommends speaking with your health care provider about the Men B vaccine and discuss whether this additional vaccine is appropriate for you.

This fall the campus will be abuzz with Election 2018 programming. Students will have the opportunity to register to vote and engage in social activities such as debate watch parties, as well as films and forums to learn about contemporary political issues and get excited to vote on Tuesday, November 6.

IMPORTANT DEADLINE The last day to register to vote in the November Election is Wednesday, October 17. There will be many opportunities to register to vote on campus including a voter registration table on opening day at the ice cream social.

Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center The Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center, which opened in November 2013, is a fully-equipped fitness center providing top-tier cardio, strength and functional training equipment, locker rooms, recreational courts and a studio for group exercise classes and other activities. Intramural and Club Sports

The Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center offers intramural and club sport opportunities for interested students. The intramural program provides individual and team activities as well as tournaments and special events. Current recognized Club Sports include Cheerleading, Rugby, Spirit Dance Team, and Ultimate Frisbee. If students are interested in participating in a club sport, they should contact the Gassett Fitness Center.

Membership is covered by student fees. Admittance is granted upon successful completion of the registration form at your first visit and presentation of a valid ClipperCard.

Gassett After Dark

The Gassett Fitness Center offers alternative programming options throughout the fall and spring semesters with extended hours. Past programs have included blacklight dodgeball and volleyball, cardboard canoe races, life-sized games, a casino night and more! Join us this year on September 28, October 19, March 21 and April 26 for all of the fun and excitement! All events are FREE and current Salem State students can bring guests for FREE as long as their guests are at least 18 years of age with a government issued photo ID. • MBTA Buses #455 and #459 go down Loring Avenue to and from the train depot and the Wonderland T Stop and South Station, respectively.

• Salem Train Depot connects you to Boston’s North Station, the Newburyport/Rockport rail line and the entire T system.

• SSU Shuttles run via Cavalier Coach between campuses during the day. The student-run shuttle hits the malls and Market Basket in the evenings and on weekends.

• Zipcars on Central Campus: Students 18 and over can join Zipcar for $15 per year and use cars by the hour or by the day. Gas, insurance and roadside assistance are included.

• Zagster bike share. Students receive free membership and the first two hours of every ride are free. The bike path through the marsh behind Atlantic provides a beautiful route between South and Central Campuses. Please use a helmet!

• Share a Ride through the North Shore TMA’s ride-matching service.

DISABILITY SERVICES Disability Services promotes an accessible educational and campus-wide experience by coordinating services and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Meal plans will be loaded to your ClipperCards on Thursday, August 30, for use starting the following day. Marsh Hall will be open Friday, August 31 at breakfast and will remain open for normal meal hours all weekend. You are now able to request an upgrade to your meal plan through your Navigator! Log in today to see the new “Upgrade Meal Plan” link on the “Full Menu” sidebar and explore your options. Once your plan has been upgraded, you will see an immediate adjustment to your bill. Your ClipperCard account will be adjusted within two business days.

The deadlines to upgrade your plan are: September 28, 2018 at 3 pm for the fall semester, and February 22, 2019 at 3 pm for spring. Please remember to adjust your meal plan each semester.

Chartwells offers abundant residential, commuter, and retail dining options on campus. Enjoy a variety of delicious and nutritious menu items served at some of the busiest social hubs on campus.

All our board operations are open to the public so you don’t have to be on a meal plan to dine at these locations. Nonmeal plan customers may pay a fixed price for breakfast, lunch or dinner and enjoy the special event dining during various times throughout the semester. We like to think you can have fun with food so students can look forward to casual events such as building their own caramel apples and PB&J day to dining like celebrities at our annual Night at the Oscars dinner!

Upper Campus offers a wide-variety of dining options including Burger King, Giffords Famous Ice Cream, Mondos, Chopped!, plus Dunkin’ Donuts in Meier Hall. Central Campus houses many attractions such as The Salem Diner, Starbucks, and The Bertolon Food Court. Outtakes is located at two locations and provides guests with pre-made salads and sandwiches, ice cream, sushi, and freshly made cookies. Add/Drop Registration The day school add/drop period runs from Wednesday September 5 through Tuesday September 11. You may rearrange your schedule by adding or dropping courses via Navigator. Dropping an undergraduate day class after September 11 will result in a class withdrawal grade of W. For evening courses through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the deadline to drop is two days after the class start date. If you need assistance adjusting your schedule, academic advisors will be available for consultation on a walk-in basis in the Center for Academic Excellence on the first floor of the Library during the first week of the semester.

