MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES Founded in 1996, SALDEF is a national Sikh American media, policy, and education organization. Our mission is to empower Sikh Americans by building dialogue, deepening understanding, promoting civic and political participation, and upholding social justice and religious freedom for all Americans. We are grounded in our values of chardi kala (eternal optimism), nimrata (humility) and seva (service), inspired by our sangat (community) for sarbat da bhalla (benefit of all). We envision a United States where Sikh Americans are respected and recognized as a vibrant and integral part of the fabric of this nation and are appreciated for our shared values of service, social justice, and an unshakeable belief in freedom and equality for all.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! As we enter our twentieth year we have been asking: What does it mean to lead? What defines leadership? For SALDEF, leadership is when we see our Sikh values in action, and when the practice of our values leads to sustainable, positive change.
Most powerfully, our SikhLEAD participants defined leadership for a new generation. They shared their vision for our collective future. They aim to live our values and empower communities. They learned how to create a community of changemakers.
This year we shared the Sikh American story of courage, hard work, and service with millions at the Rose Parade, hundreds of staff and Members of Congress at Langar on the Hill, and one-on-one in our neighbor’s homes with the first-ever Sikh American television commercial.
As we look ahead to the next twenty years, we will have to continue to innovate and challenge our next generation of leaders to develop the skills to share our values in a digital world defined by social storytelling. That is why we are developing a new platform to share the stories of our community, SikhAmericans.org.
Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal exemplifies what it means to lead. He became the first Sikh American deputy sheriff in Texas to serve with his articles of faith intact. He was driven to join the Harris County Sheriff’s Office when he heard Sheriff Adrian Garcia at his local gurdwara, driven to follow our value of service. He is a powerful example of a Sikh who serves, and he has created new pathways for Sikh Americans.

On New Year’s Day, a group of dedicated Sikh Americans made history. Fifty million Americans turned on their TVs to watch Sikhs who have committed their lives to service in the first-ever Sikh float at the Rose Parade. We are deeply grateful to our partners the United Sikh Mission, Khalsa Care Foundation, SikhLens, and Minu Kaur Singh, the float’s creative director, for turning an ambitious vision into a reality. SALDEF’s media team led public relations for this historic event. THE FLOAT, WITH 17,000 MULTICOLORED ROSES AND 2,500 GERBERA DAISIES, TELLS THE STORY OF THE SIKHS' 125 YEARS IN THIS COUNTRY. AT THE TOP IS A REPLICA OF THE FIRST GURDWARA, CONSTRUCTED IN THE U.S. IN STOCKTON IN 1912… SALDEF not only conducted outreach to broadcasters at the event, which included national outlets ABC, NBC, the Hallmark Channel, NPR and The Los Angeles Times, we also managed media outreach before, during, and after the event. We secured opportunities to share our heritage and Sikh values, like seva and chardi kala. More than 30 separate media placements were secured. The Rose Parade effort speaks to the power of SALDEF’s Media Initiative: It provides Sikh Americans the opportunity to tell our stories and generate major Sikh American awareness, while empowering community leaders to build their voices and important relationships with media. FIRST-EVER SIKH AMERICAN COMMERCIAL The first-ever Sikh American commercial re-aired around the country thanks to an additional investment by Comcast Corporation valued at $1 million in air time. This represents a total investment of $3.5 million in the Sikh American community. The commercial, also known as a public service announcement (PSA) introduces the audience to Sikh Americans and the community’s identity, values, and 125-year history in the United States. The PSA is narrated by Waris Singh Ahluwalia, a Sikh American actor and designer. “At Comcast, we know that timely, relevant information can inspire people and energize organizations to work toward change,” said Johnnie Giles, Executive Director of External Affairs at Comcast. “We are pleased that SALDEF’s PSA was highly effective last year, and we are happy to re-air the PSA in an effort to continue this important momentum.” The PSA was developed under the direction of SALDEF with the support of the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM).
MEDIA TRAININGS SALDEF media trainings expanded across the nation teaching Sikh Americans how to gain access and share their narrative with the media. Community-based trainings were held with dozens of Sikh Americans in Chicago and Detroit. Specialized trainings were held for all graduates of the SikhLEAD program, participants in the first Rose Parade float, and attendees at the National South Asian Summit. Trainees received extensive training from media veterans, including one-on-one interview training, a guide to sharing Sikh values in the media, and lessons how to effectively pitch stories. All members of the national Sikh Speakers Bureau continue to receive year-round support from SALDEF in sharing the Sikh voice on policy and values. THE FIRST TURBANED SIKH DEPUTY Marking a Sikh American milestone, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) in Texas welcomed Sikh officers with their articles of faith intact for the first time. The HCSO is the largest Sheriff’s Office in the nation to have a full-time Sikh American officer with his articles of faith intact due to a religious accommodation exception to their dress code policy. To mark this landmark occasion, SALDEF, alongside Sheriff Adrian Garcia of the HCSO, and Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal spoke at a press conference announcing the change. National, state, and community outlets covered this historic announcement, featuring the story of Deputy Dhaliwal. SALDEF has been working with the HCSO since 2008 to facilitate a relationship with the Houston-area Sikh community and helped develop a policy on religious accommodation. SALDEF continues to conduct trainings on cultural sensitivity and training with the HCSO.

LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM SALDEF certified 15 new Law Enforcement trainers, increasing the organization’s ability to provide Sikh Awareness trainings to law enforcement around the country. The graduates from around the country are part of the Law Enforcement Partnership Program (LEPP), established in 1999 as the first formalized cultural awareness training program for law enforcement about Sikh Americans. The trainers are already teaching law enforcement and developing relationships in their communities. The new LEPP class has the ability to cultivate cultural competency and introduce officers to the Sikh articles of faith and the Sikh way of life, using SALDEF created-curriculum, such as On Common Ground, which was used to train more than 40,000 employees at the TSA in one year. These trainers also learned how to employ the new anti-Sikh hate crimes tracking form, which the FBI and police around the country use. FBI BEGINS TRACKING ANTI-SIKH HATE CRIMES The federal government began tracking hate crimes against Sikhs and other communities. Following a five year effort, which began in 2010 by SALDEF, the FBI released new law enforcement reporting forms which will count hate crimes committed directed at Sikhs, Arabs, Hindus, Mormons, Orthodox Christians, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. The FBI released the updated FBI Hate Crime Data Collection Guidelines and Training Manual, considered the single most important and inclusive hate crime training resource available for law enforcement. The new manual includes special training and scenarios to identify crimes directed against Sikhs and their articles of faith, developed with the help of SALDEF and using Turban Myths, the SALDEF / Stanford University report.
PROTECTING THE SIKH ID IN ILLINOIS After more than a year of work on the issue, Illinois has confirmed that Sikhs can wear their turbans in their driver’s licenses. SALDEF received reports that Sikh Americans and members of other communities, like the Muslim community, in Illinois were being asked to remove dastaars and/or modify their articles of faith in order to get their driver’s licenses. SALDEF worked with the Secretary of State’s office to publish a poster and handout on religious accommodation of Sikh Americans, which is being shared with every office in the State as well as the public.
LEADERSHIP IN WASHINGTON SALDEF serves as a voice for Sikh Americans on issues that affect the lives of all Americans. SALDEF’s policy work includes representing our community on Capitol Hill, working with federal agencies, and building relationships with coalition partners. SALDEF represents Sikh Americans on issues like voting rights, women’s rights, religious freedom, bullying, and civil rights. Policies we support include the End Racial Profiling Act, the Safe Schools Improvement Act, and speaking out against the suspect surveillance of minority communities.
RECOGNIZED LEADERSHIP In September of this year, Executive Director Jasjit Singh was selected by President Obama to be the first Sikh to serve the President's faith-based and neighborhood partnerships advisory council. Additonally, SALDEF and Executive Director Jasjit Singh were honored by the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) with their Community Achievement Award, in recognition of our leadership in civil rights for all Americans. SALDEF is in the leadership of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), a member of the national Asian Pacific American Media Coalition, and serves on the Department of Homeland Security's Faith Based Initiative.

SIKHLEAD CLASS OF 2015: INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The SikhLEAD Internship Program partners with congressional offices, federal agencies, and Washington based organizations to provide college, graduate, and law students with enriching internship experiences. Interns are given first-hand perspective into the functions of government and the opportunity to build a meaningful career network. SIKHLEAD CLASS OF 2015: LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM This year SALDEF successfully graduated its fourth Leadership Development Program (LDP) class. The program selects eighteen talented and promising young Sikh Americans from around the country for six days of training. THE LDP PROGRAM SELECTS 18 TALENTED AND PROMISING YOUNG SIKH AMERICANS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY FOR 6 DAYS OF TRAINING. Participants create a personal mission statement, develop new skills in public speaking, increase awareness of personal culture and identity, develop a clear understanding of their unique leadership profile and build skills to increase community empowerment. LDP inspires and trains Sikh American youth to become effective agents of change committed to exploring and realizing both their personal potential and that of the Sikh American community.

LANGAR ON CAPITOL HILL The largest Congressional and community gathering in Sikh American history was held at the second annual Langar on Capitol Hill. Co-hosted by SALDEF’s SikhLEAD 2015 class and Congressman Mike Honda’s (D-CA 17) office, a record 17 Members of Congress and over 350 congressional staff members, Sikh community members, and non-Sikhs from a variety of professional paths shared Langar, became connected to Sikh values and the Sikh community, and heard why Congressional Leaders are dedicated to creating a more fostering environment for Sikh Americans. Langar on the Hill was on the cover of Roll Call, a newspaper received by every Member of Congress and the White House, featuring the Sikh value of service. Over a dozen outlets covered the event and featured remarks of the SikhLEAD interns sharing our faith with their country. 1