Applications for graduation are now open for fall 2018 in Navigator and will be open for spring and summer 2019 on September 1, 2018. Applications for students completing this fall are due on October 15, and we also strongly encourage all students planning on graduating in May or August 2019 to submit applications as soon as possible in the fall semester. If you apply in September or October for May or August, you will receive a review of your remaining requirements so you can stay on track for the spring semester. Log into your Navigator account and click on “Apply for Graduation” under My Academics to complete your application. Be sure to review your degree tracker report and visit the advising office in the Berry Library and Learning Commons with any questions you may have. Updated bimonthly e-bills are generated online, usually during the first and third week of the month, and you will receive a notification via your Salem State email so please check your Salem State email regularly. The university offers a monthly payment plan through Tuition Management Systems (TMS).

Health Insurance

Health insurance coverage is mandatory for undergraduate students registered for nine or more credits and graduate students registered for 4.5 or more credits. The university offers a health insurance plan. You must either enroll in this plan or waive out of it by showing proof of your own comparable insurance. For more information on the health insurance plan, please visit Navigator; choose full menu, campus finance and then student health insurance to enroll in or waive out of the insurance plan.

Educational Records and Your Privacy

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) ensures the confidentiality of your education record and restricts the disclosure of your information to third parties, including your parents or other family members. If you want us to share any information about your educational record with your parents, you will need to complete a FERPA release via Navigator by clicking on Full Menu>Personal Profile>FERPA Waiver and bring it into the student navigation center with a photo ID. To find out more about your rights under FERPA, please visit salemstate.edu/ferpa to read the full FERPA policy.

CAE, the Center for Academic Excellence helps students achieve academic success by providing a variety of academic services. These academic services include advising, tutoring, mentoring, supplemental instruction, and collaborating with other departments to ensure that students have the appropriate academic supports to be successful at Salem State. PEER TUTORS

How to request a FREE Peer Tutor Peer Tutoring helps you become a more independent, self-confident, and efficient learner so that you are better prepared to meet the academic rigors of college. Peer Tutoring is a free service provided to all Salem State University undergraduate students. You must sign up in advance for one-hour appointments in most courses using TutorTrac. See the “Request a peer tutor” link on your Navigator account. ACADEMIC ADVISORS

We would like to remind students that Academic Advising is located within the Center for Academic Excellence on the first floor of the Berry Library and Learning Commons.

In an effort to best serve our students and establish advising relationships, in addition to your faculty advisor from your major discipline, you have an academic advisor in the Center for Academic Excellence, according to the last name and specialty listed on our website: salemstate. edu/advising. Additionally, Advising Peer Mentors, students who are trained and supervised to assist undergraduate students navigate the university landscape; are available to meet with students in the Center for Academic Excellence. Through shared experiences, peer mentors are in a great position to provide support both academically and socially. Peer advisors assist in familiarizing students with the university’s core curriculum, majors and minors, as well as course selection/registration process.

Parents and Family Council Join the Parents and Family Council! This group serves as a fun forum for parents to communicate ideas, questions and concerns to the university. The council is a sounding board for the divisions of enrollment management, student life and institutional advancement when planning family activities and programs. Our informal group meets monthly on campus over dinner on Thursday evenings. The Parents Council also promotes several events throughout the year, where parents are invited to campus to attend free events with their students and/or to network with other parents.

We invite parents to join this group and/or participate in our parent activities throughout the year. Laptop Support salemstate.edu/sits 978.542.7110 All incoming students are required to have a laptop computer. In conjunction with Salem State’s wireless network, a laptop computer allows students access to the university’s online services anywhere on campus.

Information technology services (ITS) offers free walk-in laptop support for all current students in room 159 in the Classroom Building on Central Campus. Walk-in hours for laptop support are 9 am–10 pm, Monday through Thursday, and Friday 9 am–4 pm.
